Calls for Australian universities to embed Indigenous content into curriculum are more than a decade old yet this work remains largely incomplete. Institutional commitments made at senior level to achieve these outcomes can lack direction, guidance, and support at the coalface. Using a critical reflection methodology this paper outlines the approach undertaken by a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous academics to embed a contextualised Indigenous graduate attribute into a traditional undergraduate business degree with multiple majors. The results indicate that collaborative approaches based on relationships and trust and supported with clear guidelines and processes can achieve positive outcomes. A focus on professional capabilities can enhance non-Indigenous staff confidence to teach this content and allay concerns about misappropriation of Indigenous Knowledges.

The accelerating advancement of digital technologies is providing a myriad of opportunities for nations, both economically and socially. This study was a collaboration between the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). It considered how APO member governments might approach the advancement of digital technologies to maximize benefits for their nations. Specifically, the study considered which digital technologies, industry sectors, and regulatory and policy initiatives had the greatest potential to deliver national outcomes in areas of economic growth, productivity, and social impact. Overall, the research found that virtually all countries believed that the latest wave of digital technologies would deliver significant economic and productivity growth and that having policies and regulations in place to support a digital economy was important. It also highlighted the different opportunities, constraints, and challenges that individual APO nations faced, which meant that a one-size approach would be inappropriate. So, this report outlines a range of approaches that can be employed by nations, depending on where a country is currently positioned on the spectrum of digital economic development. It provides an initial framework that can be applied to any country, and offers some useful generic approaches, while also proposing specific recommendations for countries at different stages of digital readiness. The study led us to segment APO member economies into four ‘digital economy’ groups: the embryonic, the nascent, the emergent, and the leaders. In addition, we paid particular attention to three exemplars or ‘case study countries,’ each representing a different level of economic development and digital maturity. These were: Indonesia (nascent), Malaysia (emergent), and the Republic of Korea (leaders). Recent advancements in technology such as the internet of things, 3D printing and blockchain will undoubtedly have a disruptive impact on the business models of many organisations. By examining the megatrends in emerging technologies, this chapter will examine the implications these recent advancements in technologies may have on the management practices within organisations. More specifically, this chapter will consider how these changing management practices may affect the management of global value chains (GVCs). The implications for managers and organisations in developing capabilities to support these changing management practices is fundamentally important for competitively positioning the organisation and contributing effectively within GVCs, and so a discussion on the implication for managers and management practices ensues. The conclusions in this chapter suggest that megatrends in GVCs are critically dependent on emerging technologies, which in turn require appropriate capabilities within an organisation, reflected in the management practices of the firm.

Governments worldwide are increasingly focused on promoting innovation activity to generate much needed economic growth. Innovation precincts are seen as providing the strategic opportunity to leapfrog economies and deliver a future competitive advantage. However, there are limited insights into how innovation activity in precincts takes place. In particular, the factors that enable successful innovation precincts, how they are measured and how their locations influence improved economic outcomes. This paper presents an analysis of the important enablers of innovation precincts, with a focus on measuring the relative importance of these enablers and their contribution to innovation and economic outcomes. A novel mixed-methods approach involving the use of a ‘double-blind doubled-scoring’ methodology and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) are applied to score and determine the relative importance of enablers of innovation precincts.

The emerging megatrends in healthcare and continuing digital transformation of the healthcare sector worldwide has opened up new opportunities to improve healthcare delivery as well as financial, organisational and health outcomes from many perspectives. In the context of global supply chains, the convergence of supply chain technologies, data analytics and availability of vast amounts of digital data from devices and software tools have made possible both the adaptation of people–process–technology strategies to new healthcare delivery requirements, but have also accelerated operational efficiencies in care delivery and improved access to quality healthcare and actionable data. Integrating and streamlining healthcare supply chains with internet of things (IoT) devices and sensors and leveraging the resulting data for advanced analytics at the point of decision making has the potential to provide healthcare professionals with actionable insights for planning and strategic decision-making, for both operational improvements and better care delivery. This chapter draws on an illustrative example from healthcare delivery to highlight some opportunities with analytics in patient safety initiatives and implications for healthcare supply chains.

