Search

Comets, relics from the early solar system, consist of dust and ice. The ice sublimates as comets approach the Sun, ejecting dust from their nuclei seen as activity. Different volatiles sublimate at different Sun-comet distances and eject dust of unique sizes, structures, and compositions. In this study, we present new polarimetric observations of Oort-cloud comet C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS) in R and I-filter domains before, during, and after its crossover of the water-ice sublimation regime at phase angles of 15.9\arcdeg, 10.5\arcdeg, and 20.0\arcdeg, respectively. Combining multiband optical imaging data covering a wide range of heliocentric distances ($\sim$14$-$2.3 au), we aim to characterize the preperihelion evolution of cometary activity as well as the properties of its coma dust. Two discontinuous brightening events were observed: at $\sim$6 au presumably associated with changes in CO-like supervolatile ice activity, and at $\sim$2.9 au when water ice took over. Particularly, the latter activation is accompanied by changes in coma morphology and color whose trends differ between the inner ($\sim$10$^3$-km) and outer ($\sim$10$^4$-km) parts of the coma. No polarimetric discontinuities on the comet were observed over the inner coma region, all epochs showing phase-angle and wavelength dependencies compatible with those of active comets observed in similar observing geometry. During this period, the underlying dust continuum overwhelmed H$\alpha$ emission at around 656.3 nm, suggesting less water ice on the comet's surface than expected. Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) become observable for the first time in 2021 since the Rosetta rendezvous in 2014--16. Here, we present pre-perihelion polarimetric measurements of 67P from 2021 performed with the Very Large Telescope (VLT), as well as post-perihelion polarimetric measurements from 2015--16 obtained with the VLT and the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). This new data covers a phase angle range of ~4-50{\deg} and presents polarimetric measurements of unprecedentedly high S/N ratio. Complementing previous measurements, the polarimetric phase curve of 67P resembles that of other Jupiter family comets and high-polarisation, dusty comets. Comparing pre- and post-perihelion data sets, we find only a marginal difference between the polarimetric phase curves. In our imaging maps, we detect various linear structures produced by the dust in the inner coma of the comet. Despite this, we find a homogeneous spread of polarisation around the photocentre throughout the coma and tail, in contrast to previous studies. Finally, we explore the consequences of image misalignments on both polarimetric maps and aperture polarimetric measurements., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. Recent surveys of close white dwarf binaries as well as single white dwarfs have provided evidence for the late appearance of magnetic fields in white dwarfs, and a possible generation mechanism a crystallization and rotation-driven dynamo has been suggested. A key prediction of this dynamo is that magnetic white dwarfs rotate, at least on average, faster than their non-magnetic counterparts and/or that the magnetic field strength increases with rotation. Here we present rotation periods of ten white dwarfs within 40 pc measured using photometric variations. Eight of the light curves come from TESS observations and are thus not biased towards short periods, in contrast to most period estimates that have been reported previously in the literature. These TESS spin periods are indeed systematically shorter than those of non-magnetic white dwarfs. This means that the crystallization and rotation-driven dynamo could be responsible for a fraction of the magnetic fields in white dwarfs. However, the full sample of magnetic white dwarfs also contains slowly rotating strongly magnetic white dwarfs which indicates that another mechanism that leads to the late appearance of magnetic white dwarfs might be at work, either in addition to or instead of the dynamo. We have monitored the Didymos-Dimorphos binary system in imaging polarimetric mode before and after the impact from the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. A previous spectropolarimetric study showed that the impact caused a dramatic drop in polarisation. Our longer-term monitoring shows that the polarisation of the post-impact system remains lower than the pre-impact system even months after the impact, suggesting that some fresh ejecta material remains in the system at the time of our observations, either in orbit or settled on the surface. The slope of the post-impact polarimetric curve is shallower than that of the pre-impact system, implying an increase in albedo of the system. This suggests that the ejected material is composed of smaller and possibly brighter particles than those present on the pre-impact surface of the asteroid. Our polarimetric maps show that the dust cloud ejected immediately after the impact polarises light in a spatially uniform manner (and at a lower level than pre-impact). Later maps exhibit a gradient in polarisation between the photocentre (which probes the asteroid surface) and the surrounding cloud and tail. The