18. CO2 to Cyclic Carbonate: A Mechanistic Insight of a Benign Route Using Zinc(II) Salophen Complexes.

Abstract

Zinc(II) Schiff base complexes with different substituents at 5, 5' positions have been synthesized to study the effect of the electronic environment of the metal towards the cycloaddition reaction between CO2 and epoxide. The complexes have been characterized by FT‐IR, XPS, NMR, electronic spectroscopy, LC–MS, and TGA. We have used density functional theory to study the electronic structure of the Zn(II) complexes and modelled the electronic spectra and the mechanism of catalysis. Results obtained from DFT and LC–MS indicate the dimeric structures for all the complexes except ZnL4. The monomeric ZnL4 has the strongest electron withdrawing group, i. e. −NO2 at 5, 5' positions along with two labile water molecules attached to the Zn center. The dimeric complexes exhibit good to moderate yield for cycloaddition reaction to styrene carbonate under solvent‐free conditions and a relatively low reaction temperature of 80 °C, with CO2 pressure of ~1 atm. The best yield has been achieved by ZnL4. Different rate‐determining steps are captured by the DFT studies for dimeric and monomeric complexes. Without taking any preventing measure of dimerization by attaching the bulky tBu groups, relatively lesser catalytic amounts of all the complexes have shown yields of cyclic carbonate between 53–74 %, depending on the nature of the substituent present. Abstract

The present study was intended to evaluate the in vitro (COX-1/COX-2) and in vivo anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic activity of newer phytoconstituents isolated from the aerial parts of Swertia alata C.B. Clarke (Gentianaceae). For isolation of newer phytoconstituents, the ethanolic extract of aerial parts of S. alata was subjected to column chromatography using mixture of petroleum ether and chloroform in various concentrations, which yielded two phytoisolates characterised as nonacosyl triacontanoate (SA-3) and 8-O-glucpyranosyl-(2-acetyl)-1,3-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-xanthone (SA-9). Identification of compounds was based on melting point, UV, FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and mass spectrometric data. The isolates were screened for in vitro COX-1/COX-2 inhibitory activity, in vivo anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic activity. Among the two compounds, SA-3 was found to be more effective than SA-9. The ulcerogenic study revealed significant gastric tolerance of SA-3 and SA-9 in comparison to indomethacin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the antidiabetic and hypolipidemic action of leaf extract of Barleria cristataLinn in rats. Diabetes was induced in the rats by a single intraperitoneal (IP) injection of alloxan (150 mg/kg) and randomly divided into 7 groups. Animals were treated with low (250 mg/kg) and high (500 mg/kg) doses of ethyl acetate leaf extract (EALE) and hydro-alcoholic leaf extract (HALE) up to 21 days. The body weight and blood glucose level (BGL) were measured on weekly basis. The rats were killed under mild ether anesthesia on 21st day, blood and the vital organ were collected to estimate biochemical parameters and to study histopathological changes. A single-dose administration of alloxan induced hyperglycemia in all the groups. A regular increase in BGL was observed in toxic control groups when compared with the normal control. Daily oral administration of rats with extracts (HALE and EALE) and standard drug (Glimepiride, 5 mg/kg), reduced elevated BGL significantly (p< 0.001), and body weight was regained in diabetic rats. The extract treatment also improved the normal functioning of the liver and kidneys as evidenced by the restoration of the biochemical profile. The study revealed that B. cristatapossesses promising antidiabetic and hypolipidemic activity.

49. Exploring the Macro and Micro contextual factors influencing the entrepreneurial journey of women in high growth male dominated sectors in India

Abstract

Women entrepreneurs have been recognized as one of the most underutilized resource for economic growth in India (Vinothalakshmi and Ganesan, 2013). While the representation of women entrepreneurs is generally low, the numbers are even lower in high growth male dominated sectors like science, engineering, technology, judiciary etc. This study is based on women entrepreneurs within male dominated industries in India that have successfully been running their own venture. It explores the macro and micro contextual factors including, the role of socio-cultural factors; financial institutions; individual social networks and human capital, which influence the venture formation and growth of women owned businesses. Adopting a qualitative research methodology, this study interviews nine women entrepreneurs in masculine sectors of the industry including biotechnology, law, architecture, consultancy, technology and science. The research identifies family support, informal social networks, education and experience to play a critical role in accelerating the formation and growth of women owned entrepreneurial ventures; it also establishes financial institutions and the traditional gendered norms and mentality of the Indian society to be the major factors impeding the growth of women owned businesses in India. The research paper also identifies various coping mechanisms adopted by women entrepreneurs to fit in within the masculine domains.
