Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is implicated in the development and maintenance of several psychopathological conditions. Non-clinical individuals with high autistic traits may develop anxiety disorders and depressive symptoms. Here, we investigated the relationships of autistic traits with AS dimensions and depression, considering sex. We referred to the two-factor model of the autism spectrum quotient to distinguish social and non-social autistic traits and assessed 345 university students on AS and depression scales. Results showed that only social autistic traits predicted general AS and anxiety-related concerns regarding social and cognitive domains. The present results emphasize the need of assessing multiple domains of anxiety in individuals on the autistic spectrum, differentiating social and non-social traits.

In two studies, we used the Gottschaldt’s Hidden Figure Test (GHFT) for assessing figure disembedding ability in children aged 7–11. Study 1 demonstrated in a large sample of typically developing children that GHFT accuracy and time scores differed across age groups, without sex and socioeconomic differences. Thus, we provided normative data only taking into account children’s age. In Study 2, GHFT normative values were used to assess children with autism, who were also compared with a closely age-matched group of typical controls. Children with autism achieved time scores at or above the 50th centile and significantly differed from the controls for time score. The GHFT seems a valuable tool for defining the cognitive profile of children with autism.

In the present study, we were interested to investigate how autistic traits (including systemizing and empathy) and academic degree influence individuals’ visuospatial abilities. To this end, 352 university students completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), the Empathy Quotient, the Systemizing Quotient (SQ) and visuospatial tests measuring figure disembedding and mental rotation of two-dimensional figures. Engineering-design students (architecture and engineering) were the most accurate in disembedding and mentally rotating figures, followed by students of physical sciences (computer science, chemistry, physics, etc.) and fact-based humanities (languages, classics, law); biological (psychology and neuroscience, etc.) and systems-based social scientists (economics and commerce) were the least accurate. Engineering-design students also showed higher SQ scores with respect to the other four academic degree subjects, with students of biological sciences showing lower SQ scores. Importantly, results from a path analysis revealed that SQ (but not AQ) exerted an indirect effect on figure disembedding and mental rotations through the influence of the academic degree. Thus, the present findings reveal shadydifferences in systemizing degree and visuospatial performance withinsystemizing-based degree subjects.Implications for education are discussed.

Background: We tested whether the tendency to worry could affect psychological responses to quarantine by capitalizing on the opportunity of having collected data before the COVID-19 outbreak on measures of worry, anxiety, and trait mindfulness in a group of university students. Methods: Twenty-five participants completed self-report measures assessing worry (Penn State Worry Questionnaire, PSWQ), anxiety (Anxiety Sensitivity Index, ASI-3), and trait mindfulness (Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, MAAS) at T0 (pre-lockdown, 4 November 2019&ndash, 17 February 2020) and T1 (at the end of lockdown, 26 April&ndash, 30 April 2020). We compared assessments at the two time points in the whole sample and in high and low worriers (defined at T0 by scores on PSWQ respectively above and below 1.5 SD from mean of the Italian normative sample). Outcomes: High worriers showed at T1 a significant increase of anxiety sensitivity and fear of mental health in comparison to low worriers. Moreover, in the whole sample, at T1 trait mindfulness was inversely related to worry and fear of mental health. Interpretation: A valuable approach to support individuals experiencing anxiety related to the COVID-19 outbreak could be represented by mindfulness-based interventions improving the ability to focus attention and awareness on the present moment.

The gas-phase formation and spectroscopic characteristics of ethanimine have been re-investigated as a paradigmatic case illustrating the accuracy of state-of-the-art quantum-chemical (QC) methodologies in the field of astrochemistry. According to our computations, the reaction between the amidogen, NH, and ethyl, C$_2$H$_5$, radicals is very fast, close to the gas-kinetics limit. Although the main reaction channel under conditions typical of the interstellar medium leads to methanimine and the methyl radical, the predicted amount of the two E,Z stereoisomers of ethanimine is around 10%. State-of-the-art QC and kinetic models lead to a [E-CH$_3$CHNH]/[Z-CH$_3$CHNH] ratio of ca. 1.4, slightly higher than the previous computations, but still far from the value determined from astronomical observations (ca. 3). An accurate computational characterization of the molecular structure, energetics, and spectroscopic properties of the E and Z isomers of ethanimine combined with millimeter-wave measurements up to 300 GHz, allows for predicting the rotational spectrum of both isomers up to 500 GHz, thus opening the way toward new astronomical observations., 21 pages, 5 figures

Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients may experience neuropsychiatric symptoms, including depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, psychosis, as well as behavioral and cognitive symptoms during all the different stages of the illness. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy has proven to be successful in controlling the motor symptoms of PD and its possible correlation with the occurrence or worsening of neuropsychiatric symptoms has been reported. We aimed to assess the neuropsychiatric symptoms of 14 PD patients before and after one year of Subthalamic Nucleus (STN)-DBS and to correlate the possible changes to the lead placement and to the total electrical energy delivered. We assessed PD motor symptoms, depression, anxiety, apathy, impulsivity, and suicidality using clinician- and/or self-administered rating scales and correlated the results to the lead position using the Medtronic SuretuneTM software and to the total electrical energy delivered (TEED). At the 12-month follow-up, the patients showed a significant improvement in PD symptoms on the UPDRS (Unified Parkinson’s disease Rating Scale) (−38.5%; p < 0.001) and in anxiety on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) (−29%; p = 0.041), with the most significant reduction in the physiological anxiety subscore (−36.26%; p < 0.001). A mild worsening of impulsivity was detected on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) (+9%; p = 0.048), with the greatest increase in the attentional impulsiveness subscore (+13.60%; p = 0.050). No statistically significant differences were found for the other scales. No correlation was found between TEED and scales’ scores, while the positioning of the stimulating electrodes in the different portions of the STN was shown to considerably influence the outcome, with more anterior and/or medial lead position negatively influencing psychiatric symptoms.

IntroductionEndonasal endoscopic surgery has changed the treatment perspectives for different lesions of the hypothalamic–pituitary region. The metastases of the hypothalamic–pituitary region represent 0.4% of all intracranial metastatic tumors and account for only 1.8% of surgically managed pituitary lesions. The aim of tshis study is to describe a single-center institutional experience with 13 cases of hypothalamic–pituitary metastasis focused on presurgical workup, the evolution of the surgical technique, and postsurgical management according to our protocols, showing effects on progression-free and overall survival rates for this relatively uncommon location.Material and MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the whole series of patients that received the endoscopic endonasal approach at the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Naples “Federico II” undergoing surgery from January 1997 to December 2021. We identified 13 cases whose pathology reports revealed a metastatic lesion. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the Kaplan–Meier survival function and assess for log-rank differences in survival based on gender, surgical treatment, and postoperative therapy (p-value ResultsThe pathology report disclosed lung adenocarcinoma (six cases, 46%), breast adenocarcinoma (two cases, 15.4%), clear cell renal carcinoma (one case, 7%), melanoma (one case, 7%), colorectal adenocarcinoma (one case, 7%), uterine cervix carcinoma (one case, 7%), and follicular thyroid carcinoma (one case, 7%). A standard endoscopic endonasal approach was performed in 10 patients (76.9%), while an extended endonasal procedure was performed in only three cases (23%). Biopsy was the surgical choice in five patients with infiltrative and invasive lesions and a poor performance status (38%), while in the cases where neurovascular decompression was necessary, a subtotal resection was achieved in five patients (38%) and partial resection in three patients (23%). Recovery of visual field defect was observed in six of seven patients with visual loss (85.7%), improvement of oculomotor nerve palsy occurred in four of seven patients with this defect (57.1%), while the impairment of oculomotor palsy was observed in three patients (42.9%). Visual function was stable in the other patients. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 14 and 18 months, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in PFS and OS in patients who underwent adjuvant radiotherapy (p=0.019 is referred to OS and p=0.017 to PFS, respectively; p-value = 0.02).ConclusionsThe endoscopic endonasal approach is a viable approach for the management of hypothalamic–pituitary metastases as this surgery provides an adequate opportunity to obtain tissue sample and neurovascular decompression, both being crucial for continuing the integrated adjuvant therapy protocols.

The isomerization of hydrogen cyanide to hydrogen isocyanide on icy grain surfaces is investigated by an accurate composite method (jun-Cheap) rooted in the coupled cluster ansatz and by density functional approaches. After benchmarking density functional predictions of both geometries and reaction energies against jun-Cheap results for the relatively small model system HCN -- (H2O)2 the best performing DFT methods are selected. A large cluster containing 20 water molecules is then employed within a QM/QM$'$ approach to include a realistic environment mimicking the surface of icy grains. Our results indicate that four water molecules are directly involved in a proton relay mechanism, which strongly reduces the activation energy with respect to the direct hydrogen transfer occurring in the isolated molecule. Further extension of the size of the cluster up to 192 water molecules in the framework of a three-layer QM/QM'/MM model has a negligible effect on the energy barrier ruling the isomerization. Computation of reaction rates by transition state theory indicates that on icy surfaces the isomerization of HNC to HCN could occur quite easily even at low temperatures thanks to the reduced activation energy that can be effectively overcome by tunneling., Accepted on JCTC

Interoception, the sense of the physiological state of the body, and perspective-taking, the ability to take another’s point of view, are two fundamental components contributing to our perception and interaction with the external world. However, whether the perception of our inner body influences how we perceive the external world and other people remains poorly understood. Here, we review recent behavioural and neuroimaging evidence investigating the links between dimensions of interoception (i.e., accuracy, sensibility and awareness) and perspective-taking (i.e., affective, cognitive and visual). So far, only a limited subset of these dimensions has been investigated together and the results suggest that interoceptive abilities may only interact with perspective-taking when embodied mental transformations are required. Furthermore, mainly the emotional aspects of perspective-taking are related to interoception, influencing the ability to empathise with others. Future research should systematically investigate the links between all dimensions of interoception and perspective-taking to provide full understanding of the specific role interoception has on how we perceive the world and take another’s point of view.

