Search

We have conducted a GPU accelerated reprocessing of $\sim 87\%$ of the archival data from the High Time Resolution Universe South Low Latitude (HTRU-S LowLat) pulsar survey by implementing a pulsar search pipeline that was previously used to reprocess the Parkes Multibeam pulsar survey (PMPS). We coherently searched the full 72-min observations of the survey with an acceleration search range up to $|50|\, \rm m\,s^{-2}$, which is most sensitive to binary pulsars experiencing nearly constant acceleration during 72 minutes of their orbital period. Here we report the discovery of 71 pulsars, including 6 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) of which five are in binary systems, and seven pulsars with very high dispersion measures (DM $>800 \, \rm pc \, cm^{-3}$). These pulsar discoveries largely arose by folding candidates to a much lower spectral signal-to-noise ratio than previous surveys, and exploiting the coherence of folding over the incoherent summing of the Fourier components to discover new pulsars as well as candidate classification techniques. We show that these pulsars could be fainter and on average more distant as compared to both the previously reported 100 HTRU-S LowLat pulsars and background pulsar population in the survey region. We have assessed the effectiveness of our search method and the overall pulsar yield of the survey. We show that through this reprocessing we have achieved the expected survey goals including the predicted number of pulsars in the survey region and discuss the major causes as to why these pulsars were missed in previous processings of the survey., Comment: 18 Pages, 12 figures, 9 tables. PSR J0737$-$3039A/B is unique among double neutron star systems. Its near-perfect edge-on orbit causes the fast spinning pulsar A to be eclipsed by the magnetic field of the slow spinning pulsar B. Using high-sensitivity MeerKAT radio observations combined with updated constraints on the system geometry, we studied the impact of these eclipses on the incident polarization properties of pulsar A. Averaging light curves together after correcting for the rotation of pulsar B revealed enormous amounts of circular polarization and rapid changes in the linear polarization position angle, which occur at phases where emission from pulsar A is partially transmitted through the magnetosphere of pulsar B. These behaviours confirm that the eclipse mechanism is the result of synchrotron absorption in a relativistic pair-plasma confined to the closed-field region of pulsar B's truncated dipolar magnetic field. We demonstrate that changes in circular polarization handedness throughout the eclipses are directly tied to the average line of sight magnetic field direction of pulsar B, from which we unambiguously determine the complete magnetic and viewing geometry of the pulsar., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. PSR J1618-3921 is one of five known millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in eccentric orbits (eMPSs) located in the Galactic plane, whose formation is poorly understood. Earlier studies of these objects revealed significant discrepancies between observation and predictions from standard binary evolution scenarios of pulsar-Helium white dwarf binaries. We conducted observations with the L-band receiver of the MeerKAT radio telescope and the UWL receiver of the Parkes Murriyang radio telescope between 2019 and 2021. These data were added to archival observations. We perform an analysis of this joint 23-year-dataset. We use the recent observations to give a brief account of the emission properties of J1618-3921, including a Rotating Vector model fit of the linear polarisation position angle of the pulsar. The long timing baseline allowed for a highly significant measurement of the rate of advance of periastron of $\dot{\omega}$. We can only report a low significance detection of the orthometric Shapiro delay parameters $h_3$ and $\varsigma$, leading to mass estimates of the total and individual binary masses. We detect an unexpected change in the orbital period of, which is an order of magnitude larger and carries an opposite sign to what is expected from Galactic acceleration and the Shklovskii effect. We also detect a significant second derivative of the spin frequency. Furthermore, we report an unexpected, abrupt change of the mean pulse profile in June 2021 with unknown origin. We propose that the anomalous $\dot{P_b}$ and $\ddot{f}$ indicate an additional varying acceleration due to a nearby mass, i.e., the J1618-3921 binary system is likely part of a hierarchical triple. This finding suggests that at least some eMSPs might have formed in triple star systems. Current observational evidence reveals that fast radio bursts (FRBs) exhibit bandwidths ranging from a few dozen MHz to several GHz. Traditional FRB searches primarily employ matched filter methods on time series collapsed across the entire observational bandwidth. However, with modern ultra-wideband receivers featuring GHz-scale observational bandwidths, this approach may overlook a significant number of events. We investigate the efficacy of sub-banded searches for FRBs, a technique seeking bursts within limited portions of the bandwidth. These searches aim to enhance the significance of FRB detections by mitigating the impact of noise outside the targeted frequency range, thereby improving signal-to-noise ratios. We conducted a series of Monte Carlo simulations, for the $400$-MHz bandwidth Parkes 21-cm multi-beam (PMB) receiver system and the Parkes Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver, simulating bursts down to frequency widths of about $100$\,MHz. Additionally, we performed a complete reprocessing of the high-latitude segment of the High Time Resolution Universe South survey (HTRU-S) of the Parkes-Murriyang telescope using sub-banded search techniques. Simulations reveal that a sub-banded search can enhance the burst search efficiency by $67_{-42}^{+133}$ % for the PMB system and $1433_{-126}^{+143}$ % for the UWL receiver. Furthermore, the reprocessing of HTRU led to the confident detection of eighteen new bursts, nearly tripling the count of FRBs found in this survey. The eclipses seen in the radio emission of some pulsars can be invaluable to study the properties of the material from the companion stripped away by the pulsar. We present a study of six consecutive eclipses of PSR J0024-7204O in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae as seen by the MeerKAT radio telescope in the UHF (544-1088 MHz) band. A high scintillation state boosted the signal during one of the orbits and allowed a detailed study of the eclipse properties. We measure significant dispersion measure (DM) variations and detect strong scattering that seems to be the dominating mechanism of the eclipses at these frequencies. A complete drop in the linear polarization together with a small increase in the rotation measure suggests the presence of a magnetic field of $\sim 2$ mG. The study of multiple eclipses allowed us to measure difference in the lengths of the eclipses and DM differences of $\sim 0.01$ pc cm$^{-3}$ in consecutive orbits. One orbit in particular shows a delay in recovery of the linear polarization and a visible delay in the arrival of the pulses caused by a stronger scattering event. Millisecond pulsars are subject to accelerations in globular clusters (GCs) that manifest themselves in both the first and second spin period time derivatives, and can be used to explore the mass distribution of the potentials they inhabit. Here we report on over 20 yr of pulsar timing observations of five millisecond radio pulsars in the core of the core-collapse GC NGC 6752 with the Parkes (Murriyang) and MeerKAT radio telescopes, which have allowed us to measure the proper motions, positions, and first and second time derivatives of the pulsars. The pulsar timing parameters indicate that all the pulsars in the core experience accelerations and jerks that can be explained only if an amount of nonluminous mass of at least 2.56x10^3 M_SUN is present in the core of NGC 6752. On the other hand, our studies highly disfavor the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole at the center of the cluster, with a mass equal to or greater than ~3000M_SUN., Comment: Published in ApJ. We report the discovery of ten new pulsars in the globular cluster Terzan 5 as part of the Transients and Pulsars with MeerKAT (TRAPUM) Large Survey Project. We observed Terzan 5 at L-band (856--1712 MHz) with the MeerKAT radio telescope for four hours on two epochs, and performed acceleration searches of 45 out of 288 tied-array beams covering the core of the cluster. We obtained phase-connected timing solutions for nine discoveries, covering nearly two decades of archival observations from the Green Bank Telescope for