The connection of the microbiome to human health intersects with the physical environment of humans, and this connection can function as a system of influence on human health through the environment’s influence on the microbiome. Physical environment factors reported in the literature include the influence of indoor water sources and building materials, number of individuals within a household, and greenspace (trees, grass areas) within a residential neighborhood (Ishaq et al. 2021). These environmental factors form the basis for a geographic influences on the microbiome. Moreover, because these influences on the microbiome differ by not only geography, but also by socioeconomic position the physical environment factors may coalesce within a neighborhood. To date the literature has sparsely focused on the neighborhood or individual socioeconomic connection to the gut microbiome (Harrison and Taren, 2018; Ishaq et al. 2021). Direct influential factors based on neighborhood or individual level socioeconomic status may include diet, chronic stress, and disparities in exposures to caesarean births and breastfeeding (Harrison and Taren, 2018). Additionally, neighborhood socioeconomic status can lead to exposure to environmental pollutants that increase microbiome metabolites linked to cardiovascular disease, such as trimethylamine N-oxide (Farmer et al. 2021).
