Abstract

We compute the full-color two-loop five-gluon amplitude for the all-plus helicity configuration. In order to achieve this, we calculate the required master integrals for all permutations of the external legs, in the physical scattering region. We verify the expected divergence structure of the amplitude, and extract the finite hard function. We further validate our result by checking the factorization properties in the collinear limit. Our result is fully analytic and valid in the physical scattering region. We express it in a compact form containing logarithms, dilogarithms and rational functions., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). 9. Generalised Unitarity At One-Loop With Massive Fermions

Abstract

We describe an application of generalised unitarity to the computation of one-loop amplitudes with massive external fermions. We present analytic results for the cut-constructible parts of the leading colour contributions to the all-plus helicity configuration of the $t\bar{t}gg$ amplitude. Using a special choice for the helicity basis of the massive fermions we are able to obtain extremely compact analytic expressions. 10. Direct Extraction Of One Loop Rational Terms

Abstract

We present a method for the direct extraction of rational contributions to one-loop scattering amplitudes, missed by standard four-dimensional unitarity techniques. We use generalised unitarity in $D=4-2\e$ dimensions to write the loop amplitudes in terms of products of massive tree amplitudes. We find that the rational terms in $4-2\e$ dimensions can be determined from quadruple, triple and double cuts without the need for independent pentagon contributions using a massive integral basis. The additional mass-dependent integral coefficients may then be extracted from the large mass limit which can be performed analytically or numerically. We check the method by computing the rational parts of all gluon helicity amplitudes with up to six external legs. We also present a simple application to amplitudes with external massless fermions., Comment: 35 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

We consider a Higgs boson coupled to gluons via the five-dimensional effective operator H Tr G_{munu}G^{munu} produced by considering the heavy top quark limit of the one-loop coupling of Higgs and gluons in the standard model. We treat H as the real part of a complex field phi that couples to the selfdual gluon field strengths and compute the one-loop corrections to amplitudes involving phi, two colour adjacent negative helicity gluons and an arbitrary number of positive helicity gluons - the so-called phi-MHV amplitudes. We use four-dimensional unitarity to construct the cut-containing contributions and the recently developed recursion relations to obtain the rational contribution for an arbitrary number of external gluons. We solve the recursion relations and give explicit results for up to four external gluons. We apply the on-shell tree-level recursion relations of Britto, Cachazo, Feng and Witten to a variety of processes involving internal and external massive particles with spin. We show how to construct multi-vector boson currents where one or more off-shell vector bosons couples to a quark pair and number of gluons. We give compact results for single vector boson currents with up to six partons and double vector boson currents with up to four partons for all helicity combinations. We also provide expressions for single vector boson currents with a quark pair and an arbitrary number of gluons for some specific helicity configurations. We present MHV-rules for constructing perturbative amplitudes for a Higgs boson and an arbitrary number of partons. We give explicit expressions for amplitudes involving a Higgs and three negative helicity partons and any number of positive helicity partons - the NMHV amplitudes. We also present a recursive formulation of MHV rules that incorporates the Higgs, quarks and gluons. The recursion relations are valid for all non-MHV amplitudes. We present the universal two-loop splitting functions that describe the limits of two-loop $n$-point amplitudes of massless particles when two of the momenta are collinear. To derive the splitting amplitudes, we take the collinear limits of explicit two-loop four-point helicity amplitudes computed in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme. The $g \to gg$ splitting amplitude has recently been computed using the unitarity sewing method and we find complete agreement with the results of Ref. \cite{Bern:2lsplit}. The two-loop $q \to qg$ and $g \to q\bar q$ splitting functions are new results. Abstract

This thesis is an ethnographic exploration of the impact of genetic research on how obesity is understood, explained and experienced across scientific, political, personal and familial terrains. This thesis draws on three main areas of data: the historical, biomedical and scientific literature concerning obesity and causation; ethnographic work with Genetics of Obesity Study (GOOS) across the laboratory and clinical research facility conducted between November 2003 and August 2006; and ethnographic work and qualitative interviews conducted with up to three generations from 21 families recruited to GOOS. In short, the data suggested that a genetic diagnosis for obesity raises several different issues to those associated with other genetic conditions. In western societies, obesity is often equated with negative body image and health risks resulting in stigmatisation and blame being directed toward the individual and in the case of childhood obesity, also toward parents. While a genetic diagnosis may offer alternative explanations and relief from guilt, there is also a degree of ambivalence toward the result. The data suggest that assumed commentaries about the transformative impact of a genetic diagnosis are overstated. Participation in GOOS is prompted by a broad range of motivations: from hopes for cures to the belief in a mutual exchange of data and relationship between the GOOS team and family members. Yet the transfer of that information to other disciplines and services that families encounter in their everyday negotiations has been limited. This suggests that factors such as the historical and political context, lay and professional beliefs about the norms of human development, the context of care and the ambiguity between clinical care and research participation, are important for the construction of a particular field and of disease status.