all but one. Highlights include PSR J1748$-$2446ao which is an eccentric ($e = 0.32$) wide-orbit (orbital period $P_{\rm b} = 57.55$ d) system. We were able to measure the rate of advance of periastron ($\dot{\omega}$) for this system allowing us to determine a total mass of $3.17 \pm \, 0.02\, \rm M_{\odot}$. With a minimum companion mass ($M_{\rm c}$) of $\sim 0.8\, \rm M_{\odot}$, PSR J1748$-$2446ao is a candidate double neutron star (DNS) system. If confirmed to be a DNS, it would be the fastest spinning pulsar ($P = 2.27$ ms) and the longest orbital period measured for any known DNS system. PSR J1748$-$2446ap has the second highest eccentricity for any recycled pulsar ($e \sim 0.905$) and for this system we can measure the total mass ($1.997 \pm 0.006\, \rm M_{\odot}$) and also estimate the individual pulsar and companion masses. PSR J1748$-$2446ar is an eclipsing redback (minimum $M_{\rm c} \sim 0.34\, \rm M_{\odot}$) system whose properties confirm it to be the counterpart to a previously published source identified in radio and X-ray imaging. With these discoveries, the total number of confirmed pulsars in Terzan 5 is 49, the highest for any globular cluster so far. Using MeerKAT, we have discovered three new millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the bulge globular cluster M62: M62H, M62I, and M62J. All three are in binary systems, which means all ten known pulsars in the cluster are in binaries. M62H has a planetary-mass companion with a median mass $M_{\rm c,med} \sim 3$ M$_{\rm J}$ and a mean density of $\rho \sim 11$ g cm$^{-3}$. M62I has an orbital period of 0.51 days and a $M_{\rm c,med} \sim 0.15$ M$_{\odot}$. Neither of these low-mass systems exhibit eclipses. M62J has only been detected in the two UHF band (816 MHz) observations with a flux density $S_{816} = 0.08$ mJy. The non-detection in the L-band (1284 MHz) indicates it has a relatively steep spectrum ($\beta < -3.1$). We also present 23-yr-long timing solutions obtained using data from the Parkes "Murriyang", Effelsberg and MeerKAT telescopes for the six previously known pulsars. For all these pulsars, we measured the second spin-period derivatives and the rate of change of orbital period caused by the gravitational field of the cluster, and their proper motions. From these measurements, we conclude that the pulsars' maximum accelerations are consistent with the maximum cluster acceleration assuming a core-collapsed mass distribution. Studies of the eclipses of the redback M62B and the black widow M62E at four and two different frequency bands, respectively, reveal a frequency dependence with longer and asymmetric eclipses at lower frequencies. The presence of only binary MSPs in this cluster challenges models which suggest that the MSP population of core-collapsed clusters should be dominated by isolated MSPs., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. Pulse-to-pulse profile shape variations introduce correlations in pulsar times of arrival (TOAs) across radio frequency measured at the same observational epoch. This leads to a broadband noise in excess of radiometer noise, which is termed pulse jitter noise. The presence of jitter noise limits the achievable timing precision and decreases the sensitivity of pulsar-timing data sets to signals of interest such as nanohertz-frequency gravitational waves. Current white noise models used in pulsar timing analyses attempt to account for this, assuming complete correlation of uncertainties through the arrival times collected in a unique observation and no frequency dependence of jitter (which corresponds to a rank-one covariance matrix). However, previous studies show that the brightest millisecond pulsar at decimetre wavelengths, PSR J0437$-$4715, shows decorrelation and frequency dependence of jitter noise. Here we present a detailed study of the decorrelation of jitter noise in PSR J0437$-$4715 and implement a new technique to model it. We show that the rate of decorrelation due to jitter can be expressed as a power-law in frequency. We analyse the covariance matrix associated with the jitter noise process and find that a higher-rank-approximation is essential to account for the decorrelation and to account for frequency dependence of jitter noise. We show that the use of this novel method significantly improves the estimation of other chromatic noise parameters such as dispersion measure variations. However, we find no significant improvement in errors and estimation of other timing model parameters suggesting that current methods are not biased for other parameters, for this pulsar due to this misspecification. PSR J1012$-$4235 is a 3.1ms pulsar in a wide binary (37.9 days) with a white dwarf companion. We detect, for the first time, a strong relativistic Shapiro delay signature in PSR J1012$-$4235. Our detection is the result of a timing analysis of data spanning 13 years and collected with the Green Bank, Parkes, and MeerKAT Radio Telescopes and the Fermi $\gamma$-ray space telescope. We measured the orthometric parameters for Shapiro delay and obtained a 22$\sigma$ detection of the $h_{\rm 3}$ parameter of 1.222(54) $\mu$s and a 200$\sigma$ detection of $\varsigma$ of 0.9646(49). With the assumption of general relativity, these measurements constrain the pulsar mass ($M_{\rm p}=1.44^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$M$_{\odot}$), the mass of the white dwarf companion ($M_{\rm c} = 0.270^{+0.016}_{-0.015}$M$_{\odot}$ ), and the orbital inclination ($i=88.06^{+0.28}_{-0.25} \deg$). Including the early $\gamma$-ray data in our timing analysis facilitated a precise measurement of the proper motion of the system of 6.58(5) mas yr$^{-1}$. We also show that the system has unusually small kinematic corrections to the measurement of the orbital period derivative, and therefore has the potential to yield stringent constraints on the variation of the gravitational constant in the future., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 10 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

The double pulsar system, PSR J0737$-$3039A/B, consists of two neutron stars bound together in a highly relativistic orbit that is viewed nearly edge-on from the Earth. This alignment results in brief radio eclipses of the fast-rotating pulsar A when it passes behind the toroidal magnetosphere of the slow-rotating pulsar B. The morphology of these eclipses is strongly dependent on the geometric orientation and rotation phase of pulsar B, and their time-evolution can be used to constrain the geodetic precession rate of the pulsar. We demonstrate a Bayesian inference framework for modelling eclipse light-curves obtained with MeerKAT between 2019-2023. Using a hierarchical inference approach, we obtained a precession rate of $\Omega_{\rm SO}^{\rm B} = {5.16^{\circ}}^{+0.32^{\circ}}_{-0.34^{\circ}}$ yr$^{-1}$ for pulsar B, consistent with predictions from General Relativity to a relative uncertainty of 6.5%. This updated measurement provides a 6.1% test of relativistic spin-orbit coupling in the strong-field regime. We show that a simultaneous fit to all of our observed eclipses can in principle return a $\sim$1.5% test of spin-orbit coupling. However, systematic effects introduced by the current geometric orientation of pulsar B along with inconsistencies between the observed and predicted eclipse light curves result in difficult to quantify uncertainties. Assuming the validity of General Relativity, we definitively show that the spin-axis of pulsar B is misaligned from the total angular momentum vector by $40.6^{\circ} \pm 0.1^{\circ}$ and that the orbit of the system is inclined by approximately $90.5^{\circ}$ from the direction of our line of sight. Our measured geometry for pulsar B suggests the largely empty emission cone contains an elongated horseshoe shaped beam centered on the magnetic axis, and that it may not be re-detected as a radio pulsar until early-2035., Comment: Abridged abstract. 13 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables

