2. Artivism: A New Educative Language for Transformative Social Action

Abstract

This study describes the concepts, historical precedents, language and fundamental experiences of artivism. It shows the research activities from two main universities (Complutense de Madrid in Spain and Nottingham Trent in UK) as well as other cultural institutions (Élan Interculturel from France and Artemiszio from Hungary), which have explored the educational potential of artivism as a new way of achieving social engagement using innovation and artistic creation. The paper defines precisely artivism as a new language which appears outside the museums and art academies, moving towards urban and social spaces. Artivism is a hybrid form of art and activism which has a semantic mechanism to use art as a means towards change and social transformation. The analysis collects some central experiences of the artivist phenomenon and applies semantic analysis, archiving artivist experiences, and using urban walks and situational research, analyses the educational and formative potential of artivists and their ability to break the classroom walls, and to remove the traditional roles of creator and receptor, student and professor, through workshop experiences. Finally, it reflects upon the usefulness of artivism as a new social language and an educational tool that breaks the traditional roles of social communication.

En Guatemala no se ha revisado el entrenamiento del ejército durante el conflicto armado ni su relación con las violaciones a los derechos humanos, específicamente con las violaciones sexuales a mujeres. Por otra parte, en ello se ha tratado del sufrimiento de las mujeres, pero no de aquél experimentado por “el victimario”. En este artículo se analiza quiénes eran los perpetradores, qué formación recibieron y cómo se construyó la masculinidad dentro del ejército. Se analiza la creación de un sistema guatemalteco de represión capaz de permitir y ordenar acciones violentas, con un ejército en sintonía con normas y valores culturales, basados en el autoritarismo, el racismo, el clasismo y las relaciones de poder entre hombres y mujeres. In the case of Guatemala’s Armed Conflict, the relation between military training, human rights violations and women’s rape has not been studied. Studies have tended to explore women’s suffering experiences, rather than to analyse the one of the perpetrator. This article deals with the figure of the offender in order to know their profile and training and to understand the building of masculinity in the army. It analyses the creation of Guatemala’s repressive structures that allowed and authorized violent actions, and their relations with an army whose values were based on authoritarianism, racism, classism, and gender power relations. Au Guatemala, l’entraînement de l’armée pendant le conflit et les atteintes aux Droits de l’Homme, en particulier les viols contre les femmes, n’ont pas été étudiés. Par ailleurs, s’il a été question de la souffrance des femmes, celle du “bourreau” est demeurée à l’écart. Cet article se penche sur ceux qui ont perpétré ces crimes, sur leur formation et sur la construction de la masculinité au sein de l’armée. Il analyse la création d’un système guatémaltèque de répression capable de permettre et d’ordonner des actions violentes au cœur d’une armée en accord avec les normes et valeurs culturelles: l’autoritarisme, le racisme, les rapports de classes et les rapports de pouvoir entre hommes et femmes.

Abstract

Este estudio describe los conceptos, antecedentes, lenguaje y experiencias fundamentales del artivismo, a partir de las actividades de estudio en la Universidad de Nottingham Trent y en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, con la colaboración de otras entidades culturales como la francesa Élan Interculturel (Francia) y Artemiszio (Hungría), explorando la capacidad educativa de nuevas formas de compromiso social mediante la innovación y creación artística. El artículo acota y define el artivismo como un nuevo lenguaje que surge del desborde de la creación artística académica y museística, hacia los espacios y lugares sociales. El artivismo, hibridación del arte y del activismo, tiene un mecanismo semántico en el que se utiliza el arte como vía para comunicar una energía hacia el cambio y la transformación. El análisis recoge algunas de las principales experiencias en artivismo mediante diversas técnicas –estudio de ejemplos de artivismo mediante análisis semántico, realización de archivo de fenómenos artivistas siguiendo metodologías de paseos urbanos e investigación situacional, y estudio de la capacidad didáctica y formativa de los artivistas y sus trabajos por su facilidad para romper los muros de las aulas e invertir los roles de creador y espectador, alumno y profesor, mediante experiencias en talleres– para de esta manera reflexionar finalmente sobre la utilidad del artivismo como nuevo lenguaje social y como herramienta educativa, capaz de romper los roles tradicionales de la comunicación social., This study describes the concepts, historical precedents, language and fundamental experiences of artivism. Abstract

