Abstract

This study introduces a novel approach to simulating legislative processes using LLM-driven virtual agents, focusing on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee. We developed agents representing individual senators and placed them in simulated committee discussions. The agents demonstrated the ability to engage in realistic debate, provide thoughtful reflections, and find bipartisan solutions under certain conditions. Notably, the simulation also showed promise in modeling shifts towards bipartisanship in response to external perturbations. Our results indicate that this LLM-driven approach could become a valuable tool for understanding and potentially improving legislative processes, supporting a broader pattern of findings highlighting how LLM-based agents can usefully model real-world phenomena. Future works will focus on enhancing agent complexity, expanding the simulation scope, and exploring applications in policy testing and negotiation.

4. Rapid 2D 23Na MRI of the calf using a denoising convolutional neural network

Abstract

23Na MRI can be used to quantify in-vivo tissue sodium concentration (TSC), but the low 23Na signal leads to long scan times and/or noisy or low-resolution images. Reconstruction algorithms such as CS have been proposed to mitigate low SNR; although, these can result in unnatural images, suboptimal denoising and long processing times. Recently, ML has been used to denoise 1H MRI acquisitions; however, this approach typically requires large volumes of high-quality training data, which is not readily available for 23Na MRI. Here, we train a denoising CNN using 1H data, which we subsequently demonstrate on prospective 23Na images of the calf. 1893 1H transverse slices of the knee were used to train denoising CNNs for different levels of noise. Low SNR images were generated by adding gaussian noise to the high-quality 1H kspace data before reconstruction to create paired training data. For prospective testing, 23Na images of the calf were acquired in 10 volunteers with 150 averages, which were used as a reference throughout the study. From this data, lower-average images were reconstructed using a NUFFT as well as CS, with the NUFFT images subsequently denoised using the trained CNN. CNNs were successfully applied to 23Na images reconstructed with 50, 40 and 30 averages. SNR was significantly higher in CNN images compared to NUFFT, CS and reference images. Edge sharpness was equivalent for all images. For image quality ranking, CNN images ranked equally best with reference images and significantly better than NUFFT and CS images. Muscle and skin TSC quantification from CNN images were equivalent to those from CS images, with <0.9 mM bias compared to reference values. Denoising CNNs trained on 1H data can be successfully applied to 23Na images of the calf; thus, allowing scan time to be reduced from 10 minutes to 2 minutes with little impact on image quality or TSC quantification accuracy., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables. Abstract

Tuning particle accelerators is a challenging and time-consuming task, but can be automated and carried out efficiently through the use of suitable optimization algorithms. With successful applications at various facilities, Bayesian optimization using Gaussian process modeling has proven to be a particularly powerful tool to address these challenges in practice. One of its major benefits is that it allows incorporating prior information, such as knowledge about the shape of the objective function or predictions based on archived data, simulations or surrogate models, into the model. In this work, we propose the use of a neural network model as an efficient way to include prior knowledge about the objective function into the Bayesian optimization process to speed up convergence. We report results obtained in simulations and experiments using neural network priors to perform optimization of electron and heavy-ion accelerator facilities, specifically the Linac Coherent Light Source and the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System. Finally, we evaluate how the accuracy of the prior mean predictions affect optimization performance.

Abstract

Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system1. Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests2-5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced6 and satellite-derived approaches2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151-363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets.

Abstract

Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Abstract

Abstract: The tropical forest carbon sink is known to be drought sensitive, but it is unclear which forests are the most vulnerable to extreme events. Forests with hotter and drier baseline conditions may be protected by prior adaptation, or more vulnerable because they operate closer to physiological limits. Here we report that forests in drier South American climates experienced the greatest impacts of the 2015–2016 El Niño, indicating greater vulnerability to extreme temperatures and drought. The long-term, ground-measured tree-by-tree responses of 123 forest plots across tropical South America show that the biomass carbon sink ceased during the event with carbon balance becoming indistinguishable from zero (−0.02 ± 0.37 Mg C ha−1 per year). However, intact tropical South American forests overall were no more sensitive to the extreme 2015–2016 El Niño than to previous less intense events, remaining a key defence against climate change as long as they are protected.

Abstract

Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species1,2. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies3,4. Here, leveraging global tree databases5-7, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions.

