We study the intracluster light (ICL) and intracluster globular clusters (ICGCs) in the nearby Perseus galaxy cluster using Euclid's EROs. By modelling the isophotal and iso-density contours, we mapped the distributions and properties of the ICL and ICGCs out to radii of 200-600 kpc (up to ~1/3 of the virial radius) from the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We find that the central 500 kpc hosts 70000$\pm$2800 GCs and $1.7\times10^{12}$ L$_\odot$ of diffuse light from the BCG+ICL in the near-infrared H$_E$. This accounts for 38$\pm$6% of the cluster's total stellar luminosity within this radius. The ICL and ICGCs share a coherent spatial distribution, suggesting a common origin or that a common potential governs their distribution. Their contours on the largest scales (>200 kpc) are offset from the BCG's core westwards by 60 kpc towards several luminous cluster galaxies. This offset is opposite to the displacement observed in the gaseous intracluster medium. The radial surface brightness profile of the BCG+ICL is best described by a double S\'ersic model, with 68$\pm$4% of the H$_E$ light in the extended, outer component. The transition between these components occurs at ~60 kpc, beyond which the isophotes become increasingly elliptical and off-centred. The radial ICGC number density profile closely follows the BCG+ICL profile only beyond this 60 kpc radius, where we find an average of 60-80 GCs per $10^9$ M$_\odot$ of diffuse stellar mass. The BCG+ICL colour becomes increasingly blue with radius, consistent with the stellar populations in the ICL having subsolar metallicities [Fe/H] ~ -0.6 to -1.0. The colour of the ICL, and the specific frequency and luminosity function of the ICGCs suggest that the ICL+ICGCs were tidally stripped from the outskirts of massive satellites with masses of a few $\times10^{10}$ M$_\odot$, with an increasing contribution from dwarf galaxies at large radii., Comment: Paper submitted as part of the A&A special issue `Euclid on Sky', which contains Euclid key reference papers and first results from the Euclid Early Release Observations. 27 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables. The changes in colors across a galaxy are intimately connected to the galaxy's formation, growth, quenching history, and dust content. A particularly important epoch in the growth of galaxies is near $z \sim 2$ often referred to as `cosmic noon', where galaxies on average reach the peak of their star formation. We study a population of 125 cluster galaxies at $z \sim 1.6$ in three Hubble Space Telescope (HST) filters, F475W, F625W, and F160W, roughly corresponding to the rest-frame FUV, NUV, and r band, respectively. By comparing to a control sample of 200 field galaxies at similar redshift, we reveal clear, statistically significant differences in the overall spatially resolved colors and color gradients in galaxies across these two different environments. On average, cluster galaxies have redder UV colors in both the inner and outer regions bounded by $r_{\mathrm{50}}$, as well as an overall wider dispersion of outside-in color gradients. The presence of these observed differences, along with evidence from ancillary data from previous studies, strongly suggests that the environment drives these population-level color differences, by affecting the stellar populations and/or dust content., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Context: Observations of the hot gas in distant clusters of galaxies, though challenging, are key to understand the role of intense galaxy activity, super-massive black hole feedback and chemical enrichment in the process of massive halos assembly. Aims: We assess the feasibility to retrieve, using X-ray hyperspectral data only, the thermodymamical hot gas properties and chemical abundances of a $z=2$ galaxy cluster of mass M500=7 x $10^{13} M_{\odot}$, extracted from the Hydrangea hydrodynamical simulation. Methods: We create mock X-ray observations of the future X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) onboard the Athena mission. By forward-modeling the measured 0.4-1 keV surface brightness, the projected gas temperature and abundance profiles, we reconstruct the three-dimensional distribution for the gas density, pressure, temperature and entropy. Results: Thanks to its large field-of-view, high throughput and exquisite spectral resolution, one X-IFU exposure lasting 100ks enables reconstructing density and pressure profiles with 20% precision out to a characteristic radius of R500, accounting for each quantity's intrinsic dispersion in the Hydrangea simulations. Reconstruction of abundance profiles requires both higher signal-to-noise ratios and specific binning schemes. We assess the enhancement brought by longer exposures and by observing the same object at later evolutionary stages ($z=1-1.5$). Conclusions: Our analysis highlights the importance