International audience; The currently available data on military and monumental architecture of the second half of the third millennium BCE in the Trans-Tigridian region and the Zagros Piedmont are extremely limited. For this reason, the levels from the third quarter of the third millennium brought to light during the latest excavation campaigns on the summit of Logardan (Chamchamal area, Sulaymaniyah Governorate) represent significant evidence of the structures used first to defend and then to administrate a “border” region. At present, the vestiges of the stronghold – later converted into a monumental compound – are only partially known. However, stratigraphic and architectural analysis, as well as the distribution of archaeological materials associated with the built spaces allow a first reconstruction of the internal organisation of these two structures. Their design features are the result of local architectural traditions, Mesopotamian influences, and effective adaptive expedients with respect to the topographical characteristics of the site. They compose a built environment with few formal parallels, but with very clear functional qualities. However, the details of the defensive and monumental attributes of this frontier station raise many questions. How should the very notion of “frontier” be interpreted in this particular area, until recently considered as a Mesopotamian irrelevant periphery? And what might have been the political entities that established and administered their mutual boundaries in the Qara Dagh area?

New research in previously unexplored or poorly documented areas of Greater Mesopotamia has made it possible to define better the chronology and distinctive material aspects of the Ubaid cultural phenomenon. In particular, the end of the Middle Chalcolithic period has been investigated in well-stratified contexts comparable with the best-known archaeological record from the Mosul-Tepe Gawra region or the Syrian steppe despite the regionally changing nature of the Ubaid cultural sphere. This article aims to present a very elemental characterisation to make this transition better recognisable during fieldwork activities. From this perspective, my paper discusses some recent ceramic data and radiocarbon dates from northern Mesopotamia (from the sites of Logardan and Boskin, in the Zagros Piedmont) and southern Mesopotamia (from the site of Tell ‘Uwaili). This approach does not intend to underestimate the complexity and diversification of economic, social, and cultural dynamics developed in different remote areas within the Ubaid sphere. On the contrary, the analysis of ceramic evolution (not only in its most superficial and visible aspects but also according to technical characteristics) aims to verify whether, towards the end of the Obeid phase, the Mesopotamian cultural world still had its own internal coherence, or whether the post-Obeid transition marked a general cultural fragmentation along divergent lines of development in the different regions. Les recherches récentes menées dans des régions jusqu’alors inexplorées ou insuffisamment documentées de Grande Mésopotamie ont permis de mieux définir, tant sur le plan chronologique que matériel, les aspects distinctifs du phénomène culturel de l’Obeid. En particulier, la fin du Chalcolithique Moyen a été étudiée dans des contextes bien stratifiés qui peuvent être comparés avec des aires mieux connues comme la région de Mossoul-Tepe Gawra et la steppe syrienne, en dépit de la nature multiforme de la sphère culturelle de l’Obeid. Le but de cet article est une caractérisation de base de cette transition, afin de la rendre mieux reconnaissable lors des activités de terrain. Il présente dans ce but des données céramiques récentes et des datations au radiocarbone provenant à la fois de Mésopotamie du Nord (sites de Logardan et Boskin, dans le piémont du Zagros) et de Mésopotamie du Sud (site de Tell ‘Uwaili). Cette approche n’entend pas sous-estimer la complexité et la diversification des dynamiques économiques, sociales et culturelles qui se sont certainement développées de manière différente dans des zones fort éloignées les unes des autres. Au contraire, l’analyse de l’évolution céramique (non seulement par ses aspects les plus superficiels et visibles mais aussi en fonction des caractéristiques techniques), vise à vérifier si, vers la fin de la phase Obeid, le monde culturel mésopotamien avait encore sa propre cohérence interne, ou si la transition post-Obeid a marqué une fragmentation culturelle générale suivant des lignes de développement divergentes dans les différentes régions.

Since 2012, the French archaeological mission in the Governorate of Soulaimaniah has been exploring the Rania and Peshdar plains in order to understand the evolution of settlement patterns in Northern Mesopotamia from the Palaeolithic to the present day. Newly acquired data from surveys combined with excavations at six prehistoric sites provide the first picture of human settlement patterns in this region from the Palaeolithic to the Chalcolithic. The development of these patterns reveals the presence of a local system that was deeply rooted in the wider Mesopotamian context but was also subject to influence from the Iranian plateau. Depuis 2012, la mission archéologique française du Gouvernorat de Soulaimaniah explore les deux plaines de Peshdar et de Rania afin de comprendre l’évolution des systèmes d’habitat en Mésopotamie septentrionale dans la longue durée, du Paléolithique à aujourd’hui. Les données nouvellement acquises lors des prospections, ainsi que les informations issues de sondages effectués sur six sites préhistoriques permettent d’esquisser une première image des modèles d’implantation humaine dans la région, du Paléolithique jusqu’au Chalcolithique. L’évolution des modèles de peuplement montre une dynamique locale ancrée dans le système mésopotamien, mais influencée également par le plateau iranien.

International audience; Recent data from the sites of Girdi Qala and Logardan (Sulaymaniyah Province, Iraqi Kurdistan) are starting to change the picture of Uruk culture expansion. In the central Zagros piedmont, this phenomenon began as early as the south-Mesopotamian Early Uruk (local Late Chalcolithic 2). At Girdi Qala, the Uruk presence is documented by several firing structures which show that Uruk pottery was made on-site by resident craftsmen. At Logardan, different architectural phases of a large monumental complex have been identified on a wide mud-brick terrace in a dominant position, on the edge of the natural hill. Both the craft area and the monumental constructions date back to the beginning of the 4th millennium BCE, as demonstrated by the pottery assemblage, closely similar to the Early Uruk repertoire from Eridu or Susa. Nevertheless, during the first half of the 4th millennium BCE, the area did not yield materials belonging exclusively to south-Mesopotamian Uruk settlers. On the contrary, at Girdi Qala and Logardan, as also in the whole region east of the Tigris River, material culture documents above all a widespread presence of indigenous populations, who had very close relations with Uruk people since the beginning of the 4th millennium. These discoveries lead us to revise traditional conceptions of the Uruk expansion, based on the simplistic dichotomy between local populations and southern settlers. In the same way, several questions raise about nature and reasons of the so-called ‘colonial’ phenomenon, that was rooted in south-Mesopotamian social and economic dynamics.