The HTRU-S Low Latitude survey data within 1$^{\circ}$of the Galactic Centre (GC) were searched for pulsars using the Fast Folding Algorithm (FFA). Unlike traditional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) pipelines, the FFA optimally folds the data for all possible periods over a given range, which is particularly advantageous for pulsars with low-duty cycle. For the first time, a search over acceleration was included in the FFA to improve its sensitivity to binary pulsars. The steps in dispersion measure (DM) and acceleration were optimised, resulting in a reduction of the number of trials by 86 per cent. This was achieved over a search period range from 0.6-s to 432-s, i.e. 10 per cent of the observation time (4320s), with a maximum DM of 4000 pc cm$^{-3}$ and an acceleration range of $\pm 128$m s$^{-2}$. The search resulted in the re-detections of four known pulsars, including a pulsar which was missed in previous FFT processing of this survey. This result indicates that the FFA pipeline is more sensitive than the FFT pipeline used in the previous processing of the survey within our parameter range. Additionally, we discovered a 1.89-s pulsar, PSR J1746-2829, with a large DM, located~0.5 from the GC. Follow-up observations revealed that this pulsar has a relatively flat spectrum($\alpha=-0.9\pm0.1$) and has a period derivative of $\sim1.3\times10^{-12}$ s s$^{-1}$, implying a surface magnetic field of $\sim5.2\times10^{13}$ G and a characteristic age of $\sim23000$ yr. We present a flux density study of 89 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) regularly monitored as part of the MeerKAT Pulsar Timing Array (MPTA) using the L-Band receiver with an approximately two week cadence between 2019-2022. For each pulsar, we have determined the mean flux densities at each epoch in eight $\sim$97 MHz sub-bands ranging from 944 to 1625 MHz. From these we have derived their modulation indices, their average and peak-to-median flux densities in each sub-band, as well as their mean spectral indices across the entire frequency range. We find that the vast majority of the MSPs have spectra that are well described by a simple power law, with a mean spectral index of -1.86(6). Using the temporal variation of the flux densities we measured the structure functions and determined the refractive scintillation timescale for seven. The structure functions provide strong evidence that the intrinsic radio luminosities of MSPs are stable. As a population, the average modulation index at 20 cm wavelengths peaks near unity at dispersion measures (DMs) of $\sim$20 pc cm$^{-3}$ and by a DM of 100 pc cm$^{-3}$ are closer to 0.2, due to refractive scintillation. We find that timing arrays can improve their observing efficiency by reacting to scintillation maxima, and that 20 cm FRB surveys should prioritise highly scintillating mid-latitude regions of the Galactic sky where they will find $\sim$30% more events and bursts at greater distances., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Australian, Chinese, European, Indian, and North American pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations recently reported, at varying levels, evidence for the presence of a nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB). Given that each PTA made different choices in modeling their data, we perform a comparison of the GWB and individual pulsar noise parameters across the results reported from the PTAs that constitute the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). We show that despite making different modeling choices, there is no significant difference in the GWB parameters that are measured by the different PTAs, agreeing within $1\sigma$. The pulsar noise parameters are also consistent between different PTAs for the majority of the pulsars included in these analyses. We bridge the differences in modeling choices by adopting a standardized noise model for all pulsars and PTAs, finding that under this model there is a reduction in the tension in the pulsar noise parameters. As part of this reanalysis, we "extended" each PTA's data set by adding extra pulsars that were not timed by that PTA. Under these extensions, we find better constraints on the GWB amplitude and a higher signal-to-noise ratio for the Hellings and Downs correlations. These extensions serve as a prelude to the benefits offered by a full combination of data across all pulsars in the IPTA, i.e., the IPTA's Data Release 3, which will involve not just adding in additional pulsars, but also including data from all three PTAs where any given pulsar is timed by more than as single PTA., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present a comprehensive study of the rotational and emission properties of PSR J0738$-$4042 using a combination of observations taken by the Deep Space Network, Hartebeesthoek, Parkes (Murriyang) and Molonglo observatories between 1972 and 2023. Our timing of the pulsar is motivated by previously reported profile/spin-down events that occurred in September 2005 and December 2015, which result in an anomalously large braking index of $n = 23300 \pm 1800$. Using a Gaussian process regression framework, we develop continuous models for the evolution of the pulsar spin-down rate ($\dot{\nu}$) and profile shape. We find that the pulse profile variations are similar regardless of radio observing frequency and polarisation. Small-scale differences can be ascribed to changes in the interstellar medium along the line of sight and frequency-dependent changes in magnetospheric radio emission height. No new correlated spin-down or profile events were identified in our extended dataset. However, we found that the disappearance of a bright emission component in the leading edge of archival profiles between 1981-1988 was not associated with a substantial change in $\dot{\nu}$. This marks a notable departure from the previous profile/spin-down events in this pulsar. We discuss the challenges these observations pose for physical models and conclude that interactions between the pulsar and in-falling asteroids or a form of magnetospheric state-switching with a long periodicity are plausible explanations., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. PSR J1757$-$1854 is one of the most relativistic double neutron star binary systems known in our Galaxy, with an orbital period of $P_\text{b}=4.4\,\text{hr}$ and an orbital eccentricity of $e=0.61$. As such, it has promised to be an outstanding laboratory for conducting tests of relativistic gravity. We present the results of a 6-yr campaign with the 100-m Green Bank and 64-m Parkes radio telescopes, designed to capitalise on this potential. We identify secular changes in the profile morphology and polarisation of PSR J1757$-$1854, confirming the presence of geodetic precession and allowing the constraint of viewing geometry solutions consistent with General Relativity. We also update PSR J1757$-$1854's timing, including new constraints of the pulsar's proper motion, post-Keplerian parameters and component masses. We conclude that the radiative test of gravity provided by PSR J1757$-$1854 is fundamentally limited to a precision of 0.3 per cent due to the pulsar's unknown distance. A search for pulsations from the companion neutron star is also described, with negative results. We provide an updated evaluation of the system's evolutionary history, finding strong support for a large kick velocity of $w\ge280\,\text{km s}^{-1}$ following the second progenitor supernova. Finally, we reassess PSR J1757$-$1854's potential to provide new relativistic tests of gravity. We conclude that a 3-$\sigma$ constraint of the change in the projected semi-major axis ($\dot{x}$) associated with Lense-Thirring precession is expected no earlier than 2031. PSR J1933$-$6211 is a 3.5-ms pulsar in a 12.8-d orbit with a white dwarf (WD). Its high proper motion and low dispersion measure result in such significant interstellar scintillation that high signal-to-noise detections require long observing durations or fortuitous timing. We turn to the sensitive MeerKAT telescope and, combined with historic Parkes data, leverage PSR J1933$-$6211's kinematic and relativistic effects to constrain its 3D orbital geometry and the component masses. We obtain precise proper motion and parallax estimates, and measure their effects as secular changes in the Keplerian orbital parameters: a variation in orbital period of $7(1) \times 10^{-13}$ s s$^{-1}$ and a change in projected semi-major axis of $1.60(5) \times 10^{-14}$ s s$^{-1}$. A self-consistent analysis of all kinematic and relativistic effects yields a distance of $1.