IntroductionWe investigated the associations of high-sensitivity cardiac Troponin T (hs-cTnT) and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels with risk of developing clinical peripheral artery disease (PAD) or a low ankle-brachial index (ABI).MethodsHs-cTnT and NT-proBNP were measured in 6692 and 5458 participants respectively without baseline PAD between 2000 and 2002 in the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. A significant number also had repeat biomarker measurement between 2004 and 2005. Incident clinical PAD was ascertained through 2017. Incident low ABI, defined as ABI 0.9 at baseline and at least one follow-up ABI measurement 3-10 years later. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards and logistic regression modeling were used to determine the association of these biomarkers with clinical PAD and low ABI, respectively.ResultsOverall, 121 clinical PAD and 118 low ABI events occurred. Adjusting for demographic and clinical characteristics, each log unit increment in hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP was associated with a 30% (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 1.3, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1, 1.6) and 50% (HR) 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2, 1.8) higher risk of clinical PAD respectively. No significant associations were observed for incident low ABI. Change in these biomarkers was not associated with either of the PAD outcomes.ConclusionsNT-proBNP and hs-cTnT are independently associated with the development of clinical PAD. Further study should determine whether these biomarkers can help to better identify those at higher risk for PAD.

AimsWhile heart failure with preserved (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) are well described, determinants and outcomes of heart failure with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF) remain unclear. We sought to examine clinical and biochemical predictors of incident HFmrEF in the community.Methods and resultsWe pooled data from four community-based longitudinal cohorts, with ascertainment of new heart failure (HF) classified into HFmrEF [ejection fraction (EF) 41-49%], HFpEF (EF ≥50%), and HFrEF (EF ≤40%). Predictors of incident HF subtypes were assessed using multivariable Cox models. Among 28 820 participants free of HF followed for a median of 12 years, there were 200 new HFmrEF cases, compared with 811 HFpEF and 1048 HFrEF. Clinical predictors of HFmrEF included age, male sex, systolic blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and prior myocardial infarction (multivariable adjusted P ≤ 0.003 for all). Biomarkers that predicted HFmrEF included natriuretic peptides, cystatin-C, and high-sensitivity troponin (P ≤ 0.0004 for all). Natriuretic peptides were stronger predictors of HFrEF [hazard ratio (HR) 2.00 per 1 standard deviation increase, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.81-2.20] than of HFmrEF (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.20-1.90, P = 0.01 for difference), and did not differ in their association with incident HFmrEF and HFpEF (HR 1.56, 95% CI 1.41-1.73, P = 0.68 for difference). All-cause mortality following the onset of HFmrEF was worse than that of HFpEF (50 vs. 39 events per 1000 person-years, P = 0.02), but comparable to that of HFrEF (46 events per 1000 person-years, P = 0.78).ConclusionsWe found overlap in predictors of incident HFmrEF with other HF subtypes. In contrast, mortality risk after HFmrEF was worse than HFpEF, and similar to HFrEF.

BackgroundAlthough the association between coronary artery calcium (CAC) and future heart failure (HF) has been shown previously, the value of CAC progression in the prediction of HF has not been investigated. In this study, we investigated the association of CAC progression with subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and incident HF in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.Methods and resultsThe Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis is a population-based study consisting of 6814 men and women aged 45 to 84, free of overt cardiovascular disease at enrollment, who were recruited from 4 ethnicities. We included 5644 Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis participants who had baseline and follow-up cardiac computed tomography and were free of HF and coronary heart disease before the second cardiac computed tomography. Mean (±SD) age was 61.7±10.2 years and 47.2% were male. The Cox proportional hazard models and multivariable linear regression models were deployed to determine the association of CAC progression with incident HF and subclinical LV dysfunction, respectively. Over a median follow-up of 9.6 (interquartile range: 8.8-10.6) years, 182 participants developed incident HF. CAC progression of 10 units per year was associated with 3% of increased risk of HF independent of overt coronary heart disease (P=0.008). In 2818 participants with available cardiac magnetic resonance images, CAC progression was associated with increased LV end diastolic volume (β=0.16; P=0.03) and LV end systolic volume (β=0.12; P=0.006) after excluding participants with any coronary heart disease.ConclusionsCAC progression was associated with incident HF and modestly increased LV end diastolic volume and LV end systolic volume at follow-up exam independent of overt coronary heart disease.

IntroductionPrevious studies have demonstrated an association between HIV infection and coronary artery disease (CAD); little is known about potential associations between HIV infection and extra-coronary calcification (ECC).MethodsWe analyzed 621 HIV infected (HIV+) and 384 HIV uninfected (HIV-) men from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study who underwent non-contrast computed tomography (CT) from 2010-2013. Agatston scores were calculated for mitral annular calcification (MAC), aortic valve calcification (AVC), aortic valve ring calcification (AVRC), and thoracic aortic calcification (TAC). The associations between HIV infection and the presence of each type of ECC (score > 0) were evaluated by multivariable logistic regression. We also evaluated the association of ECC with inflammatory biomarker levels and coronary plaque morphology.ResultsAmong HIV+ and HIV- men, the age-standardized prevalences were 15% for TAC (HIV+ 14%/HIV- 16%), 10% for AVC (HIV+ 11%/HIV- 8%), 24% for AVRC (HIV+ 23% HIV- 24%), and 5% for MAC (HIV+ 7%/HIV- 3%). After adjustment, HIV+ men had 3-fold greater odds of MAC compared to HIV- men (OR = 3.2, 95% CI: 1.5-6.7), and almost twice the odds of AVC (1.8, 1.1-2.9). HIV serostatus was not associated with TAC or AVRC. AVRC was associated with higher Il-6 and sCD163 levels. TAC was associated with higher ICAM-1, TNF-α RII, and Il-6 levels. AVC and AVRC calcification were associated with presence of non-calcified plaque in HIV+ but not HIV- men.ConclusionHIV infection is an independent predictor of MAC and AVC. Whether these calcifications predict mortality in HIV+ patients deserves further investigation.

