Background: Hypospadias with lichen sclerosus (LS) poses surgical challenges due to lack of materials for urethral reconstruction and coverage and the limited number of reports on this clinical condition., Objectives: To report surgical strategies and outcomes for primary and redo hypospadias patients with LS., Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational descriptive study with 31 patients with primary/redo hypospadias and LS between 2013 and 2023. Of these patients, 9 had primary hypospadias with 7 distal types and 2 proximal types, and 22 were redo patients. Nineteen of the 31 patients underwent various surgical techniques, and 12 underwent the oral mucosa onlay procedure (OMOP). Postoperative uroflowmetry, hypospadias objective scoring evaluation (HOSE), and complications were evaluated., Results: For primary distal hypospadias with LS-affected skin, five patients underwent circumcision; these patients had normal postoperative urinary flow, and only one patient had an inconspicuous penis after surgery. For the patients with primary proximal hypospadias with an LS-affected urethra, one patient required perineal urethrostomy following a modified Koyanagi procedure for recurrent stricture; the other patient underwent two-stage transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty with no postoperative lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and satisfactory aesthetic scores. In two remaining cases of primary distal hypospadias with meatus/urethral LS, no LUTS or postoperative complications occurred following meatoplasty/circumcision and penile basal fixation. During reoperations, compared with those of patients who underwent other redo procedures, twelve patients who underwent OMOP had better Qmax and uroflowmetry (p = 0.002) and higher HOSE scores (p = 0.01)., Conclusions: For primary hypospadias patients with LS, enhanced exposure of the penile shaft and glans may benefit distal hypospadias, whereas staged surgery may be suitable for proximal hypospadias. The oral mucosa is favored for urethral augmentation in patients with redo hypospadias complicated with LS, and the OMOP can address neourethra coverage effectively., (© 2024 American Society of Andrology and European Academy of Andrology.)

Background: Carboxylesterase (CarE) is a major class of enzyme involved in the detoxification of toxic xenobiotics in various insect species. Previous work has shown that the carboxylesterase gene CarE001G found in Helicoverpa armigera is more active and can metabolize synthesized pyrethroids, such as β-cypermethrin, one of the commonly used commercial insecticides for lepidopteran pest control. In addition, CarE001G is very special as it has a very specific glycine-rich region located adjacent to its C-terminal. But whether mutations in this unique sequence can change the biochemistry and function of CarE001G are unknown., Results: In this study, four variants of CarE001G with different deletions in the glycine-rich region were obtained and functionally expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant proteins were purified and confirmed by Western blot and mass spectrometry analyses. These mutant enzymes showed high catalytic efficiency toward the model substrate α-naphthyl acetate. Inhibition study showed that β-cypermethrin had relatively strong inhibition on CarE activities. In vitro metabolism assay showed that the mutant enzymes significantly enhanced their metabolic activities toward β-cypermethrin with specific activities between 4.0 and 5.6 nmol L -1 min -1 mg -1 protein. Molecular docking analyses consistently demonstrated that deletion mutations in the glycine-rich region may facilitate the anchoring of the β-cypermethrin molecule in the active binding pocket of the mutant enzymes., Conclusion: The data show that deletion mutations can cause qualitative change in the capacity of CarEs in the detoxification of β-cypermethrin. This indicates that deletion mutations in the glycine-rich region may have the potential to cause synthesized pyrethroid (SP) resistance in H. armigera in the future. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Insect carboxylesterases are major enzymes involved in metabolism of xenobiotics including insecticides. Two carboxylesterase genes, CarE001A and CarE001H , were cloned from the destructive agricultural pest Helicoverpa armigera . Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that CarE001A and CarE001H were predominantly expressed in fat body and midgut, respectively; developmental expression analyses found that the expression levels of both CarEs were significantly higher in fifth-instar larvae than in other life stages. Recombinant CarE001A and CarE001H expressed in the Escherichia coli exhibited high enzymatic activity toward α-naphthyl acetate. Inhibition assays showed that organophosphates had strong inhibition on CarEs activity compared to pyrethroids. Metabolism assays indicated that CarE001A and CarE001H were able to metabolize β-cypermethrin and λ - cyhalothrin. Homology modeling and molecular docking analyses demonstrated that β-cypermethrin could fit nicely into the active pocket of both carboxylesterases. These results suggested that CarE001A and CarE001H could play important roles in the detoxification of pyrehtroids in H. armigera .

