14. Swirling spray flames dynamical blow-out induced by transverse acoustic oscillations

Abstract

Recent experiments on a laboratory scale annular system comprising multiple injectors (namely, MICCA-Spray) indicate that combustion instabilities coupled with azimuthal modes may induce large amplitude oscillations, which under certain conditions, lead to blow-out of some of the flames established in the system, a phenomenon designated as dynamic blow-out (DBO). An attempt is made in the present investigation to reproduce this phenomenon in a linear array of injectors (namely, TACC-Spray), where the sound field is externally applied to flames established by injector units that are identical to those used in the annular combustor. The sound field is generated by driver units placed on the lateral sides of a rectangular cavity. The pressure level induced in TACC-Spray can reach a peak value of 1700 Pa in a frequency range extending from 680 to 780 Hz, which corresponds to the typical frequency of azimuthal instabilities observed in the annular system. A theoretical model based on dimensional analysis serves to guide the choice of operating conditions that may lead to the DBO phenomenon. Experiments carried out in TACC-Spray and MICCA-Spray are then used to determine the DBO boundary, define the conditions that need to be fulfilled to observe this phenomenon, and gather high-speed visualizations providing some insights on the mechanisms that induce blow-out.

International audience; The present work focuses on non linear acoustic effects on an elliptic cylinder or an ellipsoid. These effects are encountered in acoustic levitation, ultrasonic standing wave atomization or two-phase flow combustion instabili-ties. Theoretical approaches mainly paid attention on the total radiation force, but a modeling of the distribution of acoustic radiation pressure around the object is needed to predict liquid object deformation. In the present study, a semi-analytical model is presented in order to compute the local radiation pressure as the only reason for liquid jet or droplet deformation. The method used here imposes an incident field to, a posteriori, compute the scattered field as a function of the object geometrical properties. A partial wave decomposition(PWD) model is developed to express incident and scattered fields by and immovable object with rigid boundary conditions. Radiation pressure is computed for progressive and standing wave fields. Validation of our method is done by comparing with the radiation force results from the literature. Results show that the larger the deformation, the higher the acoustic effects in a direction perpendicular to the acoustic wave axis. Introduction Non linear effects of acoustics are encountered in applications such as acoustic levitation, ultrasonic standing wave atomization or two-phase flow combustion instabilities occurring in rocket engines [1-4]. Most of the studies dealing with interaction of acoustics and spherical [5-9] or cylindrical [10-14] objects focused on the stationary radiation force. The main objective was there to determine the displacement of these objects. However, their deformation is also of a great interest in applications dealing with liquid objects. In studies on acoustically levitating droplets, some authors considered the radiation pressure distribution as the source of the stationnary deformation of the free surfaces [2, 15, 16]. They showed that spherical droplets became oblate when exposed to the radiation pressure. For cylindrical objects, it was experimentally proven that cylindrical liquid jets subjected to a low frequency standing wave were susceptible to be deformed into elliptic cylinders [17]. Thus, by relying on those results it appeared that knowing radiation pressure distribution around elliptic objects was necessary to correctly analyze the interaction between acoustics and deformed objects. Hasheminejad et al. [18, 19] developed an approach based on elliptic functions, namely Mathieu functions, to describe the acoustic scattered field. This is a powerful method, but limited in its applications due to the occurrence of Mathieu polynomials instability. Other authors considered a theoretical approach based on the expression of the incident and scattered waves by means of the formal cylindrical or spherical functions [17, 20-22]. All the studies cited above focused only on the modeling of the radiation force computed with the far field assumption avoiding the computation of radiation pressure distribution. To tackle the problem of object deformation induced by acoustics, it is needed to model the radiation pressure distribution. This is done here for elliptic cylinders and ellipsoids. The two-way coupling between incident acoustic harmonic plane waves and these objects is explored by computing the radiation pressure field and resulting radiation force. In the first section is presented the method used to compute the acoustic velocity potential field scattered by elliptic objects and the consequent computation of the radiation pressure and radiation force. Results showing the convergence of the method, its validation and the radiation pressure distribution are presented in the second section. Finally, the last section is dedicated to some conclusions.

Les réponses du brûleur et de l'enceinte sont mesurées par microphone. La dynamique de flamme est analysée par caméra rapide intensifiée et photomultiplicateur calé sur l'émission CH* reliée au taux de dégagement de chaleur. L'écoulement est quantifié par Anémométrie Doppler Laser et visualisations tomographiques rapides. On montre que le jet de réactants répond suivant un mode longitudinal à la fréquence imposée f0 tandis que la flamme peut répondre à f0/2.

Une transition de jet vers le chaos et sa résonance sont révélées aux hautes fréquences. L’unification de la réponse de flamme est obtenue aux moyennes fréquences.