polarisation occasionally shows some small-scale variations, the source of which is not yet clear. This study presents the first optical spectropolarimetric study of large C-complex asteroids. A total of 64 C-complex asteroids of different subclasses are analyzed using archival polarimetric and reflectance data to refine the link between polarimetric parameters and surface properties of the asteroids. We find a consistent difference in the polarization spectra between asteroids containing phyllosilicates and those without, which correlates with the overall morphology of the reflectance spectrum. They exhibit broad similarities in polarization-phase curves; nonetheless, we observe a gradual enhancement of the negative polarization branch in the ascending order of F-B-T-Ch types, along with an increase in reflectance curvature around 500 nm. Our observations suggest at least for large C-complex asteroids a common mechanism underlies the diversity in optical properties. The observed trends would be explained by the surface composition of the asteroids, particularly optical heterogeneity caused by carbon's varying levels of optical influence, primarily regulated by aqueous alteration of the surfaces., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Some active asteroids have been proposed to be the result of impact events. Because active asteroids are generally discovered serendipitously only after their tail formation, the process of the impact ejecta evolving into a tail has never been directly observed. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, apart from having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid from an impact under precisely known impact conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from impact time T+15 minutes to T+18.5 days at spatial resolutions of ~2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal a complex evolution of ejecta, which is first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and later by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed via a sustained tail that displayed a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by impact. The ejecta evolution following DART's controlled impact experiment thus provides a framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms acting on asteroids disrupted by natural impact., Comment: accepted by Nature

About half of white dwarfs (WDs) evolve to the DC state as they cool; the others become DQ or (temporarily?) DZ WDs. The recent magnetic survey of the local 20 pc volume has established a high frequency of magnetic fields among WDs older than 2-3 Gyr, demonstrating that in low- and average-mass WDs, the effects of magnetism become more common as they age, and the fields on average become stronger. However, the available statistics of WDs older than about 5 Gyr do not clearly establish how fields evolve beyond this age. We are carrying out a survey to clarify the occurrence of magnetism in DC-type WDs in order to better understand this late evolution. We use broadband filter polarimetry, arguably the most efficient way to detect magnetic fields in featureless WDs via continuum circular polarization. Here we report the discovery of a magnetic field in five DC WDs (of 23 observed), almost doubling the total sample of known magnetic WDs belonging to the DC spectral class., Comment: Accepted by A&A

The presence of a strong magnetic field is a feature common to a significant fraction of degenerate stars, yet little is understood about field origin and evolution. New observational constraints from volume-limited surveys point to a more complex situation than a single mechanism valid for all stars. We show that in high-mass white dwarfs, which are probably the results of mergers, magnetic fields are extremely common and very strong, and appear immediately in the cooling phase. These fields may have been generated by a dynamo active during the merging. Lower mass white dwarfs, which are often the product of single star evolution, are rarely detectably magnetic at birth, but fields appear very slowly, and very weakly, in about a quarter of them. What we may see is an internal field produced in an earlier evolutionary stage that gradually relaxes to the surface from the interior. The frequency and strength of magnetic fields continue to increase to eventually rival those of highly-massive stars, particularly after the stars cool past the start of core crystallisation, an effect that could be responsible for a dynamo mechanism similar to the one that is active in Earth's interior., Comment: Accepted by ApJL