Carboxylesterases (CarEs) are a major class of detoxification enzymes involved in insecticide resistance in various insect species. In this study, a novel CarE 001G was isolated from the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera, one of the most destructive agricultural insect pests. The open reading frame of 001G has 2244 nucleotides and putatively encodes 747 amino acid residues. The deduced CarE possessed the highly conserved catalytic triads(Ser-Glu-His) and pentapeptide motifs (Gly-X-Ser-X-Gly), suggesting 001G is biologically active. The truncated 001G was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli, and the recombinant proteins were purified and tested. The enzyme kinetic assay showed the purified proteins could catalyze two model substrates, α-naphthyl acetate and β-naphthyl acetate, with a kcat of 8.8 and 2.3 s -1 , a Km of 9.6 and 16.2 μM, respectively. The inhibition study with pyrethroid, organophosphate and neonicotinoid insecticides showed different inhibition profile against the purified CarE. The HPLC assay demonstrated that the purified proteins were able to metabolize β-cypermethrin, λ-cyhalothrin and fenvalerate insecticides, exhibiting respective specific activities of 1.7, 1.4 and 0.5 nM/min/mg protein. However, the purified proteins were not able to metabolize the chlorpyrifos, parathion-methyl, paraoxon-ethyl and imidacloprid. The modeling and docking analyses consistently demonstrated that the pyrethroid molecule fits snugly into the catalytic pocket of the CarE 001G. Objective: To evaluate the relationships between lymph node ratio (LNR, the ratio of positive lymph nodes in excised axillary lymph nodes) and disease-free survival (DFS) by comparing with traditional absolute positive lymph node number (pN classification) for prediction of breast cancer (BC) progrnosis., Methods and Patients: We retrospectively reviewed patients who received comprehensive therapy in Department of Breast Surgery, Hubei Cancer Hospital, China from Jan 2002 to Dec 2006 (Group A), and Department of Breast and Thyroid Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, China from Jun 2008 to May 2012 (Group B). Patients were allocated to low-risk (≤0.20), intermediate-risk (> 0.20 but ≤ 0.65), high-risk (>0.65) groups by LNR. The primary endpoint was 5-DFS., Results: A total of 294 patients were included in our study. LNR was verified as a negative prognostic factor for DFS (P= 0.002 in Group A, P< 0.0001 in Group B). Then we found the effects of pN and LNR delamination on disease-free survival (DFS) had statistical significance (P=0.012 for pN and P=0.031 for LNR stratification in Group A, both of them P<0.001 in Group B). Compared to pN staging, LNR staging displayed superior performance in prognosis, the adjusted hazard ratio of recurrence being 2.07 (95%CI, 1.07 to 4.0) for intermediate risk group (P=0.030) and 2.44 (95%CI, 1.21 to 4.92) for high risk group (P=0.013) in Group A., Conclusions: LNR stratification proved an adverse prognostic factor of DFS in lymph nodes positive invasive BC using cut-off values 0.20 and 0.65, and was more predictive than traditional pN classification for 5-DFS.

Objective: To determine the optimum microwave extraction process of flavonoids in peanut skin., Methods: The effects of extraction methods, microwave irradiation time, microwave power, ethanol concentration, material-liquid ratio and extraction times on the extraction of total flavonoids in peanut skin was investigated., Results: Based on the single factor experiments, the extraction conditions were optimized by orthogonal experiment. Microwave extraction method had higher extraction rate, and was selected for the extraction of total flavonoids in peanut skin. The optimum extraction conditions were as follows: the microwave power was 690 W, the extraction time was 40 s, the concentration of ethanol was 55%, the material-liquid ratio was 1: 20. Under the optimum conditions, the yield of total flavonoids was 3.18%., Conclusion: The microwave extraction method is simple, and can be applied to the fast extraction of total flavonoids in peanut skin.

