The subject of About Sieves and Sieving is the motif of the sieve, starting from the enigmatic portraits of Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland (1533-1603). 14. Cum festinatione. Celebrating Salome’s Dance Again

Abstract

Mark 6:14-29 and Matthew 14:1-12 recount Herod’s feats and the death of John the Baptist. Herod had the prophet imprisoned for denouncing as incestuous hismarriage to Herodias, the former wife of his brother. During a festive banquet, Herodias’ daughter dances before Herod, who is so enchanted that he promises her afavour. At her mother’s behest, she asks for the head of John the Baptist. The king honours her request and has the head delivered to her on a plate ( in disco ), whichshe gives to her mother. When John’s disciples discover his death, they bury his headless body. In Mark’s plot the motif of dance and by extension of Salome demonstrate a peculiar spatial energy: the way in which Salome is placed in different rooms isconfusing and seems flighty. It starts with verse 22, where the daughter comes in ( cumque introisset filia ipsius ). Then, in verse 24, when she has finished her danceand Herod’s oath has inescapably been made, she leaves the room and asks her mother for advice. Her mother then whispers the fatal demand into her ear ( quae cumexisset dixit matri ). In verse 25, the pace of the story picks up. Salome re-enters the room and immediately addresses the king with haste ( cumque introisset statimcum festinatione ). At this point, the events are interrupted by the beheading in the prison after which, in verse 28, the executioner gives the head to the girl, and thegirl gives the head to the mother ( et adtulit caput eius in disco et dedit illud puellae et puella dedit matri suae ). The first transfer of the head, according to thecontext, happens in the hall where the party is held, while the second is suggested to have happened in a different room, since earlier, she had to leave to go see hermother. In short, she comes in, she leaves, she hastily goes in again, she receives the platter, she gives the platter to the mother. The French literary critic René Girard (1923-2015) wrote a fascinating essay on the role of the dancing girl in Mark’s plot. The author develops the motif from theconcept of “mimetic desire”. “Salome is a child. She has nothing to do with the dance of the seven veils and other orientalia ,” writes Girard (Girard 1984, 311-324).The child imitates her mother’s wish and from the moment she is filled with this wish, the girl crosses a certain threshold. It is said in Mark that the girl hastens back( Cum festinatione ), and immediately demands John’s head in disco . The acceleration reflects the intensification of the plot that will converge in what Girard calls“mimetic violence”. Girard writes: “At first she is a blank sheet of desire, then, in one instant, she shifts to the height of mimetic violence (Girard 1984, 314)”. Thispeculiar rite of passage enacts itself in an inevitable determination of moments: from the silent dance, to the king’s giving voice to the oath, to the mother’s wishfulfilled, culminating in the dazzling horror of a head on a platter offered during a banquet. Abstract

This volume is dedicated to the study of late medieval and early modern liturgical objects, once known as ornamenta sacra. It encompasses a wide range of objects made of various materials and techniques which are not only essential for the rites, but also hold a central position in the religious and artistic production of the past. The contributions to this volume understand them at the heart of a system of complex relationships which make them contribute to their religious functions, but also to their aesthetic, symbolic and social ones: relationships with the men who commissioned, produced and manipulated them, but also with liturgical time and space; relationships too between these different objects, as also with the prescriptive and spiritual frameworks which dictate or accompany their uses. It is the life of these objects that is here recounted, objects invested with value at one and the same time religious, financial and aesthetic.

36. Multiple phenotypic alterations caused by a c-type cytochrome maturation ccmC gene mutation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract

In some Proteobacteria biogenesis of c-type cytochromes depends on the products of the ccmABCDEFG(H) genes, which encode inner-membrane proteins. Inactivation of some ccm genes, in particular ccmC, has an impact on other processes as well, including siderophore production and utilization. Non-polar insertions were generated in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa ccmA, ccmC, ccmE, ccmF and ccmH genes, and their impacts on different phenotypes were compared. Only in the case of the ccmC mutant was cytochrome c production totally abrogated. The ccmC mutant, and to a lesser extent the ccmF mutant, showed a range of other phenotypic changes. The production of the siderophore pyoverdine was very low and growth under the condition of iron limitation was severely restricted, but production of the second siderophore, pyochelin, was increased. Interestingly, other traits were also strongly affected by the ccmC mutation, including the production of pyocyanin, swarming and twitching motility, and rhamnolipid production. The production of N-acyl homoserine lactones or the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) was, however, not affected in the ccmC and ccmF mutants. The ccmC mutant was also found to accumulate porphyrins, and catalase production was undetectable, consistent with the increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide. Finally, reduction in the content of [Fe-S] clusters was evidenced in both ccmC and ccmF mutants. Wild-type phenotypes were restored by complementation with a ccmC gene from Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 17400. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that CcmC is a key determinant for cytochrome c biogenesis, pyoverdine maturation, and expression of some quorum sensing-regulated traits.