Stars which are rapidly rotating are expected to show high levels of activity according to the activity-rotation relation. However, previous TESS studies have found Ultra Fast Rotating (UFR) M dwarfs with periods less than one day displaying low levels of flaring activity. As a result, in this study, we utilise VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetric data of ten M dwarf UFR stars between spectral types $\sim$M2 - M6 all with $P_{\rm rot} <$ 1, to detect the presence of a magnetic field. We divide our sample into rotation period bins of equal size, with one star having many more flares in the TESS lightcurve than the other. We also provide an analysis of the long-term variability within our sample using TESS lightcurves taken during Cycles 1 and 3 (up to three years apart). We identify 605 flares from our sample which have energies between 2.0$\times$10$^{31}$ and 5.4$\times$10$^{34}$ erg. Although we find no significance difference in the flare rate between the Cycles, two of our targets display changes in their lightcurve morphology, potentially caused by a difference in the spot distribution. Overall, we find five stars (50%) in our sample have a detectable magnetic field with strengths $\sim$1 - 2 kG. Of these five, four were the more flare active stars within the period bins with one being the less flare active star. It would appear the magnetic field strength may not be the answer to the lack of flaring activity and supersaturation or magnetic field configuration may play a role. Observations made using TESS revealed a sample of low mass stars which show a periodic modulation on a period $<0.2$~d. Surprisingly many of these Ultra Fast Rotating (UFR) stars showed no evidence of flare activity which would be expected from such rapidly rotating stars. We present results from a spectroscopic survey of UFRs using the Nordic Optical Telescope to search for radial velocity variations which could reveal evidence for binarity. Our sample of 29 sources have a photometric period between 0.1-0.2d, cover spectral classes of M0-4V, and show no evidence for flares. We detect only one source with clear radial velocity shifts, with another two having Gaia RUWE values which suggests they are binaries. Further observations reveal the former star possibly contains a brown dwarf companion with a mass of M$_2$>58 M$_{\rm Jup}$ and probability P(M$_2$<90 M$_{\rm Jup}$) = 50\%. There is no evidence for the companion in our spectra, strengthening the case for a brown dwarf companion. We also examine the folded TESS light curves of all our targets, finding at least two are eclipsing binaries and one which has been contaminated by a spatially nearby $\delta$ Sct star. We estimate that around 1/4 of our targets may have been contaminated by short period variable stars. However, the majority of our targets are consistent with being single, low mass stars whose variability is due to starspots. Circular polarisation measurements of white dwarfs of various ages and spectral types are useful to understand the origin and evolution of the magnetic field in degenerate stars. In the latest stages of white dwarf evolution, when stars are so cool that spectral lines are no longer formed in the normal H- or He-dominated atmospheres, magnetic fields can be probed only by means of circular polarimetry of the continuum. The study of the fields of featureless DC white dwarfs may reveal whether Ohmic decay acts on magnetic white dwarfs, or if magnetic fields continue to be generated even several billion years after white dwarf formation. Compared to spectropolarimetry, broad-band circular polarisation measurements have the advantage of reaching a higher accuracy in the continuum, with the potential of detecting magnetic fields as weak as a fraction of a MG in DC stars, if the telescope size is adequate for the star's magnitude. Here we present the results of a first (short) observing campaign with the DIPol-UF polarimeter, which we have used to measure broad-band circular polarisation of white dwarfs. Our observing run was in part aimed to fully characterise the instrument, and in part to study the relationship between magnetic field strength (when known from spectropolarimetry) and circular polarisation of the continuum. We also observed a small number of previously unexplored DC white dwarfs, and we present the discovery of two new magnetic white dwarfs of spectral class DC, probably the first discovery of this kind made with broad-band circular polarimetric techniques since the late 1970s. We also discuss the characteristics of our instrument, and predict the level of polarimetric accuracy that may be reached as a function of stellar magnitude, exposure time, and telescope size., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We report our new spectropolarimetric observations for 67P dust over 4,000--9,000 Angstrom using the ESO/Very Large Telescope in January--March 2016 (phase angle ranging $\sim$26--5 deg) to constrain the properties of the dust particles of 67P and therefrom diagnose the dust environment of its coma and near-surface layer at around the end of the Southern summer of the comet. We examined the optical behaviours of the dust, which, together with Rosetta colour data, were used to search for dust evolution with cometocentric distance. Modelling was also conducted to identify the dust attributes compatible with the results. The spectral dependence of the polarisation degree of 67P dust is flatter than found in other dynamical groups of comets in similar observing geometry. The depth of its negative polarisation branch appears to be a bit shallower than in long-period comets and might be getting shallower as 67P repeats its apparitions. Its dust colour shows a change in slope around 5,500 Angstrom, (17.3 $\pm$ 1.4) and (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) % (1,000 Angstrom)$^{\rm -1}$ for shortward and longward of the wavelength, respectively, which are slightly redder but broadly consistent with