Abstract

Background: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) die on an average 20 years earlier to the general population. They have higher rates of multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Around 25% of people with ID report chronic constipation. The England Learning Disabilities Mortality Review found that nearly 25% of deaths identified constipation as a long‐term health problem. However, the likely risk factors for constipation related harm are poorly enumerated. We sought to identify possible specific high‐risk factors by examining the clinical characteristics of people with ID admitted to hospital with constipation. Methods: Data of people with ID admitted with constipation in two general hospitals covering a population of 1.3 million from 2017 to 2022 were reported using the STROBE guideline for cohort studies. Collected data included age, gender, intellectual disability severity, recorded medication, presenting complaint and co‐morbidities. The medication anticholinergic burden was calculated using the anticholinergic burden scale. Continuous variables were summarised by mean and standard deviation if normally distributed, with categorical variables summarised by the number and percentage in each category. Results: Of 46 admissions (males 52%), 57% had moderate to profound ID, 37% had epilepsy, 41% prescribed antiseizure medication (ASM) and 45% were on laxatives. Average age was 46 years. The anticholinergic burden score mean was 2.3 and median, one. Conclusions: We can hypothesise that people with more severe ID, suffering from epilepsy and on ASM may be more at risk of developing severe constipation. Abstract

Reliable assessment of the susceptibility of animal bacterial pathogens to antimicrobials is of paramount importance in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. This work aims to estimate the repeatability (intra-laboratory agreement) and reproducibility (inter-laboratory agreement) of the disc diffusion assay in veterinary laboratories to understand further if the assay has a role in the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in animals. Seven major veterinary laboratories from all States in Australia participated, and each tested the same panel of isolates five times at three to four-week intervals, against six antimicrobial agents using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute protocols. The panel consisted of twenty different isolates from porcine Escherichia coli from clinical cases and a single reference strain (ATCC 25922). Laboratories were blinded to the identity of the isolates, replicates, and to each other. In total, 4200 inhibition zone diameters (mm) were collected, and analysed descriptively, graphically, and with linear mixed models. Regardless of the laboratories and isolate/antimicrobial combinations, the overall very major error rate (proportion of isolates classified as susceptible when actual status is resistant) was 1.6%; the major error rate (proportion of isolates classified as resistant when actual status is susceptible) was 1.6%; and the ‘minor error’ rate (proportion of isolates with intermediate susceptibility that measure fully susceptible or resistant or vice versa) was 2.4%. The variation between repeated measurements ranged between 4.4–7.2 mm depending on the antimicrobial agent assessed. The reproducibility was always more variable than the repeatability, which suggested some laboratory effects. The repeatability coefficient of disc diffusion was lowest for tetracycline (4.4 mm, 95% CI: 3.8–5.0 mm) and ampicillin (4.6 mm, 95% CI: 4.2–5.2 mm) and highest for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (6.6 mm, 95% CI: 5.9–7.4 mm). Abstract

This study evaluated the diagnostic test accuracy of disc diffusion relative to broth-microdilution for clinical Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from dogs in Australia (n = 614). Accuracy of disc diffusion and broth-microdilution for oxacillin relative to mecA real-time PCR was also assessed. Each isolate had paired minimum inhibitory concentration and zone diameter values for ten antimicrobial agents. Data was dichotomised using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute susceptible and resistant clinical breakpoints. Test accuracy was reported using relative diagnostic sensitivity (RSe), specificity (RSp), likelihood ratio pairs, diagnostic odds ratio, and area-under-the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC AUC) analysis. Disc diffusion was found to have high test accuracy for most antimicrobials (ROC AUC range: 0.96 – 0.99) except rifampicin (ROC AUC = 0.80). The RSp of disc diffusion was high for all antimicrobials (range, 97.1% – 100%). However, RSe was considerably variable (range, 35.7% – 98.8%), particularly for amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (51.5%, 95% CI, 38.9%, 64.0%), cefoxitin (35.7%, 95% CI, 12.8%, 64.9%), and cephalothin (43.6%, 95% CI, 27.8%, 60.4%). When disc diffusion and broth-microdilution were compared to mecA real-time PCR, the overall accuracy of both assays was similar (ROC AUC, 0.99 respectively). However, the RSe for broth-microdilution (96.1%, 95% CI, 88.9%, 99.2%) was significantly higher than for disc diffusion (86.8%, 95% CI, 77.1%, 93.5%) (McNemars mid-p value 0.01). Overall, these findings demonstrate that for most antimicrobials, disc diffusion performed according to CLSI guidelines can be used to differentiate clinical S. pseudintermedius isolates that might otherwise be assessed by broth-microdilution, provided consideration is given to the performance estimates reported here.

Abstract

We compute the full-color two-loop five-gluon amplitude for the all-plus helicity configuration. In order to achieve this, we calculate the required master integrals for all permutations of the external legs, in the physical scattering region. We verify the expected divergence structure of the amplitude and extract the finite hard function. We further validate our result by checking the factorization properties in the collinear limit. Our result is fully analytic and valid in the physical scattering region. We express it in a compact form containing logarithms, dilogarithms, and rational functions.

This paper presents the results of a qualitative focus group study of attitudes and concerns toward learning information about biomarker-based risk status among healthy research participants in the United Kingdom and Spain and people with dementia and their supporters/caregivers from countries represented in the European Working Group of People with Dementia of Alzheimer Europe. The study identified expectations related to learning risk status and preferences related to the content, quality, and follow-up of the disclosure process. The latter emphasize distinctions between risk and diagnoses, the importance of clear information about risk, and suggestions for risk reduction, as well as expectations for follow up and support. The implications of these preferences for practice are discussed. Providing details of research participants' experience and views may serve as a guide for the development of processes for the responsible disclosure of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers.
