Nanoconfined water plays an important role in broad fields of science and engineering. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been widely used to investigate water phases under nanoconfinement. The key ingredient of MD is the force field. In this study, we systematically investigated the performance of a recently introduced family of globally optimal water models, OPC and OPC3, and TIP4P/2005 in describing nanoconfined two-dimensional (2D) water ice. Our studies show that the melting points of the monolayer square ice (MSI) of all three water models are higher than the melting points of the corresponding bulk ice Ih. Under the same conditions, the melting points of MSI of OPC and TIP4P/2005 are the same and are ∼90 K lower than that of the OPC3 water model. In addition, we show that OPC and TIP4P/2005 water models are able to form a bilayer AA-stacked structure and a trilayer AAA-stacked structure, which are not the cases for the OPC3 model. Considering the available experimental data and first-principles simulations, we consider the OPC water model as a potential water model for 2D water ice MD studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To investigate the application of impaction bone grafting (IBG) combined with Ti‐alloy mesh for acetabular bone defect reconstruction in total hip arthroplasty (THA) revision and follow up the clinical outcomes and imaging findings. Methods The clinical and imaging data of patients who were admitted to our hospital from January 2000 to December 2020 and underwent acetabular bone defects reconstruction using IBG combined with titanium mesh were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative and post‐revision Oxford and Harris scores, and post‐revision complications were evaluated. Radiographs were used to determine center of rotation (COR) of the hip joint, transparency line, bone graft fusion, and bone mineral density (BMD) around the hip joint. Results Significant improvement was observed in both Oxford and Harris scores (P 0.05). The follow‐up data showed restoration of the mesh implant and graft bone fusion. Conclusions The application of IBG combined with titanium‐alloy mesh in revision THA patients with acetabular defects was found to provide satisfactory outcomes. However, large‐scale studies are still needed to further elucidate the long‐term outcomes.

The rapid growth of the horticultural industry has increased demand for soilless cultivation substrates. Peat, valued for its physical and chemical properties, is widely used in soilless cultivation. However, peat is non-renewable, and over-extraction poses serious ecological risks. Therefore, sustainable alternatives are urgently needed. Ammonium incubation, a novel method to reduce phytotoxicity, offers the potential for green waste, a significant organic solid waste resource, to substitute peat. This study optimized the ammonium incubation process to reduce green waste phytotoxicity. It systematically examined different nitrogen salts (type and amount) and environmental conditions (temperature, aeration, duration) affecting detoxification efficiency. Results show a significant reduction in phytotoxicity with ammonium bicarbonate, carbonate, and sulfate, especially carbonate, at 1.5%. Optimal conditions were 30 °C for 5 days with regular aeration. Under these conditions, ammonium salt-treated green waste significantly reduced total phenolic content and stabilized germination index (GI) at a non-phytotoxic level (127%). Using treated green waste as a partial peat substitute in lettuce cultivation showed promising results. This low-cost, low-energy method effectively converts green waste into sustainable peat alternatives, promoting eco-friendly horticulture and environmental conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prognosis for osteosarcoma (OS) is dismal due to the aggressive tumor growth and high incidence of metastasis. The long noncoding RNA human homeobox A transcript at the distal tip (HOTTIP) and the transcription factor forkhead box C1 (FOXC1) present oncogenic activities in OS. Here, we aimed at gaining insights into the underlying mechanisms and their crosstalk. The expression of FOXC1 and HOTTIP in OS tissues or cell lines was examined by real‐time PCR (RT‐PCR) and western blot. The in vitro effects of FOXC1 or HOTTIP on cell viability, proliferation, migration, invasion, and expression of target genes were examined using MTT, colony‐forming assay, wound‐healing, Transwell invasion, and western blot, respectively; the in vivo effects were examined using xenograft and experimental metastasis models. Molecular control of HOTTIP on large tumor suppressor 2 (LATS2) or transactivation of FOXC1 or Sp1 on HOTTIP was assessed by combining RNA immunoprecipitation, qRT‐PCR, western blot, ChIP, and luciferase assay. Both FOXC1 and HOTTIP were potently up‐regulated in OS tissues and cell lines. FOXC1 and HOTTIP essentially maintained viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion of OS cells in vitro and contributed to xenograft growth or lung metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, HOTTIP recruited enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) and lysine‐specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) to silence LATS2 and thus activated YAP/β‐catenin signaling. Upstream, Sp1 activated FOXC1 and they both directly transactivated HOTTIP. In summary, we showed that the Sp1/FOXC1/HOTTIP/LATS2/YAP/β‐catenin cascade presented oncogenic activities in OS cells. Targeting FOXC1 or HOTTIP may therefore prove beneficial for OS treatment.

In response to the challenge of resource recycling, this review investigates the removal of phytotoxicity from agricultural waste for its application as a growing media component. Agricultural waste typically exhibits high phytotoxicity due to the presence of substances such as phenols, organic acids, ammonia, nitrogen, and heavy metals. These substances hinder seed germination and plant growth, posing a significant barrier to the use of agricultural waste as a growing media component. Thus, it is imperative to mitigate or eliminate phytotoxicity before effectively utilizing agricultural waste. This review rigorously analyzes an extensive array of recent studies, scrutinizing diverse technologies for the mitigation of phytotoxicity in agricultural wastes. The methods investigated include the four most common methods—composting, heat treatment, washing, and aging, and a recently introduced method, ammonium incubation. Each method was assessed considering its underlying principles, effects in application, and respective advantages and disadvantages. This review suggests that successful phytotoxicity mitigation in agricultural waste hinges on reducing the content or activity of phytotoxic substances. Moreover, this study emphasizes that future phytotoxicity mitigation efforts should aim for economic efficiency while maximizing the preservation of the original material volume and weight. This study offers insightful guidance for technical professionals aiming to mitigate the phytotoxicity of agricultural waste, thereby fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