the average of Jupiter-Family comets. Observations of 67P dust in this study can be attributed to dust agglomerates of $\sim$100 $\mu$m in size detected by Rosetta in early 2016. A porosity of 60 % shows the best match with our polarimetric results, yielding a dust density of $\sim$770 kg m$^{\rm -3}$. Compilation of Rosetta and our data indicates the dust's reddening with increasing nucleus distance, which may be driven by water-ice sublimation as the dust moves out of the nucleus. We estimate the possible volume fraction of water ice in the initially ejected dust as $\sim$6 % (i.e. the refractory-to-ice volume ratio of $\sim$14)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Twin STEREO spacecraft pre-perihelion photometric and polarimetric observations of the sungrazing Kreutz comet C/2010 E6 (STEREO) in March 2010 at heliocentric distances $3-28~R_{\odot}$ were investigated using a newly-created set of analysis routines. The comet fully disintegrated during its perihelion passage. Prior to that, a broadening and an increase of the intensity peak with decreasing heliocentric distance was accompanied by a drop to zero polarisation at high phase angles (~105-135{\deg}, STEREO-B) and the emergence of negative polarisation at low phase angles (~25-35{\deg}, STEREO-A). Outside the near-comet region, the tail exhibited a steep slope of increasing polarisation with increasing cometocentric distance, with the slope becoming less prominent as the comet approached the Sun. The steep slope may be attributed to sublimation of refractory organic matrix and the processing of dust grains, or to presence of amorphous carbon. The change in slope with proximity to the Sun is likely caused by the gradual sublimation of all refractory material. The polarisation signatures observed at both sets of phase angles closer to the comet photocentre as the comet approached the Sun are best explained by fragmentation of the nucleus, exposing fresh Mg-rich silicate particles, followed by their gradual sublimation. Scattering processes in the atmospheres of planets cause characteristic features that can be particularly well observed in polarisation. For planet Earth, both molecular and scattering by small particles imprint specific signatures in its phase curve. An unequivocal prediction of a liquid-water-loaded atmosphere is the existence of a rainbow feature at a scattering angle of around 138-144deg. Earthshine allows us to observe the primary rainbow in linear polarisation. We observed polarisation spectra of Earthshine using FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope for phase angles from 33deg to 65deg (Sun--Earth--Moon angle). The spectra were used to derive the degree of polarisation in the B, V, R, and I passbands and the phase curve from 33deg to 136deg . The new observations extend to the smallest phases that can be observed from the ground. The degree of polarisation of planet Earth is increasing for decreasing phase angles downwards of 45deg. From comparison of the phase curve observed with models of an Earth-type atmosphere we are able to determine the refractive index of water and to constrain the mean water droplet sizes to 6-7 mum. Furthermore, we can retrieve the mean cloud fraction of liquid water clouds to 0.3, and the mean optical depth of the water clouds to values between 10 and 20. Our observations allow us to discern two fundamentally different scattering mechanisms of the atmosphere of planet Earth: molecular and particle scattering. The physical and chemical properties can be retrieved with high fidelity through suitable inversion of the phase curve. Current burning issues in stellar physics, for both hot and cool stars, concern their magnetism. In hot stars, stable magnetic fields of fossil origin impact their stellar structure and circumstellar environment, with a likely major role in stellar evolution. However, this role is complex and thus poorly understood as of today. It needs to be quantified with high-resolution UV spectropolarimetric measurements. In cool stars, UV spectropolarimetry would provide access to the structure and magnetic field of the very dynamic upper stellar atmosphere, providing key data for new progress to be made on the role of magnetic fields in heating the upper atmospheres, launching stellar winds, and more generally in the interaction of cool stars with their environment (circumstellar disk, planets) along their whole evolution. We report the discovery of a new magnetic DA white dwarf (WD), WD0011-721, which is located within the very important 20pc volume-limited sample of the closest WDs to the Sun. This star has a mean field modulus <|B|> of 343 kG, and from the polarisation signal we deduce a line-of-sight field component of 75 kG. The magnetic field is sufficiently weak to have escaped detection in classification spectra. We then present a preliminary exploration of the data concerning the frequency of such fields among WDs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres (DA stars). We find that 20 +- 5% of the DA WDs in this volume have magnetic fields, mostly weaker than 1 MG. Unlike the slow field decay found among the magnetic Bp stars of the upper main sequence, the WDs in this sample show no evidence of magnetic field or flux changes over several Gyr.