Despite the benefits of modularisation and highly interconnected global value chains (GVCs), recent natural disasters have provided evidence that global supply chains can be quite vulnerable to interruptions. Risks in supply chains leading to interruption are not limited to natural disasters and can include fires and financial ruin (see Natarajarathinam et al., 2009). Simchi-Levi et al. (2014) have recently suggested it is the low-end commodity producers that expose highervalue system integrators to the greatest risks. For example, the Thai floods in 2011 disrupted electronics and auto supply chains across the globe – particularly affecting hard drive supplies (Tibken, 2011). Likewise, the Japanese earthquake in 2011 disrupted auto production from Japan to North America to Sweden (Glinton, 2011), as discussed in a National Public Radio interview between Glinton (interviewer) and Handler (auto industry expert).

Management of global value chains (GVCs) is a coordinated effort by the companies participating in the GVCs as well as by governments who impose trade policy instruments such as tariffs, quotas, antidumping or other barriers. In some cases, when a tariff or other barrier is imposed on a given industry in a given country by another country, that country then attempts to mitigate losses by retaliating by imposing barriers in another industry against the other country or by passing on the barrier to overseas suppliers of the given industry in other countries. This case illustrates how the Korean government may explore how to react to a trade barrier on its shipbuilding industry.

There is a strong conceptual link between the structure of global value chains (GVCs) and innovativeness. However, evidence of the link has largely been limited to the study of GVCs in industries that are purported to be innovative, and the studies have largely been at the level of an individual firm or product. This sampling bias and level of analysis creates a lack of an objective measure of innovativeness, which would enable generalisation to other firms in a given industry and with which to perform inter-industry comparison. This chapter extends the typology of global value architectures (GVAs) by Wixted and Bliemel to use the same trade data to quantify the structures of 22 industry complexes via a measure of significant sourcing pathways per economy (SPE). The SPE results are used to rank the industries according to their level of interconnectedness and then reveal how this measure of trade complex structure correlates to well-established innovation measures based on R&D intensity, alliancing and modularity. These correlations suggest that measures of trade in GVCs are complementary to these innovativeness measures. The chapter propose that these innovativeness measures can be replaced by SPE measures, as they are more objective, replicable and thus reliable measures of innovativeness which also explicitly accounts for the dispersion of innovation across regions, thereby representing the aggregate structure of all GVCs of a given industry.

We focus on the pedagogical merit of introducing and assessing Thresholds Concepts (TCs) in the curriculum with a view to (inter alia) regain public confidence and trust in the legitimacy of business education and qualifications–especially since the 2007–2010 global recession. While the education literature foregrounds the role of higher education in preparing graduates for responsible practice, we claim there has been insufficient attention to the potential that TCs hold for renewed focus on knowledge and capabilities of graduates through the vehicle of assessment. The implications are profound. In this paper, we examine a case of how the application, and assessments in particular, of TCs in a first year quantitative business subject has impacted positively on student performance in that subject as well as in subsequent subjects of which those courses depend.

Sustainability learning is holistic and complex as it draws on diverse disciplines and can be interpreted differently within individual pedagogies. Embedding sustainability across and within business schools relies on developing suitable boundary objects. These may include representations such as models, frameworks or classificatory schemes that are malleable enough to be adapted for use within the disparate disciplines and pedagogies, yet durable enough to be recognisable and to maintain consistency across them. Boundary objects thus allow the sharing of ways of knowing or practice across various social boundaries. This paper outlines how participatory curriculum development processes can enable sustainability to be embedded in a business school curriculum. Distinct phases of the process were marked by different ways of knowing, as disciplinary-specific academics developed and embedded sustainability into and across curricula. Boundary objects were both outcomes and productive facilitators of this process. They acted as catalysts and attracted ongoing processes of dialogue, debate and meaning-making between these academics. The institutional context provided enabling conditions to legitimize outcomes from the participatory process. The process may be replicable in other business schools by the use of boundary objects.

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Food supply will need to increase by around 70% from its current levels in order to meet the world population growth of 9.6 billion by 2050. Food waste is the biggest challenge in global food security, wherein approximately 20–30% of food waste occurs in the post-harvest stage of the food supply chain (FSC) in developing countries. This food waste generates significant negative environmental effects in addition to the unnecessary usage (and wastage) of resources consumed in producing the wasted food. Whilst India is the major producer and exporter of many agricultural crops, there is a lack of research that evaluates the environmental impact of the Indian FSCs. The environmental impact of the same product varies according to the resources consumed and so it is important that the environmental impact of individual supply chains be considered. Also, there is a lack of studies that uses the result of environmental impact assessment to identify the operational and resource inefficiencies in FSC and develop a framework for sustainable FSC. Thus, this study aims to identify operational and resource inefficiencies present in FSC through environmental impact assessment and propose a framework for redesigning the FSC to improve environmental sustainability. Life cycle assessment approach is used for assessing the environmental impact. This framework has been applied to a mango food supply chain.