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ kpc, an orbital inclination, $i = 55(1)$ deg and a longitude of the ascending node, $\Omega = 255^{+8}_{-14}$ deg. The probability densities for $\Omega$ and $i$ and their symmetric counterparts, ($180-i$, $360-\Omega$), are seen to depend on the fiducial orbit used to measure the time of periastron passage. We investigate this unexpected dependence and rule out software-related causes using simulations. Nevertheless, we constrain the pulsar and WD masses to $1.4^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ M$_\odot$ and $0.43(5)$ M$_\odot$ respectively. These strongly disfavour a helium-dominated WD. The orbital similarities between PSRs J1933$-$6211 and J1614$-$2230 suggest they underwent Case A Roche lobe overflow, an extended evolution while the companion star is still on the Main Sequence. However, with a mass of $\sim 1.4$ M$_\odot$, PSR J1933$-$6211 has not accreted significant matter. This highlights the low accretion efficiency of the spin-up process and suggests that observed neutron star masses are mostly a result of supernova physics., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. PSR J1528-3146 is a 60.8 ms pulsar orbiting a heavy white dwarf (WD) companion, with an orbital period of 3.18 d. This work aimed at characterizing the pulsar's astrometric, spin and orbital parameters by analyzing timing measurements conducted at the Parkes, MeerKAT and Nan\c{c}ay radio telescopes over almost two decades. The measurement of post-Keplerian perturbations to the pulsar's orbit can be used to constrain the masses of the two component stars of the binary, and in turn inform us on the history of the system. We analyzed timing data from the Parkes, MeerKAT and Nan\c{c}ay radio telescopes collected over $\sim$16 yrs, obtaining a precise rotation ephemeris for PSR J1528-3146. A Bayesian analysis of the timing data was carried out to constrain the masses of the two components and the orientation of the orbit. We further analyzed the polarization properties of the pulsar, in order to constrain the orientations of the magnetic axis and of the line-of-sight with respect to the spin axis. We measured a significant rate of advance of periastron for the first time, and put constraints on the Shapiro delay in the system and on the rate of change of the projected semi-major axis of the pulsar's orbit. The Bayesian analysis yielded measurements for the pulsar and companion masses of respectively $M_p = 1.61_{-0.13}^{+0.14}$ M$_\odot$ and $M_c = 1.33_{-0.07}^{+0.08}$ M$_\odot$ (68\% C.L.), confirming that the companion is indeed massive. This companion mass as well as other characteristics of PSR J1528$-$3146 make this pulsar very similar to PSR J2222-0137, a 32.8 ms pulsar orbiting a WD whose heavy mass ($\sim 1.32$ M$_\odot$) was unique among pulsar-WD systems until now. The International Pulsar Timing Array 2nd data release is the combination of datasets from worldwide collaborations. In this study, we search for continuous waves: gravitational wave signals produced by individual supermassive black hole binaries in the local universe. We consider binaries on circular orbits and neglect the evolution of orbital frequency over the observational span. We find no evidence for such signals and set sky averaged 95% upper limits on their amplitude h 95 . The most sensitive frequency is 10nHz with h 95 = 9.1 10-15 . We achieved the best upper limit to date at low and high frequencies of the PTA band thanks to improved effective cadence of observations. In our analysis, we have taken into account the recently discovered common red noise process, which has an impact at low frequencies. We also find that the peculiar noise features present in some pulsars data must be taken into account to reduce the false alarm. We show that using custom noise models is essential in searching for continuous gravitational wave signals and setting the upper limit.

We present the discovery of 37 pulsars from $\sim$ 20 years old archival data of the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey using a new FFT-based search pipeline optimised for discovering narrow-duty cycle pulsars. When developing our pulsar search pipeline, we noticed that the signal-to-noise ratios of folded and optimised pulsars often exceeded that achieved in the spectral domain by a factor of two or greater, in particular for narrow duty cycle ones. Based on simulations, we verified that this is a feature of search codes that sum harmonics incoherently and found that many promising pulsar candidates are revealed when hundreds of candidates per beam with even with modest spectral signal-to-noise ratios of S/N$\sim$5--6 in higher-harmonic folds (up to 32 harmonics) are folded. Of these candidates, 37 were confirmed as new pulsars and a further 37 would have been new discoveries if our search strategies had been used at the time of their initial analysis. While 19 of these newly discovered pulsars have also been independently discovered in more recent pulsar surveys, 18 are exclusive to only the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey data. Some of the notable discoveries include: PSRs J1635$-$47 and J1739$-$31, which show pronounced high-frequency emission; PSRs J1655$-$40 and J1843$-$08, which belong to the nulling/intermittent class of pulsars; and PSR J1636$-$51, which is an interesting binary system in a $\sim$0.75 d orbit and shows hints of eclipsing behaviour -- unusual given the 340 ms rotation period of the pulsar. We report on the subpulse modulation properties of 1198 pulsars using the Thousand-Pulsar-Array programme on MeerKAT. About 35% of the analysed pulsars exhibit drifting subpulses which are more pronounced towards the deathline, consistent with previous studies. We estimate that this common phenomenon is detectable in 60% of the overall pulsar population if high quality data were available for all. This large study reveals the evolution of drifting subpulses across the pulsar population in unprecedented detail. In particular, we find that the modulation period $P_3$ follows a V-shaped evolution with respect to the characteristic age $\tau_c$, such that the smallest $P_3$ values, corresponding to the Nyquist period $P_3>\sim2$, are found at $\tau_c>\sim10^{7.5}$ yr. The V-shaped evolution can be interpreted and reproduced if young pulsars possess aliased fast intrinsic $P_3$, which monotonically increase, ultimately achieving a slow unaliased $P_3$. Enhancement of irregularities in intrinsic subpulse modulation by aliasing in small $\tau_c$ pulsars would explain their observed less well defined $P_3$'s and weaker spectral features. Modelling these results as rotating subbeams, their circulation must slow down as the pulsar evolves. This is the opposite to that expected if circulation is driven by ExB drift. This can be resolved if the observed $P_3$ periodicity is due to a beat between an ExB system and the pulsar period. PSRJ1910-5959A (J1910A) is a binary millisecond pulsar in a 0.837 day circular orbit around a helium white dwarf (HeWD) companion. This pulsar is located 6.3 arcmin away from the centre of the globular cluster NGC6752. Given the large offset, the association of the pulsar to NGC6752 has been debated. We have made use of two decades of archival Parkes 64-m "Murriyang" telescope data and recently carried out observations with the MeerKAT telescope. We obtained Pulse times of arrival using standard data reduction techniques and analysed using Bayesian pulsar timing techniques. We analysed the pulsar's total intensity and polarisation profile, to study the interstellar scattering along the line of sight, and the pulsar's geometry by applying the rotating vector model. We obtain precise measurements of several post-Keplerian parameters: the range $r=0.202(6)T_\odot$ and shape s=0.999823(4) of the Shapiro delay, from which we infer the orbital inclination to be $88.9^{+0.15}_{-0.14}\deg$ and the masses of both the pulsar and the companion to be $1.55(7)M_{\odot}$ and $0.202(6)M_{\odot}$ respectively; a secular change in the orbital period $\dot{P}_{\rm b}=-53^{+7.4}_{-6.0}\times 10^{-15}$\,s\,s$^{-1}$ that proves the association to NGGC6752 and a secular change in the projected semi-major axis of the pulsar $\dot{x}= -40.7^{+7.3}_{-8.2}\times10^{-16}$\,s\,s$^{-1}$ that is likely caused by the spin-orbit interaction from a misaligned HeWD spin, at odds with the likely isolated binary evolution of the system. We also discuss some theoretical models for the structure and evolution of WDs in NS-WD binaries by using J1910A's companion as a test bed. J1910A is a rare system for which several parameters of both the pulsar and the HeWD companion can be accurately measured. We present the largest single survey to date of average profiles of radio pulsars, observed and processed using the same telescope and data reduction software. Specifically, we present measurements for 1170 pulsars, observed by the Thousand Pulsar Array (TPA) programme at the 64-dish SARAO MeerKAT radio telescope, in a frequency band from 856 to 1712 MHz. We provide rotation measures (RM), dispersion measures, flux densities and polarization properties. The catalogue includes 254 new RMs that substantially increase the total number of known pulsar RMs. Our integration times typically span over 1000 individual rotations per source. We show that the radio (pseudo)luminosity has a strong, shallow dependence on the spin-down energy, proportional to $\dot{E}^{0.15\pm0.04}$, that contradicts some previous proposals of population synthesis studies. In addition, we find a significant correlation between the steepness of the observed flux density spectra and $\dot{E}$, and correlations of the fractional linear polarization with $\dot{E}$, the spectral index, and the pulse width, which we discuss in the context of what is known about pulsar radio