Abstract

Worldview conflict has been shown to determine prejudice toward members of groups holding opposite views. In two experimental studies, we aimed at generalizing the consequences of worldview conflict to the reception of immigrants by a host population. We hypothesized that members of a host population have a more favorable attitude toward immigrants when they share the same worldviews. In Study 1 (N = 181), we took the example of same‐sex marriage and showed that participants rated immigrants who held worldviews congruent with their own more favorably. In Study 2 (N = 467), we found that members of the host population were more favorable to a naturalization request by a high‐social‐status immigrant when s/he agreed with them concerning the Black Lives Matter movement. However, that worldviews congruency effect was not found for a low‐social‐status immigrant. Consequences of worldview conflict on the reception of immigrants are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The way politicians talk about minorities institutes the normative context of intergroup relations. We investigated how endorsement of different political discourses predicts donation and collective action intentions by majority members toward the Roma in five European countries. The survey was conducted online using samples demographically similar to the populations of Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, France, and Ireland (N = 5,054). First, results showed that accepting paternalistic discourse versus discourse promoting allyship were not distinguishable; both promoted higher moral inclusion which in turn predicted higher prosocial intentions. Second, donations (i.e., immediate relief) and collective action (i.e., social change action) were driven by identical factors. Third, acceptance of openly hostile political discourse neither predicted moral exclusion, nor lower prosocial intentions. In summary, our research provides important evidence that when it comes to Roma—non‐Roma relations, the previously established distinction between solidarity intentions that aim to solidify status relations versus bring about social change is completely blurred, presumably because of the social context in which any positive message communicates moral inclusion challenging the hostile status quo. 22. Intersectional Person Perception: A Scoping Review of Studies Investigating the Roles of Category Relationships and Cognitive Processes.

Abstract

This review considered experimental studies that used an intersectional framework in order to examine (1) how perceived relationship between the categories in a given intersection impacts the perception of its members and (2) how intersectional person perception has been studied through different cognitive processes. A systematic search in databases identified 5,393 records, and a screening processes resulted in 43 articles reporting 110 studies. The way intersectional targets were cognitively processed depended on contextual factors as well as on the perceived relationship between intersected identities (e.g., perceived [in-]congruence between identities). Less prototypical intersectional targets (e.g., Black gay men) sometimes experienced intersectional invisibility, facing both relative advantages (e.g., being less associated with certain negative stereotypes), and disadvantages (e.g., being overlooked, less recognized) compared to more prototypical members of their constituent ingroups (e.g., Black people, gay men). Future work should incorporate observed exceptions to these patterns and expand the cultural context of analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; Peu d’études en France ont examiné l’impact des stratégies d’acculturation choisies par lesimmigrés sur les relations intragroupes (pour une exception, voir Badea et al., 2015). En effet, laplupart des travaux ont concerné beaucoup plus le point de vue du groupe majoritaire français enidentifiant les préférences acculturatives significativement liées aux préjugés et à la discriminationenvers les immigrés (p.ex., Roblain et al., 2016). Face à la perception d’un rejet par la majorité, lesimmigrés peuvent chercher à trouver " refuge " ou " soutien " auprès d’autres personnes qui sontmembres de leur " communauté ". Ainsi, se confronter au rejet de la part de ses pairs, ou évoluerde façon différente sur la base du choix d’acculturation, peut avoir autant d’importance que d’êtrerejeté par la majorité, car les sources d’influence intragroupes peuvent parfois être plus fortes quecelles des exogroupes (Koch et al., 2020). Dans ce travail de recherche, nous avons souhaitéexaminer l’impact des stratégies d’acculturation sur les rapports entre des immigrés issus du mêmepays d’origine. Nous nous sommes focalisés sur l’assimilation et la séparation car ce sont deuxstratégies d’acculturation qui expriment un choix tranché entre la culture d’origine et la cultured’accueil, impliquant ainsi l’abandon ou le maintien extrême de la culture d’origine (Berry, 2005).Dans deux études interrogeant des immigrés malgaches (N = 111) et maghrébins (N = 106), unportrait fictif d’immigré malgache ou maghrébin adoptant une stratégie d’assimilation ou deséparation était présenté aux participants. Les participants devaient faire part de leur perceptionstéréotypique de la cible (compétence, sociabilité, moralité) et de leur soutien à la cible. Leur propreinclinaison envers les stratégies d’acculturation était mesurée. Les résultats ont révélé que lesimmigrés qui choisissent l’assimilation sont perçus comme plus compétents et plus sociables,surtout lorsque les participants eux-mêmes préfèrent cette stratégie. Les immigrés qui optent pourla séparation sont perçus comme étant plus moraux (échantillon magrébin) et reçoivent davantagede soutien social (les deux échantillons), comparés à ceux de la condition d’assimilation, surtout parles participants qui ont fait un choix similaire d’acculturation. La discussion portera sur la nécessitéde prendre en compte le contexte idéologique lorsqu’on examine les rapports intragroupes desimmigrés.