Some of the white dwarfs exhibit among the strongest magnetic fields in the universe. Many of these degenerate magnetic stars are also rotating very slowly. Among these objects, Grw+70$^\circ$\,8247, with its century-long suspected rotation period and its 400\,MG magnetic field, stands as a particularly interesting object. Surprisingly, for this star, the first white dwarf in which a magnetic field was discovered, no spectropolarimetric observations have been discussed in the literature in the last 40 years. Here we present two sets of linear and circular polarisation spectra taken in 2015 and 2018, and we compare them with spectropolarimetric data obtained in the 1970s. Polarisation shows variability over a time interval of four decades, but some subtle changes may have been detected even over a three year time interval. Using the variation of the polarisation position angle as a proxy for the rotation of the magnetic axis in the plane of the sky, we conclude that the star's rotation period probably lies in the range of $10^2$ to $10^3$ years. Our data analysis is accompanied by a description of our various calibrations and tests of the ISIS instrument at the William Herschel Telescope that may be of general interest for linear spectropolarimetric measurements. Magnetic fields are present in roughly 10% of white dwarfs. These fields affect the structure and evolution of such stars, and may provide clues about their earlier evolution history. Particularly important for statistical studies is the collection of high-precision spectropolarimetric observations of (1) complete magnitude-limited samples and (2) complete volume-limited samples of white dwarfs. In the course of one of our surveys we have discovered previously unknown kG-level magnetic fields on two nearby white dwarfs, WD1105-340 and WD2150+591. Both stars are brighter than m_V = 15. WD2150+591 is within the 20-pc volume around the Sun, while WD1105-340 is just beyond 25 pc in distance. These discoveries increase the small sample of such weak-field white dwarfs from 21 to 23 stars. Our data appear consistent with roughly dipolar field topology, but it also appears that the surface field structure may be more complex on the older star than on the younger one, a result similar to one found earlier in our study of the weak-field stars WD2034+372 and WD2359-434. This encourages further efforts to uncover a clear link between magnetic morphology and stellar evolution.

We present a comprehensive set of spectropolarimetric observations of Earthshine as obtained by FORS2 at the VLT for phase angles from 50degree to 135degree (Sun-Earth-Moon angle), covering a spectral range from 430nm to 920nm. The degree of polarization in BVRI passbands, the differential polarization vegetation index, and the equivalent width of the O2A polarization band around 760nm are determined with absolute errors around 0.1 percent in the degree of polarization. Earthshine polarization spectra are corrected for the effect of depolarization introduced by backscattering on the lunar surface, introducing systematic errors of the order of 1 percent in the degree of polarization. Distinct viewing sceneries such as observing the Atlantic or Pacific side in Earthshine yield statistically different phase curves. The equivalent width defined for the O2A band polarization is found to vary from -5nm to +2nm. A differential polarized vegetation index is introduced and reveals a larger vegetation signal for those viewing sceneries that contain larger fractions of vegetated surface areas. We corroborate the observed correlations with theoretical models from the literature, and conclude that the Vegetation Red Edge(VRE) is a robust and sensitive signature in polarization spectra of planet Earth. The overall behaviour of polarization of planet Earth in the continuum and in the O2A band can be explained by existing models. Biosignatures such as the O2A band and the VRE are detectable in Earthshine polarization with a high degree of significance and sensitivity. An in-depth understanding of Earthshines temporal and spectral variability requires improved models of Earths biosphere, as a prerequisite to interpret possible detections of polarised biosignatures in earthlike exoplanets in the future., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables

Our knowledge of the magnetism in white dwarfs is based on an observational dataset that is biased in favour of stars with very strong magnetic fields. Most of the field measurements available in the literature have a relatively low sensitivity, while current instruments allow us to detect magnetic fields of white dwarfs with sub-kG precision. With the aim of obtaining a more complete view of the incidence of magnetic fields in degenerate stars, we have started a long-term campaign of high-precision spectropolarimetric observations of white dwarfs. Here we report the results obtained so far with the low-resolution FORS2 instrument of the ESO VLT and the medium-resolution ISIS instrument of the WHT. We have considered a sample of 48 stars, of which five are known magnetic or suspected magnetic stars, and obtained new longitudinal magnetic field measurements with a mean uncertainty of