Abstract

Data collection in an IoT environment requires simple and effective communication solutions to address resource constraints, ensure network efficiency, while achieving scalability. Efficiency is evaluated based on the timeliness of collected data (Age of Information), the energy spent per delivered unit of data, and the effectiveness in utilizing spectrum resources. This paper addresses a random multiple access adaptive system, in which a large number of devices send sporadic messages in non-periodic pattern. In particular, our analysis highlights the potential of Successive Interference Cancellation and identifies an adaptive parameter setting to maximize its benefits as the level of contention on the shared channel varies. An analytical model is defined, easily scalable with the number of nodes and yielding all the relevant metrics. Evidence of the accuracy of the model is given by comparing predicted results against simulations. The model is utilized to assess the trade-off between Age of Information and energy consumption, revealing a sharp relationship between the two. 2. Asymptotic analysis of sum-rate under SIC

Abstract

Limitation of the cost of coordination and contention among a large number of nodes calls for grant-free approaches, exploiting physical layer techniques to solve collisions. Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) is becoming a key building block of multiple access channel receiver, in an effort to support massive Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we explore the large-scale performance of SIC in a theoretical framework. A general model of a SIC receiver is stated for a shared channel with $n$ transmitters. The asymptotic sum-rate performance is characterized as $n \rightarrow \infty$, for a suitably scaled target Signal to Noise Interference Ratio (SNIR). The probability distribution of the number of correctly decoded packets is shown to tend to a deterministic distribution asymptotically for large values of $n$. The asymptotic analysis is carried out for any probability distribution of the wireless channel gain, assuming that the average received power level is same for all nodes, through power control.

7. Optimal Back-Off Distribution for Maximum Weighted Throughput in CSMA

Abstract

We consider a generalized version of Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), where the contention window size is a constant and the back-off probability distribution can be varied. We address the optimization of a weighted throughput metric, identifying the optimal back-off Probability Density Function (PDF). We give a simple fixed-point algorithm to compute the optimal PDF and prove that the solution is unique. The weighted throughput definition caters for aspects other than the mere channel utilization. It reduces to plain utilization (normalized throughput) when all weights are equal to 1. We also reconnect our result to the classic analysis of saturated non-persistent CSMA, as introduced in the seminal paper by Tobagi and Kleinrock, proving formally that the modeling assumptions of that work, that lead to a Geometric PDF of back-off, actually correspond to the throughput-optimal choice, provided that the ratio of the Geometric PDF is suitably chosen.

8. The role of SIC on the design of next generation multiple access.

Abstract

The interplay of physical layer enhancements and classic random access protocols is the objective of this paper. Successive interference cancellation (SIC) is among the major enhancements of the physical layer. Considering the classic representatives of random access protocols, Slotted ALOHA and Channel Sensing Multiple Access (CSMA), we show that two regimes can be identified as a function of the communication link spectral efficiency. In case of high levels of spectral efficiency, multi-packet reception enabled by SIC is of limited benefit. Sum-rate performance is dominated by the effectiveness of the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. On the contrary, for low spectral efficiency levels, sum-rate performance is essentially dependent on physical layer SIC capability, while the MAC protocol has a marginal impact. Limitations due to transmission power dynamic range are shown to induce unfairness among nodes. However, the unfairness issue fades away when the system is driven to work around the sum-rate peak achieved for low spectral efficiency. This can also be confirmed by looking at Age of Information (AoI) metric. The major finding of this work is that SIC can boost performance, while still maintaining a fair sharing of the communication channel among nodes. In this regime, the MAC protocol appears to play a marginal role, while multi-packet reception endowed by SIC is prominent to provide high sum-rate, low energy consumption, and low AoI. 40. Age of Information in CSMA-based Networks with Bursty Update Traffic