Aim: To assess the application of the Kasai procedure in the surgical management of hilar bile duct strictures., Methods: Ten consecutive patients between 2005 and 2011 with hilar bile duct strictures who underwent the Kasai procedure were retrospectively analyzed. Kasai portoenterostomy with the placement of biliary stents was performed in all patients. Clinical characteristics, postoperative complications, and long-term outcomes were analyzed. All patients were followed up for 2-60 mo postoperatively., Results: Patients were classified according to the Bismuth classification of biliary strictures. There were two Bismuth III and eight Bismuth IV lesions. Six lesions were benign and four were malignant. Of the benign lesions, three were due to post-cholecystectomy injury, one to trauma, one to inflammation, and one to inflammatory pseudotumor. Of the malignant lesions, four were due to hilar cholangiocarcinoma. All patients underwent Kasai portoenterostomy with the placement of biliary stents. There were no perioperative deaths. One patient experienced anastomotic leak and was managed conservatively. No other complications occurred perioperatively. During the follow-up period, all patients reported a good quality of life., Conclusion: The Kasai procedure combined with biliary stents may be appropriate for patients with hilar biliary stricture that cannot be managed by standard surgical methods.

Little is known about the molecular and biological properties of HIV-1 intersubtype B'/C in Beijing. To fill the gap, we sequenced and analyzed the gag-pol genes from 39 HIV-1 B'/C recombinant infectors in Beijing, China during 2007. The results show that 36 CRF07&#95;BC and 2 CRF08&#95;BC isolates have a structural profile identical or nearly identical to CRF07&#95;BC or CRF08&#95;BC according to sequences in the gag-pol regions. The CRF07&#95;BC circulating in injecting drug users (IDUs) and heterosexuals forms a diverse phylogenetic tree and most isolates from homosexuals cluster together. However, all the B'/C recombinant strains were remarkable for their low interpatient diversity in gag-pol genes (3.1, 3.0, and 2.2% for isolates from IDUs, heterosexuals, and homosexuals, respectively). We identified I7V, E91G, N242T, and K361R in the gag gene and R290I (HXB2 positions) in the pol gene as signature amino acid substitutions characteristic of HIV-1 CRF07&#95;BC from the Beijing lineage. In addition, one new B'/C recombinant was detected. These results may contribute to an understanding of HIV-1 in Beijing.

Objective: To analyze the genetic characteristics of HIV-1 CRF01&#95;AE strains prevailing in Beijing., Methods: Plasma samples were collected from the newly diagnosed HIV-1 individuals being reported during 2006 to 2008 in Beijing. Gag gene fragments were amplified from RNA template which were extracted from plasma by RT and nested PCR methods. 105 CRF01&#95;AE sequences were analyzed by phylogcnetic methods and characterized through calculating the genetic distance and Entropy analysis., Results: There were four main sub-clusters in the phylogenetic tree. We named them as sub-clusters Homo-Max (67 sequences), Hetero (6 sequences), Mix (8 sequences) and Homo-Min (18 sequences) respectively, based on the mode of transmission. It was found that no international reference strain was closely related to the sub-cluster Homo-Max, Hetero or Homo-Min, including 91 samples. The strains in sub-cluster Mix consisting 8 cases that were closely related to the strains identified in Thailand and Vietnam. Genetic distance analysis on gag genes showed that the diversity of sub-clusters Homo-Max and Homo-Min was obviously less than that of the sub-cluster Hetero or Mix. When compared with sub-cluster Mix, there were 37, 29 and 11 significantly different nucleotides polymorphism compositions sites in sub-clusers Homo-Max Homo-Min and Hetero., Conclusion: This was the first report describing that four main epidemic sub-clusters were existed in CRF01&#95;AE strains prevailing in Beijing. The virus with sub-cluster Homo-Max was the dominant strain in this region with shorter period of circulation and higher proportion seen in the HIV-infected persons. The virus in sub-cluster Mix was highly homologic with the CRF01&#95;AE strains from Thailand and Vietnam.

