The properties of CdW[O.sub.4] (CWO) crystals in gamma spectrometry were studied. Several small samples of 10 x 10 x 3 mm size, typically used in CT X-ray detectors, were tested and then compared to the performance of a larger crystal of 20 mm in diameter and 20 mm in height. The light output, energy resolution, and nonproportionality of the CWO response versus gamma-ray energy, were measured and compared with those of a small BGO to discuss further the origin of the intrinsic resolution of pure undoped scintillating crystals. A high light output of 6500 [+ or -] 200 phe/MeV and a good energy resolution of 6.6 [+ or -] 0.2% for 662 keV gamma rays from a [sup.137]Cs source were measured for the small samples coupled to an XP3212 photomultiplier. Common nonproportionality curves and consequently common intrinsic resolutions of small CWO and BGO suggest that they represent fundamental characteristics of the heavy oxide scintillating material themselves. Index Terms--CdW[O.sub.4], energy resolution, non-proportionality, scintillators.

This work presents the results from experiments performed on [Lu.sub.2]Si[O.sub.5] :Ce (LSO:Ce). It looks for potential correlations of light yield nonproportionality and other scintillation properties such as intrinsic energy resolution with thermoluminescence properties. The analyzed samples were chosen from various crystal batches having significantly different properties. Single crystal LSO:Ce samples were coupled to an XP2020Q photomultiplier and to large area avalanche photodiodes and measured as a function of [gamma]-ray energy between 14.7 and 1770 keV at room temperature and also near liquid nitrogen temperature. To explain the experimental results obtained from spectrometric methods, the properties of the samples were further studied using thermoluminescence techniques within the temperature range from 250 K to 600 K. The relationships between data obtained from these two types of experiments are reported.

The performance of a new Photonis XP1472 ninechannel photomultiplier (PMT) was studied with the main emphasis to the photoelectron numbers and photoelectron collection efficiency, as measured with a 10 mm diameter NaI(TI) crystal coupled to the separate channels. Simultaneously, energy resolution and crosstalk were measured for all channels with a a37Cs source. Time jitter and time resolution for an LSO crystal coupled to the different channels were measured for 511 keV annihilation quanta and compared to those measured earlier with XP2020Q PMTs. The studies confirmed high photoelectron collection efficiency in the PMT due to a new design of the input focalization system. Index Terms--Fast timing, PET detectors, multi-channel photomultipliers, photomultipliers.

Photoelectric multipliers -- Product development ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
Performances of new fast XP20Y0/DA and XP20Y0Q/DA 8 stage photomultipliers (PMTs) equipped with a screening grid at the anode were studied. The time jitter of the new PMTs was measured using a fast light pulser based on an XP22 light emitting diode. The timing properties in coincidence experiments were measured with Ba[F.sub.2], LSO, and La[Cl.sub.3] : Ce crystals for [sup.60]Co and [sup.22]Na gamma rays and discussed in terms of the measured photoelectron numbers. Particularly, the normalized time resolutions to the number of photoelectrons measured with Ba[F.sub.2] crystals were comparable to that measured in the past with the XP2020Q in a superior dynode-timing mode. A significant improvement of timing up to a factor of 1.2 due to the grid at the anode was shown also in the measurements with LSO and La[Cl.sub.3]:Ce crystals. Index Terms--Fast timing with Ba[F.sub.2], La[Cl.sub.3] : Ce, and LSO scintillators, photomuitipliers, scintillation detectors.

Nuclear physics -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
The intrinsic energy resolution and nonproportionality of the light yield as a function of gamma ray energies, in the energy range of 14 keV to 1.33 MeV, were studied for small BGO ([Bi.sub.4] [Ge.sub.3] [O.sub.12]) crystals at room and liquid nitrogen (L[N.sub.2]) temperatures. The study showed that the intrinsic resolution of BGO and the light yield nonproportionality as a function of energy do not depend on the crystal temperature. High light outputs of 14000 [+ or -] 300 electron-hole pairs and energy resolution of 6.5% [+ or -] 0.2% for 662 keV gamma rays were measured with the 9 mm diameter, 4 mm thick crystals, coupled to large area avalanche photodiodes and cooled down to L[N.sub.2] temperature. Special attention was paid to analyzing the energy resolution of the escape peaks, which were well separated from the full-energy peaks due to the good energy resolution of BGO at L[N.sub.2] temperatures and the energy of bismuth KX-rays. The intrinsic energy resolution of the BGO crystal for escape peaks does not show deviations from analysis of total energy absorption photopeaks. This is in spite of the fact that the contributions of X-rays and Auger electron cascade in creation of escape peaks are much smaller than in full-energy peaks. In the small volume crystal, mainly electrons produced in the photoelectric absorption create the escape peaks. Index Terms--Avalanche photodiodes, BGO, energy resolution, light yield nonproportionality, scintillators.

