Introduction Telemedicine has been shown to be an effective approach for people with substance-related disorders. Analyzing patient satisfaction with telemedicine is necessary for improving treatment outcomes. This study aims to assess patient satisfaction with telemedicine for substance-related disorders at the Centro Asistencial Córdoba in Argentina. Methods A cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational design was carried out. A patient satisfaction survey was created, consisting of eight questions and a quality-of-life question, which was administered to N = 115 patients. Results The results showed that more than 90% agreed with the ease of use of virtual consultations, 82% felt they received the same level of care as if the consultation had been in person, 86% agreed with the adequacy of time utilized during the virtual session, and over 85% agreed to repeat their telemedicine treatment. Regarding the composite variable “users’ assessment of telemedicine,” we found an average of 17.41 ± 2.80. Concerning satisfaction with virtual care and the previous use of telemedicine, 95.7% were satisfied, and nearly 61.7% reported not having used virtual care previously. In terms of money and time saved, 93.9% saved money with virtual consultations, 66.1% saved more than two hours per week, 23.5% saved more than one hour per week, and 10.4% saved less than one hour per week. Conclusions Overall, there is significant approval of telemedicine among users of substance-related disorders services. In particular, they were satisfied with the time employed, the benefits of saving time and money, and the ease of use of telemedicine; furthermore, they were positive about undergoing telemedicine treatment in the future.

Alcohol-related social norms are internalized beliefs regarding the extension and approval of alcohol consumption by social reference groups. Prevention programs based on social norms and behavioral insights are empirical evidence-based approaches that challenge cognitive biases and promote healthy choices by providing actual information of targeted behaviors. These programs, to our knowledge, have not been applied to reduce alcohol use in Latin-America. Objectives: This study examined the effectiveness of a school-based social norms intervention to reduce alcohol use behaviors in high-school adolescents from Cordoba city (Argentina). Ninety-two students (Mean age = 14.18±0.82 years) participated. A 2 (type of school administration: public, private) x 2 (treatment: experimental, control) factorial design was employed. Data collections provided information on actual alcohol consumption, perceived alcohol consumption of classmates and discrepancies (i.e., biases) between both measures. Results: A brief feedback session, which was complemented with the placement of posters inside the classroom, reduced the prevalence and frequency of several alcohol drinking behaviors. These effects were more noticeable in the public than in the private schools. Conclusions: This is, to our knowledge, the first report of a program that applied a social norms strategy to reduce alcohol consumption in high schoolers from South America.

En el presente artículo se sistematizaron las principales acciones de transformación digital (TD) de los sistemas de salud que abordan a las funciones esenciales de la salud pública (FESP). Se realizó una revisión narrativa, donde se interrelacionó el marco conceptual de las funciones esenciales de la salud pública renovadas con los ocho principios rectores de la transformación digital del sector de la salud. En las publicaciones seleccionadas, se halló que las principales acciones de la TD comprenden la historia clínica electrónica, la telemedicina, la legislación en salud digital, la alfabetización digital, los portales del paciente, las tecnologías de código abierto y la gobernanza de datos. Estas acciones posibilitan aumentar la calidad y la eficiencia de los sistemas de salud, favorecer la accesibilidad y mejorar los resultados de salud.

Abstract Observation of high-resolution terrestrial palaeoecological series can decipher relationships between past climatic transitions, their effects on ecosystems and wildfire cyclicity. Here we present a new radiocarbon dated record from Lake Fimon (NE-Italy) covering the 60–27 ka interval. Palynological, charcoal fragments and sediment lithology analysis were carried out at centennial to sub-centennial resolutions. Identification of the best modern analogues for MIS 3 ecosystems further enabled to thoroughly reconstruct structural changes in the vegetation through time. This series also represents an “off-site” reference record for chronologically well-constrained Palaeolithic sites documenting Neanderthal and Homo sapiens occupations within the same region. Neanderthals lived in a mosaic of grasslands and woodlands, composed of a mixture of boreal and broad-leaved temperate trees analogous to those of the modern Central-Eastern Europe, the Southern Urals and central-southern Siberia. Dry and other grassland types expanded steadily from 44 to 43 ka and peaked between 42 and 39 ka, i.e., about the same time when Sapiens reached this region. This vegetation, which finds very few reliable modern analogues in the adopted Eurasian calibration set, led to the expansion of ecosystems able to sustain large herds of herbivores. During 39–27 ka, the landscape was covered by steppe, desert-steppe and open dry boreal forests similar to those of the modern Altai-Sayan region. Both Neanderthal and Sapiens lived in contexts of expanded fire-prone ecosystems modulated by the high-frequency climatic cycles of MIS 3.