emission and how pulsars evolve with time. On the whole, we do not see significant correlations with the estimated surface magnetic field strength, and the correlations with $\dot{E}$ are much stronger than those with the characteristic age. This finding lends support to the suggestion that magnetic dipole braking may not be the dominant factor for the evolution of pulsar rotation over the lifetimes of pulsars. We present the polarization profiles of 22 pulsars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae using observations from the MeerKAT radio telescope at UHF-band (544-1088 MHz) and report precise values of dispersion measure (DM) and rotation measure (RM). We use these measurements to investigate the presence of turbulence in electron density and magnetic fields. The structure function of DM shows a break at $\sim 30$ arcsec ($\sim 0.6$ pc at the distance of 47 Tucanae) that suggests the presence of turbulence in the gas in the cluster driven by the motion of wind-shedding stars. On the other hand, the structure function of RM does not show evidence of a break. This non-detection could be explained either by the limited number of pulsars or by the effects of the intervening gas in the Galaxy along the line of sight. The Double Pulsar, PSR J0737-3039A/B, has offered a wealth of gravitational experiments in the strong-field regime, all of which GR has passed with flying colours. In particular, among current gravity experiments that test photon propagation, the Double Pulsar probes the strongest spacetime curvature. Observations with MeerKAT and, in future, the SKA can greatly improve the accuracy of current tests and facilitate tests of NLO contributions in both orbital motion and signal propagation. We present our timing analysis of new observations of PSR J0737-3039A, made using the MeerKAT telescope over the last 3 years. The increased timing precision offered by MeerKAT yields a 2 times better measurement of Shapiro delay parameter s and improved mass measurements compared to previous studies. In addition, our results provide an independent confirmation of the NLO signal propagation effects and already surpass the previous measurement from 16-yr data by a factor of 1.65. These effects include the retardation effect due to the movement of B and the deflection of the signal by the gravitational field of B. We also investigate novel effects which are expected. For instance, we search for potential profile variations near superior conjunctions caused by shifts of the line-of-sight due to latitudinal signal deflection and find insignificant evidence with our current data. With simulations, we find that the latitudinal deflection delay is unlikely to be measured with timing because of its correlation with Shapiro delay. Furthermore, although it is currently not possible to detect the expected lensing correction to the Shapiro delay, our simulations suggest that this effect may be measured with the full SKA. The observable population of double neutron star (DNS) systems in the Milky Way allow us to understand the nature of supernovae and binary stellar evolution. Until now, all DNS systems in wide orbits ($ P_{\textrm{orb}}>$ 1~day) have been found to have orbital eccentricities, $e > 0.1$. In this paper, we report the discovery of pulsar PSR J1325$-$6253: a DNS system in a 1.81 day orbit with a surprisingly low eccentricity of just $e = 0.064$. Through 1.4 yr of dedicated timing with the Parkes radio telescope we have been able to measure its rate of advance of periastron, $\dot{\omega}=0.138 \pm 0.002$ $\rm deg$ $\rm yr^{-1}$. If this induced $\dot{\omega}$ is solely due to general relativity then the total mass of the system is, $M_{\rm sys} = 2.57 \pm 0.06$ M$_{\odot}$. Assuming an edge-on orbit the minimum companion mass is constrained to be $M_\mathrm{c,min}>0.98$ M$_{\odot}$ which implies the pulsar mass is $M_\mathrm{p,max}<1.59 $ M$_{\odot}$. Its location in the $P$-$\dot{P}$ diagram suggests that, like other DNS systems, PSR J1325$-$6253 is a recycled pulsar and if its mass is similar to the known examples ($>1.3$ M$_\odot$), then the companion neutron star is probably less than $\sim1.25$ M$_\odot$ and the system is inclined at about $50^{\circ}$-$60^{\circ}$. MeerTime is a five-year Large Survey Project to time pulsars with MeerKAT, the 64-dish South African precursor to the Square Kilometre Array. The science goals for the programme include timing millisecond pulsars (MSPs) to high precision (< 1 $\mu$s) to study the Galactic MSP population and to contribute to global efforts to detect nanohertz gravitational waves with the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). In order to plan for the remainder of the programme and to use the allocated time most efficiently, we have conducted an initial census with the MeerKAT "L-band" receiver of 189 MSPs visible to MeerKAT and here present their dispersion measures, polarization profiles, polarization fractions, rotation measures, flux density measurements, spectral indices, and timing potential. As all of these observations are taken with the same instrument (which uses coherent dedispersion, interferometric polarization calibration techniques, and a uniform flux scale), they present an excellent resource for population studies. We used wideband pulse portraits as timing standards for each MSP and demonstrated that the MeerTime Pulsar Timing Array (MPTA) can already contribute significantly to the IPTA as it currently achieves better than 1 $\mu$s timing accuracy on 89 MSPs (observed with fortnightly cadence). Using the MeerKAT radio telescope, a series of observations have been conducted to time the known pulsars and search for new pulsars in the globular cluster NGC 6440. As a result, two pulsars have been discovered, NGC 6440G and NGC 6440H, one of which is isolated and the other a non-eclipsing (at frequencies above 962 MHz) "Black Widow", with a very low mass companion (M$_{\rm c}$ > 0.006 M$_{\odot}$). It joins the other binary pulsars discovered so far in this cluster which all have low companion masses (M$_{\rm c}$ < 0.30 M$_{\odot}$). We present the results of long-term timing solutions obtained using data from both Green Bank and MeerKAT telescopes for these two new pulsars and an analysis of the pulsars NGC 6440C and NGC 6440D. For the isolated pulsar NGC 6440C, we searched for planets using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique. We find evidence for significant unmodelled variations but they cannot be well modelled as planets nor as part of a power-law red-noise process. Studies of the eclipses of the "Redback" pulsar NGC 6440D at two different frequency bands reveal a frequency dependence with longer and asymmetric eclipses at lower frequencies (962-1283 MHz)., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. We provide an update on the ongoing monitoring and study of the highly-relativistic double neutron star binary system PSR J1757-1854, a 21.5-ms pulsar in a highly eccentric, 4.4-hour orbit. The extreme nature of this pulsar's orbit allows it to probe a parameter space largely unexplored by other relativistic binary pulsars. For example, it displays one of the highest gravitational wave (GW) luminosities of any known binary pulsar, as well as the highest rate or orbital decay due to GW damping. PSR J1757-1854 is also notable in that it is an excellent candidate for exploring new tests of General Relativity and other gravitational theories, with possible measurements of both Lense-Thirring precession and relativistic orbital deformation (through the post-Keplerian parameter $\delta_\theta$) anticipated within the next 3-5 years. Here we present a summary of the latest interim results from the ongoing monitoring of this pulsar as part of an international, multi-telescope campaign. This includes an update of the pulsar's long-term timing and post-Keplerian parameters, new constraints on the pulsar's proper motion and corresponding Shklovskii kinematic correction, and new limits on the pulsar's geodetic precession as determined by monitoring for secular changes in the pulse profile. We report the discovery of 13 new pulsars in the globular cluster NGC 1851 by the TRAPUM Large Survey Project using the MeerKAT radio telescope. The discoveries consist of six isolated millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and seven binary pulsars, of which six are MSPs and one is mildly recycled. For all the pulsars, we present the basic kinematic, astrometric, and orbital parameters, where applicable, as well as their polarimetric properties, when these are measurable. Two of the binary MSPs (PSR J0514-4002D and PSR J0514-4002E) are in wide and extremely eccentric (e > 0.7) orbits with a heavy white dwarf and a neutron star as their companion, respectively. With these discoveries, NGC 1851 is now tied with M28 as the cluster