about 0.6 kG. Overall, in the course of our survey (the results of which have been partially published in papers devoted to individual stars) we have discovered one new weak-field magnetic white dwarf, confirmed the magnetic nature of another, found that a suspected magnetic star is not magnetic, and suggested two new candidate magnetic white dwarfs. Even combined with data previously obtained in the literature, our sample is not sufficient yet to reach any final conclusions about the actual incidence of very weak magnetic fields in white dwarfs, but we have set the basis to achieve a homogeneous survey of an unbiased sample of white dwarfs. As a by-product, our survey has also enabled us to carry out a detailed characterisation of the ISIS and the FORS2 instruments for the detection of extremely weak magnetic fields in white dwarfs, and in particular to relate the S/N to measurement uncertainty for white dwarfs of different spectral types. All known Galactic Of?p stars have been shown to host strong, organized, magnetic fields. Recently, five Of?p stars have been discovered in the Magellanic Clouds. They posses photometric \citep{Naze} and spectroscopic \citep{Walborn} variability compatible with the Oblique Rotator Model (ORM). However, their magnetic fields have yet to be directly detected. We have developed an algorithm allowing for the synthesis of photometric observables based on the Analytic Dynamical Magnetosphere (ADM) model of \citet{Owocki}. We apply our model to OGLE photometry in order to constrain their magnetic geometries and surface dipole strengths. We predict that the field strengths for some of these candidate extra-Galactic magnetic stars may be within the detection limits of the FORS2 instrument., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We explore the hypothesis that the Eureka family of sub-km asteroids in the L5 region of Mars could have formed in a collision. We estimate the size distribution index from available information on family members; model the orbital dispersion of collisional fragments; and carry out a formal calculation of the collisional lifetime as a function of size. We find that, as initially conjectured by Rivkin et al (2003), the collisional lifetime of objects the size of (5261) Eureka is at least a few Gyr, significantly longer than for similar-sized Main Belt asteroids. In contrast, the observed degree of orbital compactness is inconsistent with all but the least energetic family-forming collisions. Therefore, the family asteroids may be ejecta from a cratering event sometime in the past ~1 Gyr if the orbits are gradually dispersed by gravitational diffusion and the Yarkovsky effect (Cuk et al, 2015). The comparable sizes of the largest family members require either negligible target strength or a particular impact geometry under this scenario (Durda et al, 2007; Benavidez et al, 2012). Alternatively, the family may have formed by a series of YORP-induced fission events (Pravec.et.al, 2010). The shallow size distribution of the family is similar to that of small MBAs (Gladman et al, 2009) interpreted as due to the dominance of this mechanism for Eureka-family-sized asteroids (Jacobson et al, 2014). However, our population index estimate is likely a lower limit due to the small available number of family asteroids and observational incompleteness. Ground-based observations of the Earthshine, i.e., the light scattered by Earth to the Moon, and then reflected back to Earth, simulate space observations of our planet and represent a powerful benchmark for the studies of Earth-like planets. Earthshine spectra are strongly linearly polarized, owing to scattering by molecules and small particles in the atmosphere of the Earth and surface reflection, and may allow us to measure global atmospheric and surface properties of planet Earth. Aims. We aim to interpret already published spectropolarimetric observations of the Earthshine by comparing them with new radiative transfer model simulations including a fully realistic three-dimensional (3D) surface-atmosphere model for planet Earth. We used the highly advanced Monte Carlo radiative transfer model MYSTIC to simulate polarized radiative transfer in the atmosphere of the Earth without approximations regarding the geometry, taking into account the polarization from surface reflection and multiple scattering by molecules, aerosol particles, cloud droplets, and ice crystals. We have shown that Earth spectropolarimetry is highly sensitive to all these input parameters, and we have presented simulations of a fully realistic Earth atmosphere-surface model including 3D cloud fields and two-dimensional (2D) surface property maps. Our modeling results show that scattering in high ice water clouds and reflection from the ocean surface are crucial to explain the continuum polarization at longer wavelengths as has been reported in Earthshine observations taken at the Very Large Telescope in 2011 (3.8 % and 6.6 % at 800 nm, depending on which part of Earth was visible from the Moon at the time of the observations). We found that the relatively high degree of polarization of 6.6 % can be attributed to light reflected by the ocean surface in the sunglint region.