A series of novel coumarin derivatives containing 4,5-dihydropyrazole moiety as potential telomerase inhibitors were synthesized. The bioassay tests show that compound 3d exhibited potentially high activity against human gastric cancer cell SGC-7901 with IC(50) value of 2.69 ± 0.60 μg/mL. All title compounds were assayed for telomerase inhibition by a modified TRAP assay, the results show that compounds 3d and 3f can strongly inhibit telomerase with IC(50) values of 2.0 ± 0.07 and 1.8 ± 0.35 μM, respectively. To investigate the subtype distribution and sequence characteristics of HIV-1 strains prevalent in Beijing during 2007 and to analyze the relationship between distribution of HIV-1 subtypes and transmission routes, we collected the anti-conglutinated whole blood samples from HIV-1 newly infected individuals in Beijing during 2007 and separated plasma specimens from the aamples. RNAs were extracted and the gag genes from the various samples were amplified by RT-PCR and nest-PCR. The PCR products were sequenced directly and phylogenetic analyses of gag genes were performed using the MEGA2 software. Among 200 HIV-1 plasma samples,161 gag HIV-1 gene fragments were amplified and analyzed. Seven HIV-1 subtypes or circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) of HIV-1 including A1 (1 strains), B (35 strains), Thai B (19 strains), C (3 strains), CRF01&#95;AE (49 strains), CRF07&#95;BC (51 strains), CRF08&#95;BC (3 strain) were identified circulating in Beijing. The gene divergences inside the subtypes were different, with 7.7%, 6.5%, 6.7%, 6.7%, 5.5%, 4.3%, 5.8%, in subtype A1, B, Thai B, C, CRF01&#95;AE, CRF07&#95;BC, CRF08&#95;BC, respectively. Subtypes CRF07&#95;BC and CRF01&#95;AE were predominant in Beijing account for 31.7% and 30.4% among samples. Seven HIV-1 subtypes exist in Beijing and the surveillance of HIV-1 gene variation should be paid more attention.

In the centrosymmetric title binuclear complex, [Zn(2)(C(8)H(7)O(2))(4)(C(7)H(10)N(2))(2)], the Zn atoms [Zn⋯Zn = 3.0287 (6) Å] are bridged by four 4-methyl-benzoate ligands. The four nearest O atoms around each Zn(II) atom form a distorted square-planar arrangement with the distorted square-pyramidal coordination completed by the pyridine N atom of the 4-(dimethyl-amino)pyridine ligand. In the crystal structure, weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions link the mol-ecules into infinite chains. The chains are further linked by weak C-H⋯π inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional network.

A series of new 2-(1-(2-(substituted-phenyl)-5-methyloxazol-4-yl)-3-(2-substitued-phenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-7-substitued-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives were synthesized. The results showed that compounds 9q and 10q can strongly inhibit Staphylococcus aureus DNA gyrase and Bacillus subtilis DNA gyrase (with IC(50s) of 0.125 and 0.25 microg/mL against S. aureus DNA gyrase, 0.25 and 0.125 microg/mL against B. subtilis DNA gyrase). On the basis of the biological results, structure-activity relationships were also discussed.

Objective: To understand the relationship between the HIV-1 viral sequence variation and host factors associated with HIV-1 disease progression., Methods: Env and gag fragments of HIV-1 were amplified with PCR, cloned and sequenced. Bioinformatics was employed to find the genetic variation, N-linked glycosylation, hypermutation etc. Host gene polymorphism was analysed by using restricted fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)., Results: Significant difference was found in genetic divergence between Env PCR dominant and clonal sequences (0.1 and 0.06, respectively) in non-treated group, but no significant difference was found in the HAART treated group. V3 GPGQ accounted for the most part in both treated and nontreated groups, rare V3 loop such as GPGH, GQGR and GLGR was found in treated group, V3 substitutions of I/V (position 12) and Y/H (position 21) was associated with the relatively rapid progression (RRP). Glycosylation was significantly higher in RRP than in TP for Env region, GA substitution in RRP was also significantly higher than that in TP group. SDF1-3primeA and CCR2 V64I gene frequency was higher in TP than in RRP, but the difference was not significant., Conclusion: Disease progression was associated with V3 AA change, glycosylation and GA substitution in env gene. SDF1-3primeA, CCR2 V64I and CX3CR1 V249I/M280T was not associated with disease progression significantly.

