Abstract

Voice assistants have become embedded in people’s private spaces and domestic lives where they gather enormous amounts of personal information which is why they evoke serious privacy concerns. The paper reports the findings from a mixed-method study with 65 digital natives, their attitudes to privacy and actual and intended behaviour in privacy-sensitive situations and contexts. It also presents their recommendations to governments or organisations with regard to protecting their data. The results show that the majority are concerned about privacy but are willing to disclose personal data if the benefits outweigh the risks. The prevailing attitude is one characterised by uncertainty about what happens with their data, powerlessness about controlling their use, mistrust in big tech companies and uneasiness about the lack of transparency. Few take steps to self-manage their privacy, but rely on the government to take measures at the political and regulatory level. The respondents, however, show scant awareness of existing or planned legislation such as the GDPR and the Digital Services Act, respectively. A few participants are anxious to defend the analogue world and limit digitalization in general which in their opinion only opens the gate to surveillance and misuse.

Abstract

With the increasing proliferation of security-critical voice-based services such as voice banking, user authentication on smart speakers is becoming a vital requirement. Prior research on verifying the speaker’s identity has been taken a technical perspective predominantly, while respective user-centered research is scarce. To investigate authentication methods for smart speakers from a user’s perspective, we conducted a multi-method experiment. In a comprehensive online survey (n = 696) and a comparative lab study (n = 18) with an advanced functional prototype we studied 6 authentication methods (spoken PIN, biometrics, app with button/voice confirmation, card reader, sound authentication) regarding their perceived security and ease of use. While token-based authentication approaches (in particular an authenticator app on a smartphone) typically are perceived as more secure, they are found inferior when it comes to the ease of use. The currently most frequently used authentication method for smart speakers, the spoken PIN method, seems to represent a compromise between security and ease of use. The sophisticated sound authentication was appreciated for its ease of use, however, was rated worst regarding the perceived security.

Abstract

Past work showed great promise in biometric user identification and authentication through exploiting specific features of specific body parts. We investigate human motion across the whole body, to explore what parts of the body exhibit more unique movement patterns, and are more suitable to identify users in general. We collect and analyze full-body motion data across various activities (e.g., sitting, standing), handheld objects (uni- or bimanual), and tasks (e.g., watching TV or walking). Our analysis shows, e.g., that gait as a strong feature amplifies when carrying items, game activity elicits more unique behaviors than texting on a smartphone, and motion features are robust across body parts whereas posture features are more robust across tasks. Our work provides a holistic reference on how context affects human motion to identify us across a variety of factors, useful to inform researchers and practitioners of behavioral biometric systems on a large scale.

Abstract

The effective delivery of e-learning depends on the continuous monitoring and management of student attention. While instructors in traditional classroom settings can easily assess crowd attention through gaze cues, these cues are largely unavailable in online learning environments. To address this challenge and highlight the significance of our study, we collected eye movement data from twenty students and developed four visualization methods: (a) a heat map, (b) an ellipse map, (c) two moving bars, and (d) a vertical bar, which were overlaid on 13 instructional videos. Our results revealed unexpected preferences among the instructors. Contrary to expectations, they did not prefer the established heat map and vertical bar for live online instruction. Instead, they chose the less intrusive ellipse visualization. Nevertheless, the heat map remained the preferred choice for retrospective analysis due to its more detailed information. Importantly, all visualizations were found to be useful and to help restore emotional connections in online learning. In conclusion, our innovative visualizations of crowd attention show considerable potential for a wide range of applications, extending beyond e-learning to all online presentations and retrospective analyses. The significant results of our study underscore the critical role these visualizations will play in enhancing both the effectiveness and emotional connectedness of future e-learning experiences, thereby facilitating the educational landscape.

Automation has been permeating our everyday lives in various facets. Given both the ubiquity and, in many cases, the indispensability of ubiquitous automated systems, creating engaging experiences with them becomes increasingly relevant. This workshop provides a platform for researchers and practitioners working on (semi-)automated systems and their user experience and allows for cross-discipline networking and knowledge transfer. In a keynote talk, paper presentations, discussions, and hands-on sessions, the participants will explore and discuss user engagement with automation for operation, appropriation, and change. The results of the workshop are a set of research ideas and drafts of joint research projects to drive further automation experience research in a collaborative interdisciplinary manner

Abstract

Engaging stakeholders in capturing contextual requirements for automated transport systems can be a challenging task, especially when they are locally distributed and limitations such as traveling restriction hinder personal presence. This paper presents experiences from hybrid site visits applied in contextual inquiry studies related to automated ground transport systems. The results rely on in-depth interviews and a follow-up survey with organizers and participants of the hybrid site visits. Initial findings reveal that physical participation is the preferred mode of attendance for contextual inquiry. Online participation may complement physical observations. However, the interaction between remote and on-site participants needs to be well facilitated, e.g. by own remote facilitator taking care of questions in the online chat.

Abstract

Voice assistants (VAs), typically promoted as omniscient conversational butlers, still remain below users' expectations. Interaction designers seem to struggle bringing in user perspectives necessary to develop more meaningful VA applications beyond simple use cases such as playing music. One of the reasons might be the immateriality of cloud-based VA technology making it difficult to comprehend such complex and ever-evolving systems. In this paper, we investigate provotyping as a design tool for 'materialising the immaterial'. In our case study, teams of multidisciplinary experts devised twelve provotypes to explore intangible VA technology. We present and discuss three generalisations in respect to the role of provotypes for the exploration of VAs. With the deployment of automated vehicle fleets, there will be a corresponding need for managing and operating vehicles remotely. This paper introduces the challenges for the human interface of such future automated fleet management interactions. Based on an analysis of the emerging operator workplace and digitization trends in the logistics domain, key requirements for human interface characteristics for these novel systems are proposed. By means of an expert-based review of human interfaces for automated logistics fleet interaction systems, the current status with regard to the accomplishment of these requirements is analyzed. Next steps towards realizing future automated logistics fleet interactions are outlined.

Abstract

Over the last decade, various governments across the globe have invested in efforts aimed at a more participatory governance that would bring citizens and representatives closer together while benefiting both sides. These efforts include informing citizens about ongoing and future plans in city making, facilitating dialogues between those two groups, as well as empowering citizens to resolve issues themselves. Holding advantages for the different stakeholders, involving citizens in various stages of decision-making processes might not only increase transparency and eventually trust, but also raise their acceptance of the decisions being made. The aim is to ultimately improve satisfaction and the quality of life.