Acoustic materials are widely used for improving interior acoustics based on their sound absorptive or sound diffusive properties. However, common acoustic materials only offer limited options for customizable geometrical features, performance, and aesthetics. This paper focuses on the sound absorption performance of highly customizable 3D-printed Hybrid Acoustic Materials (HAMs) by means of parametric stepped thickness, which is used for sound absorption and diffusion. HAMs were parametrically designed and produced using computational design, 3D-printing technology, and feedstock material with adjustable porosity, allowing for the advanced control of acoustic performance through geometry-related sound absorbing/diffusing strategies. The proposed design methodology paves the way to a customizable large-scale cumulative acoustic performance by varying the parametric stepped thickness. The present study explores the challenges posed by the testing of the sound absorption performance of HAMs in an impedance tube. The representativeness of the test samples (i.e., cylindrical sections) with respect to the original (i.e., rectangular) panel samples is contextually limited by the respective impedance tube’s geometrical features (i.e., cylindrical cross-section) and dimensional requirements (i.e., diameter size). To this aim, an interlaboratory comparison was carried out by testing the normal incidence sound absorption of ten samples in two independent laboratories with two different impedance tubes. The results obtained demonstrate a good level of agreement, with HAMs performing better at lower frequencies than expected and behaving like Helmholtz absorbers, as well as demonstrating a frequency shift pattern related to superficial geometric features.

Abstract Prehistoric monuments often constitute evident landmarks and sometimes, after falling into disuse, fascinated local people enough to stimulate speculations about their origin over time. According to legend, the Hill of Udine (NE Italy) was built by Attila the Hun’s soldiers, but its origin (natural or anthropogenic) has been debated until now. Our research analyzed five new 40-m long stratigraphic cores, investigating for the first time the total thickness of the hill and compared the data with the available archaeological information. Moreover, we considered other hills and mounds in northern Italy and other European regions where folklore traditions relate their origin to Attila. The geoarchaeological and ethnographic data prove that the Hill of Udine is a Bronze Age anthropogenic mound erected between 1400 and 1150 BCE and that, later, folklore has transformed the ancestral memory of its origin into legend. By measuring 30 m in height and over 400,000 m3 in volume, the flat-topped hill is the largest prehistoric mound in Europe. This discovery reveals unprecedented skills in earth construction and confirms significant anthropogenic modifications of the environment during Bronze Age.

This paper presents the analysis, design, development and implementation of a data acquisition system from various sensors, to be installed and used in different FAA Air Vehicles, through an ARM® Cortex®-R4F CPU microcontroller that meets critical safety standards, such as IEC 61508 , ISO 26262 and DO-178 (at the Software level). The sensors are: a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and atmospheric pressure and temperature sensors. The ARM microcontroller was mounted on a development board called CIAA-Safety and its programming was carried out under the BAREMETAL format, that is, without a Real Time Operating System.

The most frequent adverse effects of AFB1 in chicken are low performance, the depression of the immune system, and a reduced quality of both eggs and meat, leading to economic losses. Since oxidative stress plays a major role in AFB1 toxicity, natural products are increasingly being used as an alternative to mineral binders to tackle AFB1 toxicosis in farm animals. In this study, an in vivo trial was performed by exposing broilers for 10 days to AFB1 at dietary concentrations approaching the maximum limits set by the EU (0.02 mg/kg feed) in the presence or absence of turmeric powder (TP) (included in the feed at 400 mg/kg). The aims were to evaluate (i) the effects of AFB1 on lipid peroxidation, antioxidant parameters, histology, and the expression of drug transporters and biotransformation enzymes in the liver; (ii) the hepatic accumulation of AFB1 and its main metabolites (assessed using an in-house-validated HPLC-FLD method); (iii) the possible modulation of the above parameters elicited by TP. Broilers exposed to AFB1 alone displayed a significant increase in lipid peroxidation in the liver, which was completely reverted by the concomitant administration of TP. Although no changes in glutathione levels and antioxidant enzyme activities were detected in any treatment group, AFB1 significantly upregulated and downregulated the mRNA expression of CYP2A6 and Nrf2, respectively. TP counteracted such negative effects and increased the hepatic gene expression of selected antioxidant enzymes (i.e., CAT and SOD2) and drug transporters (i.e., ABCG2), which were further enhanced in combination with AFB1. Moreover, both AFB1 and TP increased the mRNA levels of ABCC2 and ABCG2 in the duodenum. The latter changes might be implicated in the decrease in hepatic AFB1 to undetectable levels (

