Abstract: Electron-neutrino charged-current interactions with xenon nuclei were modeled in the nEXO neutrinoless double-beta decay detector (~5-tonne, 90% ${}^{136}$Xe, 10% ${}^{134}$Xe) to evaluate its sensitivity to supernova neutrinos. Predictions for event rates and detectable signatures were modeled using the MARLEY event generator. We find good agreement between MARLEY's predictions and existing theoretical calculations of the inclusive cross sections at supernova neutrino energies. The interactions modeled by MARLEY were simulated within the nEXO simulation framework and were run through an example reconstruction algorithm to determine the detector's efficiency for reconstructing these events. The simulated data, incorporating the detector response, were used to study the ability of nEXO to reconstruct the incident electron-neutrino spectrum and these results were extended to a larger xenon detector of the same isotope enrichment. We estimate that nEXO will be able to observe electron-neutrino interactions with xenon from supernovae as far as 5 to 8 kpc from earth, while the ability to reconstruct incident electron-neutrino spectrum parameters from observed interactions in nEXO is limited to closer supernovae., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: Large-scale low-background detectors are increasingly used in rare-event searches as experimental collaborations push for enhanced sensitivity. However, building such detectors, in practice, creates an abundance of radioassay data especially during the conceptual phase of an experiment when hundreds of materials are screened for radiopurity. A tool is needed to manage and make use of the radioassay screening data to quantitatively assess detector design options. We have developed a Materials Database Application for the nEXO experiment to serve this purpose. This paper describes this database, explains how it functions, and discusses how it streamlines the design of the experiment.

Abstract: Generative Adversarial Networks trained on samples of simulated or actual events have been proposed as a way of generating large simulated datasets at a reduced computational cost. In this work, a novel approach to perform the simulation of photodetector signals from the time projection chamber of the EXO-200 experiment is demonstrated. The method is based on a Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network - a deep learning technique allowing for implicit non-parametric estimation of the population distribution for a given set of objects. Our network is trained on real calibration data using raw scintillation waveforms as input. We find that it is able to produce high-quality simulated waveforms an order of magnitude faster than the traditional simulation approach and, importantly, generalize from the training sample and discern salient high-level features of the data. In particular, the network correctly deduces position dependency of scintillation light response in the detector and correctly recognizes dead photodetector channels. The network output is then integrated into the EXO-200 analysis framework to show that the standard EXO-200 reconstruction routine processes the simulated waveforms to produce energy distributions comparable to that of real waveforms. Abstract: A new search for two-neutrino double-beta ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{136}\rm Xe$ to the $0^+_1$ excited state of $^{136}\rm Ba$ is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. A deep learning-based convolutional neural network is used to discriminate signal from background events. Signal detection efficiency is increased relative to previous searches by EXO-200 by more than a factor of two. With the addition of the Phase II dataset taken with an upgraded detector, the median 90$\%$ confidence level half-life sensitivity of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay to the $0^+_1$ state of $^{136}\rm Ba$ is $2.9 \times 10^{24}~\rm yr$ using a total $^{136}\rm Xe$ exposure of $234.1~\rm kg~yr$. No statistically significant evidence for $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay to the $0^+_1$ state is observed, leading to a lower limit of $T^{2\nu}_{1/2}(0^+ \rightarrow 0^+_1) > 1.4\times10^{24}~\rm yr$ at 90$\%$ confidence level, improved by 70$\%$ relative to the current world's best constraint., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Abstract: Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu \beta \beta$), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0$\nu \beta \beta$ of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is $\leq$1\% energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value ($2458.07\pm 0.31$~keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value for the nEXO design.