People can decide whether the image of a hand represents a left or a right one. The laterality judgment mainly implies mentally imaging own hand movement (motor simulation) if the stimulus represents a palm, or analysing visual cues, as hand asymmetry, if the stimulus reproduces a dorsum. Here, by capitalizing on evidence underscoring the key role of thumb-palm complex in motor dexterity of human hand, we hypothesise that activation of motor or visual processes when judging hand laterality is due to the different relevance of palm-thumb and dorsum-thumb combinations to hand action. To test this thumb-anchored strategy, in a laterality judgment experiment, we concurrently manipulated the thumb position (flexed or extended) with respect to palm and dorsum, and the human likeness of the hand shape (influencing the salience of the thumb with respect to the hand shape). The main results demonstrated that viewing the flexed thumb from palm or dorsum elicited motor simulation, while viewing the extended thumb activated motor simulation when combined with palm but not dorsum. The present data highlight the pivotal role of the thumb in hand laterality judgments, consistent with its key role in human in-hand manipulation.

The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCF) is a widely used neuropsychological test for the evaluation of drawing disorders in different clinical populations, and, in particular, in persons with neurodevelopmental disorders. The aim of the present study is to provide normative data for ROCF copying (ROCF-Direct copy) and drawing from memory (ROCF-Immediate recall) in Italian-speaking children. The sample consisted of 348 children (147 males and 199 females), aged 7–11years, recruited from elementary schools in Southern Italy. Normative data were gathered from 312 participants fulfilling the inclusion criteria, and estimated centiles were obtained according to the LMS method providing normalized growth centile standards. Results showed a significant effect of age on performance in both tasks, with a steady increase of drawing accuracy, whereas participants’ gender and mean level of parental education did not exert any significant effect. Thus, normative data were stratified by age, and percentile scores were provided allowing a practical use of the ROCF for the clinical evaluation of drawing abilities in both typical and atypical children.

Growing evidence suggests that empathy is a relevant psychological trait to face the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but at the present very little is known on whether this multi-dimensional construct has been affected by the pandemic outbreak differently in its separate components. Here, we aimed at filling this gap by capitalizing on the opportunity of having collected data from different self-report measures and cognitive tasks assessing the main dimensions of empathy immediately before the beginning of the global pandemic and about one year later. The results showed a detrimental impact of the pandemic outbreak on empathic social skills but not on both cognitive (perspective-taking) and emotional empathy that instead significantly improved. Thus, reduced empathic social skills could be a weakness to be targeted in psychological interventions to help people cope with the mental health challenges related to COVID-19 pandemic, whereas the ability of understanding another’s mental states and emotions could represent a strength in dealing with the current long-lasting crisis.

The recycling of CO2 back into chemicals via photo-electrochemical cells represents a viable route to mitigate the global climate crisis of current days. In this paper we focus on the copper-iron delafossite oxide, CuFeO2, which has been proven to have suitable physico-chemical properties to photo-catalyze the carbon dioxide reduction to formic acid. The specific electronic and structural features that allow activating the highly stable CO2 molecule are dissected by exploiting state-of-the art first principles methods. The effects of surface oxygen vacancies as well as the different roles of copper and iron on the adsorption and the activation of carbon dioxide at the CuFeO2 most stable surface are analyzed. These results highlight the key role of oxygen defects in favoring the CO2 adsorption and in promoting the formation of a radical anion CO2 − or a carbonate-like adsorbate so providing the scientific grounds for implementing new rational design strategies and improving the performances of CuFeO2-based photoelectrodes for CO2 reduction.

