1. Textures as Communication Symbols.

Abstract

Designed for teaching the related services staff, residential care providers, and families of individuals with severe hearing and vision impairments, this booklet explains the issues related to developing a communication system using textures. The texture symbols described are intended for use by individuals with dual sensory and multiple disabilities. The first section of the guide includes an overview of the sense of touch and the use of textures. It also provides guidelines for who should use textured symbols. The next section provides guidelines for choosing materials and activities. In addition, there is information on making textured symbols and display formats. The four phases of instruction are then outlined, including: (1) creating an association between a textured symbol and a referent; (2) teaching a requesting behavior; (3) practicing textured symbol use within functional activities; and (4) generalizing textured symbol use. Appendices include a list of the seven levels of communication, suggested textured materials, a list of textured making tools and materials, and an illustration of display formats. (CR)

2. Perspectives on Effective Education: A Guide to Including All Children.

Abstract

The goal of this booklet is to help teachers re-examine education for students with disabilities. It is intended to help clarify issues related to developing adaptive processes to include students with disabilities in general education classrooms. It begins by explaining the difference between mainstreaming, integration, and inclusion, how a general education teacher can be successful in including all children, and the role of a special education teacher in inclusive classrooms. Four basic principles are then outlined for including all children: (1) share responsibilities as a team; (2) meet on a regular basis; (3) develop priorities and plans; and (4) consider all ways of adapting activities to include children with disabilities. Appendices include a list of 28 resources on inclusive programming; information on goals, roles, and processes for helping individuals to work as a team; a meeting effectiveness checklist; strategies for including all students; and strategies for adapting curriculum. 3. Planning Today Creating Tomorrow: A Guide to Transition.

Abstract

This booklet provides information designed for individuals who are involved in the transition planning process both for persons with deaf-blindness and for persons with other disabilities. The purpose of the guide is to introduce common misperceptions encountered during transition planning, components of transition planning, and the transition planning process. The first section of the guide presents common misperceptions based on the collective experiences of educators who have participated in transition planning for students over the years. The following section identifies general considerations and common transition issues when beginning transition planning, including thinking about the person, exploring all options, learning to work as a team, and sharing responsibility among team members. A general step-by-step process to transition planning is then presented, along with examples of plans developed for two women with vision and hearing losses who returned home to Indiana after attending schools out of state. Appendices include resource information, checklists, the transition plan with a map with timelines for the two women, and a transition mobile with instructions. A glossary of common terms used during transition planning is included. (CR)

6. Using Visual Accents to Enhance Attending to Communication Symbols for Students with Severe Multiple Disabilities.

Visual accents can create unique communication graphics to increase attending behavior necessary for learning symbol/referent relationships by students with severe vision loss. 9. Nitrogen Fertilizer Showed Little Effect on First- and Second-Year Corn Yield and Quality Following Alfalfa

Abstract

Silage corn (Zea mays L.) following alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a common crop rotation in Utah and southern Idaho. This is done, in part, to take advantage of residual nitrogen (N) fixed by bacteria that work in symbiosis with the roots of alfalfa. After alfalfa is terminated, much of the N that was fixed by the plant is released into the soil and becomes available for use by the rotational crop. This reduces the amount of N fertilizer that growers need to apply. The Utah Fertilizer Guide currently recommends an N credit to a rotational crop following alfalfa of 112 kg N ha-1. On-farm experiments were conducted to test whether this credit is valid and to what extent residual N from a previous alfalfa crop benefits corn silage yield and quality in the first- and second-year corn following alfalfa. Four N rates were tested in this experiment (0, 56, 112, and 224 kg N ha-1). The data from 27 site-years of first-year corn showed that yield increased from 22.1 to 23.1 Mg ha-1 as the nitrogen application increased from 0 to 224 kg N ha-1. The economic optimum nitrogen rate (EONR) was lower than the currently accepted recommended rate on all 27 first-year sites. Nine site-years of second-year corn showed that yield also increased 19.8 to 21.8 Mg ha-1 as application rate went from 0 to 224 kg N ha-1. Eight of the nine sites had an EONR of 0 kg N ha-1. A better understanding of how residual nitrogen affects crop growth will improve nitrogen recommendations and reduce farm costs for rotational crops following alfalfa.

Abstract

A fluorescence microscope, based on standing wave excitation of fluorescence, effects an axial resolution greater than 0.5 micrometer. Standing wave excitation technique involves the generation of standing waves due to interference in laser rays which, in turn, gives rise to an excitation field. Compactly packed nodes and antinodes characterize such an excitation field and facilitate optical scanning of the specimen at an enhanced resolution. This technique is used in three-dimensional imaging of actin fibers and filaments in static cells, actin filaments and myosin II filaments in viable cells. Mathematical representation of standing wave excitation includes an axial shift of optical transfer function in reciprocal vector space, which facilitates retraction of reduced signals of information.
