In this study, a fully coupled hydromechanical model within the extended finite element method (XFEM)-based cohesive zone method (CZM) is employed to investigate the simultaneous height growth behavior of multi-cluster hydraulic fractures in layered porous reservoirs with modulus contrast. The coupled hydromechanical model is first verified against an analytical solution and a laboratory experiment. Then, the fracture geometry (e.g. height, aperture, and area) and fluid pressure evolutions of multiple hydraulic fractures placed in a porous reservoir interbedded with alternating stiff and soft layers are investigated using the model. The stress and pore pressure distributions within the layered reservoir during fluid injection are also presented. The simulation results reveal that stress umbrellas are easily to form among multiple hydraulic fractures’ tips when propagating in soft layers, which impedes the simultaneous height growth. It is also observed that the impediment effect of soft layer is much more significant in the fractures suppressed by the preferential growth of adjoining fractures. After that, the combined effect of in situ stress ratio and fracturing spacing on the multi-fracture height growth is presented, and the results elucidate the influence of in situ stress ratio on the height growth behavior depending on the fracture spacing. Finally, it is found that the inclusion of soft layers changes the aperture distribution of outmost and interior hydraulic fractures. The results obtained from this study may provide some insights on the understanding of hydraulic fracture height containment observed in filed.

With the ever-increasing scale of power systems, stability analysis and control usually bear heavy storage and massive calculation burdens. In view of this, the model order reduction technique proves valuable by constructing a low-dimensional approximate model of the original system, which is crucial for efficiently handling large-scale systems. Balanced truncation (BT), a famous model reduction method, confronts practical limitations as it requires the systems to be stable and cannot deal with unstable models. Therefore, a parallel linear balanced truncation method for power systems based on extended Krylov subspace (EKS) is proposed in this work. Besides extending the BT method to unstable systems by α-shift, the key contribution also lies in strategies to enhance the convergence of the EKS method, whereupon the algorithm improvements include effective and efficient techniques for solving dual Lyapunov equations, and parallel acceleration of the singular value decomposition. The results of the simulation case verify that the proposed method can effectively improve the convergence of the EKS method by increasing α-shift, and the improvement work in this paper reduces the total time consumption of the BT method by about 26 %–33 % of the original, exhibiting better calculation efficiency. In addition, the case studies show that the simplified model still retains the time-domain and frequency-domain response characteristics of the original high-dimensional model.

With the growing usage of renewable energy technologies like wind power and photovoltaics, and the increased integration of FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System) devices into the power system, the transient characteristics of the evolving power system undergo changes that require appropriate analysis methods. As a new type of FACTS device, TCPST (Thyristor Controlled Phase Shifting Transformer) is introduced to facilitate the superior operation of renewable energy sources by controlling the power flow of access branches. From the perspective of branches, the dynamic characteristics of renewable energy sources and TCPST might be uniformly studied and simply calculated in the transient stability analysis. Therefore, the paper proposes a transient stability analysis method for wind power systems with TCPST based on the branch potential energy index. First, considering the variation characteristics of branch potential energy, this paper employed the stability index to analyze the transient stability of branches and the system by finding vulnerable lines. Then, based on the stability index, the paper investigates the influence of wind turbine removal, the installation and control parameter adjustment of TCPST on the transient stability of wind power systems. The simulation results in PSAT demonstrate that the removal of a proper amount of wind turbine post-fault and the installation of TCPST can improve the transient stability of the wind power system. Furthermore, it can also be improved by reasonably adjusting the TCPST control parameters. All simulation results are verified by the time domain simulation method.

Abstract This research proposed the modular prefabricated permanent formwork system made of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Two kinds of modular formwork shapes were designed: the flat formwork and the ribbed. The experimental investigation on the axial compression performance of the composite columns that consist of the normal strength concrete (NSC) core and the modular UHPC permanent formwork was demonstrated. Compared with the flat formwork, the ribbed formwork exhibited better bonding with the NSC core. As observed from the test results, the composite column with the ribbed formwork presented a similar axial behavior as the NSC column with a slight improvement in ultimate loads. Therefore, the modular UHPC ribbed permanent formwork could be regarded as the additional cover to the conventional NSC column. In addition, the finite element analysis (FEA) model was also developed to simulate the composite columns numerically. The predicted capacities agreed with the experimental results, which validated the numerical models. The crack pattern estimated by the FEA model revealed that the interaction between the permanent formwork and the inner concrete introduced many tiny cracks to the concrete core. However, as protected by the UHPC permanent formwork, the overall durability of the composite columns can still be enhanced.

In order to seal the joints between the ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) permanent formworks, the high strength cementitious grout (HSCG) was investigated in the presented work. The water reducer content and the water to binding materials (W/B) ratio of the grout were modified to meet the grout fluidity requirement, and then the effects of three commonly used admixtures (i.e., hydrophobic powders (HP), expansive agents (EA), and redispersible polymer powders (RPP)) and PVA fibers on the compressive, tensile, flexural, and adhesive strengths of the HSCG were investigated. In addition to the normal condition, the adhesive strengths under the soaked condition and the thermal aging condition were also evaluated. The HP worsen all strength index, especially the adhesive strength, while the appropriate utilization of the EA could improve all strength indexes by more than 12%. With the addition of RPP, the adhesive strengths under the soaked and thermal aging conditions could be significantly enhanced by over 85%. The PVA fiber could also enhance the normal adhesive strength by 20.5%. Based on the experimental results, the recommended contents of the EA, RPP, and PVA fibers were 6%, 2%, and 0.3%, respectively, while the HP was not suggested for the HSCG due to its adverse effect on the mechanical performances.

The NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is an essential component of the human innate immune system, and is closely associated with adaptive immunity. In most cases, the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome requires priming and activating, which are influenced by various ion flux signals and regulated by various enzymes. Aberrant functions of intracellular NLRP3 inflammasomes promote the occurrence and development of autoimmune diseases, with the majority of studies currently focused on rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis. In recent years, a number of bioactive substances have shown new potentiality for regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome in autoimmune diseases. This review provides a concise overview of the composition, functions, and regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Additionally, we focus on the newly discovered bioactive substances for regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome in autoimmune diseases in the past three years.

Compared to more complex structures, simply configured reinforced concrete column–steel beam (RCS) composite structures have more promising application prospects, especially in regions with moderate–high seismic levels, due to their ease of construction. However, the current understanding of the seismic performance of simplified RCS joints is not sufficient. Validated by experimental results, a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed in this study to reveal the seismic behavior of simplified RCS joints. Six vital design parameters, namely axial load ratio, concrete strength, yield strengths of steel webs and flanges, and diameters of transverse and longitudinal reinforcements, were comprehensively studied. Research has shown that the axial compression ratio has a significant impact on the failure mode and bearing capacity of joints. When the concrete strength increases, the load-bearing capacity of the joints significantly increases, while the brittleness of high-strength concrete leads to a decrease in its deformation capacity. In addition, when the steel beam strength is constant, higher flange and web yield strengths have a limited influence on crack propagation and strain development. The stirrup reinforcement ratio and longitudinal reinforcement ratio play a significant role in inhibiting crack propagation and improving the bearing capacity, respectively. With the help of the numerical results, six theoretical models introduced by national codes and other researchers were compared. Among them, the modified model proposed by Kanno demonstrated the highest accuracy and was the most suitable for simply configured RCS joints.

The utilization of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) permanent formwork could facilitate the construction of hydraulic concrete structures. However, the joints between UHPC formwork are the vulnerable parts of a whole permanent formwork system. This study aimed to develop a High Strength Cementitious Grout (HSCG) for filling these joints, integrating the formwork system, and minimizing the adverse influence on these joints. The aggregate size for the HSCG was optimized, and four kinds of admixtures (i.e., hydrophobic powder (HP), expansive agent (EA), redispersible polymer powder (RPP), and cellulose ether (CE)) and PVA fibers were used to improve the HSCG. The HSCG with different aggregate sizes, admixture dosages, and PVA fiber contents were experimentally investigated. By evaluating the compressive, tensile, flexural, and adhesive strengths of the prepared grout, the aggregate size range was recommended to be 0.15–0.30 ​mm, while the suggested contents of HP, EA, RPP, and CE were 0%, 6%, 2%, and 0.1%, respectively, by weight of binding materials. In addition, the optimal volume content of PVA fibers was 0.45%. In order to avoid the introduced foams, 0.2% of the defoamers were used in combination with the CE. After that, six combinations were tested to consider the coupled effect of different admixtures and PVA fibers on the HSCG. In consideration of the strengths, shrinkage, and abrasion resistance to water impact, the HSCG with the combination of (EA ​+ ​RPP ​+ ​CE), the aggregate size of 0.15–0.30 ​mm showed the optimal overall performance and was regarded as the most suitable HSCG for grouting.

Abstract Describing the material flow stress and the associated uncertainty is essential for the plastic stochastic structural analysis. In this context, a data-driven approach-heteroscedastic sparse Gaussian process regression (HSGPR) with enhanced efficiency is introduced to model the material flow stress. Different from other machine learning approaches, e.g. artificial neural network (ANN), which only estimate the deterministic flow stress, the HSGPR model can capture the flow stress and its uncertainty simultaneously from the dataset. For validating the proposed model, the experimental data of the Al 6061 alloy is used here. Without setting a priori assumption on the mathematical expression, the proposed HSGPR-based flow stress model can produce a better prediction of the experimental stress data than the ANN model, the conventional GPR model, and Johnson Cook model at elevated temperatures. After the HSGPR-based flow stress model is implemented into finite element analysis, two numerical examples with synthetic material properties are performed to demonstrate the model’s capability in stochastic plastic structural analysis. The results have shown that with sufficient data, the distribution of the structural load carrying capacity at elevated temperatures and the variation of load–displacement curves during the loading and unloading processes can be accurately predicted by the HSGPR-based flow stress model.

Highlights CRFA is used for preparing the lightweight concrete partition panels. The optimal ratio of the CRFA to the cement is 2.2 for the lightweight concrete. CRFA lightweight concrete needs to be cured for at least 10 days. The cost of lightweight concrete is reduced by 40% by using CRFA.

The undesirable properties of conventional recycled fine aggregate (RFA) often limit its application in the construction industry. To overcome this challenge, a method for preparing completely recycled fine aggregate (CRFA), which crushes all concrete waste only into fine aggregate, was proposed. The obtained CRFA had high apparent density, and its water absorption was lower than that of the conventional RFA. To take advantage of the CRFA, this paper introduced the modified packing density method for the CRFA concrete mix design. The modified packing density method took account of the powder with a particle size of smaller than 75 μm in the CRFA and balanced both the void ratio and the specific surface area of the aggregate system. Concrete (grade C55) was prepared using the CRFA to validate the feasibility of the proposed method. The unit price of the prepared CRFA concrete was around 12.7% lower than that of the natural aggregate concrete. Additionally, the proposed procedure for the concrete mixture design could recycle all concrete waste into the new concrete and replace all the natural fine aggregate in the concrete mixture.