Abstract: We present a search for electron-recoil signatures from the charged-current absorption of fermionic dark matter using the EXO-200 detector. We report an average electron recoil background rate of $6.8 \times 10^{-4}\, \mathrm{cts}\,\mathrm{kg}^{-1}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}\mathrm{keV}^{-1}$ above $4\,\mathrm{MeV}$ and find no statistically significant excess over our background projection. Using a total ${}^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ exposure of $234.1\,\mathrm{kg}\,\mathrm{yr}$ we exclude new parameter space for the charged-current absorption cross-section for dark matter masses between $m_\chi = 2.6\,\mathrm{MeV} - 11.6\,\mathrm{MeV}$ with a minimum of $6\times 10^{-51}\,\mathrm{cm}^2$ at $8.3\,\mathrm{MeV}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract: We report results from a search for the decay $B_s^0\rightarrow\eta\eta$ using 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $\Upsilon(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We do not observe any signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $14.3\times 10^{-5}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. Abstract: A search for Majoron-emitting modes of the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. This dataset consists of a total $^{136}$Xe exposure of 234.1 kg$\cdot$yr, and includes data with detector upgrades that have improved the energy threshold relative to previous searches. A lower limit of T$_{1/2}^{\rm{^{136}Xe}}>$4.3$\cdot$10$^{24}$ yr at 90\% C.L. on the half-life of the spectral index $n=1$ Majoron decay was obtained, a factor of 3.6 more stringent than the previous limit from EXO-200, corresponding to a constraint on the Majoron-neutrino coupling constant of $|\langle g_{ee}^{M}\rangle|$$<(0.4$-$0.9)\cdot10^{-5}$. The lower threshold and the additional data taken resulted in a factor 8.4 improvement for the $n=7$ mode compared to the previous EXO search. This search provides the most stringent limits to-date on the Majoron-emitting decays of $^{136}$Xe with spectral indices $n=1,2,3,$ and 7.

Abstract: The EXO-200 experiment searched for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe with a single-phase liquid xenon detector. It used an active mass of 110 kg of 80.6%-enriched liquid xenon in an ultra-low background time projection chamber with ionization and scintillation detection and readout. This paper describes the design and performance of the various support systems necessary for detector operation, including cryogenics, xenon handling, and controls. Abstract: The nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment is designed to use a time projection chamber and 5000 kg of isotopically enriched liquid xenon to search for the decay in $^{136}$Xe. Progress in the detector design, paired with higher fidelity in its simulation and an advanced data analysis, based on the one used for the final results of EXO-200, produce a sensitivity prediction that exceeds the half-life of $10^{28}$ years. Specifically, improvements have been made in the understanding of production of scintillation photons and charge as well as of their transport and reconstruction in the detector. The more detailed knowledge of the detector construction has been paired with more assays for trace radioactivity in different materials. In particular, the use of custom electroformed copper is now incorporated in the design, leading to a substantial reduction in backgrounds from the intrinsic radioactivity of detector materials. Furthermore, a number of assumptions from previous sensitivity projections have gained further support from interim work validating the nEXO experiment concept. Together these improvements and updates suggest that the nEXO experiment will reach a half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$ yr at 90% confidence level in 10 years of data taking, covering the parameter space associated with the inverted neutrino mass ordering, along with a significant portion of the parameter space for the normal ordering scenario, for almost all nuclear matrix elements. Abstract: We report the first direct measurement of the inclusive branching fraction ${\mathcal B}(B_s \rightarrow D_s X)$ via $B_s$ tagging in $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon$(5S) events. Tagging is accomplished through a partial reconstruction of semileptonic decays $B_s \rightarrow D_s X \ell \nu$, where $X$ denotes unreconstructed additional hadrons or photons and $\ell$ is an electron or muon. With 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $\Upsilon$(5S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider, we obtain ${\mathcal B}(B_s \rightarrow D_s X)$ = $(60.2 \pm 5.8 \pm 2.3)$\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: Silicon photomultipliers are regarded as a very promising technology for next-generation, cutting-edge detectors for low-background experiments in particle physics. This work presents systematic reflectivity studies of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) and other samples in liquid xenon at vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelengths. A dedicated setup at the University of M\"unster has been used that allows to acquire angle-resolved reflection measurements of various samples immersed in liquid xenon with 0.45{\deg} angular resolution. Four samples are investigated in this work: one Hamamatsu VUV4 SiPM, one FBK VUV-HD SiPM, one FBK wafer sample and one Large-Area Avalanche Photodiode (LA-APD) from EXO-200. The reflectivity is determined to be 25-36% at an angle of incidence of 20{\deg} for the four samples and increases to up to 65% at 70{\deg} for the LA-APD and the FBK samples. The Hamamatsu VUV4 SiPM shows a decline with increasing angle of incidence. The reflectivity results will be incorporated in upcoming light response simulations of the nEXO detector., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: nEXO is a proposed tonne-scale neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) experiment using liquid ${}^{136}Xe$ (LXe) in a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to read out ionization and scintillation signals. Between the field cage and the LXe vessel, a layer of LXe ("skin" LXe) is present, where no ionization signal is collected. Only scintillation photons are detected, owing to the lack of optical barrier around the field cage. In this work, we show that the light originating in the skin LXe region can be used to improve background discrimination by 5% over previous published estimates. This improvement comes from two elements. First, a fraction of the $\gamma$-ray background is removed by identifying light from interactions with an energy deposition in the skin LXe. Second, background from ${}^{222}Rn$ dissolved in the skin LXe can be efficiently rejected by tagging the $\alpha$ decay in the ${}^{214}Bi-{}^{214}Po$ chain in the skin LXe., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: We report the measurement of $e^+e^- \to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c.