Urological tumors are an important disease affecting global human health, and their pathogenesis and treatment have been the focus of medical research. With the in - depth study of microbiomics, the role of the microbiome in urological tumors has gradually attracted attention. However, the current research on tumor - associated microorganisms mostly focuses on one type or one site, and currently, there is a lack of attention to the microbiome in the immunity and immunotherapy of urological tumors. Therefore, in this paper, we systematically review the distribution characteristics of the microbiome (including microorganisms in the gut, urine, and tumor tissues) in urologic tumors, the relationship with disease prognosis, and the potential mechanisms of microbial roles in immunotherapy. In particular, we focus on the molecular mechanisms by which the microbiome at different sites influences tumor immunity through multiple “messengers” and pathways. We aim to further deepen the understanding of microbiome mechanisms in urologic tumors, and also point out the direction for the future development of immunotherapy for urologic tumors.

In recent years, the role of gut microbiota (GM) in bladder cancer has attracted significant attention. Research indicates that GM not only contributes to bladder carcinogenesis but also influences the efficacy of adjuvant therapies for bladder cancer. Despite this, interventions targeting GM have not been widely employed in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, mainly due to the incomplete understanding of the complex interactions between the host and gut flora. Simultaneously, aberrantly expressed non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been frequently associated with bladder cancer, playing crucial roles in processes such as cell proliferation, invasion, and drug resistance. It is widely known that the regulation of GM-mediated host pathophysiological processes is partly regulated through epigenetic pathways. At the same time, ncRNAs are increasingly regarded as GM signaling molecules involved in GM-mediated epigenetic regulation. Accordingly, this review analyzes the ncRNAs that are closely related to the GM in the context of bladder cancer occurrence and treatment, and summarizes the role of their interaction with the GM in bladder cancer-related phenotypes. The aim is to delineate a regulatory network between GM and ncRNAs and provide a new perspective for the study and prevention of bladder cancer.

Objective: To explore the combined uses of central vein isolation-based laparoscopic technique and tubeless cardiovascular interventional technique (CVIT) in laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Methods: 31 subject patients with adrenal tumors were recruited and treated from January 2020 to November 2021. Regarding tumor size, the average transverse diameter of the adrenal tumor was (2.2 ± 1.0) cm and the average longitudinal diameter of the tumor was (3.1 ± 1.5) cm, respectively. All subject patients were operated on through the abdominal approach. The ''central vein isolation'' based laparoscopic technique was adopted to complete the operation. No drainage tube was placed in the patients. For this study, selected performance parameters, including the operation time, intraoperative bleeding, postoperative hospital stays, and postoperative complications were recorded and analyzed. Results: All the tumors were removed laparoscopically without any conversion to open surgery. All 31 recruited subjects were treated successfully with preservation of adrenocortical function. The mean operation time was 30 min (range from 25 to 63 min); the mean amount of intraoperative bleeding was approximately 3 mL (ranges from 0 to 10 mL); the mean postoperative hospital stay was 3 days (range from 2 to 6 days). Of note, no complications were recorded, such as adjacent organ injury, large vessel injury, infection, and secondary bleeding that occurred during and after the operation. Conclusion: The combined use of central-vein isolation laparoscopic technique and tubeless treatment ensures a facile, safe, and robust laparoscopic adrenalectomy operation in clinical practice.

Abstract Prostate cancer remains the second‐most common cancer diagnosed in men, despite the increasingly widespread use of serum prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) screening. The controversial clinical implications and cost benefits of PSA screening have been highlighted due to its poor specificity, resulting in a high rate of overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Thus, the development of novel biomarkers for prostate cancer detection remains an intriguing challenge. Urine is emerging as a source for prostate cancer biomarker discovery. Currently, new urine biomarkers already outperform serum PSA in clinical diagnosis. Meanwhile, the advances in nanotechnology have provided a suite of diagnostic tools to study prostate cancer in more detail, sparking a new era of biomarker discoveries. In this review, we envision that future prostate cancer diagnosis will probably integrate multiplex nano‐diagnostic approaches to detect novel urinary biomarkers. However, challenges remain in differentiating indolent from aggressive cancers to better inform treatment decisions, and clinical translation still needs to be overcome.