Abstract

There is evidence that democracies are under threat around the world while the quest for strong leaders is increasing. Although the causes of these developments are complex and multifaceted, here we focus on one factor: the extent to which citizens express materialist and post-materialist concerns. We explore whether objective higher levels of democracy are differentially associated with materialist and post-materialist concerns and, in turn, whether this is related to the wish for a strong leader. Testing this hypothesis across 27 countries (N = 5,741) demonstrated a direct negative effect of democracies’ development on the wish for a strong leader. Further, multi-level mediation analysis showed that the relation between the Democracy Index and the wish for a strong leader was mediated by materialist concerns. Abstract

The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries (N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subjective status and perceived legitimacy was never negative at any levels of eight moderator variables, although the positive association was sometimes reduced. Although not always consistent with hypotheses, group identification, selfesteem, and beliefs in social mobility were all associated with perceived legitimacy among people who have low subjective status. 35. Why do people perceive ingroup homogeneity on ingroup traits and outgroup homogeneity on outgroup traits?

Abstract

People tend to perceive ingroup homogeneity on ingroup stereotypical traits and outgroup homogeneity on outgroup stereotypical traits (e.g., Kelly, 1989; Simon, 1992a; Simon & Pettigrew, 1990). If it is assumed that people use homogeneity ratings to indicate the extent to which groups possess traits, then this stereotype effect may be interpreted as an expression of perceived trait possession (i.e., ingroups possess ingroup stereotypical traits and outgroups possess outgroup stereotypical traits). If it is further assumed that research participants abide by the conversational norm of appropriate quantity (e.g., Bless, Strack, & Schwarz, 1993), then this stereotype effect should be significantly reduced following prior expressions of perceived trait possession. A literature review and two minimal group experiments (Ns = 75, 104) supported this prediction. This evidence is discussed in relation to the outgroup homogeneity effect and self-categorization theory. Abstract

The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries (N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subjective status and perceived legitimacy was never negative at any levels of eight moderator variables, although the positive association was sometimes reduced. Although not always consistent with hypotheses, group identification, self-esteem, and beliefs in social mobility were all associated with perceived legitimacy among people who have low subjective status. Abstract

Abstract

This article investigates whether the perceived threat of terrorism explains the support for right-wing Eurosceptic parties and Euroscepticism above and beyond other relevant variables, including perceived economic and immigration threats. We first examined the entire Eurobarometer samples of 2014 and 2015, and then conducted survey experiments in four European Union (EU) countries, that is, United Kingdom (N = 197), France (N = 164), Italy (N = 312), and Romania (N = 144). Our findings suggest that the perceived threat of terrorism has a small effect on the negative attitudes toward the EU above and beyond the effect of immigration and economic threats and other basic control variables. The relationship between these variables varies across countries and it is less linear than we might expect.

Abstract

Societal inequality has been found to harm the mental and physical health of its members and undermine overall social cohesion. Here, we tested the hypothesis that economic inequality is associated with a wish for a strong leader in a study involving 28 countries from five continents (Study 1, N = 6,112), a study involving an Australian community sample (Study 2, N = 515), and two experiments (Study 3a, N = 96; Study 3b, N = 296). We found correlational (Studies 1 and 2) and experimental (Studies 3a and 3b) evidence for our prediction that higher inequality enhances the wish for a strong leader. We also found that this relationship is mediated by perceptions of anomie, except in the case of objective inequality in Study 1. This suggests that societal inequality enhances the perception that society is breaking down (anomie) and that a strong leader is needed to restore order (even when that leader is willing to challenge democratic values).

Abstract

Drawing on the rejection-identification (Branscombe et al., Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1999, 77, 135) and rejection-disidentification (Jasinskaja-Lahti et al., Applied Psychology: An International Review, 2009, 58, 105) models, we examined the effects of national identity misrecognition on attitudes toward the French mainstream society among Maghrebi-French and Muslim minority group members. We conducted a survey (N = 190) and two experiments (N = 103; 190), in which we measured and manipulated, respectively, the feeling of misrecognition (i.e., having one's national identity denied by the mainstream). Results showed that national identity misrecognition is a concept different from other forms of rejection by the majority group (i.e., perceived discrimination) (Studies 1 and 2). We also showed that feelings of misrecognition were related to higher hostility toward the mainstream (Studies 1 and 3) and higher identification with the national group (Study 3). In the discussion, we highlight the need for public policies to implement preventive actions against this form of rejection within French society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recent research has extensively investigated how the current COVID-19 pandemic can affect intergroup relations. Much less is known about the impact of COVID-19 on economic and trade decisions. Could the intergroup effects of this pandemic shape support for international economic policies? The aim of this study was to examine the support for restrictive economic policies towards countries with very high levels of COVID-19 contamination (China and Italy) during the first lockdown period (March - April 2020). The survey was conducted in Romania (N = 669) and included measures of COVID-19 vulnerability, prejudice, and support for economic restrictive policy (e.g., to reduce international trade; to set higher taxes). Results showed that higher support for restrictive policies toward China was associated with greater perceived vulnerability to COVID-19 and this link was partially mediated by prejudice toward China. In contrast, support for economic restrictive policies toward Italy was greater when perceived vulnerability to COVID-19 was high, but this relationship between variables was not explained by negative attitudes towards Italy. Abstract

International audience; Collective nostalgia for the good old days of the country thrives across the world. However, little is known about the social psychological dynamics of this collective emotion across cultures. We predicted that collective nostalgia is triggered by collective angst as it helps people to restore a sense of in-group continuity via stronger in-group belonging and out-group rejection (in the form of opposition to immigrants). Based on a sample (N = 5,956) of individuals across 27 countries, the general pattern of results revealed that collective angst predicts collective nostalgia, which subsequently relates to stronger feelings of in-group continuity via in-group belonging (but not via out-group rejection). Collective nostalgia generally predicted opposition to immigrants, but this was subsequently not related to in-group continuity.