$ via initial-state radiation using a data sample of an integrated luminosity of 921.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ and nearby. We find evidence for an enhancement with a 3.4$\sigma$ significance in the invariant mass of $D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^- +c.c.$ The measured mass and width are $(4619.8^{+8.9}_{-8.0}({\rm stat.})\pm2.3({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}/c^{2}$ and $(47.0^{+31.3}_{-14.8}({\rm stat.})\pm4.6({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The mass, width, and quantum numbers of this enhancement are consistent with the charmonium-like state at 4626 MeV/$c^2$ recently reported by Belle in $e^+e^-\to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$ The product of the $e^+e^-\to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c.$ cross section and the branching fraction of $D^*_{s2}(2573)^-\to{\bar D}^0K^-$ is measured from $D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ threshold to 5.6 GeV., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We present the results of the first Dalitz plot analysis of the decay $D^{0}\to K^{-}\pi^{+}\eta$. The analysis is performed on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 953 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ KEKB collider. The Dalitz plot is well described by a combination of the six resonant decay channels $\bar{K}^{*}(892)^0\eta$, $K^{-}a_0(980)^+$, $K^{-}a_2(1320)^+$, $\bar{K}^{*}(1410)^0\eta$, $K^{*}(1680)^-\pi^{+}$ and $K_2^{*}(1980)^-\pi^{+}$, together with $K\pi$ and $K\eta$ S-wave components. The decays $K^{*}(1680)^{-}\to K^{-}\eta$ and $K_{2}^{*}(1980)^{-}\to K^{-}\eta$ are observed for the first time. We measure ratio of the branching fractions, $\frac{\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\to K^{-}\pi^{+}\eta)}{\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\to K^{-}\pi^{+})}=0.500\pm0.002{\rm(stat)}\pm0.020{\rm(syst)}\pm0.003{\rm (\mathcal{B}_{PDG})}$. Using the Dalitz fit result, the ratio $\frac{\mathcal{B}(K^{*}(1680)\to K\eta)}{\mathcal{B}(K^{*}(1680)\to K\pi)}$ is measured to be $0.11\pm0.02{\rm(stat)}^{+0.06}_{-0.04}{\rm(syst)}\pm0.04{\rm(\mathcal{B}_{\text{PDG}})}$; this is much lower than the theoretical expectations ($\approx1$) made under the assumption that $K^{*}(1680)$ is a pure $1^{3}D_1$ state. The product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to [K_2^{*}(1980)^-\to K^{-}\eta]\pi^{+})=(2.2^{+1.7}_{-1.9})\times10^{-4}$ is determined. In addition, the $\pi\eta^{\prime}$ contribution to the $a_0(980)^{\pm}$ resonance shape is confirmed with 10.1$\sigma$ statistical significance using the three-channel Flatt\'{e} model. We also measure $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to\bar{K}^{*}(892)^0\eta)=(1.41^{+0.13}_{-0.12})\%$. This is consistent with, and more precise than, the current world average $(1.02\pm0.30)\%$, deviates with a significance of more than $3\sigma$ from the theoretical predictions of (0.51-0.92)%., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden non-unique $\beta$-decay transition $^{137}\textrm{Xe}(7/2^-)\to\,^{137}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)$. The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultra-low background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal-to-background ratio of more than 99-to-1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden non-unique $\beta$-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump., Comment: Version as accepted by PRL

Abstract: We report new measurements of the production cross sections of pairs of charged pions and kaons as a function of their fractional energies using various fractional-energy definitions. Two different fractional-energy definitions were used and compared to the conventional fractional-energy definition reported previously. The new variables aim at either identifying dihadron cross sections in terms of single-hadron fragmentation functions, or to provide a means of characterizing the transverse momentum created in the fragmentation process. The results were obtained applying the updated initial-state radiation correction used in other recent Belle publications on light-hadron production cross sections. In addition, production cross sections of single charged pions, kaons, and protons were also updated using this initial-state radiation correction. Abstract: Using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ BB pairs collected on the ${\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the observations of $B^0\to p{\bar p}\pi^+\pi^-$ and $B^+ \to p{\bar p}\pi^+\pi^0$. We measure a decay branching fraction of $(0.83 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.17) \times 10^-6$ in $B^0\to p{\bar p}\pi^+\pi^-$ for $M_{\pi^+\pi^-} < 1.22 GeV/c^2$ with a significance of 5.5 standard deviations. The contribution from $B0 \to p{\bar p}K^0$ is excluded. We measure a decay branching fraction of $(4.58 \pm 1.17 \pm 0.67) \times 10^-6$ for $B^+ \to p{\bar p}\pi^+\pi^0$ with $M_{\pi^+\pi^0} < 1.3 GeV/c^2$ with a significance of 5.4 standard deviations. Abstract: Characterization of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is important for large-scale SiPM-based photodetector systems. We report the angular dependence of the specular reflectance in a vacuum of SiPMs manufactured by Fondazionc Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) over wavelengths ranging from 120 nm to 280 nm. Refractive index and extinction coefficient of the thin silicon-dioxide film deposited on the surface of the FBK SiPMs are derived from reflectance data of a FBK silicon wafer with the same deposited oxide film as SiPMs. The diffuse reflectance of SiPMs is also measured at 193 nm. We use the VUV spectral dependence of the optical constants to predict the reflectance of the FBK silicon wafer and FBK SiPMs in liquid xenon.