The preparation and IR properties of 1-butylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, triethylamine, benzylamine, 4-methylaniline and 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid modified glutaraldehyde crosslinked chitosan activated with cyanuric chloride were studied. The absorption of nu(O-H) and nu(N-H) at 3430-3440 cm(-1), nu(C-O-C) at 1155 cm(-1), nu(C-OH) at 1030 cm(-1) and nu(C-O) of beta-D-glucose at 899 cm(-1) were not shifted obviously. The absorption of delta(C-H) at 1400-1384 cm(-1) and nu(C-OH) at 1095 cm(-1) varied markedly. The nu(C=N) absorption of crosslinked chitosan was at 1640-1650 cm(-1). The skeleton vibration absorption of 1,3,5-triazine ring was at 803-812 cm(-1) and 1584-1590 cm(-1). With different deacetylation or substitution, the amide I, II, III absorption at 1650, 1600 and 1310 cm(-1) varied obviously. When modified with 1-butylamine, dimethylamine, benzylamine, 4-methylaniline and 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid, strong absorption of delta(NH3+) appeared at 1517-1530 cm(-1), which was weakened or disappeared when modified with trimethylamine or triethylamine, but a series of new absorption of nu(C-N) appeared at 1400-1500 cm(-1).

Aim: To investigate the effects of traditional Chinese medicinal enema (TCME) on inflammatory and immune response of colonic mucosa of rats with ulcerative colitis (UC), and to observe the pathogenic mechanism., Methods: Thirty UC rats, induced by intestinal enema together with 2.4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and acetic acid, were randomly divided into 3 groups, i.e., GI, GII and GIII. Groups GI and GII were administered with TCME and salazosulfapyridine enema (SASPE), respectively. Group GIII was clystered with only normal saline (NSE), served as control. Group GIV was taken from normal rats as reference, once daily, from the 7th day after the establishment of UC for total 28 d. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the colonic mucosa was assayed by (3)H-TdR incorporation assay. Colonic mucosal lymphocyte subpopulation adhesive molecules, CD(4)(+)CD(11a )(+), CD(4)(+)CD(18)(+), CD(8)(+)CD(11a)(+), CD(8)(+)CD1(18)(+) (LSAM), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Moreover, the expression of TNF-alpha mRNA and IFN-gamma mRNA in colonic mucosa were detected by polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)., Results: Before therapies, in model groups, GI, GII and GIII, levels of IL-6, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, CD(8)(+)CD(11a)(+) and CD(8)(+)CD(18)(+) were significantly different (38.29+/-2.61 U/mL, 16.54+/-1.23 ng/L, 8.61+/-0.89 ng/L, 13.51+/-2.31% and 12.22+/-1.13%, respectively) compared to those in GIV group (31.56+/-2.47 U/mL, 12.81+/-1.38 ng/L, 5.28+/-0.56 ng/L, 16.68+/-1.41% and 16.79+/-1.11%, respectively). After therapeutic enemas, in GI group, the contents of IL-6 (32.48+/-2.53 U/m), TNF-alpha (13.42+/-1.57 ng/L) and IFN-gamma (5.87+/-0.84 ng/L) were reduced; then, the contents of CD(8)(+)CD(11a)(+) (16.01+/-1.05 %) and CD(8)(+)CD(18)(+) (16.28+/-0.19%) were raised. There was no significant difference between groups GI and GIV, but the difference between groups GI and GII was quite obvious (P<0.05). The expressions of TNF-alpha mRNA and IFN-gamma mRNA in group GIII were much higher than those of group GIV, but those in group GI were significantly suppressed by TCME therapy., Conclusion: Ulcerative colitis is related to colonic regional mucosal inflammatory factors and immune imbalance. TCME can effectively inhibit regional mucosal inflammatory factors and improve their disorder of immunity.

A sensitive and selective kinetic spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace vanadium at room temperature (25 degrees C) was developed, based on its catalytic effect on the oxidation of indigo carmine with potassium bromate in 1.0 mol.L-1 phosphoric acid medium. The linear calibration range and detection limit are 0.02-1.0 microgram.mL-1 and 0.02 microgram.mL-1, respectively. The apparent activation energy of the quasi-zero-order catalytic reaction is 50.6 kJ.mol-1. The method is simple and rapid. In the presence of NaF, most of the common ions did not interfere to the determination of vanadium. The method was applied to the direct determination of vanadium in steel samples with satisfactory results.

