Hydraulic roughness (expressed in terms of e.g. Manning's roughness coefficient) is an important input to hydraulic and hydrodynamic simulation models. One way to estimate roughness parameters is by hydraulic inversion, using observed water surface elevation (WSE) collected from gauging stations, satellite platforms or UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) −based altimeters. Specifically, UAS altimetry provides close to instantaneous observations of longitudinal profiles and seasonal variations of WSE for various river types, which are useful for calibrating roughness parameters. However, it is computationally expensive to run high−resolution hydrodynamic models for long simulation periods (e.g. multiple years), and thus global optimization of spatially and temporally distributed parameter sets for such models, e.g., spatio−temporally varying river roughness, is still challenging.This study presented an efficient calibration approach for hydraulic models, using a simplified steady-state hydraulic solver, UAS altimetry datasets, and in-situ observations. The calibration approach minimized the weighted sum of a misfit term, spatial smoothness penalty, and a sinusoidal a priori temporal variation constraint. The approach was first demonstrated for several synthetic calibration experiments and the results indicated that the global search algorithm accurately recovered the Manning–Strickler coefficients M for short river reaches in different seasons, and M varied significantly in time (due to the seasonal growth cycle of the aquatic vegetation) and space (due to, e.g. spatially variable vegetation density). Subsequently, the calibration approach was demonstrated for a real WSE dataset collected at a Danish test site, i.e., Vejle Å. Results indicated that spatio-temporal variation in M was required to accurately fit in-situ and UAS altimetry WSE observations. This study illustrated how UAS altimetry and hydraulic modeling can be combined to achieve improved understanding and better parameterization of small and medium-sized rivers, where conveyance is controlled by vegetation growth and other spatio-temporally variable factors.

The mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) into circulation from bone marrow is well known to be present in several clinical settings, including acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. The aim of this review was to explore the current literature focusing on the great opportunity that EPCs can have in terms of regenerative medicine.

In this river friction is dominated by submerged vegetation growing in the stream and shows strong seasonal and longitudinal variations due to the plant growth cycle and variable vegetation density and species composition. Results indicated that spatio-temporal variation of Κs was required to fit in-situ observations and UAS altimetry accurately. This study illustrates how UAS altimetry and hydrodynamic modeling can be combined to achieve an improved understanding and better parameterization of small and medium-sized rivers, where river channel conveyance is controlled by vegetation growth and other spatio-temporally variable factors.

Groundwater protection and risk assessment of contaminated sites (e.g. abandoned landfills, industrial waste facilities, gasoline stations, and dry cleaners) situated in complex glacial landscapes are extremely challenging. A common method to assess the risks for leakage and contamination of groundwater and surface water is to develop hydraulic models. However, reliable models need to contain information about both the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of the deposits and their hydraulic properties. Environmental risk assessments therefore require highly detailed digital 3D geological models. In order to construct models with this degree of detail, dense data coverage with high-quality data is necessary. Many studies rely of few data sources, resulting in relatively sparse data. In this study we demonstrate how 6 different data sources can be combined to gain new insight on the geological history, which is central to the subsequent 3D geological modelling. The analyses in this study include (i) geomorphology, (ii) spear-auger mapping and near-surface electromagnetic induction data, (iii) borehole analyses, (iv) geoelectrical profiling, and (v) transient electromagnetic measurements. The study area is located on the island of Samsø in the central part of Denmark, where a digital 3D geological model is constructed. The model consists of combined layer and voxel models and covers a small area (~1 km2) surrounding a former landfill (Pillemark). The near-surface geology is characterized by a dead-ice landscape formed by glaciers during the Weichselian ice-age. By interpreting the new data it has been possible to update and revise the geological history, which was used during the development of a highly detailed 3D geological model. This model was constructed combining layers and voxels in order to better represent the complex geology and incorporate all the details provided by the different data sources. The novel geological understanding was used to update the risk assessment of the Pillemark landfill, where a remedial pumping today is on-going. The immediate risk is related to the migration of landfill leachate downgradient through a lacustrine sandy aquifer and wetlands. Groundwater used for drinking water purposes is abstracted from an underlying sand and gravel aquifer (Tebbestrup formation), which is protected by a clay till (mid Danish till) found in the entire Pillemark area. A vertical hydraulic gradient from the upper to the lower aquifer indicates groundwater flow. However, the actual impact of landfill on the deeper aquifer has to be assessed by a detailed evaluation of the drainage system, pumping schemes and groundwater quality in the area. The 3D geological model is an important step toward the development of a groundwater flow model, required in order to establish a water balance for the hydrogeological system and estimate the vertical transport.

A groundwater plume containing high concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds, mainly sulfonamides, barbiturates, and ethyl urethane, in addition to chlorinated ethenes and benzene was investigated. The contamination originating from a former pharmaceutical industry discharges into a multilayered aquifer system and a downgradient stream. In this study, geological and hydrogeological data were integrated into a numerical flow model to examine identified trends using statistical approaches, including principal component analysis and hierarchal cluster analysis. A joint interpretation of the groundwater flow paths and contaminant concentrations in the different compartments (i.e., groundwater and hyporheic zone) provided insight on the transport processes of the different contaminant plumes to the stream. The analysis of historical groundwater concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds at the site suggested these compounds are slowly degrading. The pharmaceutical compounds migrate in both a deep semiconfined aquifer, as well as in the shallow unconfined aquifer, and enter the stream along a 2-km stretch. This contrasted with the chlorinated ethenes, which mainly discharge to the stream as a focused plume from the unconfined aquifer. The integrated approach developed here, combining groundwater flow modeling and statistical analyses of the contaminant concentration data collected in groundwater and the hyporheic zone, lead to an improved understanding of the observed distribution of contaminants in the unconfined and semiconfined aquifers, and thus to their discharge to the stream. This approach is particularly relevant for large and long-lasting contaminant sources and plumes, such as abandoned landfills and industrial production sites, where field investigations may be very expensive.

