Background Context: Psychological comorbidities are important prognostic factors for low back pain (LBP). To develop improved treatment paradigms, it is first necessary to characterize and determine current patterns of treatment in this population.Purpose: Identify how comorbid depression or anxiety in patients with LBP is related to use of healthcare resources.Study Design/setting: Retrospective cohort study using electronic health records from outpatient offices at a large multisite academic medical center.Patient Sample: Data from 513,088 unique patients seen between January 2010 and July 2020 (58.0% female, 52.6±19.5 years) with a diagnosis of LBP, indicated by predetermined ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes.Outcome Measures: Average self-reported pain scores, absolute differences and unadjusted risk ratios to compare opioid use, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, advanced imaging orders, spinal injections, and back surgeries between cohorts.Methods: Clinical characteristics and data regarding use of healthcare resources were extracted from the electronic health record. Clinical features and patterns in healthcare utilization were determined for patients with depression or anxiety compared to those without.Results: Depression or anxiety was coded for 21.4% of patients at first LBP visit. Those with depression or anxiety were more likely to be on opioids (unadjusted risk ratio: 1.22, CI: [1.22,1.23]), go to the emergency department (1.31 [1.30-1.33]), be hospitalized (1.15 [1.13, 1.17]), receive advanced imaging (1.09 [1.08, 1.11]), receive an epidural steroid injection (1.16 [1.15, 1.18]), and less likely to have back surgery (0.74 [0.72, 0.77]). Differences in pain scores for those with depression/anxiety compared to those without were not clinically significant.Conclusions: Depression/anxiety is associated with increased use of healthcare resources, and is not associated with clinically meaningful elevated pain scores. Postural control impairments have been reported in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Balance relies on the integration of multisensory cues, a process that requires attention. The purpose of this study was to determine if the influence of attention demands on sensory integration abilities relevant for balance partially contributes to postural control impairments in ASD. Young adults with ASD (N = 24) and neurotypical participants (N = 24) were exposed to sensory perturbations during standing. An established dual-task paradigm was used, requiring participants to maintain balance in these sensory challenging environments and to perform auditory information processing tasks (simple reaction time task and choice reaction time task). Balance was assessed using sway magnitude and sway speed, and attention demands were evaluated based on the response time in the auditory tasks. While young adults with ASD were able to maintain balance in destabilizing sensory conditions, they were more challenged (greater sway speed) than their neurotypical counterparts. Additionally, when exposed for an extended amount of time (3 min) to the most challenging sensory condition included in this study, adults with ASD exhibited a reduced ability to adapt their postural control strategies (sway speed was minimally reduced), demonstrating a postural inflexibility pattern in ASD compared to neurotypical counterparts. Finally, the impact of performing an auditory information processing task on balance and the dual-task cost on information processing (response time) was similar in both groups. The North Caribou terrane of the western Superior Province attained continental thickness (~35 km) by 2997 Ma. It records a subsequent 300 million years history of continental fragmentation, arc magmatism, and terrane accretion. At Lake Winnipeg the ~2978 Ma Lewis–Storey quartzite–komatiite–iron formation assemblage marks Mesoarchean breakup. Unlike the relatively continuous 2980–2735 Ma stratigraphic record of the Red Lake and Birch–Uchi greenstone belts to the east, little of this interval is recorded at Lake Winnipeg. Rather, two belts of younger, juvenile rocks are tectonically juxtaposed: the Black Island assemblage of isotopically depleted, 2723 Ma basalt, and calc-alkaline andesite; and Rice Lake greenstone belt of basalt, calc-alkaline andesite, and dacite (2731–2729 Ma). Collectively these terranes represent a short-lived island-arc–back-arc system that docked with the southwestern North Caribou margin along a northwest-trending, dextral, transpressive, D1 suture. This zone is marked by the highly deformed coarse clastic Guano Island sequence (<2728 Ma) that contains detritus of North Caribou affinity and