with the third largest number of known pulsars (14). Its pulsar population shows remarkable similarities with that of M28, Terzan 5 and other clusters with comparable structural parameters. PSR J0955$-$6150 is a member of a class of eccentric MSP+He WD systems (eMSPs), whose binary evolution is poorly understood and believed to be different to that of traditional MSP+He WD systems. Measuring the masses of the stars in this system is important for testing hypotheses for the formation of eMSPs. We have carried out observations of this pulsar with the Parkes and MeerKAT radio telescopes. Our observations reveal a strong frequency evolution of this pulsar's intensity, with a spectral index ($\alpha$) of $-3.13(2)$. The sensitivity of MeerKAT has resulted in a $>10$-fold improvement in the timing precision compared to older Parkes observations. Combined with the 8-year timing baseline, it has allowed precise measurements of a proper motion and three orbital "post-Keplerian" parameters: the rate of advance of periastron, $\dot{\omega} = 0.00152(1) \, {\rm deg} \, yr^{-1}$ and the orthometric Shapiro delay parameters, $h_3 = 0.89(7) \, \mu$s and $\varsigma = 0.88(2)$. Assuming general relativity, we obtain $M_{p} = 1.71(2) \, M_{\odot}$ for the mass of the pulsar and $M_{c} = 0.254(2) \, M_{\odot}$ for the mass of the companion; the orbital inclination is 83.2(4) degrees. We find that the spin axis has a misalignment relative to the orbital angular momentum of $> 4.8$ degrees at 99% CI. While the value of $M_{\rm p}$ falls within the wide range observed in eMSPs, $M_{\rm c}$ is significantly smaller than expected, allowing several formation hypotheses being ruled out. $M_{\rm c}$ is also significantly different from the expected value for an ideal low mass X-ray binary evolution scenario. The putative misalignment between the spin axis of the pulsar and the orbital angular momentum suggests that the unknown process that created the orbital eccentricity of the binary was also capable of changing its orbital orientation, an important evidence for understanding the origin of eMSPs., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication by the A&A

A systematic, semi-automated search for pulsar glitches in the first UTMOST public data release is presented. The search is carried out using a hidden Markov model which incorporates both glitches and timing noise into the model of the assumed phase evolution of the pulsar. Glitches are detected through Bayesian model selection between models with and without glitches present with minimal human intervention. Nine glitches are detected among seven objects, all of which have been previously reported. No new glitches were detected. Injection studies are used to place 90\% frequentist upper limits on the size of undetected glitches in each of the 282 objects searched. The mean upper limit obtained is $\Delta f^{90\%}/f = 1.9 \times 10^{-8}$, with a range of $4.1 \times 10^{-11} \leq \Delta f^{90\%}/f \leq 2.7 \times 10^{-7}$, assuming step events with no post-glitch recoveries. It is demonstrated that including glitch recovery has a mild effect, in most cases increasing the upper limit by a factor of $\lesssim 5$ conservatively assuming complete recovery on a timescale of $100\,\mathrm{d}$., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We searched for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background in the second data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array, a global collaboration synthesizing decadal-length pulsar-timing campaigns in North America, Europe, and Australia. In our reference search for a power law strain spectrum of the form $h_c = A(f/1\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1})^{\alpha}$, we found strong evidence for a spectrally-similar low-frequency stochastic process of amplitude $A = 3.8^{+6.3}_{-2.5}\times10^{-15}$ and spectral index $\alpha = -0.5 \pm 0.5$, where the uncertainties represent 95\% credible regions, using information from the auto- and cross-correlation terms between the pulsars in the array. For a spectral index of $\alpha = -2/3$, as expected from a population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries, the recovered amplitude is $A = 2.8^{+1.2}_{-0.8}\times10^{-15}$. Nonetheless, no significant evidence of the Hellings-Downs correlations that would indicate a gravitational-wave origin was found. We also analyzed the constituent data from the individual pulsar timing arrays in a consistent way, and clearly demonstrate that the combined international data set is more sensitive. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this combined data set produces comparable constraints to recent single-array data sets which have more data than the constituent parts of the combination. Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully-coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow the frequency and frequency time-derivative of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours-months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. We present a targeted search for continuous gravitational waves (GWs) from 236 pulsars using data from the third observing run of LIGO and Virgo (O3) combined with data from the second observing run (O2). Searches were for emission from the $l=m=2$ mass quadrupole mode with a frequency at only twice the pulsar rotation frequency (single harmonic) and the $l=2, m=1,2$ modes with a frequency of both once and twice the rotation frequency (dual harmonic). No evidence of GWs was found so we present 95\% credible upper limits on the strain amplitudes $h_0$ for the single harmonic search along with limits on the pulsars' mass quadrupole moments $Q_{22}$ and ellipticities $\varepsilon$. Of the pulsars studied, 23 have strain amplitudes that are lower than the limits calculated from their electromagnetically measured spin-down rates. These pulsars include the millisecond pulsars J0437\textminus4715 and J0711\textminus6830 which have spin-down ratios of 0.87 and 0.57 respectively. For nine pulsars, their spin-down limits have been surpassed for the first time. For the Crab and Vela pulsars our limits are factors of $\sim 100$ and $\sim 20$ more constraining than their spin-down limits, respectively. For the dual harmonic searches, new limits are placed on the strain amplitudes $C_{21}$ and $C_{22}$. The Magellanic Clouds are the only external galaxies known to host radio pulsars. The dispersion and rotation measures of pulsars in the Clouds can aid in understanding their structure, and studies of the pulsars themselves can point to potential differences between them and their Galactic counterparts. We use the high sensitivity of the MeerKAT telescope to observe 17 pulsars in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds in addition to five foreground (Galactic) pulsars. We provide polarization profiles for 18 of these pulsars, improved measurements of their dispersion and rotation measures, and derive the mean parallel magnetic field along the lines of sight. The results are broadly in agreement with expectations for the structure and strength of the magnetic field in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The Magellanic Cloud pulsars have profiles which are narrower than expected from the period-width relationship and we show this is due to selection effects in pulsar surveys rather than any intrinsic difference between the population of Galactic and Magellanic objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report observed and derived timing parameters for three millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from observations collected with the Parkes 64-m telescope, Murriyang. The pulsars were found during re-processing of archival survey data by Mickaliger et al. One of the new pulsars (PSR J1546-5925) has a spin period $P=7.8$ ms and is isolated. The other two (PSR J0921-5202 with $P=9.7$ ms and PSR J1146-6610 with $P=3.7$ ms) are in binary systems around low-mass ($>0.2 M_{\odot}$) companions. Their respective orbital periods are $38$.2 d and $62.8$ d. While PSR J0921-5202 has a low orbital eccentricity $e=1.3 \times 10^{-5}$, in keeping with many other Galactic MSPs, PSR J1146-6610 has a significantly larger eccentricity, $e = 7.4 \times 10^{-3}$. This makes it a likely member of a group of eccentric MSP-He white dwarf binary systems in the Galactic disk whose formation is poorly understood. Two of the pulsars are co-located with previously unidentified point sources discovered with the Fermi satellite's Large Area Telescope, but no $\gamma$-ray pulsations have been detected, likely due to their low spin-down powers. A nanohertz-frequency stochastic gravitational-wave background can potentially be detected through the precise timing of an array of millisecond pulsars. This background produces low-frequency noise in the pulse arrival times that would have a characteristic spectrum common to all pulsars and a well-defined spatial correlation. Recently the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves collaboration (NANOGrav) found evidence for the common-spectrum component in their 12.5-year data set. Here we report on a search for the background using the second data release of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array. If we are forced to choose between the two NANOGrav models $\unicode{x2014}$ one with a common-spectrum process and one without $\unicode{x2014}$ we find strong support for the common-spectrum process. However, in this paper, we consider the possibility that the analysis suffers from model misspecification. In particular, we present simulated data sets that contain noise with distinctive spectra but show strong evidence for a common-spectrum process under the standard assumptions. The Parkes data show no significant evidence for, or against, the spatially correlated Hellings-Downs signature of the gravitational-wave background. Assuming we did observe the process underlying the spatially uncorrelated component of the background, we infer its amplitude to be $A = 2.