Riparian zones play a critical role in ecosystems. Accurately extracting the area of a riparian zone in open water is challenging due to human activities and climate change. This study used Sentinel-1 satellite data to investigate the capabilities of the support vector machine, extreme gradient boosting, and random forest methods, which were optimized by genetic algorithms for the detection of area changes in the riparian zone in the heart region of the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China. A total of 29 images were collected in 2020, and three models were created for each image, which were then transferred to other phases. The models’ performance metrics were validated using all of the images. The results indicated that the SVM method achieved the best performance with an accuracy of 0.945, an F1_Score of 0.950, and a kappa coefficient of 0.889. The optimal model was then used to monitor the area changes in the riparian zone over the study area in 2020. It was calculated that the area of the riparian zones was the smallest on 26 December and the largest on 17 June, with a maximum riparian zone of 31.97 km2. Overall, this study demonstrates that an SVM is the most stable method for detecting area changes in a riparian zone when using Sentinel-1 data compared to the RF and XGB methods. The findings are anticipated to provide a feasible plan for detecting the area dynamics in open-water riparian zones and to provide valuable information for the rational utilization of land resources and the ecological safety of the riparian zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir.

With increasing consumer awareness of the use of natural products in pharmaceuticals and medicine, it is noted that algae can be considered an appropriate source. Algae produce many bioactive components, which have application potential in pharmaceutical industries, such as fatty acids, phycobiliprotein, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and so on. However, it is still a long way before the truly widespread application of algae in medicine, and some research and technical bottlenecks still need to be resolved for further practical use. Here, we provide an in-depth review of the current understanding of algal-based medical application, with a focus on the main pharmaceutical activity and current application stage including in vitro, animal, and clinical studies. Furthermore, we propose some possible solutions to the obstacles that should be overcome for achieving the practical applications of algal-based medicine. Notably, animal and clinical studies on algal drugs and treatments should continue to push forward and expand for promoting the practical applications. Moreover, the developments in interdisciplinary research of algal biology and other disciplines provide new insight for driving algae-based medical application.

We have studied the electronic structures and magnetic properties of Fe-doped AlN by first-principles calculations within density functional theory. The calculated results show that AlN crystals doped by double Fe atoms display ferromagnetic properties, and the total magnetic moment is 10.0 µB per 72-atom supercell (3 × 3 × 2). The calculated energy differences between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases are 207 meV, which means FM state is a stable state. It is also found that the 3d-states of Fe dopants and the 2p-states of N atoms bonding to Fe dopants are the main contributors to the density of states at the Fermi level.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.22.4.10750

The mouse model has been widely employed to explore the mysteries of myopia. For now, existing techniques for induction of experimental myopia in mice can be classified into three types: (1) devices directly glued to the fur; (2) devices attached using a combination of glue and sutures; (3) devices attached using a skull-mounted apparatus. These techniques each have its advantages, disadvantages when considering the devices stability, safety, complexity, effectiveness, and so forth. Thus, techniques for myopia induction in mice have yet to be further refined to popularize the applications. In this pilot study, we introduce a new head fixation device named the head-mounted spectacle frame apparatus for the study of mouse lens-induced myopia. Surgical procedures for device attachment were relatively simple and easy to learn in our study. Effective myopia induction was validated by retinoscopy refraction and axial length measurement using optical coherence tomography. In addition, it showed improved compliance and reliable safety when compared to the published methods. The head-mounted spectacle frame apparatus provides a new choice for the study of lens-induced myopia in mouse. It also allows for the use of form deprivation, making it attractive for future experimental mouse myopia trials.

NaCl based solutions were applied as osmotic stress agents to alter the hydration state of the mouse eye. Full-eye responses to these osmotic challenges were monitored in vivo using a custom-built optical coherence tomography (OCT) with an extended imaging range of 12.38 mm. Dynamic changes in the mouse eye were quantified based on the OCT images using several parameters, including the central corneal thickness (CCT), the anterior chamber depth (ACD), the crystalline lens thickness (LT), the cornea-retina distance (CRD), the iris curvature (IC), and the lens scattering intensity (LSI). Apparent but reversible changes in the morphology of almost all the ocular components and the light transparency of the lens are exhibited. Particularly, the ocular dehydration induced by the hypertonic challenges resulted in a closing of the iridocorneal angle and an opacification of the lens. Our results indicated that the ocular hydration is an important physiological process which might be correlated with various ocular disorders, such as dry eye, cataract, and angle-closure glaucoma, and would affect the biometry and imaging of the eye. OCT uniquely enables the comprehensive study of the dynamic full-eye responses to the ocular hydration in vivo.