Pneumatic bioreactors are a class of reactors increasingly used in bioprocesses, since they provide adequate heat and mass transfer, rapid mixing and good suspension of solids. In this work, oxygen transfer from a square-cross section bubble column bioreactor was evaluated experimentally and numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the results were compared with data obtained experimentally. Different specific air flow rates (1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 vvm) and drag and lift interfacial forces, were considered in the numerical simulations using the two-fluid Eulerian model. The simulations considering the presence of lift force showed results closer to the experimental data, with the highest values of kLa found for the higher specific air flow rate (5 vvm) analyzed in this study.

Enzyme reactions at interfaces are common in both Nature and industrial applications but no general kinetic framework exists for interfacial enzymes. Here, the authors kinetically characterize 83 cellulases and identify a scaling relationship between ligand binding strength and maximal turnover, a so-called linear free energy relationship, which may help rationalize cellulolytic mechanisms and guide the selection of technical enzymes.

In the shift towards sustainable development, there is increasing interest in the isolation of cellulose nanomaterials using enzyme-mediated strategies that are more environmentally friendly. The principles of systematic mapping were used here to conduct a literature review covering the most recent research on cellulose nanomaterials whose production processes included the use of enzymes, identifying trends and gaps in the literature. The results evidenced a significant increase in the publications related to nanocellulose production using enzymes, especially in the last eight years (2013–2021). The feedstocks most used were derived from hardwoods and agro-industrial residues. The commonest enzymes employed were commercial cellulase and endoglucanase rich preparations. Importantly, there is still no commercially available enzymatic preparation specifically designed for nanocellulose production. Moreover, this systematic mapping showed that nanocelluloses have frequently been used in film preparation and as reinforcement agents. These data should assist researchers in future studies, while synthesizing information relevant to decision-making.

We report a case of laboratory-confirmed Campylobacter (C). jejuni and C. upsaliensis symptomatic infection in a puppy, a French Bouledogue, female, 6 months of age, fed a raw, unbalanced, poultry-based diet (RPD), (48.1 CP, 33% EE, 0.3% Ca, 0.5% Phos, 0.5 Ca/P, on a dry-matter basis), and in its owner. Soon after adoption, the pet and the caregiver showed severe gastrointestinal signs and needed hospitalization. Fecal PCR assays, selective cultures, and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed, and multi-drug resistant C. jejuni and C. upsaliensis were isolated from the feces of both. The same bacteria were also identified by FISH in the dog colonic biopsies collected during endoscopy. The puppy was prescribed a complete commercial diet for growing dogs, (30.00% CP, 21.00% EE, 1.2% Ca; 1% Phos; as fed) and treated with ciprofloxacin. The dog and the man healed uneventfully and tested negative for further fecal PCR analyses. This report focuses on dog nutritional management and explores the potential routes of exposure, with emphasis on emerging outbreaks related to current pet food fads. Our data support the One Health approach, where veterinarians, physicians, and owners are challenged to build effective stewardship to prevent the spread of zoonoses.

