Abstract Background Endometriosis is a gynecological disease defined by the histological presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Women with endometriosis have an increased risk of different types of malignancies, especially ovarian cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Though there are several theories, researchers remain unsure as to the definitive cause of endometriosis. Our objective was to test the validity of the theory of müllerianosis for endometriosis, that is the misplacing of primitive endometrial tissue along the migratory pathway of foetal organogenesis Methods We have collected at autopsy 36 human female foetuses at different gestational age. We have performed a morphological and immunohistochemical study (expression of oestrogen receptor and CA125) on the pelvic organs of the 36 foetuses included en-block and totally analyzed. Results In 4 out of 36 foetuses we found presence of misplaced endometrium in five different ectopic sites: in the recto-vaginal septum, in the proximity of the Douglas pouch, in the mesenchimal tissue close to the posterior wall of the uterus, in the rectal tube at the level of muscularis propria, and in the wall of the uterus. All these sites are common location of endometriosis in women. Conclusion We propose that a cause of endometriosis is the dislocation of primitive endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity during organogenesis.

Abstract Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a novel anticancer therapy that is currently being evaluated in human and pet cancer patients. ECT associates the administration of an anti-tumor agent to the delivery of trains of appropriate waveforms. The increased uptake of chemotherapy leads to apoptotic death of the neoplasm thus resulting in prolonged local control and extended survival. In this paper we describe the histological features of a broad array of spontaneous tumors of companion animals receiving pulse-mediated chemotherapy. Multivariate statistical analysis of the percentage of necrosis and apoptosis in the tumors before and after ECT treatment, shows that only a high percentage of necrosis and apoptosis after the ECT treatment were significantly correlated with longer survivals of the patients (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.004, respectively). Further studies on this topic are warranted in companion animals with spontaneous tumors to identify new molecular targets for electrochemotherapy and to the develop new therapeutical protocols to be translated to humans.

Alcohol changes the progression of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related chronic liver disease and may affect the outcome of interferon therapy. The ethanol intake of 245 patients with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis C with or without cirrhosis, its interaction with laboratory and histological parameters common to alcohol and HCV-mediated liver damage, and its effects on therapy were evaluated. The results show that 60–70% of subjects regularly consumed alcohol (median intake >40 g/day in about 30%). Less than 50% stopped drinking after being diagnosed as having liver disease. Ethanol intake affected: fibrosis, especially in women, HCV RNA levels, which were significantly lower in abstainers than in drinkers (0.6 ± 0.3 vs 6.9 ± 5.9 Eq/ml x106; P < 0.01), and response to interferon therapy. The number of responders decreased as ethanol intake increased. There were less abstainers than drinkers among non-responders (10.7% vs 63.1% respectively; P < 0.001). Data indicate that alcohol will induce and worsen liver damage and, in subjects with chronic liver disease who continue to drink, adversely affect their response to treatment. Timed pregnant Balb-C mice were treated from day 1 of gestation to 7 days after delivery with the endocrine disruptor bisphenol a (BPA) (100, or 1,000 microg/kg/day). After delivery, pups were hold for three months; then, ovaries were analyzed in their entirety. We found that in the ovaries of BPA-treated animals the number of primordial follicles and of developing follicles was significantly lower than in the untreated animals. Moreover, the number of atretic follicles was significantly higher in the treated animals. Finally, we found that the animals displaying endometriosis-like phenotype had a more severe impairment of the ovaries in term of number of primordial and developing follicles in comparison with the other mice exposed to BPA. In conclusion, we describe for the first time a complex phenotype in mice, elicited by pre-natal exposition to BPA, that includes ovarian lesions and endometriosis. Considering the high incidence of endometriosis and of the premature ovarian failure associated to infertility in these patients, the data showed prompt a thoroughly reconsideration of the pathological framing of these lesions.

Background: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a novel anticancer therapy that combines the delivery of trains of appropriate waveforms with the local administration of chemotherapy agents. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the adjuvant potentials of ECT for the treatment of incompletely excised mast cell tumors (MCT)., Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight privately-owned dogs with incompletely removed MCT were treated with intralesional bleomycin (1.5 IU/cm2) followed by the application of trains of biphasic pulses (8 pulses, 1300 V/cm, 50 + 50 micros duration, 1 Hz frequency)., Results: The overall response rate was 85% with a mean estimated time to recurrence of 52.76 +/- 6.5 months (range: 39.99 to 65.54 months, 95% CI). At the time of writing this report, the median survival time was not reached. Three dogs died of metastatic disease that they developed at the same time of local recurrence, one developed multiple cutaneous nodules at different locations and one with recurrence was re-treated and is currently disease-free after 22 months. No major local or systemic toxicities were noted for the duration of the study., Conclusion: ECT is a safe and effective therapy for incompletely excised MCTs in companion animals. Its ease of administration, lack of toxicities and low cost make it an attractive alternative to standard treatments and warrants further investigation.