Three pure NaI crystals grown in different batches by Scionix (The Netherlands) were studied at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. The room temperature studies performed with photomultiplier readout covered measurements of emission spectra, photoelectrons yield and energy resolution. Moreover, the scintillation light pulses were measured by single photon method. Two crystals showed the photoelectron yield of about 1000 phe/MeV measured at room temperature with an XP2020Q photomultiplier. The energy resolution of the 662 keV photopeak was measured to be about 16% and was limited mainly by a low number of photoelectrons and a large nonproportionality of the light yield. The fast light pulse had the main decay time components of 1 and 5 ns. The high initial photon intensity of the tested NaI crystals revealed a good timing resolution of about 140 ps obtained for [sup.60]Co [gamma]-rays. At liquid nitrogen temperatures the measurements of light yield and energy resolution were performed using an Advanced Photonix, Inc. avalanche photodiode readout. A high light output above 80 000 ph/MeV was measured for the best of the tested crystals. The energy resolutions of the 662 keV photopeak of the three crystals differ a lot, varying from an excellent value of 3.8% to 6.2%. This suggests that the measured energy resolutions depend on the purity of the scintillator samples reflected in the emission spectra. The studies that were performed demonstrate the attractive properties of pure NaI at both room and [LN.sub.2] temperature. Index Terms--Avalanche photodiodes (APDs), energy resolution, nonproportionality of light yield, pure NaI, scintillators.

PET imaging -- Testing ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
Prompted by recent interest in positron emission tomography scanners equipped with LuAP:Ce (LuAl[O.sub.3]:Ce) scintillators read by avalanche photodiodes, we have measured timing properties of this scintillating material with large-area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPDs) from Advanced Photonix, Inc. (API). We have obtained a time resolution of 1.16 [+ or -] 0.06 ns for 511-keV peak from a [sup.22]Na source with energy threshold set at 400 keV and 680 [+ or -] 35 ps for [sup.60]Co source with energy threshold set at 1 MeV. The dependence of time resolution on LAAPD gain was measured showing improved timing at gains over 200, but at the cost of higher excess noise. Comparing the time resolution of LuAP:Ce and LSO:Ce measured with LAAPD and photomultipliers, we discuss the dependence of timing properties on the light output and decay time of these scintillators. Index Terms--Avalanche photodiodes (APDs), lutetiium compounds, scintillation detector, timing.

Rare earth metals -- Research ,Ions -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
The ability of activator ions to capture charge carriers and assume a different charge state under ionizing radiation is essential for efficient performance of rare-earth (RE)-doped scintillator materials utilizing the carrier recombination energy. In this paper the sequence of carrier trapping is discussed and interpreted using a simple, single-configuration-coordinate model for two different cases: In one case (LuP[O.sub.4]:Ce, YAl[O.sub.3]:Ce, LuAl[O.sub.3]:Ce) the charge state involved in the scintillation mechanism is [Ce.sup.4+], while in the other (LuP[O.sub.4]:Yb, YbP[O.sub.4]) it is Y[b.sup.2+]. The possibility of a nonradiative recombination via Ce and Yb ions is also considered and found highly unlikely in accordance with experimental results.

A new scintillator, LuAl[O.sub.3]:Ce, has been found to have properties that put it in the forefront when stopping power and timing is of importance. This material, an extension of other well known cerium-doped scintillators, the yttrium-based orthoaluminate and garnet, can be readily pulled from the melt, and displays particularly promising performance. We summarize the results achieved when Y is replaced by Lu in this class of oxide crystals.

Fluorides -- Research ,Radiation chemistry -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
In this paper we review solved and some of remaining problems in development of Ce[F.sub.3] scintillator. Ce[F.sub.3] emerges as a dense (6.16 g/cc), fast (23 ns), and reasonably efficient (2400 photons/MeV) material with potential applications in high energy and nuclear physics experiments. Despite significant progress in technology the level of uncontrolled impurities and defects in present crystals is still too high, posing problems like scintillation light trapping and radiation damage. We speculate about the possibility of electron self-trapping and nonradiative recombination at Ce sites leading to limited light output and intrinsic radiation hardness of Ce[F.sub.3].

We report initial results for a new class of scintillating materials, cerium doped rare earth orthophosphates. The most promising is Ce:LuP|O.sub.4~, which under |Gamma~-excitation shows fast, single-exponential decay, of 25 ns at room temperature, and a light output of 17,200 photons per 1 MeV. These features combined with a reasonable density, (6.53 g/|cm.sup.3~), make it a strong contender for many applications.