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3} \times 10^{-15}$ in units of gravitational-wave strain at a frequency of $1\, \text{yr}^{-1}$. Extensions and combinations of existing and new data sets will improve the prospects of identifying spatial correlations that are necessary to claim a detection of the gravitational-wave background., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The main goal of pulsar timing array experiments is to detect correlated signals such as nanohertz-frequency gravitational waves. Pulsar timing data collected in dense monitoring campaigns can also be used to study the stars themselves, their binary companions, and the intervening ionised interstellar medium. Timing observations are extraordinarily sensitive to changes in path length between the pulsar and the Earth, enabling precise measurements of the pulsar positions, distances and velocities, and the shapes of their orbits. Here we present a timing analysis of 25 pulsars observed as part of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) project over time spans of up to 24 yr. The data are from the second data release of the PPTA, which we have extended by including legacy data. We make the first detection of Shapiro delay in four Southern pulsars (PSRs J1017$-$7156, J1125$-$6014, J1545$-$4550, and J1732$-$5049), and of parallax in six pulsars. The prominent Shapiro delay of PSR J1125$-$6014 implies a neutron star mass of $M_p = 1.5 \pm 0.2 M_\odot$ (68% credibility interval). Measurements of both Shapiro delay and relativistic periastron advance in PSR J1600$-$3053 yield a large but uncertain pulsar mass of $M_p = 2.06^{+0.44}_{-0.41}$ M$_\odot$ (68% credibility interval). We measure the distance to PSR J1909$-$3744 to a precision of 10 lyr, indicating that for gravitational wave periods over a decade, the pulsar provides a coherent baseline for pulsar timing array experiments., Comment: 44 pages, 32 figures, 7 tables. We have measured the scattering timescale, $\tau$, and the scattering spectral index, $\alpha$, for 84 single-component pulsars. Observations were carried out with the MeerKAT telescope as part of the Thousand-Pulsar-Array programme in the MeerTime project at frequencies between 0.895 and 1.670 GHz. Our results give a distribution of values for $\alpha$ (defined in terms of $\tau$ and frequency $\nu$ as $\tau\propto\nu^{-\alpha}$) for which, upon fitting a Gaussian, we obtain a mean and standard deviation of $\langle\alpha\rangle = 4.0 \pm 0.6$. This is due to our identification of possible causes of inaccurate measurement of $\tau$, which, if not filtered out of modelling results, tend to lead to underestimation of $\alpha$. The pulsars in our sample have large dispersion measures and are therefore likely to be distant. We find that a model using an isotropic scatter broadening function is consistent with the data, likely due to the averaging effect of multiple scattering screens along the line of sight. Magnetars are a promising candidate for the origin of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). The detection of an extremely luminous radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 on 2020 April 28 added credence to this hypothesis. We report on simultaneous and non-simultaneous observing campaigns using the Arecibo, Effelsberg, LOFAR, MeerKAT, MK2 and Northern Cross radio telescopes and the MeerLICHT optical telescope in the days and months after the April 28 event. We did not detect any significant single radio pulses down to fluence limits between 25 mJy ms and 18 Jy ms. Some observing epochs overlapped with times when X-ray bursts were detected. Radio images made on four days using the MeerKAT telescope revealed no point-like persistent or transient emission at the location of the magnetar. No transient or persistent optical emission was detected over seven days. Using the multi-colour MeerLICHT images combined with relations between DM, NH and reddening we constrain the distance to SGR J1935+2154, to be between 1.5 and 6.5 kpc. The upper limit is consistent with some other distance indicators and suggests that the April 28 burst is closer to two orders of magnitude less energetic than the least energetic FRBs. The lack of single-pulse radio detections shows that the single pulses detected over a range of fluences are either rare, or highly clustered, or both. It may also indicate that the magnetar lies somewhere between being radio-quiet and radio-loud in terms of its ability to produce radio emission efficiently., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We have used the central 44 antennas of the new 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope array to conduct a deep search for new pulsars in the core of nine globular clusters. This has led to the discovery of eight new millisecond pulsars in six different clusters. Two new binaries, 47 Tuc ac and 47 Tuc ad, are eclipsing "spiders", featuring compact orbits ($\lesssim 0.32$ days), very low-mass companions and regular occultations of their pulsed emission. The other three new binary pulsars (NGC 6624G, M62G, and Ter 5 an) are in wider ($> 0.7$ days) orbits, with companions that are likely to be white dwarfs or neutron stars. NGC 6624G has a large eccentricity of $e\simeq 0.38$, which enabled us to detect the rate of advance of periastron. This suggests that the system is massive, with a total mass of $M{\rm tot} = 2.65 \pm 0.07$ M$_{\odot}$. Likewise, for Ter 5 an, with $e \simeq 0.0066$, we obtain $M{\rm tot}= 2.97 \pm 0.52$ M$_{\odot}$. The other three new discoveries (NGC 6522D, NGC 6624H and NGC 6752F) are faint isolated pulsars. Finally, we have used the whole MeerKAT array and synthesized 288 beams, covering an area of $\sim2$ arcmin in radius around the center of NGC 6624. This has allowed us to localize many of the pulsars in the cluster, demonstrating the beamforming capabilities of the TRAPUM software backend and paving the way for the upcoming MeerKAT globular cluster pulsar survey., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. We describe the ongoing Relativistic Binary programme (RelBin), a part of the MeerTime large survey project with the MeerKAT radio telescope. RelBin is primarily focused on observations of relativistic effects in binary pulsars to enable measurements of neutron star masses and tests of theories of gravity. We selected 25 pulsars as an initial high priority list of targets based on their characteristics and observational history with other telescopes. In this paper, we provide an outline of the programme, present polarisation calibrated pulse profiles for all selected pulsars as a reference catalogue along with updated dispersion measures. We report Faraday rotation measures for 24 pulsars, twelve of which have been measured for the first time. More than a third of our selected pulsars show a flat position angle swing confirming earlier observations. We demonstrate the ability of the Rotating Vector Model (RVM), fitted here to seven binary pulsars, including the Double Pulsar (PSR J0737$-$3039A), to obtain information about the orbital inclination angle. We present a high time resolution light curve of the eclipse of PSR J0737$-$3039A by the companion's magnetosphere, a high-phase resolution position angle swing for PSR J1141$-$6545, an improved detection of the Shapiro delay of PSR J1811$-$2405, and pulse scattering measurements for PSRs J1227$-$6208, J1757$-$1854, and J1811$-$1736. Using the state-of-the-art SKA precursor, the MeerKAT radio telescope, we explore the limits to precision pulsar timing of millisecond pulsars achievable due to pulse stochasticity (jitter). We