Mild cognitive impairment associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) is a risk factor for the development of dementia. Despite the importance of early identification of mild cognitive impairment in PD, its prevalence and clinical correlates are still debated. The present meta-analysis provides a robust estimate of prevalence rate of mild cognitive impairment in PD according to the Movement Disorder Society clinical criteria and to explore the differences between PD patients with and without mild cognitive impairment in demographic, clinical, and neuropsychiatric features. A systematic literature search was performed up to April 2019 using PsycInfo (PROQUEST), PubMed, and Scopus. From 4706 titles and abstracts, 41 studies were selected (n = 7053 patients). Pooled mild cognitive impairment prevalence was 40% on a total sample of 7053 PD patients (95% confidence interval = 36–44; Q = 490.14, P < 0.0001; I2 = 91.84%) with a higher frequency for the multiple domain subtype (31%; 95% confidence interval = 23–41, Q = 93.24; P < 0.0001; I2 = 92.49%). Meta-regression analysis revealed that stage of PD moderate prevalence estimates of mild cognitive impairment (β = 2.80; P = 0.008). Mild cognitive impairment in PD was associated with older age, lower education, longer disease duration, higher levodopa equivalent daily dose, more severe motor symptoms, and postural instability/gait difficulty motor subtype, poorer quality of life, higher levels of apathy, and depression. The present meta-analysis indicated that mild cognitive impairment in PD is a frequent cognitive status deserving to be early detected by means of standardized cognitive assessments in clinical practice. © 2019 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Craniopharyngiomas are benign disembryogenetic tumors accounting for the 2–5% of all intracranial tumors and they present high rates of recurrence even after radical resection and surgical treatment of these latter cases is more challenging.

Here we report the first theoretical characterization of the interface between the CuGaO2 delafossite oxide and the carboxylic (–COOH) and phosphonic acid (–PO3H2) anchoring groups. The promising use of delafossites as effective alternative to nickel oxide in p-type DSSC is still limited by practical difficulties in sensitizing the delafossite surface. Thus, this work provides atomistic insights on the structure and energetics of all the possible interactions between the anchoring functional groups and the CuGaO2 surface species, including the effects of the Mg doping and of the solvent medium. Our results highlight the presence of a strong selectivity toward the monodentate binding mode on surface Ga atoms for both the carboxylic and phosphonic acid groups. Since the binding modes have a strong influence on the hole injection thermodynamics, these findings have direct implications for further development of delafossite based p-type DSSCs.

Background: Recent evidence has converged in showing that the lateral occipitotemporal cortex is over-recruited during implicit motor imagery in elderly and in patients with neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson&rsquo, s disease. These data suggest that when automatically imaging movements, individuals exploit neural resources in the visual areas to compensate for the decline in activating motor representations. Thus, the occipitotemporal cortex could represent a cortical target of non-invasive brain stimulation combined with cognitive training to enhance motor imagery performance. Here, we aimed at shedding light on the role of the left and right lateral occipitotemporal cortex in implicit motor imagery. Methods: We applied online, high-frequency, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left and right lateral occipitotemporal cortex while healthy right-handers judged the laterality of hand images. Results: With respect to the sham condition, left hemisphere stimulation specifically reduced accuracy in judging the laterality of right-hand images. Instead, the hallmark of motor simulation, i.e., the biomechanical effect, was never influenced by rTMS. Conclusions: The lateral occipitotemporal cortex seems to be involved in mental representation of the dominant hand, at least in right-handers, but not in reactivating sensorimotor information during simulation. These findings provide useful hints for developing combined brain stimulation and behavioural trainings to improve motor imagery.

Behavioural evidence suggest that males outperform females in mentally transforming objects, whereas whether sex differences exist in mentally transforming body part images (implicit motor imagery) is an open issue. The aim of the present study was to fill this gap testing performance of 360 healthy participants on a classical behavioural measure of implicit motor imagery: the hand laterality task. Participants had to judge handedness of hand images portrayed from back and palm and presented in different spatial orientations. Two main findings emerged. First, males were significantly faster than females in judging hands portrayed from palm, in particular left palms at 0°, 90° and 180° orientation, whereas females were faster than males in judging backs, in particular left and right backs at 0° and the left back at 90°. Second, both males and females showed a significant biomechanical effect (faster responses for hands portrayed in medial vs. lateral positions) while judging palms, albeit the effect was stronger in males, whereas only females showed a significant biomechanical effect when judging backs. Thus, males and females seem to differently exploit motor simulation processes during mental transformation of hand images depending on a specific familiarity with body parts portrayed from different views. This result might be taken into account when tailoring motor imagery tasks in applied contexts, as motor rehabilitation.

In previous decades, extensive and disfiguring transfacial and/or transcranial approaches were used to reach the sellar and parasellar areas. However, these surgical routes were burdened by severe complications and high mortality rates. Recently, the development of endoscopic endonasal techniques has revolutionized the surgical strategies for approaching the sella and adjacent areas and increased the development of transsphenoidal surgery. With these techniques, surgeons have been able to overcome the visual limitations of the open surgical approaches and access areas previously hidden from view. After the contributions of the Pittsburgh duo, Carrau and Jho, pioneers of pure endoscopic surgery, our school began to implement this technique, introducing technical innovations and variations, describing the anatomical details and defining new routes, and playing a key role in its widespread clinical application.
