In this paper, we develop a procedure for the detection of the contours of thermal bridges from thermographic images, in order to study the energetic performance of buildings. Two main steps of the above method are: the enhancement of the thermographic images by an optimized version of the mathematical algorithm for digital image processing based on the theory of sampling Kantorovich operators, and the application of a suitable thresholding based on the analysis of the histogram of the enhanced thermographic images. An innovative technique based on beamforming is implemented, at the aim of detecting the distances from the observer and the relative positions among the noise sources themselves in multisource noise scenarios. By means of preliminary activities to assess the optical camera focal length and stereoscopic measurements followed by image processing, the geometric information in the source-microphone direction is retrieved, a parameter generally missed in classic beamforming applications. A corollary of the method consists of the possibility of obtaining also the distance among different noise sources which could be present in a multisource environment. A loss of precision is found when the effect of the high acoustic reflectivity ground interferes with the noise source.

- Abstract
The development of sustainable and renewable energy technologies has received significant attention to realize Net-Zero CO2 equivalent emission goals and meet the growing energy demand. Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier that can facilitate the large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources and assist in the replacement of fossil fuels and to reduce the impact of global warming. The objective of this research is to present an advanced hydrogen-integrated renewable energy system model to meet the energy demand of a distributed community and produce green hydrogen from excess/curtailed renewable energy. The study employs an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEM) for producing hydrogen. An optimization model of the renewable energy system and a mathematical model of the electrolyzer are developed to achieve this objective. The model uses an energy maximisation approach and optimally combines wind system, biogas plant, and solar PV system to meet the residential and commercial load demands. To increase the system stability, the model is interconnected with the local grid station for energy exchange. Moreover, an uncertainty analysis is also performed to analyse the system response under random variation in load demand. The study results show that a significant amount of clean energy (15,025 MWh/year) is produced by the system at the lowest levelized cost of 0.084 €/kWh and a reduction of 6,078 tons of CO2 emission during the first year of operation is obtained. The electrolyzer produces 63 kg/hr of hydrogen, while the cell performance remains stable at 60 °C and the cell voltage reaches 2.019 V at 2.415 A/cm2 current density.

- Abstract
Clean energy technologies are playing a vital role in energy transition, realization of Net-Zero emission goals, and satisfying increasing energy demands. The objective of this work is to investigate the potentials of renewable energy sources and propose a state-of-the-art new grid connected energy system model, which increases the penetration of renewable energies in the medium-size Municipality of Perugia, Central Italy. The presented energy system model integrates and optimises renewable energy sources mainly consisting of hydro, solar, and biomass, by implementing new dispatch strategies and advanced mathematical model. The developed model maximises the power generation of each source based on the least Net Present Cost and the lowest Levelized Cost of Energy and balances the fluctuating load demand by using combined dispatch strategies. Furthermore, demand-side load management strategies are implemented for efficient energy management. An economic and environmental analysis has been performed to evaluate the impact of the proposed system. The results show that a significant amount of clean energy (33.2 GWh/year) is produced at the lowest Levelized Cost of Energy of 0.067 €/kWh. Moreover, up to 78% of the energy demand of the selected community is covered by renewable energies, which evades 13,452 tons of CO2 emission yearly.

- Abstract
New energy technologies are gaining rising importance because of climate change and increasing energy demand, and they show an enormous potential to mitigate environmental issues. With the purpose of maximizing the renewable energy utilization, combined heat and power systems are considered more effective, economical, and ecological. However, renewable energy-based combined heat and power systems are still in the development phase. Hence, this study presents a new methodology to produce combined electricity and heat from wind and solar PV systems to meet the energy demand of small, distributed communities. For this scope, an optimization model is developed to exploit rationally the power generation from renewables and meet the electricity and heating demand of two selected communities. The curtailed energy of solar and wind systems is used to produce heat by a thermal load controller combined with a natural gas boiler. The developed model is also integrated with the grid station for energy exchange. This study contributes also to evaluate the economic and environmental feasibility of combined heat and power systems, and determine the best optimal operational strategies to extend the renewable energy utilization and minimize energy costs. The obtained results show that a significant amount of clean energy can be produced, covering the 79% of the energy demand of the selected communities, at the lowest levelized cost of energy of 0.013 €/kWh; meanwhile, the proposed system reduces 4129 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

- Abstract
Energy harvesting from renewable sources can play a vital role to decarbonize the environment, limit global warming and mitigate the growing energy demand. The objective of this work consists of decarbonizing a University Campus and neighboring communities by producing electricity from solar photovoltaic systems integrated with an energy storage system and local grid station. A new mathematical model is developed to maximize the system power generation and balance the load demand. The simulation and optimization software System Advisor Model (SAM) is used to develop and test model results. The software is used to analyze and optimize the solar energy generation, the energy demand, and the economic performance: capital cost, overall investment, net present value, and the Levelized Cost of Energy of the project. A novel approach decentralized load centers is adopted to share power with adjacent communities. At the aim of improving the system flexibility, reliability, and climate resilience, the established model is grid-connected. The CO2 emissions reduction is also determined to evaluate the environmental impact of the interventions.

The strategies for and the performance of the CMS silicon tracking system alignment during the 2015-2018 data-taking period of the LHC are described. The alignment procedures during and after data taking are explained. Alignment scenarios are also derived for use in the simulation of the detector response. Systematic effects, related to intrinsic symmetries of the alignment task or to external constraints, are discussed and illustrated for different scenarios.

- Abstract
The characterization of thermal insulation properties of construction materials represents a fundamental step on the building insulation assessment. In recent years innovative materials have been introduced in the market to fulfill the continuously growing requirements of energy saving and sustainability, and their performance is not so reliable and mature as it happens for traditional insulators. The work presents a Round Robin Test realised among six European laboratories hosting hot plates devices to measure the thermal conductivity of four different materials: aerogel, vacuum insulation panels, polystyrene and birch wood fibre insulation boards. After the definition of the common measurement protocol, the tests campaign was executed and the results were checked with a consistency analysis. Data showed that the hot plate apparatuses result suitable for the measurement of the tested innovative materials, both in terms of absolute values retrieved and repeatability. The reproducibility is satisfactory as well, except for vacuum insulation panels, the most insulating samples, which present values of standard deviations quite high, at least in relative terms, so showing that the thermal properties of high performance materials must be assessed with particular care.
