5. Bulk Osteochondral Allograft for a Firearm Injury to the Medial Femoral Condyle in a Military Service Member: A Case Report

Abstract

A 27-year-old U.S. military active duty male sustained an accidental, self-inflicted left knee gunshot injury with an unsalvageable medial femoral condyle injury. The patient underwent bulk osteochondral allograft transplantation. Nine months post-operation, the patient was fit for full military duties with no reported functional limitations and remained on active duty. Severe knee medial femoral condyle bone loss after accidental firearm injury is uncommon. Bulk knee osteochondral allograft transplantation to the medial femoral condyle provided a successful treatment option for an active duty U.S. military member with multicompartment osteochondral defects and severe medial femoral condyle bone loss due to a gunshot injury.

It discusses how institutional independence affects the enterprise, and addresses whether rubrics will be received as salvation or subservience by educational agents. It asks how rubrics can benefit stakeholders while examining their unintended consequences. It concludes by ringing a cautionary bell that the price of crossing the Rubric-con may be too steep.

Abstract

Scholarly impact is typically conceptualized and measured as an internal exchange that occurs among researchers in the form of citations in journal articles. We offer an expanded conceptualization and measurement of scholarly impact by investigating knowledge transfer to a critical management education constituency: students. To do so, we investigated which sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, business periodicals); individual items (e.g., journal articles, book chapters); and authors are most frequently cited in 38 widely used organizational behavior, human resource management, strategic management, and general management undergraduate-level textbooks. By extracting all endnotes and references, we created a database including 7,445 sources, 33,719 articles and book chapters, and 32,981 authors (and their affiliations) cited at least once. Results showed a weak relationship between journals, articles, and authors cited most frequently in journals and those most frequently cited in textbooks. We also found that students are exposed to knowledge and content originating both in academic and non-academic outlets. Results have implications for theory and practice regarding the science–practice gap and a consideration of students as stakeholders, the conceptualization and measurement of scholarly impact and the design of academic performance management and reward systems, and choices regarding what knowledge academics create and disseminate. 17. The Effects of Response Mode and Personal Relevance on Information Search Strategies.

Abstract

The difference between response modes of judgment versus choice has until recently gone largely unnoticed in the decision-making literature. Recent research suggests that judgment and choice are indeed not the same, and that the processes evoked by each differ radically. Using information search boards, this study followed the disclosure patterns of 52 undergraduate college students who were asked to either choose a hypothetical roommate, or make judgments on each roommate alternative. One-half of each group (choice and judgment) were randomly assigned to select either a roommate for themselves (personal relevance) or for a friend (non-personal relevance). Under non-personal relevance, the decision process for conditions of judgment versus choice was predicted to involve more information searched, less variability of the pattern of search, and greater use of interdimensional strategies. High relevance was predicted to attenuate these patterns. Analysis confirmed the predicted patterns for judgments as compared to choice. Unlike previous research, personal relevance yielded more intradimensional search patterns. (Author/ABL)

Abstract

Study results show that managers with high 'need for cognition' (NFC), in comparison to those with low NFC, tend to be more thorough when choosing among alternatives and to be less influenced by situational cues of choice. Moderate-NFC managers tend to be as thorough as high-NFC managers but, in terms of susceptibility to situational cues of choice, to fall between high- and low-NFC managers. Because the NFC variable measures dispositional motivation, these results suggest that decision strategy is influenced by individual motivation.