Abstract: Using the data sample of 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $\Upsilon(4S)$ on-resonance data taken by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider, we present the first measurements of branching fractions of the decays $B^{-} \to \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} \Xi_{c}^{'0}$, $B^{-} \to \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} \Xi_{c}(2645)^{0}$, and $B^{-} \to \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} \Xi_{c}(2790)^{0} $. The signal yields for these decays are extracted from the recoil mass spectrum of the system recoiling against $\bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-}$ baryons in selected $B^-$ candidates. The branching fraction of $B^{-} \to \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} \Xi_{c}(2790)^{0}$ is measured to be $ (1.1 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The 90\% credibility level upper limits on ${\cal B}(B^{-} \to \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} \Xi_{c}^{'0})$ and ${\cal B}(B^{-} \to \bar{\Lambda}_{c}^{-} \Xi_{c}(2645)^{0})$ are determined to be $6.5\times 10^{-4}$ and $7.9\times 10^{-4}$, respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Measurements of electron drift properties in liquid and gaseous xenon are reported. The electrons are generated by the photoelectric effect in a semi-transparent gold photocathode driven in transmission mode with a pulsed ultraviolet laser. The charges drift and diffuse in a small chamber at various electric fields and a fixed drift distance of 2.0 cm. At an electric field of 0.5 kV/cm, the measured drift velocities and corresponding temperature coefficients respectively are $1.97 \pm 0.04$ mm/$\mu$s and $(-0.69\pm0.05)$\%/K for liquid xenon, and $1.42 \pm 0.03$ mm/$\mu$s and $(+0.11\pm0.01)$\%/K for gaseous xenon at 1.5 bar. In addition, we measure longitudinal diffusion coefficients of $25.7 \pm 4.6$ cm$^2$/s and $149 \pm 23$ cm$^2$/s, for liquid and gas, respectively. The quantum efficiency of the gold photocathode is studied at the photon energy of 4.73 eV in liquid and gaseous xenon, and vacuum. These charge transport properties and the behavior of photocathodes in a xenon environment are important in designing and calibrating future large scale noble liquid detectors.