is interpreted as a strike-slip basin deposit. Younger clastic sequences, including the Hole River (<2708 Ma), San Antonio (<2705 Ma), and English River (<2704 Ma) assemblages, occur in east–west belts that may have been deposited during the terminal collision (D2, D3) between the North Caribou terrane and continental crust of the Winnipeg River terrane to the south. Several terrane docking events within a framework of north-dipping subduction and continental arc magmatism appear necessary to explain structural and stratigraphic relationships in the 2735–2700 Ma interval. The hanging wall to the Flin Flon, Callinan, and Triple 7 volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits of the Flin Flon district is composed of the Hidden and Louis formations. The contact between these formations is marked by mafic tuff that represents a hiatus in effusive volcanism. The formations form a composite volcanic edifice that was erupted and grew within a large, volcanic–tectonic subsidence structure (hosting the deposits) that developed within a rifted-arc environment. The formations are evidence of resurgent effusive volcanism and subsidence following a hiatus in volcanism marked by ore formation since they consist of dominantly basaltic flows, sills, and volcaniclastic rocks with subordinate basaltic andesite and rhyodacitic flows and volcaniclastic rocks. The Hidden formation is interpreted to represent a small shield volcano and the Louis formation a separate shield volcano that developed on its flank. Both the Hidden and Louis volcanic edifices were constructed by continuous, low-volume eruptions of pillow lava. A gradual change from a dominantly extensional environment during the formation of the footwall Flin Flon formation to a progressively more dominant convergent environment during the emplacement of the hanging wall suggests that the Hidden and Louis formations are unlikely to host significant volcanogenic massive sulphide-type mineralization. However, synvolcanic structures in the formations define structural corridors that project downwards into the footwall where they encompass massive sulphide mineralization, indicating their control on ore formation, longevity,and reactivation as magma and fluid pathways during the growth of the Hidden and Louis volcanoes. The study of lithology, geochronology, and structure in the Oxford–Stull terrane, in particular in the Gods Lake Narrows area, has led to the recognition of three distinct supracrustal sequences: ~2.8–2.9 Ga volcanic rocks; a ~2720 Ma fault-bounded package of volcanics and sandstones; and ~2705 Ma conglomerate and alkaline volcanic rocks of the Oxford Lake Group. Detrital zircon as old as 3647 Ma is present in the Oxford Lake Group. An early generation of folding and shearing occurred prior to deposition of the Oxford Lake Group and was probably synchronous with emplace ment of 2721 Ma tonalite dykes. The second generation of deformation caused south-over-north thrusting of volcanic rocks over the Oxford Lake Group. The youngest fabric resulted from east-southeast-trending, dextral, south-over-north shearing. The youngest rock dated in the area is the 2668 ± 1 Ma Magill Lake pluton, which records crustal melting following deformation. The pattern of sedimentation and deformation in this area is similar to but slightly older than that found in the southern half of the Superior Province, which shows a southward-younging diachroneity. The south-dipping north-vergent shear zones observed in the area contrast with dominantly north-dipping south-vergent structures observed and interpreted south of the North Caribou superterrane (NCS). The limited size of the study area precludes any strongly based large-scale tectonic interpretation; however, data and observations from the Gods Lake Narrows area are most easily accommodated in a model where the NCS served as a nucleus onto which other terranes were accreted and both the northern and southern margins of the NCS were Andean-type continental margins with opposite subduction polarities. A correlation chart showing the evolution of the Manitoba–Saskatchewan segment of the Paleoproterozoic Trans-Hudson Orogen (THO) has been constructed based on available geochronological and isotopic data. Geological, petrological, geochemical, and structural data have also been incorporated into the correlation chart to provide finer detail and to allow comparison of specific tectonic events. The chart also emphasizes that the bounding Archean cratons (Superior, Hearne, Sask) have been significantly affected by Paleoproterozoic events, and it is hoped that this chart will also facilitate comparison with other Paleoproterozoic orogens in North America and beyond.
