We report the first measurements of HO2 uptake coefficients, γ, for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles and for the well-studied model compound sucrose which we doped with copper(II). Above 65% relative humidity (RH), γ for copper(II)-doped sucrose aerosol particles equalled the surface mass accommodation coefficient α = 0.22±0.06, but it decreased to γ = 0.012±0.007 upon decreasing the RH to 17 %. The trend of γ with RH can be explained by an increase in aerosol viscosity and the contribution of a surface reaction, as demonstrated using the kinetic multilayer model of aerosol surface and bulk chemistry (KM-SUB). At high RH the total uptake was driven by reaction in the near-surface bulk and limited by mass accommodation, whilst at low RH it was limited by surface reaction. SOA from two different precursors, α-pinene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB), was investigated, yielding low uptake coefficients of γ < 0.001 and γ = 0.004±0.002, respectively. It is postulated that the larger values measured for TMB-derived SOA compared to α-pinene-derived SOA are either due to differing viscosity, a different liquid water content of the aerosol particles, or an HO2 + RO2 reaction occurring within the aerosol particles.

The α-dicarbonyl compounds glyoxal (CHOCHO) and methyl glyoxal (CH3C(O)CHO) are produced in the atmosphere by the oxidation of hydrocarbons and emitted directly from pyrogenic sources. Measurements of ambient concentrations inform about the rate of hydrocarbon oxidation, oxidative capacity, and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. We present results from a comprehensive instrument comparison effort at two simulation chamber facilities in the US and Europe that included nine instruments, and seven different measurement techniques: broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (BBCEAS), cavity-enhanced differential optical absorption spectroscopy (CE-DOAS), white-cell DOAS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR, two separate instruments), laser-induced phosphorescence (LIP), solid-phase micro extraction (SPME), and proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS, two separate instruments; for methyl glyoxal only because no significant response was observed for glyoxal). Experiments at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) compare three independent sources of calibration as a function of temperature (293-330 K). Calibrations from absorption cross-section spectra at UV-visible and IR wavelengths are found to agree within 2% for glyoxal, and 4% for methyl glyoxal at all temperatures; further calibrations based on ion-molecule rate constant calculations agreed within 5% for methyl glyoxal at all temperatures. At the European Photoreactor (EUPHORE) all measurements are calibrated from the same UV-visible spectra (either directly or indirectly), thus minimizing potential systematic bias. We find excellent linearity under idealizedconditions (pure glyoxal or methyl glyoxal, R2 > 0:96), and in complex gas mixtures characteristic of dry photochemical smog systems (o-xylene/NOx and isoprene/NOx, R2 > 0:95; R2 ∼ 0:65 for offline SPME measurements of methyl glyoxal). The correlations are more variable in humid ambient air mixtures (RH>45 %) for methyl glyoxal (0:58 < R2 < 0:68) than for glyoxal (0:79 < R2 < 0:99). The intercepts of correlations were insignificant for the most part (below the instruments' experimentally determined detection limits); slopes further varied by less than 5% for instruments that could also simultaneously measure NO2. For glyoxal and methyl glyoxal the slopes varied by less than 12 and 17% (both 3-σ) between direct absorption techniques (i.e., calibration from knowledge of the absorption cross section). We find a larger variability among in situ techniques that employ external calibration sources (75-90 %, 3-σ), and/or techniques that employ offline analysis. Our intercomparison reveals existing differences in reports about precision and detection limits in the literature, and enables comparison on a common basis by observing a common air mass. Finally, we evaluate the influence of interfering species (e.g., NO2, O3 and H2O) of relevance in field and laboratory applications. Techniques now exist to conduct fast and accurate measurements of glyoxal at ambient concentrations, and methyl glyoxal under simulated conditions. However, techniques to measure methyl glyoxal at ambient concentrations remain a challenge, and would be desirable.