(abridged version) Context : The detection of bright, hard, and variable X-ray emission in Tr16-22 prompted spectropolarimetric observations of this star, which in turn led to the discovery of a surface magnetic field. Aims : We want to further constrain the properties of this star, in particular to verify whether X-ray variations are correlated to changes in optical emission lines and magnetic field strength, as expected from the oblique rotator model that is widely accepted for magnetic O stars. Methods: We have obtained new low-resolution spectropolarimetric and long-term high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring of Tr16-22, and we also analyse new, serendipitous X-ray data. Results: The new X-ray observations are consistent with previous data, but their addition does not help to solve the ambiguity in the variation timescale because of numerous aliases. No obvious periodicity or any large variations are detected in the spectropolarimetric data of Tr16-22 obtained over three months. The derived field values appear to be in line with previous measurements, suggesting constancy of the field (though the possibility of small, short-term field variations cannot be excluded). Variations in the equivalent widths of Halpha are very small, and they do not appear to be related to the X-ray timescale; the overall lack of large variations in optical emission lines is consistent with the magnetic field constancy. We have obtained imaging polarimetry of the comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy) with 2-Channel-Focal-Reducer Rozhen instrument at 2m Ritchey-Chr\'etien-Coud\'e telescope of the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen in two dust continuum filters covering wavelength intervals clear from molecular emissions and centred at $4430\AA$ in (blue filter) and at $6840\AA$ in (red filter). In imaging mode we measured the degree of linear polarisation $17.01\pm0.09$% in the blue and $18.81\pm0.02$% in the red, which is in a very good agreement with measurements of other comets at the similar phase angle. We have also obtained polarisation maps in both filters. We found a strong correlation between the spatial distribution of the polarisation and the dust colour. Spectropolarimetry of the nucleus region shows an increase of the polarisation with wavelength, and a depolarisation in the spectral regions with gas emission lines, most noticeable in C$_2$ emission band, which shows a polarisation of $6.0\pm1.1$%., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, ACM2014 conference proceedings

Optical spectroscopic monitoring has been conducted of two O stars in the Small and one in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the spectral characteristics of which place them in the Of?p category, which has been established in the Galaxy to consist of oblique magnetic rotators. All of these Magellanic stars show systematic spectral variations typical of the Of?p class, further strengthening their magnetic candidacy to the point of virtual certainty. The spectral variations are related to photometric variations derived from OGLE data by Naze et al. (2015) in a parallel study, which yields rotational periods for two of them. Now circular spectropolarimetry is required to measure their fields, and ultraviolet spectroscopy to further characterize their low-metallicity, magnetically confined winds, in support of hydrodynamical analyses., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication by AJ

The low-resolution, Cassegrain mounted, FORS spectropolarimeter of the ESO Very Large Telescope is being extensively used for magnetic field surveys. Some of the new discoveries suggest that relatively strong magnetic fields may play an important role in numerous physical phenomena observed in the atmospheres as well as in the circumstellar environments of certain kinds of stars. We show in detail how small instabilities or data-reduction inaccuracies represent an alternative explanation for the origin of certain signals of circular polarisation published in recent years. With the help of analytical calculations we simulate the observation of a spectral line in spectropolarimetric mode, adding very small spurious wavelength shifts, which may mimic the effects of seeing variations, rapid variations of the stellar radial velocity, or instrument instabilities. As a case study, we then re-visit the FORS2 measurements that have been used to claim the discovery of a magnetic field in the A0 supergiant HD 92207. In addition, we present new observations of this star obtained with the HARPSpol instrument. Both calibration and science data show compelling evidence that photon-noise is not the only source of error in magnetic field measurements, especially in sharp spectral lines. Non-photon noise may be kept under control by accurate data reduction and quality controls. Our re-analysis of FORS2 observations of HD 92207 shows no evidence of a magnetic field, and we are able to reproduce the previous FORS detection only by degrading the quality of our wavelength calibration. Our HARPSpol spectropolarimetric measurements show no evidence of a magnetic field at the level of 10 G., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A. Most