of scatter in the radially binned gas properties, which induces significant effects on the observed projected quantities. The fidelity of the reconstruction of gas profiles is sensitive to the degree of gas components mixing along the line-of-sight. Future analyses should aim at involving dedicated hyper-spectral models and fitting methods that are able to grasp the complexity of such three-dimensional, multi-phase, diffuse gas structures., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Intracluster light is thought to originate from stars that were ripped away from their parent galaxies by gravitational tides and galaxy interactions during the build up of the cluster. The stars from such interactions will accumulate over time, so semi-analytic models suggest that the abundance of intracluster stars is negligible in young proto-clusters at z~2 and grows to around a quarter of the stellar mass in the oldest, most mature clusters. In contrast to these theoretical expectations, we report on the detection of intracluster light within two proto-clusters at z=2 using deep HST images. We use the colour of the intracluster light to estimate its mass-to-light ratio in annuli around the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG), up to a radius of 100 kpc. We find that $54\pm5$% and $71\pm3$% of the stellar mass in these regions is located more than 10 kpc away from the BCGs in the two proto-clusters. This low concentration is similar to BCGs in lower redshift clusters, and distinct from other massive proto-cluster galaxies. This suggests that intracluster stars are already present within the core 100 kpc of proto-clusters. We compare these observations to the Hydrangea hydrodynamical galaxy cluster simulations and find that intracluster stars are predicted to be a generic feature of group-sized halos at z=2. A substantial fraction of the cosmic baryons is expected to hide in the form of diffuse warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), the majority of which resides in the filaments of the Cosmic Web and has proven very difficult to detect due to its low density. Close to galaxy clusters, the filament gas is affected by the cluster's gravitational potential and attains substantial infall velocities, eventually undergoing a termination shock which may boost its X-ray signal. We aim to identify the optimal locations of the enhanced X-ray emission and absorption arising from cluster-filament interactions, as well as improve our understanding of the various physical processes affecting the WHIM as it approaches the cluster. We applied the DisPerSE filament finder to the galaxy distribution in the surroundings of a Coma-like ($M_{200} \sim 10^{15.4}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$) simulated C-EAGLE galaxy cluster. We characterised the thermodynamic properties of the gas in such filaments as well as their dependence on distance from the cluster, and provided a physical interpretation for the results. The identified filaments account for $\sim 50$% of the hot WHIM ($T > 10^{5.5}$ K) in the cluster vicinity. The filament gas is in approximate free-fall all the way down to $\sim 2 \ r_{200}$ from the cluster, at which stage it begins to slow down due to the increasing pressure of the ambient gas. The deceleration is accompanied by the conversion of gas bulk kinetic energy into heat and the increase of density and temperature from the general Cosmic Web level of $\rho \sim 10\rho_{\rm av}$ and $T = 10^5-10^6$ K towards $\rho \sim 100\rho_{\rm av}$ and $T = 10^7-10^8$ K near the cluster boundary. We conclude that the detection of the cosmic filaments of galaxies around clusters may provide a practical observational avenue for locating the densest and hottest phase of the missing baryons., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The outskirts of accreting dark matter haloes exhibit a sudden drop in density delimiting their multi-stream region. Due to the dynamics of accretion, the location of this physically motivated edge strongly correlates with the halo growth rate. Using hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of high-mass clusters, we explore this definition in realistic simulations and find an explicit connection between this feature in the dark matter and galaxy profiles. We also show that the depth of the splashback feature correlates well with the direction of filaments and, surprisingly, the orientation of the brightest cluster galaxy. Our findings suggest that galaxy profiles and weak-lensing masses can define an observationally viable mass-size scaling relation for galaxy clusters, which can be used to extract cosmological information., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. We use stellar and dynamical mass profiles, combined with a stellar population analysis, of 32 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at redshifts of 0.05 $\leq z \leq$ 