22. Correlates of Peer Classroom Connectedness among Undergraduate Women in STEM

Abstract

Women are underrepresented in physical science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (pSTEM) at the undergraduate level and beyond, and there is mounting evidence that such disparities are driven by cultural and environmental influences. This study explored one underresearched environmental context--perceptions of peer connectedness within the STEM classroom--and its concurrent and longitudinal relations with outcomes of importance for undergraduate women in pSTEM, including academic major self-efficacy, belongingness in their major, belongingness at the university, STEM interests, and course grade. First- and second-year women (N = 258) who were interested in majoring in a pSTEM field self-selected to participate in a longitudinal study across two semesters. Students' perceptions of peer connectedness in their STEM classroom had positive concurrent and longitudinal relations with academic self-efficacy, major belonging, and university belonging (but not interest in STEM or course grade). In longitudinal analyses that controlled for earlier levels of the outcome variables, perceived peer connectedness in the classroom was also associated with greater feelings of belonging in the major the following semester, but not with self-efficacy, university belonging, or STEM interest. These results suggest that, by fostering connections among students in the classroom, instructors may be able to increase women STEM students' broader sense of belonging within their majors.

Abstract

Combining genomic and geospatial data can be useful for understanding Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission in high-burden tuberculosis (TB) settings. We performed whole-genome sequencing on M. tuberculosis DNA extracted from sputum cultures from a population-based TB study conducted in Gaborone, Botswana, during 2012-2016. We determined spatial distribution of cases on the basis of shared genotypes among isolates. We considered clusters of isolates with ≤5 single-nucleotide polymorphisms identified by whole-genome sequencing to indicate recent transmission and clusters of ≥10 persons to be outbreaks. We obtained both molecular and geospatial data for 946/1,449 (65%) participants with culture-confirmed TB; 62 persons belonged to 5 outbreaks of 10-19 persons each. We detected geospatial clustering in just 2 of those 5 outbreaks, suggesting heterogeneous spatial patterns. Our findings indicate that targeted interventions applied in smaller geographic areas of high-burden TB identified using integrated genomic and geospatial data might help interrupt TB transmission during outbreaks.

Abstract

Systems driven by Brownian motion are ubiquitous. A prevailing challenge is inferring, from data, the diffusion and kinetic parameters that describe these stochastic processes. In this work, we investigate a multi-state diffusion process that arises in the context of single particle tracking (SPT), wherein the motion of a particle is governed by a discrete set of diffusive states, and the tendency of the particle to switch between these states is modeled as a random process. We consider two models for this behavior: a mixture model and a hidden Markov model (HMM). For both, we adopt a Bayesian approach to sample the distributions of the underlying parameters and implement a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) scheme to compute the posterior distributions, as in Das, Cairo, Coombs (2009). The primary contribution of this work is a study of the robustness of this method to infer parameters of a three-state HMM, and a discussion of the challenges and degeneracies that arise from considering three states. Finally, we investigate the problem of determining the number of diffusive states using model selection criteria. We present results from simulated data that demonstrate proof of concept, as well as apply our method to experimentally measured single molecule diffusion trajectories of monomeric phosphoinositide-dependent kinase-1 (PDK1) on a synthetic target membrane where it can associate with its binding partner protein kinase C alpha isoform (PKC$\alpha$) to form a heterodimer detected by its significantly lower diffusivity. 42. Predictors of Breastfeeding Duration in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study

Abstract

Introduction Breastfeeding has significant health benefits for infants and birthing persons, including reduced risk of chronic disease. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively breastfeeding infants for 6 months and recently extended its recommendation for continuing to breastfeed with supplementation of solid foods from one to two years. Studies consistently identify lower breastfeeding rates among US infants, with regional and demographic variability. We examined breastfeeding in birthing person-infant pairs among healthy, term pregnancies enrolled in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study between 2010 and 2017 (n = 1176). Methods Birthing persons 18-45 years old were enrolled during prenatal care visits at ~ 24-28 weeks gestation and have been followed since enrollment. Breastfeeding status was obtained from postpartum questionnaires. Birthing person and infant health and sociodemographic information was abstracted from medical records and prenatal and postpartum questionnaires. We evaluated the effects of birthing person age, education, relationship status, pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain (GWG), smoking and parity, and infant sex, ponderal index, gestational age and delivery mode on breastfeeding initiation and duration using modified Poisson and multivariable linear regression. Results Among healthy, term pregnancies, 96% of infants were breastfed at least once. Only 29% and 28% were exclusively breastfed at 6-months or received any breastmilk at 12-months, respectively. Higher birthing person age, education, and parity, being married, excessive GWG, and older gestational age at delivery were associated with better breastfeeding outcomes. Smoking, obesity, and cesarean delivery were negatively associated with breastfeeding outcomes. Abstract