Abstract

Abstract: Air-side dilution on laminar methane/air diffusion flames in the buoyant regime was extensively studied. CO2, important for EGR and fire safety, was chosen as a diluent. It was complemented by N2 and Ar. Flame stability, its external aspect and inner structure were quantified by complementary experiments and simulations. Two flame-response categories were highlighted, depending on whether mechanisms relied on several effects or mainly on pure dilution. In the former case, physico-chemical properties of diluents were essential. The greatest influence was detected with CO2, the least one with Ar. No critical value of the initial molar O2-concentration () was found to control quantities involved in stability (lifting limit, standoff distance of the attached flame), soot formation and flame-tip opening. It was found a critical flow-rate ratio from which flame-liftoff always occurred, crucial to describe lifting process induced by dilution. The reaction, naturally weak at the flame tip, led to an apparent open-tip with diluents. However, simulation showed the reaction, even weakened, persisted. On the contrary, pure dilution controlled flame length behavior. When was decreased, length increased according to a unique evolution whatever the diluents. To measure flame length, several techniques were applied: OH Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (L f,OH), soot-Laser Induced Incandescence (L f,LII), direct flame emission (L f,luminous and L f,peak). Length L f,luminous was unable to correctly characterize flame lengthening. L f,peak was the closest to the calculated stoichiometric length. So, the method giving L f,peak appeared as the easiest and the most accurate one. Comparison between our data and correlations found in literature indicated Roper’s correlation was the most efficient to predict length evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The authors focused on how adding CO2 to the air influences the transition from an attached flame to a lifted flame issued from a coaxial nonpremixed methane-air jet. To discriminate between effects due to a diluent (dilution, thermal, or chemical impacts), chemically and thermally inert N2 and chemically inert Ar were also investigated. Flame lifting always occurs, essentially controlled by the critical flow-rate ratio, (Qdiluent/Qair)lifting. CO2 has the strongest ability to break flame stability, followed by N2, then by Ar. A unique attachment height and OH thickness characterize lifting for all the diluents; lifting is attained once the same critical flame edge propagation speed is reached. (Qdiluent/Qair)/(Qdiluent/Qair)lifting is the affine parameter of similarity laws describing Ha and EpOH evolutions with dilution. Aerodynamics competes with dilution to impose lifting and boundary effects cannot be ignored in a fine analysis. Abstract

The interaction between non-premixed lifted flames and the free jet structures is of paramount importance in the stabilization of combustion processes. So, by organizing or disorganizing the jet structures, acoustics must also act on flames by its ability either to amplify the flames' intrinsic drawbacks, or to change and improve the combustion regime. An earlier systematic study, carried out by the authors, concerns the responses of a non-premixed flame, lifted in its hysteresis zone, to sine-shaped forcing in a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes, under fixed conditions of burner diameter and flow rate. The present work is aimed at verifying the robustness of the physical mechanisms involved over a wider range of conditions. These conditions are chosen in a range of moderate Reynolds numbers (3000-6000) so that the flame stabilizes in the hysteresis zone. The influence of imposed oscillations on the flame is summarized in charts as a function of the forcing frequency and the fluctuation amplitude. Results show that the phenomena presented previously are still observed, but shifts of the response domain limits are noticed. Some objective global criteria are proposed to explain these shifts. A particular behavior (the "split-flame" described by Hertzberg et al.) is only observed for the case of small diameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The notion of interface is extended here to domains which present strong normal gradients along a thickness larger than the molecular scale, but small enough in comparison with a macroscopic scale, significant to the interface surrounding. Some balance equations, describing the evolution of the surface proprieties are established. To directly solve the system with the surface variables, it is necessary to find some complementary constitutive equations, closing this one. Two ways are proposed: the first one is a transposition of some equations of state and relations, applied usually to volume variables, to surface ones. The second one is a direct research of some constitutive relations by a dimension analysis., La notion d'interface est ici étendue à des milieux présentant des gradients normaux sur une épaisseur plus importante que l'échelle moléculaire, mais restant petite devant une échelle macroscopique significative de l'environnement interfacial. Des équations du bilan décrivant l'évolution des propriétés de surface sont établies, Il est nécessaire de trouver des lois de comportement complémentaires permettant de le fermer. Deux approches sont proposées : la première transpose les lois d'état et les relations, appliquées habituellement aux variables de volume, à celles de surface ; l'autre est une recherche directe de lois par l'analyse dimensionnelle.

Abstract

International audience; Les flammes peuvent sous certaines conditions être assimilées à des interfaces. L'interface de combustion considérée ici est la surface d'une flamme mince de prémélange dont le mouvement est engendré par un champ de vitesse donné des gaz frais. Ce champ de vitesse provient de l'écoulement issu d'un brûleur au fond duquel est disposé un haut-parleur [1]. Le brûleur, de type Bunsen, muni d'un convergent, permet d'obtenir, en régime permanent, un profil de vitesse v0 quasi-uniforme dans le plan de sortie. En régime instationnaire, la composante verticale de la vitesse des gaz frais est fonction du temps et de la distance z comptée verticalement à partir de la sortie du brûleur : ()     z t f a v v z   + + = 0 0 2 sin 1 Les expériences effectuées avec un mélange air-méthane ont donné lieu à des mesures de vitesse et de forme de flamme, par vélocimétrie laser Doppler et par tomographie laser avec photographie et stroboscopie. La séquence présentée ici correspond à une fréquence f0 de 70,4 Hz [1]. La modélisation théorique non linéarisée [2] a été effectuée en admettant essentiellement que la vitesse normale locale de combustion était constante et égale à celle de la flamme plane stationnaire et adiabatique  sin 0 v v l =. La méthode des caractéristiques a été utilisée pour résoudre analytiquement le système d'équations où l'inconnue principale est le profil instationnaire de flamme.
