Simple Summary: Crude feed protein sources, which are rich in several amino acids, can be used as feed attractants when formulating feed. Jack mackerel meal exhibited the strongest attractiveness to red sea bream among 18 crude protein ingredients. The effects of the inclusion of various levels of jack mackerel meal in diets on the growth and feed availability of red sea bream were evaluated in an 8-week feeding trial. The results of the 8-week feeding trial proved that the dietary inclusion level of 100% jack mackerel meal in a 60%-FM-based diet produced the greatest growth performance in red sea bream, which directly resulted from the improved feed consumption. This result may imply the potential use of jack mackerel meal as a feed attractant when developing low-fish-meal diets for the sustainable culture of red sea bream. Dietary incorporation of an attractive feed protein source is a practical method of enhancing feed intake and consequently improving the growth of fish. The attractiveness of 18 crude protein sources to juvenile red sea bream (Pagrus major) and the effects of the dietary inclusion of the crude protein source that exhibited the strongest attractiveness on growth, feed availability, and economic efficiency were determined. Jack mackerel meal (JMM) showed the strongest attractiveness to red sea bream among 18 crude protein ingredients. In an 8-week feeding trial, 810 juveniles were randomly distributed into 27 tanks (30 fish/tank). Nine experimental diets were prepared. The control (Con) diet included 60% fish meal (FM). Various levels (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 100%) of JMM were included at the expense of FM in the Con diet, and the resulting diets were named the JMM1, JMM3, JMM5, JMM10, JMM20, JMM40, JMM60, and JMM100 diets, respectively. Fish were hand-fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. The weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed consumption of red sea bream that were fed the JMM40, JMM60, and JMM100 diets were significantly (p < 0.0001 for all) higher than those of the fish fed all other diets. However, dietary JMM inclusion had no remarkable impacts on the feed utilization, biological indices, and chemical composition of the whole body of red sea bream. In terms of the economic view of the study, the economic profit index of red sea bream fed the JMM40, JMM60, and JMM100 diets was significantly (p < 0.0001) greater than that of the fish fed all other diets. In conclusion, the strongest attractiveness to red sea bream among 18 crude protein sources was observed in JMM. The inclusion of more than 40% JMM at the expense of FM in the diet of red sea bream is highly recommended for practical feed formulations to induce remarkable improvement in the growth performance of fish and the economic returns for farmers. Simple Summary: Fish meal is widely used as a feed ingredient in formulated feeds for marine fish species due to its high nutritional value and palatability. However, the increasing cost and limited availability of fish meal highlight the high need to look for an alternative protein source for fish meal in fish feeds to achieve sustainable aquaculture. Tuna by-product meal, derived from the tuna canning process, shows promise as a viable substitute for fish meal in fish feeds. This study aimed to investigate the effect of replacing fish meal with tuna by-product meal on the growth of red sea bream. The findings of this study suggested that 40% fish meal replacement with tuna by-product meal is viable without compromising growth, feed consumption, and feed utilization, while simultaneously providing the highest economic return for fish farmers. The effect of substituting fish meal (FM) by tuna by-product meal (TBM) on growth and feed availability of red sea bream (Pagrus major) was investigated. Six experimental diets were crested to be isonitrogenous (51.5%) and isolipidic (14.5%). The control (Con) diet contained 55% FM. FM substitution in the Con diet was made in increments of 20 percentage points (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%), named as the TBM20, TBM40, TBM60, TBM80, and TBM100 diets, respectively. Juvenile red sea bream were stocked into 18, 300 L flow-through tanks (50 fish/tank). Red sea bream were hand-fed with each diet until satiation for 8 weeks. No statistical differences in weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and feed consumption were found among red sea bream fed the Con, TBM20, and TBM40 diets. Furthermore, feed utilization of fish fed the TBM20, TBM40, TBM60, and TBM80 diets was comparable to red sea bream fed the Con diet. The biological indices, biochemical composition, and hematological parameters of fish were not statistically altered by dietary FM replacement with TBM. The greatest economic profit index was achieved in the TBM40 diet. In conclusion, the replacement of 40% FM with TBM in red sea bream diet appears to be the most recommendable approach without producing retarded growth and feed