The variation in the level of economic development across countries has been proposed as an explanation for the disparity in the level of corruption that is observed. As a country evolves from one stage of economic development to another and its social institutions as a result become more refined and sophisticated, their capacity to tackle corruption and poor governance practices becomes increasingly better. Improvements in the overall quality of institutions, including better policing and justice systems, increase their capacity to detect and deter corruption. This evolution of institutional quality improves social and economic well-being of society, which in turn pressures regulators, legislators and politicians to continue in the fight against corruption. The objective of this paper is to examine how economic development mediated by improvements in the quality of social institutions impacts on the level of corruption. Lessons from worldwide trends, including the Asia-Pacific region, provide opportunities for countries to enact strategic measures that can accelerate the fight against corruption.

© 2019, © 2019 HERDSA. Systematic changes to higher education curriculum typically occur within the extended timeframes of formal curriculum review processes. Programmes need to be reviewed periodically for internal and external accountability or to determine whether the curriculum has lost its coherence due to the accumulative effect of continual small-scale changes. These programme reviews often lend themselves to the introduction of innovations in teaching and learning however experiences suggest that these innovations are often short-lived. Even with well-thought-through project plans, adequate funding and staffing, and robust project evaluations, a curriculum innovation may fail to take hold and continue beyond the short-term. In this article we work towards developing a general framework that identifies the various factors and drivers that are essential to sustain important curriculum innovation beyond the short-term. The framework is developed from an analysis of several curriculum innovations related to the embedding of graduate attributes to highlight the important factors necessary to ensure longevity in important developments in teaching and learning.

This chapter explores the management strategies adopted by manufacturing firms operating in high versus low cost economies and investigates the reasons for differences in the management practice choices. The study reported in this chapter identifies a subset of countries that have either high or low labour costs, with USA, Sweden, and Japan being high, and India, China, and Brazil being low labour cost economies. The high labour cost manufacturing firms are found to have better management practices. In this chapter, the authors find that Australia and New Zealand manufacturing firms face relatively high labour cost but lag behind world best practice in management performance. The chapter concludes by highlighting the need for improvement in management capability for Australian and New Zealand manufacturing firms if they are to experience a reinvigoration of productivity, competitiveness, and long-term growth.

In this chapter we examine various scenarios where legislative and regulatory reforms impact on the key drivers affecting both the level and the deterrence of crime - the net effects of which influence the extent of money laundering activities. The drivers and the deterrents are described in this chapter as "push factors" (acting as deterrents to money laundering activities) and "pull factors" (acting as draw cards for money launderers). The literature however has not examined how these push and pull factors collectively affect the extent of money laundering activities when there are changes to the legislative and regulatory environment. Using data on 144 countries we examine various scenarios highlighting the influence of push and pull on the risks associated with money laundering flows into and out of Australia.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the implications for curriculum design by operationalizing threshold concepts and capabilities (TCC) in subject delivery. The motivation for undertaking this exploration is directly related to addressing public concerns for the business school curriculum. Design/methodology/approach – A post facto analysis of a compulsory subject in finance that is part of an Australian business degree and the impact on a subsequent finance subject. Findings – Customary approaches to granting part-marks in assessing students, (fractionalising) understanding of content can mean students pass subjects without grasping foundational concepts (threshold concepts) and are therefore not fully prepared for subsequent subjects. Research limitations/implications – Students passing subjects through fractionalization are poorly equipped to undertake deeper explorations in related subjects. If replicated across whole degree programs students may graduate not possessing the attributes claimed for them through their qualification. The implications for undermining public trust and confidence in qualifications are profound and disturbing. Practical implications – The literature has exposed risks associated with operationalizing threshold through assessments. This highlights a risk to public trust in qualifications. Originality/value – Operationalizing threshold concepts is an underexplored field in curriculum theory. The importance of operationalizing customary approaches to assessments through fractionalising marks goes to the legitimacy and integrity of qualifications granted by higher education. Operationalizing assessments for TCC presents profound, inescapable and essential challenges to the legitimacy of award granting institutions.