Abstract: Using a data sample of 921.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector, we study the process of $e^+e^-\to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$ via initial-state radiation. We report the first observation of a vector charmoniumlike state decaying to $D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c.$ with a significance of 5.9$\sigma$, including the systematic uncertainties. The measured mass and width are $(4625.9^{+6.2}_{-6.0}({\rm stat.})\pm0.4({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}/c^{2}$ and $(49.8^{+13.9}_{-11.5}({\rm stat.})\pm4.0({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. Abstract: We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the $\Upsilon(1S)$ into a charmonium state. The statistical significance of the observed signal of $\Upsilon(1S) \to \gamma \chi_{c1}$ is 6.3 standard deviations including systematics. The branching fraction is calculated to be Br($\Upsilon(1S) \to \gamma \chi_{c1}$) = (4.7^{+2.4}_{-1.8} (stat) ^{+0.4}_{-0.5} (sys)) * 10^{-5}. We also searched for $\Upsilon(1S)$ radiative decays into $\chi_{c0,2}$ and $\eta_c(1S,2S)$ and set upper limits on their branching fractions. These results are obtained from a 24.9 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at a center-of-mass energy equal to the $\Upsilon(2S)$ mass using $\Upsilon(1S)$ tagging by the $\Upsilon(2S) \to \Upsilon(1S) \pi^+\pi^-$ transitions., Comment: 7pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Understanding reflective properties of materials and photodetection efficiency (PDE) of photodetectors is important for optimizing energy resolution and sensitivity of the next generation neutrinoless double beta decay, direct detection dark matter, and neutrino oscillation experiments that will use noble liquid gases, such as nEXO, DARWIN, DarkSide-20k, and DUNE. Little information is currently available about reflectivity and PDE in liquid noble gases, because such measurements are difficult to conduct in a cryogenic environment and at short enough wavelengths. Here we report a measurement of specular reflectivity and relative PDE of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with 50 micrometer micro-cells conducted with xenon scintillation light (~175 nm) in liquid xenon. The specular reflectivity at 15 deg. incidence of three samples of VUV4 SiPMs is found to be 30.4+/-1.4%, 28.6+/-1.3%, and 28.0+/-1.3%, respectively. The PDE at normal incidence differs by +/-8% (standard deviation) among the three devices. The angular dependence of the reflectivity and PDE was also measured for one of the SiPMs. Both the reflectivity and PDE decrease as the angle of incidence increases. Abstract: The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions, and might hint to a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$, based on a data sample containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. In this analysis the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side $\tau$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$, $1.1$ and $0.8$ standard deviations for $\mathcal{R}(D)$, $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ performed to date as well as the first result for $\mathcal{R}(D)$ based on a semileptonic tagging method., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: This work reports the first observation of azimuthal asymmetries around the thrust axis in $e^+e^-$ annihilation of pairs of back-to-back charged pions in one hemisphere, and $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons in the opposite hemisphere. These results are complemented by a new analysis of pairs of back-to-back charged pions. The $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ asymmetries rise with the relative momentum $z$ of the detected hadrons as well as with the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. These asymmetries are sensitive to the Collins fragmentation function $H_1^{\perp}$ and provide complementary information to previous measurements with charged pions and kaons in the final state. In particular, the $\eta$ final states will provide additional information on the flavor structure