This research presents a novel electrochemical approach for the selective measurement of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides, which is pivotal in many fields. The study details the development of an advanced sensor using a one-pot, one-step synthesis to embed platinum nanoparticles within a 3D-polymeric matrix of poly (brilliant green) on screen-printed carbon electrodes. The modified surfaces were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results obtained by amperometry showed that, at 0.1 V, only H 2 O 2 produced an electrochemical signal, while, at higher potential (0.5 V), all the hydroperoxides tested exhibited an electrochemical signal. Sensitivities obtained for H 2 O 2 by flow injection analysis were 431 ± 3 and 465 ± 4 μC mM -1 at 0.1 and 0.5 V, respectively, with detection limits (S/N = 3) 116 and 30 nM, respectively. For organic hydroperoxides, sensitivities ranged from 22.3 to 32.6 μC mM -1 at 0.5 V, and limits of detection from 1.15 to 5.95 μM. Chemometric analysis indicated the sensor can satisfactorily measure H 2 O 2 in the presence of the organic hydroperoxides herein analysed. The proposed sensor showed excellent properties in terms of repeatability, reproducibility and stability, with minimal interference. The reliability of the sensor was verified by measuring hydroperoxides spiked in aqueous extracts from real air quality monitoring filters. Indoor air in residential dwellings can contain a variety of chemicals, sometimes present at concentrations or in combinations which can have a negative impact on human health. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) surveys are often required to characterize human exposure or to investigate IAQ concerns and complaints. Such surveys should include sufficient contextual information to elucidate sources, pathways, and the magnitude of exposures. The aim of this review was to investigate and describe the parameters that affect IAQ in residential dwellings: building location, layout, and ventilation, finishing materials, occupant activities, and occupant demography. About 180 peer-reviewed articles, published from 01/2013 to 09/2021 (plus some important earlier publications), were reviewed. The importance of the building parameters largely depends on the study objectives and whether the focus is on a specific pollutant or to assess health risk. When considering classical pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the building parameters can have a significant impact on IAQ, and detailed information of these parameters needs to be reported in each study. Research gaps and suggestions for the future studies together with recommendation of where measurements should be done are also provided., (© 2022 The Authors. Hydroperoxides play important roles in atmospheric chemical processes since they act as strong oxidants. This paper details with the modification, characterization and performance of different carbon-based screen-printed electrodes to develop a sensor that allows to analyze organic and inorganic hydroperoxides in atmospheric samples. Commercial electrodes made up of graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide were electrochemically activated and subsequently modified by layer-by-layer method with a conducting polymer of azure-A and electrodeposited platinum nanoparticles. Characterization of modified electrodes was performed by FE-SEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy. Even though all modified carbonaceous substrates enabled the development of competitive electrochemical sensors for (in)organic hydroperoxides detection, carbon nanotubes underlying substrate exhibited the best performances in terms of sensitivity, stability, limit of detection and linear range. This amperometric sensor displayed linear responses to hydroperoxides over 0.081-450 μM with detection limits in the range of 24-558 nM and sensitivity values among 0.0628±1.6E-4 and 0.0112±0.71E-4 μA/μM for the different hydroperoxides herein studied. The developed electrochemical sensor was successfully applied to the analysis of (in)organic hydroperoxides in rainwater samples. Measurements in rainwater were performed in a city located in the East of Spain and collected at two different sites (downtown and suburban area) on two different dates (July and November 2020). The aqueous-phase and surface reactions of ozone (O 3 ) with iodide (I - ) in/on seawater have been recently found to be a strong atmospheric source of iodine. In addition, ozone also reacts with I - in solid and aqueous sea-salt aerosol. However, the primary products of the heterogeneous reactions of ozone with I - have not been clarified. In this paper, solid and aqueous KI aerosols have been exposed to ozone in an aerosol flow tube system and I - and iodate (IO 3 - ) concentrations have been measured by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results of these experiments have been combined with a kinetic model to elucidate the primary products of the aqueous and surface reactions. The reaction of ozone with aqueous iodide has been inferred to originate different products depending on whether it occurs at the surface via O 3 adsorption (product I 2 - ) or in the aqueous phase via O 3 solvation (product IO - ). The surface reaction of ozone with solid KI in the presence of water vapor forms KIO 3 , and other species, which are likely to be gaseous. Although the reactions have been studied in aerosols, the results can be extrapolated to aqueous solutions as well.

The heterogeneous interactions of gaseous ozone (O3) with seawater and with sea-salt aerosols are known to generate volatile halogen species, which, in turn, lead to further destruction of O3. Here, a kinetic model for the interaction of ozone (O3) with Br- and I- solutions and aqueous particles has been proposed that satisfactorily explains previous literature studies about this process. Apart from the aqueous-phase reactions X- + O3 (X = I, Br), the interaction also involves the surface reactions X- + O3 that occur via O3 adsorption on the aqueous surface. In single salt solutions and aerosols, the partial order in ozone and the total order of the surface reactions are one, but the apparent total order is second order because the number of ozone sites where reaction can occur is equal to the surficial concentration of X- ([X-]surf). In the presence of Cl-, the surface reactions are enhanced by a factor equal to , where and . Therefore, we have inferred that Cl- acts as a catalyst in the surface reactions X- + O3. The model has been applied to estimate ozone uptake by the reaction with these halides in/on seawater and in/on sea-salt aerosol, where it has been concluded that the Cl--catalyzed surface reaction is important relative to total ozone uptake and should therefore be considered to model Y/YO (Y = I, Br, Cl) levels in the troposphere.

The formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) generated by irradiating styrene in the presence and/or absence of OH, NOx, H 2 O vapour and seed aerosol has been investigated for the first time. Experiments were conducted in a smog chamber at 298 K and atmospheric pressure. Styrene decay was measured by gas chromatography with a mass spectrometric detector (GC-MS), and the temporal evolution of the aerosol was monitored using a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS). The SOA yield increases as the initial styrene concentration increases, leading to yields ranging from 1.8% to 3.5% for styrene photolysis, and from 2.4% to 5.0% for its photooxidation. In both cases, the organic aerosol formation can be expressed by a one-product gas/particle partitioning absorption model. The particle number concentration, mass and yield decrease in the presence of NOx and seed aerosol but increase at higher relative humidity (RH). The gas phase and SOA composition were analysed offline using a filter/denuder sampling system simultaneously collecting gas- and particle-phase products. Benzaldehyde was confirmed as the main gas-phase product of the reaction. However, although products in the particle phase were detected, they could not be identified. Moreover, the aqueous filter extracts were analysed using UV-Visible spectrophotometry to determine differences in the optical properties of SOA produced in the presence and absence of NOx. The production of gas-phase hydroperoxyl radicals, HO2, is observed directly from sub-micron airborne TiO2 nanoparticles irradiated by 300-400 nm radiation. The rate of HO2 production as a function of O2 pressure follows Langmuir isotherm behaviour suggesting O2 is involved in the production of HO2 following its adsorption onto the surface of the TiO2 aerosol. Reduction of adsorbed O2 by photogenerated electrons is likely to be the initial step followed by reaction with a proton produced via oxidation of adsorbed water with a photogenerated hole. The rate of HO2 production decreased significantly over the range of relative humidities between 8.7 and 36.9%, suggesting competitive adsorption of water vapour inhibits HO2 production. From the data, the adsorption equilibrium constants were calculated to be: KO2 = 0.27 ± 0.02 Pa-1 and KH2O = 2.16 ± 0.12 Pa-1 for RH = 8.7%, decreasing to KO2 = 0.18 ± 0.01 Pa-1 and KH2O = 1.33 ± 0.04 Pa-1 at RH = 22.1%. The increased coverage of H2O onto the TiO2 aerosol surface may inhibit HO2 production by decreasing the effective surface area of the TiO2 particle and lowering the binding energy of O2 on the aerosol surface, hence shortening its desorption lifetime. The maximum yield (i.e. when [O2] is projected to atmospherically relevant levels) for production of gas-phase HO2, normalised for surface area and light intensity, was found to be at a RH of 8.7% for the 80% anatase and 20% rutile formulation of TiO2 used here. This yield decreased to as the RH was increased to 22.1%. Using this value, the rate of production of HO2 from TiO2 surfaces under atmospheric conditions was estimated to be in the range 5 × 104-1 × 106 molecule cm-3 s-1 using observed surface areas of mineral dust at Cape Verde, and assuming a TiO2 fraction of 4.5%. For the largest loadings of dust in the troposphere, the rate of this novel heterogeneous production mechanism begins to approach that of HO2 production from the gas-phase reaction of OH with CO in unpolluted regions. The production of gas-phase OH radicals could only be observed conclusively at high aerosol surface areas, and was attributed to the decomposition of H2O2 at the surface by photogenerated electrons.