An ad hoc questionnaire was designed in order to investigate AMR knowledge amongst Italian dog owners, owner expectations concerning pharmacological treatment of canine AD, and client attitudes towards and compliance with alternative strategies to antimicrobial administration. A total of 250 questionnaires were returned. Most of respondents were female, aged 36–70 and workers. More than a half of participants owned one dog with mixed breed, with Labrador retriever, golden retriever, dachshund, and border collie being the most represented breeds. On average, each dog was treated with an oral antibiotic 1.044 times per year. Intestinal diseases were among the main reasons (19%) for antibiotic prescription. Oral antibiotic courses without veterinary consultation (21%) and anticipated termination of the therapy (17.1%) were less common than reported elsewhere. The majority of respondents knew the meaning of AMR with a significant inverse association between the level of education and the tendency to administer antimicrobials without consulting a clinician (p = 0.004). Most of the owners expected a rapid recovery of clinical signs after a first episode of AD and accepted natural dietary supplementation for treating the condition. Ninety-five percent of the respondents believed that public funding should be spent to study AMR. Even though an acceptable degree of AMR awareness emerged, we feel that further efforts should be made to increase public AMR knowledge and to stimulate proactive measures to fight the phenomenon. On the other hand, the development of guidelines for the treatment of uncomplicated canine AD would help clinicians to rationalize antimicrobial use.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) causes hepatotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and kidney damage, and it is included in group I of human carcinogens. The European Commission has established maximum limits of AFB1 in feed, ranging from 5 to 20 μg/kg. Chicken is moderately sensitive to AFB1, which results in reduced growth performance and economic losses. Oxidative stress triggered by AFB1 plays a crucial role in kidney damage and the antioxidant activity of Curcumin (CURC) could help in preventing such adverse effect. Twenty-days-old broilers were treated for 10 days with AFB1 (0.02 mg/kg feed), alone or in combination with CURC (400 mg/kg feed), to explore the effects on the renal tissue. Animals exposed to AFB1 alone displayed alterations of the oxidative stress parameters compared with controls: serum antioxidant capacity, and enzymatic activity of kidney superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were decreased, while renal malondialdehyde levels and NADPH oxidase complex expression were increased. The administration of CURC attenuates all the oxidative stress parameters modified by AFB1 in the chicken kidney, opening new perspectives in the management of aflatoxicosis.

Current development in digital design, combined with the growing awareness of the importance of building performance, had drawn attention to performance-based design (PBD) in architecture. PBD benefits both design workflow and outcome, allowing one to control the performance of the design proposal since early design phases. The paper aims to explore its current application in the acoustic field, where its potential is still little exploited in architectural practice. A set of built case studies is collected and briefly analyzed with the aim to shed some light on the state of the art of the application of acoustic performance-based design (APBD) in practice. The analysis suggests that in order to encourage the application of APBD it is needed on one side to enhance the integration and interoperability among modeling and simulation tools, and on the other side to improve the acoustic knowledge and programming skills of the architectural practitioners.

La ricerca ha investigato quanto il progetto architettonico di una facciata possa contribuire al miglioramento del confort acustico in un canyon urbano in presenza di rumore da chiacchiericcio in strada. è stata simulata l'applicazione di un materiale fonoassorbente alle superfici esterne della facciata di un edificio selezionato come caso-studio, e al manto stradale. L'effetto di queste variazioni è¨ stato valutato sulla base dei livelli di pressione sonora ponderati-A in posizioni esterne in prossimità della facciata stessa. I risultati mostrano che l'applicazione di materiali fonoassorbenti alla facciata e di un manto stradale fonoassorbente porta a riduzioni di livello sonori medi in facciata rispettivamente di 5,6 dB e 1,6 dB, mentre la riduzione dovuta alle due strategie combinate è di 6,8 dB. - The research investigated the potentialities of façade design in the enhancement of acoustic comfort in a street canyon in presence of leisure noise at the street level. The application of sound absorbing materials to the façade ade cladding and to the street paving has been simulated on a case-study building. The effect of these strategies has been evaluated based on the differences between of the A-weighted sound pressure levels over the façade itself and those achieved by actual scenario. The results highlight that the application of sound absorbing cladding materials to the façade ade and of a sound absorbing asphalt to the street reaches sound level reductions over the façade equal to 5.6 dB and 1.6 dB, respectively, while the two strategies combined achieves a reduction of 6.8 dB.

Each place has a peculiar history and nature, attracting its morphological characteristics and the elements brought about by mankind. If that place is a monastery, we should also consider that indefinable presence, yet also tangible, made by the lives of men and women that have worked, prayed and hosted pilgrims there, year after year. Restoring the spaces of a monastery is difficult yet it also implies a great charm. It requires courage and freedom to remember that we are not alone, but we are accompanied by a big crowd of men and women who have lived there, year after year, to learn the arduous but wonderful art of living. Restoring a building is not merely a task of functional adaptation or modernization. It is a cultural exercise: listening to, understanding and finding the nature of that building, so that it can start a new life. Restoring is a prophetic task through which the built space can live its own life again, according to the forms, rhythms, and ways of those who will dwell there. Therefore the project cannot avoid to take a stance towards reality and society, towards the polis in which it is located. In the case of a religious building, it needs to take a stance towards its church. We studied ten years before starting our project – the restoration of the monastery of San Masseo (Assisi) – so that we could understand what the living stones were narrating, beyond abandonment, ruins and additions.
