A balance disorder is prevalent in older people who cause psychological problems and physical injuries. According to the financial, time, and human resource limitations for developing an elderly rehabilitation ward, this study aims to identify the most significant preventive falling interventions in older population by using the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method to allocate resources to the most effective preventive interventions. First, through the literature review all effective balance interventions were extracted then panel discussion, the Delphi method, and the best-worst method (BWM) was employed to prioritize the preventive falling interventions. The result showed that the most significant preventive falling interventions were Neurofeedback (N1), Tai chi (D1), and Balance and strength training (E2) with a weight of 0.5956, 0.3771, and 0.3351are ranked first, second, and third among the criteria, respectively. BackgroundKnee braces and foot orthoses are commonly used to improve knee adduction moment, pain and function in subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, no literature review has been performed to compare the effects of foot orthoses and knee braces in this group of patients.PurposeThe aim of this review was to evaluate the effects of foot orthoses and knee braces on knee adduction moment, pain and function in individuals with knee OA.Study designLiterature review.MethodThe search strategy was based on the Population Intervention Comparison Outcome method. A search was performed in PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar and ISI web of knowledge databases using the PRISMA method and based on selected keywords. Thirty-one related articles were selected for final evaluation.ResultsThe results of the analysis of these studies demonstrated that orthotic devices reduce knee adduction moment and also improve pain and function in individuals with knee OA.ConclusionFoot orthoses may be more effective in improving pain and function in subjects with knee OA. Both knee braces and foot orthoses reduce the knee adduction moment in knee OA and consequently patients typically do not need to use knee braces for a long period of time. Extracts of 4 medicinal and aromatic plants were investigated for their antioxidant potency employing six various established in vitro system: H. officinalis L. var. angustifolius aerial parts, C. speciosum flowers, V. odorata and B. hyrcana leaves. With regard to IC50 values (μg/ml), the order in DPPH radical-scavenging were CS (585.6)> HO (311)> VO (245.1)> and BH (113.1). Effectiveness in reducing powers were high and in a descending order of HO> CS> BH> VO (at the concentrations of 25-800 μg/ml). IC50 for Fe2+ chelating ability were 188, 750 and 980 μg/ml for VO, CS and HO, respectively. RH extract has shown only 38% inhibition at 800 μg/ml. The extracts showed weak nitric oxide-scavenging activity. All extracts exhibited very low and moderate concentration-dependent antioxidant activity in FTC methods. IC50 for scavenging of H2O2 were 169 for BH, 175 for CS, 640 for VO and 663 μg/ml for HO. The content of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were measured in plant extracts.
