The main aim of this work was to study the effect of storage system (traditional, ventilated and cold) and package type on the quality of okra during storage. The results indicated that, the total accumulated weight loss increases with increasing the storage period. Storage system had a great effect on the losses, where, the traditional storage system recorded was 86.00 % compared with 84.37 and 68.68 % for the okra stored in the ventilated and cold systems. The okra stored without packages recorded the highest accumulated weight loss (86.00%) when stored at traditional storage system while the lowest accumulated weight losses (33.03%) for the okra stored in the clothes packages when stored in the cold storage. The highest value of moisture loss was recorded by the okra pods stored without packages, while the lowest value of moisture loss was recorded for the okra stored in without packages. The ash, protein, nitrogen and fat composition were increased with increasing storage period for different storge system and package types, while, the fiber composition was decreased with increasing storage period for the same conditions. The main aim of the present study is develop, manufacture and evaluate a garlic peeler which is made from local raw materials. The effect of different rotational speeds of disk (210, 240 and 270 rpm), operating times (1, 2 and 3 min) and batch loads (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 kg) were studied. The peeler productivity, efficiency, damage cloves percentage, specific energy consumption and costs were determined. The obtained results indicated that the garlic peeler productivity increased from 17.88 to 19.33 and 8.52 to 29.04 kg h-1, with increasing rotational speed of disk and operating time, respectively and it decreased from 28.84 to 12.46 kg h-1 with increasing batch load from 0.5 to 1.5 kg. The peeler efficiency increased with increasing rotational speed of disk, operating time and batch load. The highest value of damaged cloves percentage (0.26%) was found for 270 rpm rotational speed of disk at 1 min of operating time for 1.5 batch load. The specific energy consumption decreases with increasing rotational speed of disk and operating time. The total cost of garlic peeler decreased from 0.230 to 0.215 and 0.402 to 0.105 EGP kg-1 with increasing rotational speed of disk and operating time, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of producing hydrogen gas from water by electrolysis as renewable source of energy. To achieve that, a simplified unit of water electrolysis was developed and evaluated. Five types of water (4000 ppm, 6000 ppm, 8000 ppm, alkaline water (10% wt KOH) and seawater) were used, three distance between electrodes namely 6, 4 and 2 mm were also investigated. Hydrogen yield, energy requirements, and energy output were studied. Unit efficiency and cost of hydrogen production was also determined. The obtained results indicate that the energy requirements for hydrogen production increases with decreasing distance between electrodes and increasing operating time. The hydrogen yield increases with decreasing distance between electrodes and increases with increasing operating time, where it ranged from 1.977 to 36.997 L h-1 for all treatments. The energy output increases with decreasing distance between electrodes and increases with increasing operating time which ranged from 0.007 to 0.180 kWh for all treatments. The hydrogen production unit efficiency ranged from 25.36 to 80.32 % for all treatments. The total costs of hydrogen production unit ranged from 0.040 to 0.069 LE kg-1 of hydrogen. The physical parameter results showed that the garlic geometric and arithmetic mean diameters ranged from 2.53 to 4.93, and 2.53 to 5.02 cm, respectively according to the bulb size categories. The cloves' length, width and thickness were 1.92 to 2.91, 0.78 to 1.32, and 0.69 to 0.99 cm, respectively. The surface and cross-sectional of areas ranged from 53.31 to 136.4 and 29.1 to 128.4 cm2, respectively. The number of cloves ranged from 18 to 51/bulb according to the bulbs size categories. Bulk density, repose angle and coefficient of contact surface values ranged from 892 to 1007 kg/m3, 41.52 to 45.04º, and 0.91 to 1.12, respectively, according to the bulb size categories. The chemical properties showed that the emptying (friction) angle ranged from 23.25 to 28.82º, where small bulbs recorded the highest values on the concrete surfaces, while the lowest values were recorded by the large bulbs on the iron surfaces. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing bulb size, where it was the highest (0.8) for the small bulbs on the concrete surfaces; on the other hand, the lowest values (0.36) were recorded for the large bulbs on the iron surfaces. The crushing load of the cloves ranged from 55.6 to 155.0 N, depending on the bulb size. The force required for loosening the cloves from the bulb ranged from 110 to 272 and 101 to 320 N on the horizontal and vertical positions of the bulbs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