Background: Methyldopa is a catecholamine widely used as an antihypertensive agent. Pioglitazone is an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent. It is used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2. A survey of the literature reveals that only one spectrofluorimetric method has been reported for the determination of pioglitazone in pharmaceutical preparations. Atenolol and metoprolol are prescription drugs of the β-blocker class with hypotensive action to treat angina, MI, alcohol syndrome, hypertension, and arrhythmias. A survey of the literature reveals that several spectrofluorimetric methods have been reported for the determination of atenolol and metoprolol in pharmaceutical preparations. In continuing of our studies on the developing of simple and fast spectrofluorimetric methods for determination of drugs and active ingredients, in this work we have developed a spectrofluorimetric method based on the oxidation with cerium (IV) for the determination of studied drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations. Methods: A simple, rapid and sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the determination of studied drugs in pharmaceutical formulations. Proposed method is based on the oxidation of these drugs with Ce (IV) to produce Ce (III), and its fluorescence was monitored at 356 ± 3 nm after excitation at 254 ± 3 nm. Results: The variables affecting oxidation of each drug were studied and optimized. Under the experimental conditions used, the calibration graphs were linear over the range of 25-450, 50-550, 15-800 and 15-800 ng/mL in the case of atenolol, metoprolol, pioglitazone and methyldopa, respectively. The limit of detection was found to be 8.27, 16.5, 1.52 and 5.08 ng/mL in the case of atenolol, metoprolol, pioglitazone and methyldopa, respectively. Intra- and inter-day assay precisions, expressed as the relative standard deviation (RSD), were lower than 3% in all cases. Conclusion: The proposed method was applied to the determination of studied drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations by good recoveries in the range 92-113%.

The GTN micromechanical fracture model is frequently used to predict the ductile fracture. This model is based on the microscopic mechanism of void nucleation, growth and coalescence in ductile material. GTN model includes many parameters that need to be precisely calibrated in order to obtain the maximum accuracy. In this study, an indirect approach is used to determine the GTN model parameters of a NiTi alloy by using the response surface method, RSM. This method is implemented in combination with the polynomial regression method. A quadratic polynomial equation is employed to obtain a relationship between the experimental results of smooth and notched round bar tensile tests with GTN model parameters. Furthermore, the genetic algorithm technique is used to find the tuned values of the parameters by minimizing the difference between the numerical and experimental responses. Compared with experimental results, simulations with the calibrated parameters could precisely predict the NiTi fracture process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Persian oak (Quercus Brantii Lindl) is the most abundant tree species in Zagros mountain range that is affected by western dust storms and harsh droughts in recent years. The lack of spectral-temporal information about these trees has caused limitations on the usage of remote sensing images to make a synoptic estimation of damages caused by dust storms and drought. The objective of this research is to analyse the spectral-temporal behaviour of Persian oak under the stress of water deficiency and dust storms. The aim is to improve the competitive abilities of experts on modelling the stress of water deficiency and dust storms on trees using remote sensing images. For the purpose of this experimental investigation, a greenhouse laboratory has been built. Analysis of the experiments was carried out using 54 two-year-old oak tree seedlings; Fieldspec-3-ADD; and wind tunnel at the greenhouse of the faculty of agriculture of the Tarbiat Modares University in 2016. Results show that the water stress could be modelled much better using geometrical indices extracted from continuum removed spectrum. Area and the depth were best indices. Water stress has been modelled better that dust stress.

Salinity causes nutrient imbalances in plants, even in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), a halophyte with high nutritional value. Current investigation is a complementary study, carried out in continuation of the previous research on quinoa which illustrated that the Salinity Threshold Value (STV) of quinoa varies during different stages of its growth; it was performed in three cultivation periods, each period containing two irrigation methods (IM): i) Irrigating by ‎constant levels of ‎water salinity (ECi) (i.e. 0.3, 10, 15, 20, 25dSm−1) regardless of STV(P); and ii) Considering STV ‎at each ‎growth stage(T). Present study investigated the effect of abovementioned IMs (P, T) and ECis (i.e. 0.3, 10, 15, 20, 25dSm−1) on accumulation of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) ions in shoots (end of vegetation) and seeds (end of seed-filling) of quinoa. Results indicated that an increase in ECi ‎from 0.3 to 25dSm−1, especially after STV, caused a 56.6% and 12.8% increase of N while a 44.3% and 27.8% decrease of P, respectively in shoot and seed of quinoa. K only showed 30.2% increase in shoot. The change of all three ions was sharper in shoot than seed due to halophytic properties of quinoa which reduces salinity influence on seed embryo. The seed of quinoa is the main source of N and protein while the shoot is rich in P and K.
