1. Exoplanet imaging with ELTs: exploring a second-stage AO with a Zernike wavefront sensor on the ESO/GHOST testbed

Abstract

We propose to explore a cascade extreme Adaptive optics (ExAO) approach with a second stage based on a Zernike wavefront sensor (ZWFS) for exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy. Most exoplanet imagers currently use a single-stage ExAO to correct for the effects of atmospheric turbulence and produce high-Strehl images of observed stars in the near-infrared. While such systems enable the observation of warm gaseous companions around nearby stars, adding a second-stage AO enables to push the wavefront correction further and possibly observe colder or smaller planets. This approach is currently investigated in different exoplanet imagers (VLT/SPHERE, Mag-AOX, Subaru/SCExAO) by considering a Pyramid wavefront sensor (PWFS) in the second arm to measure the residual atmospheric turbulence left from the first stage. Since these aberrations are expected to be very small (a few tens of nm in the near-infrared domain), we propose to investigate an alternative approach based on the ZWFS. This sensor is a promising concept with a small capture range to estimate residual wavefront errors thanks to its large sensitivity, simple phase reconstruction and easiness of implementation. In this contribution, we perform preliminary tests on the GHOST testbed at ESO to validate this approach experimentally. Additional experiments with petalling effects are also showed, giving promising wavefront correction results. Finally, we briefly discuss a first comparison between PWFS-based and ZWFS-based second-stage AO to draw preliminary conclusions on the interests of both schemes for exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy with the upgrade of the current exoplanet imagers and the envisioned ExAO instruments for ELTs., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, pre-print of the proceeding of the AO4ELT7 conference held in June 2023 in Avignon, France

Abstract

The GRAVITY instrument has been revolutionary for near-infrared interferometry by pushing sensitivity and precision to previously unknown limits. With the upgrade of GRAVITY and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in GRAVITY+, these limits will be pushed even further, with vastly improved sky coverage, as well as faint-science and high-contrast capabilities. This upgrade includes the implementation of wide-field off-axis fringe-tracking, new adaptive optics systems on all Unit Telescopes, and laser guide stars in an upgraded facility. GRAVITY+ will open up the sky to the measurement of black hole masses across cosmic time in hundreds of active galactic nuclei, use the faint stars in the Galactic centre to probe General Relativity, and enable the characterisation of dozens of young exoplanets to study their formation, bearing the promise of another scientific revolution to come at the VLTI., Comment: Published in the ESO Messenger

Abstract

With a possible angular resolution down to 0.1-0.2 millisecond of arc using the 330 m baselines and the access to the 600-900 nm spectral domain, the CHARA Array is ideally configured for focusing on precise and accurate fundamental parameters of stars. CHARA/SPICA (Stellar Parameters and Images with a Cophased Array) aims at performing a large survey of stars all over the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. This survey will also study the effects of the different kinds of variability and surface structure on the reliability of the extracted fundamental parameters. New surface-brightness-colour relations will be extracted from this survey, for general purposes on distance determination and the characterization of faint stars. SPICA is made of a visible 6T fibered instrument and of a near-infrared fringe sensor. In this paper, we detail the science program and the main characteristics of SPICA-VIS. We present finally the initial performance obtained during the commissioning.

Abstract

SPICA-FT is part of the CHARA/SPICA instrument which combines a visible 6T fibered instrument (SPICAVIS) with a H-band 6T fringe sensor. SPICA-FT is a pairwise ABCD integrated optics combiner. The chip is installed in the MIRC-X instrument. The MIRC-X spectrograph could be fed either by the classical 6T fibered combiner or by the SPICA-FT integrated optics combiner. SPICA-FT also integrates a dedicated fringe tracking software, called the opd-controller communicating with the main delay line through a dedicated channel. We present the design of the integrated optics chip, its implementation in MIRC-X and the software architecture of the group-delay and phase-delay control loops. The final integrated optics chip and the software have been fully characterized in the laboratory. First on-sky tests of the integrated optics combiner began in 2020. We continue the on-sky tests of the whole system (combiner + software) in Spring and Summer 2022. We present the main results, and we deduce the preliminary performance of SPICA-FT.

Abstract

We present the testbench aimed at integrating the GRAVITY+ adaptive optics GPAO. It consists of two independent elements, one reproducing the Coud{\'e} focus of the telescope, including the telescope deformable mirror mount (with its surface facing down), and one reproducing the Coud{\'e} room opto-mechanical environment, including a downwards-propagating beam, and the telescope mechanical interfaces in order to fit in the new GPAO wavefront sensor. We discuss in this paper the design of this bench and the solutions we adopted to keep the cost low, keep the design compact (allowing it to be fully contained in a 20 sqm clean room), and align the bench independently from the adaptive optics. We also discuss the features we have set in this bench.

Abstract

The GRAVITY instrument has been revolutionary for near-infrared interferometry by pushing sensitivity and precision to previously unknown limits. With the upgrade of GRAVITY and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in GRAVITY+, these limits will be pushed even further, with vastly improved sky coverage, as well as faint-science and high-contrast capabilities. This upgrade includes the implementation of wide-field off-axis fringe-tracking, new adaptive optics systems on all Unit Telescopes, and laser guide stars in an upgraded facility. GRAVITY+ will open up the sky to the measurement of black hole masses across cosmic time in hundreds of active galactic nuclei, use the faint stars in the Galactic centre to probe General Relativity, and enable the characterisation of dozens of young exoplanets to study their formation, bearing the promise of another scientific revolution to come at the VLTI., Comment: Published in the ESO Messenger

Abstract

International audience; The VLTI has a huge potential for the study of Active Galactic Nuclei. It allows to resolve the BLR by phase differential interferometry and to make images of the inner dust « torus ». The first generation VLTI instruments AMBER and MIDI allowed studies of the size-luminosity of the inner dust structures and showed strong departures from the simple torus structure. The 2nd generation instrument MATISSE has already proven, during its commissioning, that i twill allow to increase the sample of AGNs observed in the mid infrared and it is expected to allow imaging of the inner dust on a few Seyfert 2 targets. GRAVITY recently obtained the first BLR resolution and also the first K band images of NGC1068. However, the potential of the VLTI is strongly limited by the sensitivity of its Adaptive Optics and Fringe Tracker. This communication presents a proposal for a new fringe tracking concept combined with a J band VLTI visitor instrument optimized for AGN observations. It discusses the scientific potential, the concept and the sensitivity of that combination.

Abstract

On-going developments on the PERSEE nulling testbench include the realization of a focal plane simulator featuring one central star, an extra-solar planet orbiting around it, and an Exo-Zodiacal Cloud (EZC) surrounding the observed stellar system. PERSEE (Pégase Experiment for Research and Stabilization of Extreme Extinction) is a laboratory testbench jointly developed by a Consortium of six French institutes and companies, incorporating Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (OCA) who is in charge of the manufacturing and procurement of the future Star and Planet Simulator (SPS). In this communication is presented a complete description of the SPS, including general requirements, techniques employed for simulating the observed planet and EZC, opto-mechanical design and expected performance. The current status of the SPS activities is summarized in the conclusion, pending final integration on the PERSEE test bench in September 2011.
