Abstract

This paper studies the impact of immigration policy on financial markets. I estimate the cumulative abnormal returns surrounding two events the effective start date of the Immigration Act of 1990 and the implementation of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of Nicaragua and Honduras in 1999. Focusing on agriculture, construction, and manufacturing firms, I find that the CARs surrounding the events are indeed positive and significant, suggesting that the market anticipated growth among industries that are likely to hire Central American immigrants.

Abstract

Background: The sinonasal microbiota has been implicated in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) pathogenesis, particularly related to the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus epidermidis is also prevalent within the sinonasal microbiota and may inhibit S. aureus colonization. We investigated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer pairs for measuring absolute abundances of S. aureus and S. epidermidis, then compared bacterial community composition and absolute abundances of these species between CRS patients and controls. Methods: Six candidate Staphylococcus species‐specific primer pairs were tested in silico and in vitro against pure bacterial isolates. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) for absolute quantification of S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and overall bacterial load were assessed in 40 CRS (CRS without nasal polyposis [CRSsNP] = 22, CRS with nasal polyposis [CRSwNP] = 18) patients and 14 controls. Amplicon sequencing of the V3‐V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) bacterial gene were conducted to investigate community composition. Results: Primer pairs targeting the gmk gene of S. aureus and nrd gene from S. epidermidis were the most specific and sensitive primers. S. aureus (CRSsNP = 81.8% occurrence, CRSwNP = 83%, control = 92.9%) and S. epidermidis (CRSsNP = 95.5%, CRSwNP = 100%, control = 92.9%) were very prevalent, as indicated by qPCR results. Both CRSsNP and CRSwNP had significantly (p < 0.05) higher bacterial load when compared with controls (p < 0.05 for both). No significant correlation was observed between S. aureus and S. epidermidis abundances (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Bacterial community sequencing detected Staphylococcus‐assigned sequences in nearly all patients; however, it could not differentiate between S. aureus and S. epidermidis. Abstract

Headquarters AFRC is proposing an aircraft replacement for the 445 AW based at WPAFB, Ohio. The 445 AW currently possesses ten C-5 Primary Assigned Aircraft (PAA). The ten C-5 aircraft would be replaced by eight C-17 PAA and one C-17 Backup Aircraft Inventory (BAI), for a total of nine C-17 aircraft stationed at WPAFB. For analysis, eight C-17 PAA are evaluated because one C-17 BAI would only operate if one or more PAA were unable to fly. The ten C-5 aircraft are expected to be retired or transferred over the next several years. The aircraft conversion, if implemented, would begin in Fiscal Year (FY) 11 and end in FY12. The drawdown of C-5s would begin in FY11. The Proposed Action would provide the necessary facility modifications to enable 445 AW aircrews to perform readiness training operations and ensure that mission requirements for C-17 aircraft are met and sustained. This EA evaluates the Proposed Action and the No Action Alternative. Resources considered in the impact analysis are airspace management, land use, air quality, noise, geological resources, water resources, biological resources, cultural resources, socioeconomics and environmental justice, infrastructure, health and safety, and hazardous materials and wastes. Analyses in this document identify minor short-term adverse impacts on air quality and noise resulting from the proposed construction activities related to the facility modifications and the operation of the C-17 aircraft. Abstract

We present an approach which uses 2D and 3D landmarks for solving the correspondence problem in Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) in cognitive robot mapping. The nodes in the topological map are a representation for each local space the robot visits. The 2D approach is feature based - a neural network algorithm is used to learn a landmark signature from a set of features extracted from each local space representation. Newly encountered local spaces are classified by the neural network as to how well they match the signatures of the nodes in the topological network. The 3D landmarks are computed from camera views of the local space. Using multiple 2D views, identified landmarks are projected, with their correct location and orientation into 3D world space by scene reconstruction. As the robot moves around the local space, extracted landmarks are integrated into the ASR's scene representation which comprises the 3D landmarks. The landmarks for an ASR scene are compared against the landmark scenes for previously constructed ASRs to determine when the robot is revisiting a place it has been to before.
