Brown algae are gaining traction as biorefinery feedstocks due to their advantages such as rapid growth and carbon dioxide sequestration. Saccharina japonica has high potential due to its high carbohydrate content, especially mannitol (26.7%). In this study, a biorefinery process for S. japonica was designed, with focusing on sugar conversion and bioconversion into lactic acid, a valuable platform chemical utilized in various industries. The existing sugar conversion process of S. japonica has been investigated by focusing on enzymatic or acid‐catalyzed hydrolysis, but not hot water extraction although mannitol can be easily recovered using water. The effect of temperature (60–120°C) on the mannitol yield from S. japonica was investigated, and a mannitol yield of 208 g/kg biomass was achieved at the optimal temperature of 100°C (about 78% of the theoretical maximum yield). This study emphasizes that this simple process has considerable potential for application as over 80% of the fermentable carbohydrates in S. japonica were mannitol. Then, S. japonica extract was applied to lactic acid production. First, lactic acid production of four bacterial strains was tested in a mannitol medium, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus was selected as the superior producer, showing 1.93 to 2.92 times better lactic acid titer than others. Next, the optimal feeding concentration of mannitol was determined to be 20 g/L, which was all consumed by L. rhamnosus. Finally, S. japonica extract was applied to lactic acid production by L. rhamnosus, and the results showed similar fermentation profiles with the control medium: lactic acid production, 18.81 g/L (control: 18.97 g/L); lactic acid conversion, 95.1% (control: 95.9%); cell growth (OD600 nm), 8.9 (control: 7.4). The lactic acid yield in the designed biorefinery process was estimated to be 195.6 g/kg biomass, thus S. japonica has high potential as a biorefinery feedstock to produce valuable bioproducts, including lactic acid. There is increasing interest in the development of functional composite materials in the field of textiles/clothing, and 3D printing technology has been researched widely to allow practical applications. Previous studies have proposed solutions to improve the adhesion of composite fabrics produced by fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology, but analysis of the adhesion characteristics of fabric composites manufactured by digital light processing (DLP) is insufficient. In this study, the DLP method was used to print rectangular patterns on four textured fabrics (woven polyester (PET), Velour, Fleece, Pleated), peeling experiments and mechanical property tests were conducted on 3D-printed composite fabrics, and these results were compared with those of the FDM method to analyze adhesion based on the surface properties of the fabrics. For composite fabrics printed using the DLP method, a liquid photosensitive resin penetrates the fibers, resulting in greater adhesion of composite fabrics and accuracy of printed patterns than those prepared using FDM. The DLP-PET showed the best mechanical properties in all groups. This research verified that adhesion can be improved by the 3D printing method and the surface characteristics of the fabric and presents a new method to prepare composite fabrics with improved properties. To further improve the output performance of triboelectric devices, reducing charge attenuation and loss has become a hot research topic. Particularly, textiles have emerged as one of the promising research directions for triboelectric devices owing to their special internal structure and large specific surface area. In the present work, polyacrylonitrile fibers are fabricated with two distinct structures to provide a higher dielectric constant due to the strong polar properties brought about by higher dipole moment of the CN group. In addition, the complex and closely connected structure of the textile increases specific internal surface area. As a friction layer, the output voltage is shown to increase to 625% of the initial value (from 8 to 60 V) after the application of friction for a short time due to accumulation property. When acting as a trapping layer, the charge loss after injection is effectively prevented due to excellent charge trapping effect. After 24 h, the triboelectric output performance remains at ≈70% of the initial value (decreasing from 320 to 220 V), which is more than 20 times that of the polytetrafluoroethylene film, which decreases from 125 to 19 V. The wearable electronics integrated with textile-based devices is a promising strategy to meet the requirements of human comfort as well as electrical performances. This research presents a design and development framework for a seamless glove sensor system using digital knitting fabrication. Based on the performance requirements of glove sensors for controlling a prosthetic hand, desirable design components include electrical conductivity, comfort, formfit, electrical sensitivity, and customizable design. These attributes are determined and achieved by applying appropriate materials and fabrication technologies. In this study, a digital knitting CAD/CAM system is utilized to meet the desired performance criteria, and two prototypes of the seamless glove sensor systems are successfully developed for the detection of both human and robotic finger motions. This digital knitting system will provide considerable potential for customized design development as well as a sustainable production process.