- Abstract
Bi3+ codoping has been proposed in this work with a twofold objective, namely, enhancing the luminescence emission of Eu3+:LaF3 nanoparticles (NPs) and increasing their X-ray attenuation capacity, with the purpose of obtaining a bimodal bioprobe for luminescence bioimaging and X-ray computed tomography. The synthesis method, reported here for the first time for LaF3 particles, allowed obtaining uniform, nonaggregated NPs using a homogeneous precipitation in polyol medium at room temperature in just 2 h. The simplicity of the synthesis method allows the large-scale production of NPs. LaF3 NPs with different Eu3+ contents were first synthesized to find the critical Eu3+ concentration, producing the highest emission intensity. This concentration was subsequently used to fabricate Bi3+-Eu3+-codoped LaF3 NPs using the same method. The emission intensity of the codoped NPs increased in more than one order of magnitude, thanks to the possibility of excitation through the Bi3+ ¿ Eu3+ energy-transfer band. The luminescence properties of the codoped NPs were analyzed in detail to find the mechanism responsible for the emission enhancement. Finally, it was demonstrated that the high atomic number of Bi3+, higher than that of lanthanides, was an added value of the material because it increased its X-ray attenuation capacity. In summary, the LaF3 NPs codoped with Eu3+ and Bi3+ presented in this work are promising candidates as a bimodal bioprobe for luminescence bioimaging and X-ray computed tomography.

Several scintillation detectors containing LSO, YAP, and BGO crystals coupled to 5 mm in diameter beveled-edge large area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPD) were studied. These configurations were chosen to address requirements of high-resolution Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The number of electron-hole pairs, energy resolution for 511 kev [Gamma]-rays, detection efficiency, and timing properties were measured in various configurations to establish best operating conditions for these detectors. The obtained results point towards a possibility of replacing photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in PET with LAAPDs, leading potentially to more compact, reliable, and accurate systems.

Crystals -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
We have studied the nonproportionality and intrinsic energy resolution of cerium doped YSO, GSO, LSO and LGSO crystals. While LSO and YSO have similar light output, GSO and LGSO have ca. 70% and 20% lower light output than LSO, respectively. YSO, a compound containing fairly light elements, was expected to have proportional light output vs. energy, like YAP:Ce. Surprisingly it has almost the same nonproportional as LSO and GSO. The nonproportionality of YSO is followed by large values of intrinsic energy resolution. The comparison of the nonproportionality of YSO -- LSO and YAP -- LuAP pairs indicates that high proportionality is connected with the structure of the crystal and not with the presence of light elements. To our knowledge, this is the first study of nonproportionality and intrinsic resolution for LGSO.

LSO:Ce and LYSO:Ce scintillators are candidates for the pre-shower detector for the search for [[micro].sup.+] [right arrow] [e.sup.+] [Gamma] decay with the branching-ratio sensitivity of [10.sup.-14] at PSI (Villigen, Switzerland). The detection involves 52.8 MeV [Gamma]-rays. To study the response of the crystals to high energy [Gamma]-rays we have chosen a Pu-Be neutron source which gives mono-energetic 4.439 MeV [Gamma]-rays due to the [sup.9]Be([Alpha],n) reaction. We have studied the response of a [Phi]60xl0 mm YSO:0.2%Ce crystal and a half disk of [Phi]60xl0 mm LSO:0.2%Ce. Despite the large background of [sup.176]Lu, the high energy [Gamma]-rays can be detected efficiently. We have also studied the response to lower energy [Gamma]-rays (from [sup.137]Cs and [sup.60]Co sources) and found the conditions of optimum work. The YSO crystal detects 4.439 MeV [Gamma]-rays primarily by double 511 keV escapes that form a distinct peak in the energy spectrum.

Cerium -- Physiological aspects ,Scission (Chemistry) -- Research ,Nuclear spectroscopy -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
We measured photoelectron yield, light output, decay times of the light pulses, cerium concentration, energy resolution and time resolution of LSO:Ce manufactured by different laboratories and LGSO:Ce. The LSO samples show excellent scintillation properties: high light output, close to 30,000 ph/MeV and good energy resolution of 7.3% FWHM for [sup.137]Cs [Gamma]-source full energy peak. Time resolution measured in geometry fulfilling the PET scanners requirements is equal to 450 ps. We also present results from the measurements with LGSO:Ce by Hitachi Chemical Co., which is of similar chemical composition to LSO. LGSO, at present stage of development, shows about 20% lower light output than LSO and energy resolution of 12.4% FWHM for 662 keV [Gamma]-rays. LSO crystals used in our studies posses similar in scintillation properties, although we suppose that the details of the productions method are different due to the differences in Ce concentration. LGSO is a new and very promising scintillator due to lower background radiation in comparison to LSO, but it features worse energy resolution and smaller number of photoelectrons.