Background Mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) into circulation from bone marrow in patients with acute myocardial infarction has strong scientific evidence; less is known about EPC mobilization in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to investigate the association of stable ischemic heart disease with EPC levels in tissue and blood. Methods Fifty-five consecutive patients admitted to a single treatment center for valve or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgeries were included in the study. Blood samples were collected in the morning before surgery and analyzed by flow-cytometry to determine peripheral EPC levels (EPC/ml). Tissue EPC (CD34+VEGFR2+) levels were assessed on a right atrial appendage segment. Results Mean age was 76±5years, 48% were men, and 53% had CAD The number of CD34+ VEGFR2+ cells in the tissue of patients with CAD was significantly higher ( p Conclusion Patients with stable CAD had higher EPC density values (EPC/mm2) and were more likely to have lower EPC blood levels when compare with normal controls.

At contaminated sites, knowledge about geology and hydraulic properties of the subsurface and extent of the contamination is needed for assessing the risk and for designing potential site remediation. In this study, we have developed a new approach for characterizing contaminated sites through time-domain spectral induced polarization. The new approach is based on: (1) spectral inversion of the induced polarization data through a reparametrization of the Cole–Cole model, which disentangles the electrolytic bulk conductivity from the surface conductivity for delineating the contamination plume; (2) estimation of hydraulic permeability directly from the inverted parameters using a laboratory-derived empirical equation without any calibration; (3) the use of the geophysical imaging results for supporting the geological modelling and planning of drilling campaigns. The new approach was tested on a data set from the Grindsted stream (Denmark), where contaminated groundwater from a factory site discharges to the stream. Two overlapping areas were covered with seven parallel 2-D profiles each, one large area of 410 m × 90 m (5 m electrode spacing) and one detailed area of 126 m × 42 m (2 m electrode spacing). The geophysical results were complemented and validated by an extensive set of hydrologic and geologic information, including 94 estimates of hydraulic permeability obtained from slug tests and grain size analyses, 89 measurements of water electrical conductivity in groundwater, and four geological logs. On average the IP-derived and measured permeability values agreed within one order of magnitude, except for those close to boundaries between lithological layers (e.g. between sand and clay), where mismatches occurred due to the lack of vertical resolution in the geophysical imaging. An average formation factor was estimated from the correlation between the imaged bulk conductivity values and the water conductivity values measured in groundwater, in order to convert the imaging results from bulk conductivity to water conductivity. The geophysical models were actively used for supporting the geological modelling and the imaging of hydraulic permeability and water conductivity allowed for a better discrimination of the clay/lignite lithology from the pore water conductivity. Furthermore, high water electrical conductivity values were found in a deep confined aquifer, which is separated by a low-permeability clay layer from a shallow aquifer. No contamination was expected in this part of the confined aquifer, and confirmation wells were drilled in the zone of increased water electrical conductivity derived from the geophysical results. Water samples from the new wells showed elevated concentrations of inorganic compounds responsible for the increased water electrical conductivity in the confined aquifer and high concentrations of xenobiotic organic contaminants such as chlorinated ethenes, sulfonamides and barbiturates.

Linking biogeochemical processes to water flow paths and solute travel times is important for understanding internal catchment functioning and control of water quality. Base cation weathering is a process closely linked to key factors affecting catchment functioning, including water pathways, soil contact time, and catchment characteristics, particularly in silicate-dominated areas. However, common process-based weathering models are often calibrated and applied for individual soil profiles, which can cause problems when trying to extrapolate results to catchment scale and assess consequences for stream water and groundwater quality. Therefore, in this work, base cation export was instead modelled using a fully calibrated 3D hydrological model (Mike SHE) of a boreal catchment, which was expanded by adding a relatively simple but still reasonably flexible and versatile weathering module including the base cations Na, K, Mg, and Ca. The results were evaluated using a comprehensive dataset of water chemistry from groundwater and stream water in 14 nested sub-catchments, representing different catchment sizes and catchment characteristics. The strongest correlations with annual and seasonal observations were found for Ca (r = 0.89-0.93, p < 0.05), Mg (r = 0.90-0.95, p < 0.05), and Na (r = 0.80-0.89, p < 0.05). These strong correlations suggest that catchment hydrology and landscape properties primarily control weathering rates and stream dynamics of these solutes. Furthermore, catchment export of Mg, Ca, and K was strongly connected to travel times of discharging stream water (r = 0.78-0.83). Conversely, increasing Na export was linked to a reduced areal proportion of mires (r = -0.79). The results suggest that a significant part (~45%) of the catchment stream export came from deep-soil weathering sources (>2.5 m). These results have implications for terrestrial and aquatic water quality assessments. If deep soils are present, focusing mainly on the shallow soil could lead to misrepresentation of base cation availability and the acidification sensitivity of groundwater and water recipients such as streams and lakes.