We assessed the age-related changes in magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) value and the ratio of water content in rat brain (frontal lobe and pons) during normal development. All studies were done on 42 normal Wistar rats. MTR was calculated by using the equation (Moff-Mon)/Moff, where Moff and Mon were the measured signal intensities on the conventional and MT-prepared SPGR images, respectively. The ratios of water content were measured by comparing the wet weight with the dry weight of the frontal lobe and the pons, which were extracted from a rat brain soon after MTR measurements. The ratio of water content was calculated by using the equation 100 x (wet weight-dry weight)/wet weight (%). The ratio of water content decreased markedly during the first 30 days, but the decrease was very slight there after both in the frontal lobe and the pons. The change in MTR was similar to that of the ratio of water content, though the direction of change was opposite. Statistically significant inverse relationships existed between MTR and the ratio of water content both in the frontal lobe and the pons. MTR could be a new parameter with which to assess brain development.

A study on the anthropometric indices of 3835 singleton newborn babies was conducted over a four months period at Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital, Trivandrum. Of these, 1921 (50.1%) were male babies and 1914 (49.9%) were female babies. The majority of infants (43%) were born to the middle socio-economic groups and the mean birth weight of babies was high among the high-income groups. Five hundred and ninety six (15.5%) babies weighed less than 2500 g; of these 121 (20.2%) were preterm and 477 (79.8%) were full term. The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) was high (22.0%) among the mothers aged between 15 and 19 years. There was a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the mean birth weight (BW) of term male and female babies but there was no significant differences in their body length, head circumference and cord length. The mean ponderal index of term newborn babies was 2.3 g/cm3. The mean placental weight of LBW term and preterm babies was less than that of the corresponding normal weight babies. The birth weight of babies was directly proportional to their placental weight.

A study on twin births was conducted from May 1993 to April 1994 at S.A.T. Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The twinning rate in this period was found as 17.33 per 1000 births. 79.6% babies in the twin pairs were of like sex and 20.4% were of unlike sex. The incidence of low birth weight twin babies in this study was 68.9%. There was no significant difference in the physical parameters (birth weight, body length and head circumference) of twin babies in relation to sex. The incidence of twin birth was higher among primipara mothers and in the mothers of age group 21 to 25 years. The first born baby (twin A) was found to be heavier than the second born baby (twin B) in 44.78% twin pairs and their mean birth weight difference was 438 g, while the second born baby (twin B) was found to be heavier than the first born (twin A) in 38.31% twin pairs and their mean birth weight difference was 291 g. Statistical analysis showed that the difference between the mean birth weight difference in the case of twin A > B was significantly greater when compared to that of twin A < B.

The effect of orchidectomy in male rabbits and administration of testosterone to orchidectomized animals on the metabolism of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) has been studied. The response of the different GAG fractions in the aorta varies with the nature of the GAG, and in some cases is different in different segments of the aorta. Orchidectomy produced an increase in hyaluronic acid fraction, decrease in heparin sulphate fraction, and no response in the chondroitin sulphate A fraction in the aortic arch, thoracic aorta, and abdominal aorta. Chondroitin sulphate C and chondroitin sulphate B fractions decreased only in the abdominal aorta and were not significantly altered in the other two segments, while heparin fraction decreased only in the thoracic aorta and was not affected in the other segments. Administration of testosterone to the orchidectomized animals counteracted these changes in the aortic GAG fractures. The enzymes concerned with the synthesis of precursors of GAG--L-glutamine:D-fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase, UDPG dehydrogenase, and UDPG pyrophosphorylase-- all decreased in the orchidectomized animals; testosterone administration increased their activity in the orchidectomized animals. Enzymes concerned with degradation of GAG--beta-glucuronidase, beta-hexosaminidase, aryl sulphatase, cathepsin, and hyaluronidase--increased in the orchidectomized and decreased on administration of testosterone. Concentration of PAPS and activity of sulphate-activating system and sulphotransferase also decreased in the orchidectomized animals, and testosterone administration tended to restore this decrease to normal levels.