of $H_1^{\perp}$. This is the first measurement of the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of the Collins fragmentation function from Belle data. Abstract: We present the first model-independent measurement of the CKM unitarity triangle angle $\phi_3$ using $B^{\pm}\to D(K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0)K^{\pm}$ decays, where $D$ indicates either a $D^{0}$ or $\overline{D}^{0}$ meson. Measurements of the strong-phase difference of the $D \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ amplitude obtained from CLEO-c data are used as input. This analysis is based on the full Belle data set of $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ events collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. We obtain $\phi_3 = (5.7~^{+10.2}_{-8.8} \pm 3.5 \pm 5.7)^{\circ}$ and the suppressed amplitude ratio $r_{B} = 0.323 \pm 0.147 \pm 0.023 \pm 0.051$. Here the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic, and the third is due to the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured from CLEO-c data. The 95% confidence interval on $\phi_3$ is $(-29.7,~109.5)^{\circ}$, which is consistent with the current world average.

The $\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^- \nu_\tau e^+ e^-$ decay is observed for the first time with 7.0$\sigma$ significance. The partial branching fraction determined by the structure-dependent mechanisms mediated by either a vector or an axial-vector current for the mass region $M_{\pi e e}>1.05$ GeV/$c^2$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(\tau^-\rightarrow \pi^- \nu_\tau e^+ e^-)[M_{\pi^- e^+ e^-}>1.05~{\rm GeV}/c^2] = (5.90 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.85 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-6}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the model dependence. In the full phase space, due to the different detection efficiencies for the structure-dependent mechanisms mediated by axial-vector and vector currents, the branching fraction varies from $\mathcal{B}_{A}(\tau^-\rightarrow \pi^- \nu_\tau e^+ e^-) = (1.46 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-5}$ to $\mathcal{B}_{V}(\tau^-\rightarrow \pi^- \nu_\tau e^+ e^-) = (3.01 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.43) \times 10^{-5}$, respectively. An upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the $\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^- \nu_\tau \mu^+ \mu^-$ decay, $\mathcal{B}(\tau^-\rightarrow \pi^- \nu_\tau \mu^+ \mu^-) < 1.14 \times 10^{-5}$, at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted by PRD(RC)

Abstract: We report an experimental determination of the isospin of $\Lambda_c(2765)^+/\Sigma_c(2765)^+$ using 980 fb$^{-1}$ data in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation around $\sqrt{s} = 10.6$ GeV collected by the Belle detector located at the KEKB collider. The isospin partners are searched for in the $\Sigma_c(2455)^{++/0} \pi^{0}$ channels, and no evidence was obtained. Abstract: Liquid xenon (LXe) is employed in a number of current and future detectors for rare event searches. We use the EXO-200 experimental data to measure the absolute scintillation and ionization yields generated by $\gamma$ interactions from $^{228}$Th (2615~keV), $^{226}$Ra (1764~keV) and $^{60}$Co (1332~keV and 1173~keV) calibration sources, over a range of electric fields. The $W$-value that defines the recombination-independent energy scale is measured to be $11.5~\pm~0.5$~(syst.)~$\pm~0.1$~(stat.) eV. These data are also used to measure the recombination fluctuations in the number of electrons and photons produced by the calibration sources at the MeV-scale, which deviate from extrapolations of lower-energy data. Additionally, a semi-empirical model for the energy resolution of the detector is developed, which is used to constrain the recombination efficiency, i.e., the fraction of recombined electrons that result in the emission of a detectable photon. Detailed measurements of the absolute charge and light yields for MeV-scale electron recoils are important for predicting the performance of future neutrinoless double beta decay detectors.

