Abstract

The noncentrosymmetric crystals Hg3CdCl2(SCN)6 and Hg4CdBr4(SCN)6 with, respectively, R3c and Fmm2 space group symmetry have been synthesised suggesting an engineering route of nonlinear optical crystals with a large transparency bandwidth. 26. Crystal engineering of neutral N-arylpyrimidinones and their HCl and HNO<SUB>3</SUB> adducts with a C–H⋯O supramolecular synthon. Implications for non-linear optics

Abstract

In a previous crystallographic study of some N-arylpyrimidinones 1, we noted that: (1) C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds connect molecules in a linear array; (2) the charge transfer axis of the chromophore is aligned with the main symmetry operator of point groups 2 or m at ca. 57°, a value that is close to the ideal angle of 54.74°; (3) the methyl and chloro derivatives are isostructural. In this paper, we report the characterisation of chloride and nitrate salt adducts of 1 by X-ray diffraction and the analysis of their packing motifs. Recurrence of the same C–H⋯O supramolecular synthon in three neutral and five HCl and HNO3 adducts of 1 signifies the robustness of this weak hydrogen bond. The occurrence of a mirror plane m in a family of eight crystal structures (four Pnma, two P21/m, one Pbcm, and one Pmn21) is unusual because this symmetry operation is generally avoided due to close packing considerations. Ab initio calculations show that the bisected phenyl conformation present in these crystal structures is the most stable conformation of the pyrimidinone molecule. The presence of aryl and pyrimidinone chromophores in 1, the correct alignment of the aromatic ring in the crystal and the occurrence of 2D polar layers in some crystal structures are favourable factors for non-linear optical applications. However, a strategy for the crystallisation of these achiral molecules in non-centrosymmetric space groups is yet to be achieved. This crystal engineering study simplifies the challenge of complete 3D structural control into a modular 2D + 1D problem.

Abstract

The title compound, alternatively sodium pyridin-2-olate trihydrate, Na+·C5H3N2O3−·3H2O, crystallizes in the P space group. It is made up of edge-shared chains of NaO6 octahedra with five water mol­ecules and one 5-nitro-2-pyridonate anion. Four of these water mol­ecules are bicoordinating, involved in connecting the adjacent octahedra, and the fifth is coordinated to only one octahedron. The crystal structure is stabilized by a network of strong O-H⃛O and O-H⃛N interactions. The organic moieties occupy the space between the chains with an antiparallel alignment. 35. Crystal Structure of a Cadmium Iodate Monohydrate: Cd(IO3)2·H2O

Abstract

Single crystals of Cd(IO3)2·H2O are obtained by slow evaporation of aqueous solutions of CdCl2and KIO3. This compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1¯ [a = 7.119(2), b = 7.952(2), c = 6.646(2)Å, α = 102.17(2)°, β = 114.13(2)°, γ = 66.78(4)°]. The structure consists in Cd — (μ2‐O)2— Cd dimers with a metal — metal distance of 3.74Å. These dimers are connected through two iodate bridges resulting in layers parallel to the (010) plane. The 3D linkage is ensured by I1 — O1 long bonds (2.775Å).

Abstract

The noncentrosymmetric material Hg(IO3)2 with P21 space group symmetry has been synthesised. This compound is thermally very stable (520 °C) and shows a NLO efficiency visually comparable to that of lithium iodate. The crystal structure has been solved in order to relate this efficiency to the IO3 chomophore packing. Simple calculations, based on the bond additivity model, show that both I&z.sbnd;O and Hg&z.sbnd;O bonds contribute to SHG tensor. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