This article presents original user-based research concerning a Mexican European Diaspora's use of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) for making racial and classed distinctions through the course of sharing and viewing content on their networked profiles. Bourdieu's theoretical framework is used to address the ways in which SNSs usage fosters social capital, exclusion and displays of prejudice and discrimination. We also found useful the analysis of racial distinctions based on participants' references to physical attributes. To illustrate the use of racial and classed distinctions, we specifically consider the use of Facebook and also of A Small World (ASW), an exclusive SNS, regarded as one of few designed for use by 'the wealthy' [Ruiz, 2008. We analyse the term 'naco', a pejorative Mexican term commonly used to refer to vulgarity or inferiority amongst Mexican European and privileged diaspora with strong racial, classed and gendered connotations. The empirical material for this study is based on ethnographic research. Through the analysis of displayed images and text as well as well questionnaires and interviews we found tacit or explicit exclusion, discrimination and segregation through close-knit SNS networks engaged in by our participants, a Mexican privileged European diaspora. Abstract

Immigration may now be considered one of the most fraught political issues in Europe. Over the past 40 years, immigration from developing countries – and now from East Europe - has changed the face of Western Europe. The periphery has moved to the centre. This move has generated western’s response towards more draconian immigration policies coupled with more nationalist discourse in the public sphere, including the media. In the political culture of post-September 11, the question of ‘othering’ in terms of ethnic, national and/or religious identity assumes great significance in various parts of the world. The racialised ‘other’ as a designation given to non-westerns, to those at the ‘fringe’ of national as well as geopolitics, brings with it a constellation of meanings that are fundamental to the reinforcement of preferred discourses based on ‘difference’. In other words, contemporary forms of paranoid nationalism, working alongside discourses of ‘the war on terror’, often invoke the racialised ‘other’ in terms of religious and/or ethnic difference and its negative web of signification as threat, hostility and antagonism towards the ‘Other’. What these narratives fail to show is the life stories, the daily life of immigrants and diasporic. [...]

La diversidad de los procesos de reconfiguración de los espacios mediáticos en sus aspectos socioculturales y de producción de sentido han demandado grandes esfuerzos de investigación e interpretación en el campo de los estudios de los medios de comunicación en la última década, principalmente en las concepciones que articulan las transformaciones en las mediatizaciones con el surgimiento de nuevos medios de comunicación alternativos. La mediatización está en el centro de las interacciones de la vida cotidiana, organizando casi todos los aspectos de la existencia, desde el amplio mosaico de las instituciones sociales y de los sistemas culturales, hasta los encuentros más íntimos del cotidiano. En la actualidad, no podemos entender la sociedad en que vivimos sin entender el alcance de los procesos de transformación en la mediatización; la renegociación de significados; y los constantes cambios que surgen en las políticas de mediación. Este trabajo es un abordaje transversal a las investigaciones empíricas del campo mediático, asociando las transformaciones en la mediatización a percepciones diferenciadas en la discusión sobre el concepto de medios de comunicación alternativos The diverse processes of reconfiguration of the socio-economic aspects of media spaces and the production of meaning have demanded great research and interpretation efforts in media studies during the last decade. That is especially true in concepts that articulate the transformations that occur with new, alternative media. The use of media in social relationships is at the heart of our daily life, organizing almost all aspects of our existence, from the broad mosaic of social institutions and cultural systems to the most intimate meetings in our daily life. Currently, we can no longer understand the society we live in without understanding transformations in the way the new media are used in personal relations, new negotiations of meaning and the constant changes that develop in media policies. Abstract

Immigration may now be the most fraught political issue in Europe. In Britain, Follwoing 9/11, there has been a general move towards more draconian immigration policies with emphasis on nationalist discourse and dichotomy of 'us versus them'. This has found echo in sectors of the British print media rhetoric of reporting asylum seekers. The central argumetn of the paper is that the 'politics of naming', i.e. naming and shutting out the reality of the subalter 'Other - asylum seekers - is employed by British press by the dichotomy of 'us versus them'. The paper relies on the debates around media representation of the 'Other' and on post-colonial theory to analyse recent examples of the representation of asylum seekers in the British press. Abstract

This paper came out of my own experience as a 'foreigner' and my interest in finding out about the construct of a Latin American diasporic identity. The order of that experience could be translated into two points: first, on the issue of ethnic identity and diaspora, particularly in relation to the Latin American women, and second, on the role of the 'diasporic' media in shaping a transnational identity. This is not to suggest that the diasporic and mainstream media define identities but rather that they might play a part in creating communicative spaces of inclusion and belongingness or/and segregation. In this sense, mediation is a political process as mainstream media mostly define the representation of ethnic minorities' identities in the public sphere while diasporic media allow for resistance, appropriation, and counter representation as well as identity assertion. In fact, I argue that the role of the diasporic media is particularly important in mediating the experience of hybridity and migration of diasporic groups as it works as a third cultural space where diasporas are creating sites for representation and where different forms of resistance and syncretism are valued. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