The main source of atmospheric iodine is the heterogeneous reaction of aqueous iodide (I-) with ozone (O3), which takes place in surface seawater and probably in sea-salt aerosols. However, there are seemingly contradictory conclusions about whether this heterogeneous reaction occurs in the bulk of the aqueous phase, via O3 dissolution, or at the aqueous surface, via O3 adsorption. In this work, the ozone uptake coefficient has been calculated as a function of the concentration of aqueous iodide ([I-]aq) and gaseous ozone near the aqueous surface ([O3]gs) by estimating parameters of the resistor model using results of previous studies. The calculated uptake coefficients suggest that the aqueous-phase reaction dominates at low I- concentrations (about <10-4 mol L-1), regardless of [O3]gs, and also at sufficiently high [O3]gs (about >80 ppm), regardless of [I-]aq. In contrast, the surface reaction dominates at high [I-]aq (about >10-4 mol L-1) as long as [O3]gs is low enough (about <80 ppm). This trend is able to reconcile previous studies of this reaction, and is a consequence of several factors, including the high surface excess of both reactants ozone and iodide. Given the typical O3 concentrations in the troposphere and the possible I- concentrations and O3 solubilities in sea-salt aerosols, the surface reaction may compete with the aqueous-phase reaction in accumulation-mode aerosols, unlike in surface seawater, where the aqueous-phase reaction probably prevails. The rate constant of the surface reaction has been estimated as (3-40) × 10-13 cm2 molecule-1 s-1.

It has been hypothesized that black carbon (BC) influences mixed-phase clouds by acting as an ice-nucleating particle (INP). However, the literature data for ice nucleation by BC immersed in supercooled water are extremely varied, with some studies reporting that BC is very effective at nucleating ice, whereas others report no ice-nucleating ability. Here we present new experimental results for immersion mode ice nucleation by BC from two contrasting fuels (n-decane and eugenol). We observe no significant heterogeneous nucleation by either sample. Using a global aerosol model, we quantify the maximum relative importance of BC for ice nucleation when compared with K-feldspar and marine organic aerosol acting as INP. Based on the upper limit from our laboratory data, we show that BC contributes at least several orders of magnitude less INP than feldspar and marine organic aerosol. Representations of its atmospheric ice-nucleating ability based on older laboratory data produce unrealistic results when compared against ambient observations of INP. Since BC is a complex material, it cannot be unambiguously ruled out as an important INP species in all locations at all times. Therefore, we use our model to estimate a range of values for the density of active sites that BC particles must have to be relevant for ice nucleation in the atmosphere. The estimated values will guide future work on BC, defining the required sensitivity of future experimental studies.

Using laser flash photolysis coupled to photo-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PIMS), methyl radicals (CH 3 ) have been detected as primary products from the reaction of OH radicals with acetaldehyde (ethanal, CH 3 CHO) with a yield of ∼15% at 1-2 Torr of helium bath gas. Supporting measurements based on laser induced fluorescence studies of OH recycling in the OH/CH 3 CHO/O 2 system are consistent with the PIMS study. Master equation calculations suggest that the origin of the methyl radicals is from prompt dissociation of chemically activated acetyl products and hence is consistent with previous studies which have shown that abstraction, rather than addition/elimination, is the sole route for the OH + acetaldehyde reaction. However, the observation of a significant methyl product yield suggests that energy partitioning in the reaction is different from the typical early barrier mechanism where reaction exothermicity is channeled preferentially into the newly formed bond. The master equation calculations predict atmospheric yields of methyl radicals of ∼9%. The implications of the observations in atmospheric and combustion chemistry are briefly discussed.

Atmospheric iodine chemistry plays a key role in tropospheric ozone catalytic destruction, new particle formation, and as one of the possible sinks of gaseous polar elemental mercury. Moreover, it has been recently proposed that reaction of ozone with iodide on the sea surface could be the major contributor to the chemical loss of atmospheric ozone. However, the mechanism of the reaction between aqueous iodide and ozone is not well known. The aim of this paper is to improve the understanding of such a mechanism. In this paper, an ab initio study of the reaction of aqueous iodide and ozone is presented, evaluating thermodynamic data of the different reactions proposed in previous experimental studies. In addition, the structures, energetics and possible evolution of the key IOOO(-) intermediate are discussed for the first time.

A HO2 mass accommodation coefficient of α = 0.23 ± 0.07 was measured onto submicron copper(II)-doped ammonium sulfate aerosols at a relative humidity of 60 ± 3%, at 293 ± 2 K and at an initial HO2 concentration of ∼ 1 × 10(9) molecules cm(-3) by using an aerosol flow tube coupled to a sensitive fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) HO2 detection system. The effect upon the HO2 uptake coefficient γ of adding different organic species (malonic acid, citric acid, 1,2-diaminoethane, tartronic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and oxalic acid) into the copper(II)-doped aerosols was investigated. The HO2 uptake coefficient decreased steadily from the mass accommodation value to γ = 0.008 ± 0.009 when EDTA was added in a one-to-one molar ratio with the copper(II) ions, and to γ = 0.003 ± 0.004 when oxalic acid was added into the aerosol in a ten-to-one molar ratio with the copper(II). EDTA binds strongly to copper(II) ions, potentially making them unavailable for catalytic destruction of HO2, and could also be acting as a surfactant or changing the viscosity of the aerosol. The addition of oxalic acid to the aerosol potentially forms low-volatility copper-oxalate complexes that reduce the uptake of HO2 either by changing the viscosity of the aerosol or by causing precipitation out of the aerosol forming a coating. It is likely that there is a high enough oxalate to copper(II) ion ratio in many types of atmospheric aerosols to decrease the HO2 uptake coefficient. No observable change in the HO2 uptake coefficient was measured when the other organic species (malonic acid, citric acid, 1,2-diaminoethane, and tartronic acid) were added in a ten-to-one molar ratio with the copper(II) ions.