Abstract: nEXO is a proposed experiment to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{136}$Xe in a tonne-scale liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The nEXO TPC will be equipped with charge collection tiles to form the anode. In this work, the charge reconstruction performance of this anode design is studied with a dedicated simulation package. A multi-variate method and a deep neural network are developed to distinguish simulated $0\nu\beta\beta$ signals from backgrounds arising from trace levels of natural radioactivity in the detector materials. These simulations indicate that the nEXO TPC with charge-collection tiles shows promising capability to discriminate the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal from backgrounds. The estimated half-life sensitivity for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay is improved by $\sim$20$~(32)\%$ with the multi-variate~(deep neural network) methods considered here, relative to the sensitivity estimated in the nEXO pre-conceptual design report.

Abstract: A search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{136}$Xe is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset using a deep neural network to discriminate between $0\nu\beta\beta$ and background events. Relative to previous analyses, the signal detection efficiency has been raised from 80.8% to 96.4$\pm$3.0% and the energy resolution of the detector at the Q-value of $^{136}$Xe $0\nu\beta\beta$ has been improved from $\sigma/E=1.23\%$ to $1.15\pm0.02\%$ with the upgraded detector. Accounting for the new data, the median 90% confidence level $0\nu\beta\beta$ half-life sensitivity for this analysis is $5.0 \cdot 10^{25}$ yr with a total $^{136}$Xe exposure of 234.1 kg$\cdot$yr. Abstract: We report the results of a search for the decay $B^0 \to X(3872)(\to J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^-) \gamma$. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $711\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ and containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider running at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance energy. We find no evidence for a signal and place an upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to X(3872)\gamma)\times \mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^-) < 5.1 \times 10^{-7}$ at 90% confidence level., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We report a new measurement of the $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(nS)\pi^+\pi^-$ ($n=1,2,3$) cross sections at energies from 10.52 to 11.02 GeV using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We observe a new structure in the energy dependence of the cross sections; if described by a Breit-Wigner function its mass and width are found to be $M=(10752.7\pm5.9\,^{+0.7}_{-1.1})\,$MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma=(35.5^{+17.6}_{-11.3}\,^{+3.9}_{-3.3})\,$MeV, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The global significance of the new structure including systematic uncertainty is 5.2 standard deviations. We also find evidence for the $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(1S)\pi^+\pi^-$ process at the energy 10.52 GeV, which is below the $B\bar{B}$ threshold., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, final version accepted by JHEP

Abstract: We report a search for $X(3872)$ and $X(3915)$ in $B^+ \to \chi_{c1} \pi^0 K^+$ decays. Abstract: We report a search for the charmless baryonic decay $B^0\to p\bar{p}\pi^0$ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711~$\rm fb^{-1}$ containing $(772\pm 10)\times 10^6$ $B^0\bar{B}^0$ pairs. The data was collected by the Belle experiment running on the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to p\bar{p}\pi^0)= (5.0\pm1.8\pm0.6 )\times 10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The signal has a significance of 3.1 standard deviations and constitutes the first evidence for this decay mode. We also search for the intermediate two-body decays $B^{0}\to\Delta^+\bar{p}$ and $B^0\to\bar{\Delta}^-p$, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction: $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to \Delta^+\bar{p})+\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\bar{\Delta}^-p)<1.6\times10^{-6}$ at 90% confidence level., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to Phys. Abstract: A search for the decays $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ and $B^0 \rightarrow h_c K_S^0$ is performed. Evidence for the decay $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ is found; its significance is $4.8\sigma$. No evidence is found for $B^0 \rightarrow h_c K_S^0$. The branching fraction for $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ is measured to be $(3.7^{+1.0}_{-0.9}{}^{+0.8}_{-0.8}) \times 10^{-5}$; the upper limit for the $B^0 \rightarrow h_c K_S^0$ branching fraction is $1.4 \times 10^{-5}$ at $90\%$ C.L. In addition, a study of the $p \bar{p} \pi^+ \pi^-$ invariant mass distribution in the channel $B^+ \to (p \bar{p} \pi^+ \pi^-) K^+$ results in the first observation of the decay $\eta_c(2S) \to p \bar{p} \pi^+ \pi^-$ with $12.1\sigma$ significance. Abstract: In this paper we report on the characterization of the Hamamatsu VUV4 (S/N: S13370-6152) Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) sensitive Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as part of the development of a solution for the detection of liquid xenon scintillation light for the nEXO experiment. Various SiPM features, such as: dark noise, gain, correlated avalanches, direct crosstalk and Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) were measured in a dedicated setup at TRIUMF. SiPMs were characterized in the range $163 \text{ } \text{K} \leq \text{T}\leq 233 \text{ } \text{K}$. At an over voltage of $3.1\pm0.2$ V and at $\text{T}=163 \text{ }\text{K}$ we report a number of Correlated Avalanches (CAs) per pulse in the $1 \upmu\text{s}$ interval following the trigger pulse of $0.161\pm0.005$. At the same settings the Dark-Noise (DN) rate is $0.137\pm0.002 \text{ Hz/mm}^{2}$. Both the number of CAs and the DN rate are within nEXO specifications. The PDE of the Hamamatsu VUV4 was measured for two different devices at $\text{T}=233 \text{ }\text{K}$ for a mean wavelength of $189\pm7\text{ nm}$. At $3.6\pm0.2$ V and $3.5\pm0.2$ V of over voltage we report a PDE of $13.4\pm2.6\text{ }\%$ and $11\pm2\%$, corresponding to a saturation PDE of $14.8\pm2.8\text{ }\%$ and $12.2\pm2.3\%$, respectively. Both values are well below the $24\text{ }\%$ saturation PDE advertised by Hamamatsu. More generally, the second device tested at $3.5\pm0.2$ V of over voltage is below the nEXO PDE requirement. The first one instead yields a PDE that is marginally close to meeting the nEXO specifications. This suggests that with modest improvements the Hamamatsu VUV4 MPPCs could be considered as an alternative to the FBK-LF SiPMs for the final design of the nEXO detector.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the $D^{\ast -}$ meson polarization in the decay $B^0 \to D^{*-} \tau^+\nu_{\tau}$ using the full data sample of 772$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Abstract: We study charmless hadronic decays of charged $B$ mesons to the final states $K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}$ and $K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{\pm}$ using a $711 fb^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, and was collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. For $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}$, the measured branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry are $[10.42\pm0.43(stat)\pm 0.22(syst)]\times10^{-6}$ and [$+1.6\pm3.9(stat)\pm 0.9(syst)$]%, respectively. In the absence of a statistically significant signal for $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{\pm}$, we obtain a 90% confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction as $8.7 \times10^{-7}$.