0.30, to place constraints on their stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF). We measure the spatially-resolved stellar population properties of the BCGs, and use it to derive their stellar mass-to-light ratios ($\Upsilon_{\star \rm POP}$). We find young stellar populations ($<$200 Myr) in the centres of 22 per cent of the sample, and constant $\Upsilon_{\star \rm POP}$ within 15 kpc for 60 per cent of the sample. We further use the stellar mass-to-light ratio from the dynamical mass profiles of the BCGs ($\Upsilon_{\star \rm DYN}$), modelled using a Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) and Jeans Anisotropic Method (JAM), with the dark matter contribution explicitly constrained from weak gravitational lensing measurements. We directly compare the stellar mass-to-light ratios derived from the two independent methods, $\Upsilon_{\star \rm POP}$ (assuming some IMF) to $\Upsilon_{\star \rm DYN}$ for the subsample of BCGs with no young stellar populations and constant $\Upsilon_{\star \rm POP}$. We find that for the majority of these BCGs, a Salpeter (or even more bottom-heavy) IMF is needed to reconcile the stellar population and dynamical modelling results although for a small number of BCGs, a Kroupa (or even lighter) IMF is preferred. For those BCGs better fit with a Salpeter IMF, we find that the mass-excess factor against velocity dispersion falls on an extrapolation (towards higher masses) of known literature correlations. We investigate the stellar and dynamical mass profiles in the centres of 25 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at redshifts of 0.05 $\leq z \leq$ 0.30. Our spectroscopy enables us to robustly measure the Gauss-Hermite higher order velocity moments $h_{3}$ and $h_{4}$, which we compare to measurements for massive early-type galaxies, and central group galaxies. We measure positive central values for $h_{4}$ for all the BCGs. We derive the stellar mass-to-light ratio ($\Upsilon_{\star \rm DYN}$), and velocity anisotropy ($\beta$) based on a Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) and axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Methods (JAM, cylindrically- and spherically-aligned). We explicitly include a dark matter halo mass component, which is constrained by weak gravitational lensing measurements for these clusters. We find a strong correlation between anisotropy and velocity dispersion profile slope, with rising velocity dispersion profiles corresponding to tangential anisotropy and decreasing velocity dispersion profiles corresponding to radial anisotropy. The rising velocity dispersion profiles can also indicate a significant contribution from the intracluster light (ICL) to the total light (in projection) in the centre of the galaxy. For a small number of BCGs with rising velocity dispersion profiles, a variable stellar mass-to-light ratio can also account for the profile shape, instead of tangential anisotropy or a significant ICL contribution. We note that, for some BCGs, a variable $\beta_{z}(r)$ (from radial to tangential anisotropy) can improve the model fit to the observed kinematic profiles. Recently a number of studies have found a similarity between the passive fraction of central and satellite galaxies when controlled for both stellar and halo mass. These results suggest that the quenching processes that affect galaxies are largely agnostic to central/satellite status, which contradicts the traditional picture of increased satellite quenching via environmental processes such as stripping, strangulation and starvation. Here we explore this further using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey which extends to ~2dex lower in stellar mass than SDSS, is more complete for closely-separated galaxies (>95% compared to >70%), and identifies lower-halo-mass groups outside of the very local Universe (M$_{\mathrm{halo}}\sim10^{12}$M$_{\odot}$ at $0.1

The splashback radius $r_\text{sp}$ separates the physical regimes of collapsed and infalling material around massive dark matter haloes. In cosmological simulations, this location is associated with a steepening of the spherically averaged density profile $\rho(r)$. In this work, we measure the splashback feature in the stacked weak gravitational lensing signal of $27$ massive clusters from the Cluster Canadian Comparison Project with careful control of residual systematics effects. We find that the shear introduced by the presence of additional structure along the line of sight significantly affects the noise at large clustercentric distances. Although we do not detect a significant steepening, the use of a simple parametric model enables us to measure both $r_\text{sp}=3.5^{+1.1}_{-0.7}$ comoving Mpc and the value of the logarithmic slope $\gamma = \log \rho / \log r$ at this point, $\gamma(r_\text{sp}) = -4.3^{+1.0}_{-1.5}$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures.