Measurements of HO2 uptake coefficients (γ) were made onto a variety of organic aerosols derived from glutaric acid, glyoxal, malonic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, squalene, monoethanol amine sulfate, monomethyl amine sulfate, and two sources of humic acid, for an initial HO2 concentration of 1 × 10(9) molecules cm(-3), room temperature and at atmospheric pressure. Values in the range of γ < 0.004 to γ = 0.008 ± 0.004 were measured for all of the aerosols apart from the aerosols from the two sources of humic acid. For humic acid aerosols, uptake coefficients in the range of γ = 0.007 ± 0.002 to γ = 0.09 ± 0.03 were measured. Elevated concentrations of copper (16 ± 1 and 380 ± 20 ppb) and iron (600 ± 30 and 51 000 ± 3000 ppb) ions were measured in the humic acid atomizer solutions compared to the other organics that can explain the higher uptake values measured. A strong dependence upon relative humidity was also observed for uptake onto humic acid, with larger uptake coefficients seen at higher humidities. Possible hypotheses for the humidity dependence include the changing liquid water content of the aerosol, a change in the mass accommodation coefficient or in the Henry's law constant.

The formation of atmospherically relevant iodine oxides IxOy (x = 1,…,3, y = 1,…,7) has been studied experimentally using time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with a soft ionisation source, complemented with ab initio electronic structure calculations of ionisation potentials and bond energies at a high level of theory presented in detail in the accompanying paper (Galvez et al., 2013). For the first time, direct experimental evidence of the I2Oy (y = 1,…,5) molecules in the gas phase has been obtained. These chemical species are observed alongside their precursors (IO and OIO) in experiments where large amounts of aerosol are also generated. The measured relative concentrations of the IxOy molecules and their dependence on ozone concentration have been investigated by using chemical modelling and rate theory calculations. It is concluded that I2O4 is the most plausible candidate to initiate nucleation, while the contribution of I2O5 in the initial steps is likely to be marginal. The absence of large I3Oy (y = 3,…,6) peaks in the mass spectra and the high stability of the I2O4-I2O4 dimer indicate that dimerisation of I2O4 is the key step in iodine oxide particle nucleation.

Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the kinetics of HO2 radical uptake onto submicron inorganic salt aerosols. HO2 reactive uptake coefficients were measured at room temperature using an aerosol flow tube and the Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) technique that allowed for measurements to be conducted under atmospherically relevant HO2 concentrations ([HO2] = 10(8) to 10(9) molecule cm(-3)). The uptake coefficient for HO2 uptake onto dry inorganic salt aerosols was consistently below the detection limit (γ(HO2) < 0.004). The mass accommodation coefficient of HO2 radicals onto Cu(II)-doped (NH4)2SO4 aerosols was measured to be α(HO2) = 0.4 ± 0.3 representing the kinetic upper limit to γ. For aqueous (NH4)2SO4, NaCl and NH4NO3 aerosols not containing traces of transition metal ions, a range of γ(HO2) = 0.003-0.02 was measured. These values were much lower than γ values previously measured on aqueous (NH4)2SO4 and NaCl aerosols and also those typically used in atmospheric models (γ(HO2) = 0.1-1.0). Evidence is presented showing that the HO2 uptake coefficients onto aqueous salt aerosol particles are dependent both on the exposure time to the aerosol and on the HO2 concentration used.