Abstract: We present the first measurements of absolute branching fractions of $\Xi_c^0$ decays into $\Xi^- \pi^+$, $\Lambda K^- \pi^+$, and $p K^- K^- \pi^+$ final states. The measurements are made using a data set comprising $(772\pm 11)\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We first measure the absolute branching fraction for $B^- \to \bar{\Lambda}_c^- \Xi_c^0$ using a missing-mass technique; the result is ${\cal B}(B^- \to \bar{\Lambda}_c^- \Xi_c^0) = (9.51 \pm 2.10 \pm 0.88) \times 10^{-4}$. We subsequently measure the product branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^- \to \bar{\Lambda}_c^- \Xi_c^0){\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to \Xi^- \pi^+)$, ${\cal B}( B^- \to \bar{\Lambda}_c^- \Xi_c^0) {\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to \Lambda K^- \pi^+)$, and ${\cal B}( B^- \to \bar{\Lambda}_c^- \Xi_c^0) {\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to p K^- K^- \pi^+)$ with improved precision. Dividing these product branching fractions by the result for $B^- \to \bar{\Lambda}_c^- \Xi_c^0$ yields the following branching fractions: ${\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to \Xi^- \pi^+)= (1.80 \pm 0.50 \pm 0.14)\%$, ${\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to \Lambda K^- \pi^+)=(1.17 \pm 0.37 \pm 0.09)\%$, and ${\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to p K^- K^- \pi^+)=(0.58 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.05)\%.$ For the above branching fractions, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Our result for ${\cal B}(\Xi_c^0 \to \Xi^- \pi^+)$ can be combined with $\Xi_c^0$ branching fractions measured relative to $\Xi_c^0 \to \Xi^- \pi^+$ to yield other absolute $\Xi_c^0$ branching fractions., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication as a Letter in Physical Review Letters

Abstract: We present the result of the search for the rare $B$ meson decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} \nu_{\ell} \gamma$ with $\ell =e,\mu$. For the search the full data set recorded by the Belle experiment of $711 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity near the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance is used. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies $E_{\gamma}$ larger than $1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second $B$ meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side $B$ meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side $B$ meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction $ \Delta \mathcal{B} $ with $E_{\gamma}> 1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of $\Delta \mathcal{B}( B^{+} \to \ell^{\, +} \nu_{\ell} \gamma) < 3.0 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% CL and also report an upper limit on the first inverse moment of the light-cone distribution amplitude of the $B$ meson of $\lambda_B$ at 90% CL.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the doubly-strange baryon $\Xi(1620)^0$ in its decay to $\Xi^-\pi^+$ via $\Xi_c^+ \rightarrow \Xi^- \pi^+ \pi^+$ decays based on a $980\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The mass and width are measured to be 1610.4 $\pm$ 6.0 (stat) $^{+5.9}_{-3.5}$ (syst)~MeV$/c^2$ and 59.9 $\pm$ 4.8 (stat) $^{+2.8}_{-3.0}$ (syst)~MeV, respectively. We obtain 4.0$\sigma$ evidence of the $\Xi(1690)^0$ with the same data sample. Abstract: We search for $CP$ violation in the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $988\text{ }{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure a set of five kinematically dependent $CP$ asymmetries, of which four asymmetries are measured for the first time. The set of asymmetry measurements can be sensitive to $CP$ violation via interference between the different partial-wave contributions to the decay and performed on other pseudoscalar decays. Abstract: We report a measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S \pi^0 \pi^0$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment runnin g at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. This decay proceeds mainly via a $b\to sd\bar{d}$ "penguin" amplitude. The results are $\sin 2\phi^{\rm eff}_1 = 0.92^{+0.27}_{-0.31}~$ (stat.) $\pm 0.11$ (syst.) and $\mathcal{A} = 0.28 \pm 0.21$ (stat.) $\pm 0.04$ (syst.), which are the most precise measurements of $CP$ violati on in this decay mode to date. The value for the $CP$-violating parameter $\sin 2\phi^{\rm eff}_1$ is consistent with that obtained using decay modes proceeding via a $b\to c\bar{c}s$ "tree" amplitude., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRD(RC)

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ from $B^{0} \to D^{*-} \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ decays, reconstructed with the full Belle data set of $711 \, \rm fb^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. Two form factor parameterizations, originally conceived by the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) and the Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL) groups, are used to extract the product $\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}|$ and the decay form factors, where $\mathcal{F}(1)$ is the normalization factor and $\eta_{\rm EW}$ is a small electroweak correction. In the CLN parameterization we find $\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}| = (35.06 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{-3}$, $\rho^{2}=1.106 \pm 0.031 \pm 0.007$, $R_{1}(1)=1.229 \pm 0.028 \pm 0.009$, $R_{2}(1)=0.852 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.006$. For the BGL parameterization we obtain $\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}|= (34.93 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.59)\times 10^{-3}$, which is consistent with the World Average when correcting for $\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}$. The branching fraction of $B^{0} \to D^{*-} \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\rightarrow D^{*-}\ell^{+}\nu_{\ell}) = (4.90 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.16)\%$. We also present a new test of lepton flavor universality violation in semileptonic $B$ decays, $\frac{{\cal B }(B^0 \to D^{*-} e^+ \nu)}{{\cal B }(B^0 \to D^{*-} \mu^+ \nu)} = 1.01 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.03~$. The errors correspond to the statistical and systematic uncertainties respectively. This is the most precise measurement of $\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}|$ and form factors to date and the first experimental study of the BGL form factor parameterization in an experimental measurement.