X-rays -- Spectra ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
The relative response to X-rays and light, linearity for X-rays, and the energy resolution for both X-rays and light signal from a light emitting diode (LED) light pulser were measured for 5 mm, 10 mm and 16 mm diameter Large Area Avalanche Photodiodes (LAAPDs). It has been shown that the ratio of the LAAPD gain for 5.9 keV and 16.6 keV X-rays and the gain for a light pulse from the LED light pulser was constant (within 1-2%) up to a device (optical) gain of 100. That allows using the X-ray peaks as a good reference for measuring the e-h pair number of detected light pulses, particularly from scintillators. Good linearity of the LAAPDs response to X-rays was observed up to energy of about 20 keV. The energy resolutions for light signals and X-rays were compared and discussed in the light of the statistical limitation of the resolution. The comparison showed an excellent agreement for light signal. For the X-rays, the energy resolution was affected by the non-uniformity of the gain in the active area of the photodiode, particularly observed for X-rays above 6 keV. Finally, the energy spectrum for 662 keV [Gamma]-rays from a [sup.137]Cs source detected with a YAP crystal coupled to a 16 mm LAAPD was obtained, showing the excellent energy resolution of 4.30 [+ or -] 0.15%.

Детекторы и детектирование ядерных излучений - Abstract
In the energy range E =2.8...42.2 MeV, the light output S was measured for ZnSe-based scintillators under irradiation with α- particles and heavy ions 81Br. Under such irradiation, the proportionality S(Еα,i) is observed up to energies Еα≤7 MeV. Substantial deviation from linearity in the region of higher energies is explained by different contribution to S from both primary and δ-electrons. Increases were also observed in the values of intrinsic energy resolution with shorter shaping time constants.

- Abstract
In the present study, we used a new training paradigm in the intelliCage automatic behavioral assessment system to investigate cognitive functions of the transgenic mice harboring London mutation of the human amyloid precursor protein (APP.V717I). Three groups of animals: 5-, 12- and 18-24-month old were subjected to both Water Maze training and the IntelliCage-based appetitive conditioning. The spatial memory deficit was observed in all three groups of transgenic mice in both behavioral paradigms. However, the APP mice were capable to learn normally when co-housed with the wild-type (WT) littermates, in contrast to clearly impaired learning observed when the transgenic mice were housed alone. Furthermore, in the transgenic mice kept in the Intellicage alone, the cognitive deficit of the young animals was modulated by the circadian rhythm, namely was prominent only during the active phase of the day. The novel approach to study the transgenic mice cognitive abilities presented in this paper offers new insight into cognitive dysfunctions of the Alzheimer's disease mouse model.

- Abstract
Scintillation properties of undoped YAP crystal were studied. The emission spectra show a very intense light component at 360 nm. Analysis of the light pulse shape resulted in five components, four of them, with time constants of 38+/-2 ns, 92+/-3 ns, 7.5+/-0.5 mu s and 24+/-3 mu s, representing high light intensity. The light yield was found to be temperature dependent, N-ph=3090+/-130 ph/MeV at liquid nitrogen temperature and N-ph=1440+/-60 ph/MeV at room temperature. Also the light yield non-proportionality shows temperature dependence and is more pronounced at room temperature., QC 20100525

- Abstract
The ZnSe: Te scintillator has been studied by means of a photomultiplier with an extended bialkali photocathode, a large area avalanche photodiode (LAAPD) and a PIN photodiode. The light output was determined to be 28 300+/-1700 photons/MeV. Results indicate good proportionality for light output versus gamma-ray energy. Measurements of the 662 keV gamma-ray energy spectrum recorded using a LAAPD resulted in an energy resolution of 5.4+/-0.3%. Based on these results, an intrinsic energy resolution of 3.3+/-0.7% has been calculated., QC 20100525

- Abstract
We investigate the application of LSO and YSO scintillating crystals for Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Properties such as light output, energy resolution, detection efficiency for various energy threshold, and timing resolution are presented. These data allow us to evaluate the usage of finger-like LSO:Ce and YSO:Ce crystals coupled to photomultiplier tube, and to establish optimal operating conditions for high-resolution PET. Both crystals have advantages over BGO currently used in PET and LSO is considered as a possible replacement for BGO based systems.