report new jitter measurements in 15 of the 29 pulsars in our sample and find that the levels of jitter can vary dramatically between them. For some, like the 2.2~ms pulsar PSR J2241--5236, we measure an implied jitter of just $\sim$ 4~ns/hr, while others like the 3.9~ms PSR J0636--3044 are limited to $\sim$ 100 ns/hr. While it is well known that jitter plays a central role to limiting the precision measurements of arrival times for high signal-to-noise ratio observations, its role in the measurement of dispersion measure (DM) has not been reported, particularly in broad-band observations. Using the exceptional sensitivity of MeerKAT, we explored this on the bright millisecond pulsar PSR J0437--4715 by exploring the DM of literally every pulse. We found that the derived single pulse DMs vary by typically 0.0085 cm$^{-3}$ pc from the mean, and that the best DM estimate is limited by the differential pulse jitter across the band. We postulate that all millisecond pulsars will have their own limit on DM precision which can only be overcome with longer integrations. Using high-time resolution filterbank data of 9 $\mu$s, we also present a statistical analysis of single pulse phenomenology. Finally, we discuss optimization strategies for the MeerKAT pulsar timing program and its role in the context of the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA)., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The Thousand Pulsar Array (TPA) project currently monitors about 500 pulsars with the sensitive MeerKAT radio telescope by using subarrays to observe multiple sources simultaneously. Here we define the adopted observing strategy, which guarantees that each target is observed long enough to obtain a high fidelity pulse profile, thereby reaching a sufficient precision of a simple pulse shape parameter. This precision is estimated from the contribution of the system noise of the telescope, and the pulse-to-pulse variability of each pulsar, which we quantify under some simplifying assumptions. We test the assumptions and choice of model parameters using data from the MeerKAT 64-dish array, Lovell and Parkes telescopes. We demonstrate that the observing times derived from our method produce high fidelity pulse profiles that meet the needs of the TPA in studying pulse shape variability and pulsar timing. Our method can also be used to compare strategies for observing large numbers of pulsars with telescopes capable of forming multiple subarray configurations. We find that using two 32-dish MeerKAT subarrays is the most efficient strategy for the TPA project. We also find that the ability to observe in different array configurations will become increasingly important for large observing programmes using the Square Kilometre Array telescope., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Pulsar timing array projects measure the pulse arrival times of millisecond pulsars for the primary purpose of detecting nanohertz-frequency gravitational waves. The measurements include contributions from a number of astrophysical and instrumental processes, which can either be deterministic or stochastic. It is necessary to develop robust statistical and physical models for these noise processes because incorrect models diminish sensitivity and may cause a spurious gravitational wave detection. Here we characterise noise processes for the 26 pulsars in the second data release of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array using Bayesian inference. In addition to well-studied noise sources found previously in pulsar timing array data sets such as achromatic timing noise and dispersion measure variations, we identify new noise sources including time-correlated chromatic noise that we attribute to variations in pulse scattering. We also identify "exponential dip" events in four pulsars, which we attribute to magnetospheric effects as evidenced by pulse profile shape changes observed for three of the pulsars. This includes an event in PSR J1713$+$0747, which had previously been attributed to interstellar propagation. We present noise models to be used in searches for gravitational waves. We outline a robust methodology to evaluate the performance of noise models and identify unknown signals in the data. We present observations of 35 high spin-down energy radio pulsars using the MeerKAT telescope. Polarisation profiles and associated parameters are also presented. We derive the geometry for a selection of pulsars which show interpulse emission. We point out that, in several cases, these radio pulsars should also be seen in $\gamma$-rays but that improved radio timing is required to aid the high-energy detection. We discuss the relationship between the width of the radio profile and its high-energy detectability. Finally, we reflect on the correlation between the spin-down energy and the radio polarisation fraction and the implications this may have for $\gamma$-ray emission., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by the MNRAS

The millisecond pulsar J1823-3021A is a very active giant pulse emitter in the globular cluster NGC 6624. New observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope have revealed 14350 giant pulses over 5 hours of integration time, with an average wait time of about 1 second between giant pulses. The giant pulses occur in phases compatible with the ordinary radio emission, follow a power-law distribution with an index of -2.63 $\pm$ 0.02 and contribute 4 percent of the total integrated flux. The spectral index of the giant pulses follows a Gaussian distribution centered around -1.9 with a standard deviation of 0.6 and is on average flatter than the integrated emission, which has a spectral index of -2.81 $\pm$ 0.02. The waiting times between the GPs are accurately described by a Poissonian distribution, suggesting that the time of occurrence of a GP is independent from the times of occurrence of other GPs. 76 GPs show multiple peaks within the same rotation, a rate that is also compatible with the mutual independence of the GP times of occurrence. We studied the polarization properties of the giant pulses finding, on average, linear polarization only at the 1 percent level and circular polarization at the 3 percent level, similar to the polarization percentages of the total integrated emission. In 4 cases it was possible to measure the RM of the GPs which are highly variable and, in two cases, is inconsistent with the mean RM of the total integrated pulsar signal., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 8 Pages, 11 Figures

Gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars encode information about nuclear matter at extreme densities, inaccessible by laboratory experiments. The late inspiral is influenced by the presence of tides, which depend on the neutron star equation of state. Neutron star mergers are expected to often produce rapidly-rotating remnant neutron stars that emit gravitational waves. These will provide clues to the extremely hot post-merger environment. This signature of nuclear matter in gravitational waves contains most information in the 2-4 kHz frequency band, which is outside of the most sensitive band of current detectors. We present the design concept and science case for a neutron star extreme matter observatory (NEMO): a gravitational-wave interferometer optimized to study nuclear physics with merging neutron stars. The concept uses high circulating laser power, quantum squeezing and a detector topology specifically designed to achieve the high-frequency sensitivity necessary to probe nuclear matter using gravitational waves. Above one kHz, the proposed strain sensitivity is comparable to full third-generation detectors at a fraction of the cost. Such sensitivity changes expected event rates for detection of post-merger remnants from approximately one per few decades with two A+ detectors to a few per year, and potentially allows for the first gravitational-wave observations of supernovae, isolated neutron stars, and other exotica., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA

The SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts ran from 2014 April to 2019 August, covering a large fraction of the southern hemisphere at mid- to high-galactic latitudes, and consisting of 9-minute pointings taken with the 20-cm multibeam receiver on the Parkes Radio Telescope. Data up to 2017 September 21 have been searched using standard Fourier techniques, single-pulse searches, and Fast Folding Algorithm searches. We present 19 new discoveries, bringing the total to 27 discoveries in the programme, and we report the results of follow-up timing observations at Parkes for 26 of these pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar PSR J1421-4409; the faint, highly-modulated, slow pulsar PSR J1646-1910; and the nulling pulsar PSR J1337-4441.