International audience; D’une part, les fours à céramiques sont des structures architecturales dont on peut étudier les restes archéologiques. D’autre part, ils correspondent à ce qu’en physique l’on définit comme une « machine », à savoir un dispositif effectuant un travail grâce à l’exploitation d’une source d’énergie contenue dans un combustible. De ce point de vue, pendant très longtemps, l’archéologie a interprété la variabilité dimensionnelle, architecturale et, surtout, technique des fours comme une conséquence de contraintes fonctionnelles et environnementales censées déterminer les avantages et les limites intrinsèques au fonctionnement de chaque système de cuisson. Autrement dit, le travail effectué par ces machines étant toujours le même (la cuisson de la poterie), la persistance ou le changement à travers l’espace et le temps d’une certaine technique de cuisson relèverait de facteurs environnementaux (climat, types de combustibles, argiles disponibles, etc.), ou de performance (temps de réchauffement et refroidissement, températures maximales, etc.), dont les variations représenteraient des contraintes insurmontables, auxquelles s’adapter. Cette conviction, très répandue en archéologie, est ici testée par une réévaluation critique des données ethnographiques et, surtout, par une étude expérimentale ayant impliqué des relevés thermométriques lors de plusieurs cuissons effectuées dans des fours et des conditions différentes. La comparaison des résultats permet d’évaluer si la multiplicité des installations documentées par les recherches ethnographiques et archéologiques est fonction de quelques facteurs ayant imposé des évolutions et des adaptations spécifiques, ou si elle doit plutôt être appréhendée en termes culturels.

International audience; The phase and the ceramic materials that, in Southern Mesopotamia, go under the label of “Uruk” (after the toponym of the site in southern Iraq) have traditionally been considered the origin for the development of the potter’s wheel in the Near East, according to a perspective that associated the emergence of the potter’s wheel, the “mass” production of the so-called bevelled-rim bowls and first urbanization. According to recent excavations and ceramic studies it is now clear that this was a narrative based on a priori convictions. However, even if under very different socio-technical conditions, it is true that the potter’s wheel made an early appearance in Southern Mesopotamia within the Uruk cultural sphere, and then developed in a widespread and discontinuous way in the Uruk network. Based on recent ongoing fieldwork data from Syria (Tell Feres) and Iraqi Kurdistan (Logardan and Girdi Qala), ceramic analyses have taken into account new criteria to identify the use of the potter’s wheel. This paper outlines the chronological and socio-technical scenario behind the adoption of the potter’s wheel in the Uruk world, picturing the peculiarities of this cultural environment, as well as the parallels with the emergence conditions of the potter’s wheel in northern Mesopotamia and other areas of the Near East.

International audience; The French-Lebanese Nahr Ibrahim Project was undertaken on the valley of this major river in Mount Lebanon. It aims to characterize the environmental impacts on forests, soils and water resources of landscape terracing (a typical feature of Mount Lebanon), and of settlement patterns in the Holocene. The definition of transitional periods and the timescales of changes are examined through archaeological and historical data, 14C datings, geology and soil science (paleosols), paleobotany (anthracology, carpology, phytholits), anthropology and ancient photographs (due to the Jesuit Fathers in the beginnings of the XX c.). The study of the Nahr Ibrahim watershed is linked to a multiscalar approach of the territory lying between Nahr el-Kelb toward south and Nahr ej-Jaouz toward north in order to map the variations in land-use. The present paper focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the archaeological data base to achieve this mapping. We then expose the main aspects of the study of a four meters polygenetic soil profile in regard to the first records from a recent excavation on the most ancient sedentary settlement known in the mountain. The integrative approach brings into light the environmental answers to the exploitation of natural resources and in return the adaptation of societies to these variations in the second half of the Holocene, from the forest clearing around 6000 BP up to recent landscape and socio-economical changes.; Le projet de recherche franco-libanais "Nahr Ibrahim" initié autour de la vallée éponyme de ce fleuve majeur du Mont‑Liban s’attache à caractériser les impacts sur l'environnement forestier, les sols et les ressources en eau de la construction des paysages en terrasses, et des formes de peuplement à l'Holocène. La définition des transitions et les temporalités des changements sont examinées à partir des données archéologiques et historiques, radiochronologiques (14C), géologiques et pédologiques, paléobotaniques (anthracologie, carpologie, phytolithes), ethnologiques et iconographiques (dont les photographies du début du XXe s. par les Pères Jésuites). L'étude du bassin versant du Nahr Ibrahim est articulée à une approche multiscalaire du territoire entre le Nahr el‑Kelb au sud et le Nahr ej‑Jaouz au nord, pour cartographier les variations de l'occupation du sol. Dans cet article, nous discutons les apports et les limites de la carte archéologique puis nous mettons en perspective l'étude d'un profil de sol polygénique plurimétrique avec les premiers résultats provenant de la fouille de l'habitat sédentaire le plus ancien documenté à ce jour dans la montagne libanaise. L'approche intégrative met en évidence des réponses de l'environnement à l’exploitation des ressources par les sociétés et des adaptations de ces dernières aux changements dans la seconde moitié de l'Holocène, depuis les défrichements vers 6000 BP jusqu'aux mutations paysagères et socio-économiques récentes.