availability, but maximizing EPI to farmers. The present study examined the dietary substitution effect of chicken by‐product meal (CBM) for fish meal (FM) on growth, feed utilization, body composition, haematology and non‐specific immune responses of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Six isonitrogenic and isolipidic experimental diets were prepared. The control (Con) diet contained 650 g/kg FM. One hundred, 200, 300, 400 and 500 g/kg FM were replaced with CBM, referred to as the CBM10, CBM20, CBM30, CBM40 and CBM50 diets, respectively. A total of 400 juvenile fish averaging 14.7 g was distributed into 20 tanks (20 fish/tank) and fed triplicate groups of each diet, except for quadruplicate groups for the Con and CBM30 diets twice daily to satiation for 8 weeks. Arginine, phenylalanine and threonine content of the experimental diets increased with dietary increased substitution of FM with CBM. The experimental diets did not affect survival, weight gain, specific growth rate, feed consumption and feed utilization of fish. The chemical composition, whole body amino acid profiles, haematological variables and non‐specific immune responses of fish were not changed by the experimental diets. These findings suggest that FM up to 500 g/kg can be substituted with CBM without retardation in growth, feed utilization, haematology and non‐specific immune responses of olive flounder. The attractiveness of various protein sources of 16 feed ingredients was determined in juvenile rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) by using reinforced acrylic tank composed of three equally divided rectangular attracting chambers and an acclimatization chamber. Thirty fish were held in the acclimatization chamber at a time and tournament comparison of feed ingredients was applied to evaluate attractiveness. Jack mackerel (JM) (40.0%), sardine (SM) (33.3%), Pollack (PM) (40.0%), shrimp (SHM) (36.7%), mussel meal (40.0%) and oyster (43.3%) meals achieved the highest feeding attractiveness to rockfish in the 1st through 6th preliminary test, respectively. JM (40.0%), SHM (36.7%), squid meal (SQM) (33.3%), SM (40.3%), PM (40.0%) and PM (36.7%) achieved the highest feeding attractiveness to fish in the 7th through 12th preliminary test, respectively. Among the top five feed ingredients showing high attractiveness to rockfish, JM achieved higher attractiveness than PM and SHM in the 1st trial. In the 2nd trial, attractiveness of JM to rockfish was higher than SM and SQM. SM achieved higher attractiveness to rockfish than SQM, but not different from PM throughout the 30-min observation in the 3rd trial. Natural convection heat transfer of two heating spheres was investigated varying the horizontal and the vertical pitches. Based on the analogy concept, mass transfer experiments were carried out by adopting a copper sulfate-sulfuric acid (CuSO 4 -H 2 SO 4) electroplating system. The sphere diameter was varied from 6 to 40 mm, which correspond to Gr d of 9.10 × 103–2.70 × 106. The heat transfer of two spheres for both in-line and staggered arrangements under laminar and turbulent flow conditions were analyzed by four distinct effects: stagnant, preheating, initial velocity and chimney-like effects. The heat transfer of upper sphere was either enhanced by the initial velocity effect or impaired by the preheating effect. Notable observations were that the heat transfer of lower sphere was also affected by the stagnant flow and chimney effects due to the existence of the upper sphere. • Heat transfers of a single heating sphere in packed bed was investigated varying its position. • For natural convection, position influence on the packed bed heat transfer was not observed. • For forced convection, local heat transfers were affected by axial and radial positions. • The transition to turbulent flow regime occurred at ∼0.06 m/s for all sphere diameters. • Forced convection correlation for the local heat transfer in the packed bed was developed. Natural and forced convection experiments on a single heating sphere in a packed bed were performed by varying the axial and radial positions of the heating sphere. Based on the analogy between heat and mass transfer, mass transfer experiments were conducted using a copper electroplating system. The sphere diameter was varied from 0.004 to 0.010 m, which correspond to the Ra d of 5.43 × 106–8.48 × 107. The Sc was 2,014. In the forced convection experiments, the range of superficial velocity was 0.01 to 0.58 m/s, which correspond the Re d of 43–5,076. For natural convective flow, the influence of sphere position on the heat transfer of single heating sphere in the packed bed was not observed. However, for forced convective flow, the local heat transfer inside the bed was affected by the variation of the sphere position. The heat transfer increased at the downstream layer of bed due to the intensified turbulence level by the porous structure. The heat transfer near wall region was also enhanced due to the high local porosity.