Recent laboratory and modelling studies have shown that reactive uptake of low molecular weight alpha-dicarbonyls such as glyoxal (GLY) by aerosols is a potentially significant source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, previous studies disagree in the magnitude of the uptake of GLY, the mechanism involved and the physicochemical factors affecting particle formation. In this study, the chemistry of GLY with ammonium sulfate (AS) in both bulk laboratory solutions and in aerosol particles is investigated. For the first time, Aerosol Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (ATOFMS), a single particle technique, is used together with offline (ESI-MS and LC-MS2) mass spectrometric techniques to investigate the change in composition of bulk solutions of GLY and AS resulting from aqueous photooxidation by OH and from ageing of the solutions in the dark. The mass spectral ions obtained in these laboratory studies were used as tracers of GLY uptake and chemistry in AS seed particles in a series of experiments carried out under dark and natural irradiated conditions at the outdoor European Photo-reactor (EUPHORE). Glyoxal oligomers formed were not detected by the ATOFMS, perhaps due to inefficient absorption at the laser wavelength. However, the presence of organic nitrogen compounds, formed by reaction of GLY with ammonia was confirmed, resulting in an increase in the absorption efficiency of the aerosol, and this increased the number of particles successfully ionised by the ATOFMS. A number of light absorbing organic nitrogen species, including 1H-imidazole, 1H-imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde, 2,2'-bis-imidazole and a glyoxal substituted 2,2'-bisimidazole, previously identified in aqueous laboratory solutions, were also identified in chamber aerosol and formed on atmospherically relevant timescales. An additional compound, predicted to be 1,2,5-oxadiazole, had an enhanced formation rate when the chamber was open and is predicted to be formed via a light activated pathway involving radical oxidation of ammonia to hydroxylamine, followed by subsequent reaction with glyoxal to form an intermediate glyoxime.

The acetyl + O(2) reaction has been studied by observing the time dependence of OH by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and by electronic structure/master equation analysis. The experimental OH time profiles were analyzed to obtain the kinetics of the acetyl + O(2) reaction and the relative OH yields over the temperature range of 213-500 K in helium at pressures in the range of 5-600 Torr. More limited measurements were made in N(2) and for CD(3)CO + O(2). The relative OH yields were converted into absolute yields by assuming that the OH yield at zero pressure is unity. Electronic structure calculations of the stationary points of the potential energy surface were used with a master equation analysis to fit the experimental data in He using the high-pressure limiting rate coefficient for the reaction, k(∞)(T), and the energy transfer parameter, (ΔE(d)), as variable parameters. The best-fit parameters obtained are k(∞) = 6.2 × 10(-12) cm(-3) molecule(-1) s(-1), independent of temperature over the experimental range, and (ΔE(d))(He) = 160(T/298 K) cm(-1). The fits in N(2), using the same k(∞)(T), gave (ΔE(d))(N(2)) = 270(T/298 K) cm(-1). The rate coefficients for formation of OH and CH(3)C(O)O(2) are provided in parametrized form, based on modified Troe expressions, from the best-fit master equation calculations, over the pressure and temperature ranges of 1 ≤ p/Torr ≤ 1.5 × 10(5) and 200 ≤ T/K ≤ 1000 for He and N(2) as the bath gas. The minor channels, leading to HO(2) + CH(2)CO and CH(2)C(O)OOH, generally have yields <1% over this range.

Experimental studies have been conducted to determine the rate coefficient and mechanism of the reaction between methylglyoxal (CH(3)COCHO, MGLY) and the OH radical over a wide range of temperatures (233-500 K) and pressures (5-300 Torr). The rate coefficient is pressure independent with the following temperature dependence: k(3)(T) = (1.83 +/- 0.48) x 10(-12) exp((560 +/- 70)/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) (95% uncertainties). Addition of O(2) to the system leads to recycling of OH. The mechanism was investigated by varying the experimental conditions ([O(2)], [MGLY], temperature and pressure), and by modelling based on a G3X potential energy surface, rovibrational prior distribution calculations and master equation RRKM calculations. The mechanism can be described as follows: Addition of oxygen to the system shows that process (4) is fast and that CH(3)COCO completely dissociates. The acetyl radical formed from reaction (4) reacts with oxygen to regenerate OH radicals (5a). However, a significant fraction of acetyl radical formed by reaction (R4) is sufficiently energised to dissociate further to CH(3) + CO (R4b). Little or no pressure quenching of reaction (R4b) was observed. The rate coefficient for OD + MGLY was measured as k(9)(T) = (9.4 +/- 2.4) x 10(-13) exp((780 +/- 70)/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) over the temperature range 233-500 K. The reaction shows a noticeable inverse (k(H)/k(D) < 1) kinetic isotope effect below room temperature and a slight normal kinetic isotope effect (k(H)/k(D) > 1) at high temperature. The potential atmospheric implications of this work are discussed.