We present an open source model that allows quantitative prediction of the effects of testing on the rate of spread of COVID-19 described by R, the reproduction number, and on the degree of quarantine, isolation and lockdown required to limit it. The paper uses the model to quantify the outcomes of different test types and regimes, and to identify strategies and tests that can reduce the rate of spread and R value by a factor of between 1.67 and 33.3, reducing it to between 60% and 3% of the initial value., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, in English

47. Demanding Space for Equity in the Assessment of Student Learning

Abstract

According to the authors, to infuse equity truly in assessment requires that students be actively involved in the process of assessing their own learning. Equitable assessment argues that students can demonstrate attainment of learning outcomes in many ways, and in any particular instance of assessment, students can be offered multiple ways to demonstrate learning. Equitable assessment requires interrogation of student learning data coupled with intentional examination of assumptions on how and where students learn. The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment supported space for exploring the relationship between equity and assessment of student learning with a variety of resources. In this article, they provide a framework for students and culture in assessment designed to ensure the practice and process of assessment itself became more culturally responsive. To do such work, the framework proposed that faculty and staff do the following: (1) take into account the student population served by the institution in the design of assessment approaches; (2) use language that is appropriate for all students when developing learning outcomes, such that the learning outcomes have meaning to students and not just the faculty and staff that wrote them; (3) develop and/or use assessments that are appropriate for different students whether through assignment design or alternative approaches to traditional assessments; and (4) disaggregate and interrogate assessment results and assumptions about changes that faculty and staff believe may lead to improvements in student learning.

48. Using Model Essays in Conjunction with Noticing as a Feedback Instrument in IELTS Writing Preparation

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of using IELTS model essays in conjunction with noticing as a feedback instrument on Vietnamese undergraduates' IELTS Task 2 writing performance. To investigate this, a quasi-experimental design was undertaken. The control group used the course textbook and received traditional writing feedback (i.e. direct, indirect, and peer feedback), which they drew on while composing their second drafts. Conversely, the experimental group utilized IELTS model essays in conjunction with noticing as a feedback instrument to compose their second drafts. To compare each group's writing gains, pretest and posttest writing samples were evaluated using the IELTS Task 2 rubric's overall and four subscale band scores. The data were analyzed using inferential statistics (paired-samples t-test, independent-samples t-test). The results indicated that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in all areas. As prior research specific to using IELTS model essays in conjunction with noticing as a feedback instrument with IELTS Writing Task 2 in the Vietnamese postsecondary context is noticeably absent, this paper is offered as a starting point for future investigations and discussions. The paper also discusses the topic and results' relevancy to the larger Asian context and poses suggestions for further study.

Abstract

Stronger connections are needed between employers and higher education, however, questions abound about how best to work in partnership. Stemming from various conversations with members of the higher education and employer communities, this Occasional Paper provides tips for fostering successful partnerships and collaboration. Three lessons learned from successful employer and higher education partnerships are introduced: the importance of context, tips for sparking conversation between faculty and employers, and which questions to ask one another to find common values and deeper understanding. We hope you consider some of the tips and possible conversation foci presented in this guide as you engage in relationship building and find them useful in your employer partnerships. 50. Documenting Learning: The Comprehensive Learner Record. Occasional Paper No. 46

Abstract

Traditionally, transcripts present a collection of lists of courses and grades in a format valuable for trading information between and among institutions of higher education. What if transcripts were reimagined to not only provide information on credits earned, but also provide information on learning acquired both inside and outside the classroom? What if the transcript documented learning in a digital portable record, regardless of where the learning took place or was acquired? Beginning from a partnership between the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and NASPA: Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the work to develop Comprehensive Learner Records (CLR) sought to address these questions with the help of a group of pilot institutions. The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) provided professional development support to the pilot institutions as the pilot participants mapped learning and identified assessments of learning from both within and outside of the classroom for inclusion in a formal record. This occasional paper provides an overview of the Comprehensive Learner Record as well as connection points to assessment.