of the planetary nebulae (PN) have bipolar or other non-spherically symmetric shapes. The presence of a magnetic field in the central star may be the reason for this lack of symmetry, but observational works published in the literature have so far reported contradictory results. We try to correlate the presence of a magnetic field with the departures from the spherical geometry of the envelopes of planetary nebulae. We determine the magnetic field from spectropolarimetric observations of ten central stars of planetary nebulae. The results of the analysis of the observations of four stars was previously presented and discussed in the literature, while the observations of six stars, plus additional measurements for a star previously observed, are presented here for the first time. All our determinations of magnetic field in the central planetary nebulae are consistent with null results. Our field measurements have a typical error bar of 150-300 G. Previous spurious field detections obtained with FORS were probably due to the use of different wavelength calibration solutions for frames obtained at different position angles of the retarder waveplate. Detection of magnetic fields has been reported in several sdO and sdB stars. Recent literature has cast doubts on the reliability of most of these detections. We revisit data previously published in the literature, and we present new observations to clarify the question of how common magnetic fields are in subdwarf stars. We consider a sample of about 40 hot subdwarf stars. About 30 of them have been observed with the FORS1 and FORS2 instruments of the ESO VLT. Here we present new FORS1 field measurements for 17 stars, 14 of which have never been observed for magnetic fields before. We also critically review the measurements already published in the literature, and in particular we try to explain why previous papers based on the same FORS1 data have reported contradictory results. All new and re-reduced measurements obtained with FORS1 are shown to be consistent with non-detection of magnetic fields. We explain previous spurious field detections from data obtained with FORS1 as due to a non-optimal method of wavelength calibration. Field detections in other surveys are found to be uncertain or doubtful, and certainly in need of confirmation. There is presently no strong evidence for the occurrence of a magnetic field in any sdB or sdO star, with typical longitudinal field uncertainties of the order of 2-400 G. It appears that globally simple fields of more than about 1 or 2 kG in strength occur in at most a few percent of hot subdwarfs, and may be completely absent at this strength. Further high-precision surveys, both with high-resolution spectropolarimeters and with instruments similar to FORS1 on large telescopes, would be very valuable.

Recently announced magnetic models for four SPB and {\beta} Cep stars, along with magnetic detections for two additional stars, have potentially doubled the number of known magnetic SPB and \beta Cep stars (see Grunhut et al., these proceedings). We have reanalyzed the published data and re-reduced archival low resolution spectropolarimetry collected with the FORS1/2 instruments at VLT on which the models were based, and compare them with high resolution data from the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT, investigating previously noted inconsistencies between results from the two instruments., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, StarPol: Stellar Polarimetry from Birth to Death

A high percentage of the astrophysically important RR Lyrae stars show a periodic amplitude and/or phase modulation of their pulsation cycles. More than a century after its discovery, this "Blazhko effect" still lacks acceptable theoretical understanding. In one of the plausible models for explaining the phenomenon, the modulation is caused by the effects of a magnetic field. So far, the available observational data have not allowed us to either support nor rule out the presence of a magnetic field in RR Lyrae stars. We intend to determine whether RR Lyrae stars are generally characterized by the presence of a magnetic field organized on a large scale. With the help of the FORS1 instrument at the ESO VLT we performed a spectropolarimetric survey of 17 relatively bright southern RR Lyrae stars, both Blazhko stars and non-modulated stars, and determined their mean longitudinal magnetic field with a typical error bar < 30 G. All our measurements of the mean longitudinal magnetic field resulted in null detections within 3 sigma. From our data we can set an upper limit for the strength of the dipole component of the magnetic fields of RR Lyrae stars to ~ 130 G. Because of the limitations intrinsic to the diagnostic technique, we cannot exclude the presence of higher order multipolar components. The collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 generated a bright cloud of dust which dissipated during several days after the impact. The brightness variations of this cloud and the changes of its position and shape are governed by the physical properties of the dust grains. We use a Monte Carlo model to describe the evolution of the post-impact dust plume.