Abstract

Exchanging status information between closely located mobile agents is an underlying process in numerous future Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). Real-time updates including positions of neighboring nodes is performed when, for example, autonomous vehicles execute a cooperative maneuver, industrial robots collaborate with each other on a task, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) execute a mission in a swarm. For the design of networked automatic control strategies in these scenarios, it is essential to understand the performance of such Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications from the information freshness perspective. To this end, we introduce a mathematical framework which allows characterizing the Age of Information (AoI) in networks governed by the Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) protocol. Differently from existing work, we take into account the fact that update packets sent by mobile nodes are not necessarily periodic, since packet triggering is often coupled with agents’ mobility. Our approach is based on the assumption that diverse mobility-triggered message generation patterns can be modeled by a wide class of update traffic arrival processes. We apply Discrete Markovian Arrival Process (DMAP), which is a versatile arrival model able to fit arrival patterns that are modulated by a finite state machine, including bursty traffic. We develop an accurate and efficient analytical model of nodes exchanging one-hop broadcast update messages with bursty arrivals to evaluate the moments as well as entire probability distribution of several performance metrics, including AoI. An asymptotic analysis for large networks suggests a simple way to control the update message rate to minimize the AoI. We show that the optimal update rate that minimizes the mean AoI coincides with the optimum of the wireless channel utilization. Numerical examples point out that the asymptotic theory provides accurate predictions also for small values of the number of nodes. © 2013

Abstract

A fundamental paradigm of the Internet of Things (IoT) consists of agents that communicate updates to each other to perform joint actions, e.g., cooperative awareness in transportation systems, swarms of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), fleet of robots, automated assembly lines and logistics. A common feature of update messaging is emphasis on reliable throughput and freshness of collected data. We develop an analytical model that yields accurate predictions of all relevant metrics, both in terms of moments and probability distributions, for the case of one-hop broadcast update messages exchanged by using a CSMA-based wireless network. The model is validated against simulations and then applied to compare two update message scheduling approaches: providing a minimal buffer resource or providing no buffer. Surprisingly, we prove that having no buffer improves Age of Information (AoI) performance as well as message delivery rate, in spite of dropped packets. This is essentially due to much smaller congestion and hence collision probability in the wireless channel. From a system point of view this suggests a simple design of message handling, with no need of buffering and overwriting older messages. From a modeling point of view, the result supports the definition of simpler models that need not keep into account buffer state.

Abstract

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication is essential for facilitating connected and automated driving, where vehicles and other road traffic participants share data instantaneously and cooperate to solve tricky traffic situations in milliseconds. This paper proposes two stochastic models for the V2X standard IEEE 802.11p to characterize amongst other things the Age of Information (AoI), a recently-proposed metric that measures the freshness of information. The first model is based on renewal process analysis of a tagged station with mean field approximation, while the second one adopts Markov chain approach with network level view. Analytical results show that IEEE 802.11p, given its adaptability to event-triggered and aperiodic messaging, supports advanced cooperative driving scenarios.

Abstract

Vehicular networking enables a wide range of emerging Cooperative Intelligent Transportation System (C-ITS) applications, from safety to traffic efficiency and infotainment. Many of these applications depend on the reliability and timeliness of status information periodically exchanged among vehicles on the same wireless communication channel. A major effort has been spent, especially by standardization bodies, to define congestion control algorithms for the vehicular networking environment. The picture is, however, more complex than simply controlling the load level on the channel, given the non-trivial interplay of delivery reliability, system throughput, and timeliness of updates. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive performance evaluation of the main state-of- the-art broadcast rate control algorithms from the point of view of channel load, utilization efficiency, and information freshness. We evaluate these algorithms in a realistic simulation environment and describe a centralized approach to define a bound on the performance. We show that controlling the congestion based on either channel load or information freshness only leads to sub-optimal performance.

Abstract

We consider a network of agents that send periodic updates to their neighbors. A trade-off between load on the shared communication channel and data timeliness is obtained by looking at the Age of Information (AoI) metric. We develop a model of a Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) network with partial sensing, to calculate the AoI of one-hop broadcast messages exchanged among the agents. The model is applied to beacon messages in a vehicular network to gain insight into the impact of system parameters.
