Background: Soils under organic farming systems exhibit better quality and higher biological activity than conventional systems. Manure addition, especially coupled with reduced or no tillage, significantly enhances microbial biomass and activity by improving soil physical properties and providing carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) sources. While several studies have examined the effects of transitioning from conventional to organic farming on soil chemistry and biochemistry, limited research has explored the influence of land use variations on soil fertility within long‐term organic farming systems. Aims: Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess how three different land uses—pasture, vegetable crops, and orchard—affected soil fertility under a long‐term organic farming system. Methods: Soil samples were collected from the 0 to 15 cm layer of plots used for pasture, vegetable crops and orchard, being the latter cover cropped with legumes, and analyzed to determine chemical and biochemical soil parameters. Results: Contrary to expectations, high land use intensity (vegetable crops and orchard soils) resulted in increased soil organic C and total N, compared to low intensity (pasture). Such an increase was ascribed to farmyard manure addition that counteracted the negative impact of tillage. Consequently, microbial biomass C and activity also increased. The greatest availability of organic substrates favored bacteria, particularly gram‐positive strains, shaping the microbial community. However, despite changes of microbial biomass and of the main microbial groups, microbial activity was only slightly affected, suggesting high functional redundancy of microorganisms in long‐term organic farming soil. Durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) is one of the most widely cultivated cereal species in the Mediterranean basin, supporting pasta, bread and other typical food productions. Considering its importance for the nutrition of a large population and production of high economic value, its supply is of strategic significance. Therefore, an early and accurate crop yield estimation may be fundamental to planning the purchase, storage, and sale of this commodity on a large scale. Multispectral (MS) remote sensing (RS) of crops using unpiloted aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a powerful tool to assess crop status and productivity with a high spatial–temporal resolution and accuracy level. The object of this study was to monitor the behaviour of thirty different durum wheat varieties commonly cultivated in Italy, taking into account their spectral response to different vegetation indices (VIs) and assessing the reliability of this information to estimate their yields by Pearson's correlation and different machine learning (ML) approaches. VIs allowed us to separate the tested wheat varieties into different groups, especially when surveyed in April. Pearson's correlations between VIs and grain yield were good (R2 > 0.7) for a third of the varieties tested; the VIs that best correlated with grain yield were CVI, GNDVI, MTVI, MTVI2, NDRE, and SR RE. Implementing ML approaches with VIs data highlighted higher performance than Pearson's correlations, with the best results observed by random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) models. This 2-year study aimed to verify whether the continuous application of no tillage (NT) for over 20 years, in comparison with conventional tillage (CT), affects nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions from a Vertisol and, if so, whether such an effect varies with crop sequence (continuous wheat, WW and wheat after faba bean, FW). To shed light on the mechanisms involved in determining N-gas emissions, soil bulk density, water filled pore space (WFPS), some carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools, denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA), and nitrous oxide reductase gene abundance (nosZ gene) were also assessed at 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil depth. Tillage system had no significant effect on total NH 3 emissions. On average, total N 2 O emissions were higher under NT (2.45 kg N 2 O-N ha − 1 ) than CT (1.72 kg N 2 O-N ha − 1 ), being the differences between the two tillage systems greater in FW than WW. The higher N 2 O emissions in NT treatments were ascribed to the increased bulk density, WFPS, and extractable organic C under NT compared to CT, all factors that generally promote the production of N 2 O. Moreover, compared to CT, NT enhanced the potential DEA (114 vs 16 μg N kg − 1 h − 1 ) and nosZ gene abundance (116 vs 69 copy number mg − 1 dry soil) in the topsoil. Finally, NT compared to CT led to an average annual increase in C stock of 0.70 Mg C ha − 1 year − 1 . Though NT can increase the amount os soil organic matter so storing CO 2 into soil, some criticisms related to the increase of N 2 O emission arise, thereby suggesting the need for defining management strategies to mitigate such a negative effect. No tillage (NT) soil management has largely been promoted because of its potential to generate both economic and environmental benefits. However, it often leads to reductions in crop yield and quality, which in many cases have been attributed to the effects this technique has on the nitrogen (N) dynamics in the soil–plant system. This 2-year study, performed within a long-term experiment in which NT was continuously applied for over 15 years, aimed to verify whether and to what extent the use of NT affects soil N availability, recovery of 15 N-labeled fertilizer, and N use efficiency (NUE) and its components (N uptake efficiency, NUpE; N utilization efficiency, NUtE). Durum wheat was the focal crop. NT was evaluated and compared with conventional tillage (CT) within three crop sequences: continuous wheat (WW), wheat–faba bean (WF), and wheat–berseem clover (WB). At the same time, the timing of N fertilization was varied (either distributing 100 kg N ha −1 all at once at crop emergence or applying 50% at crop emergence and 50% at the end of tillering; no N-fertilizer treatment was included as a control). The data indicated that, compared to CT, NT had a detrimental effect on wheat productivity in WW but improved yields in WF and WB. NT was associated with less N uptake by wheat, mainly attributable to a decrease in soil N availability, and to a lesser extent, to a decrease in the 15 N-fertilizer recovery. This reduction in uptake was markedly more evident in WW than in WF or WB, and when all of the 15 N-fertilizer was applied at crop emergence. The effects of tillage system on NUE varied by crop sequence: NT increased NUE (+18% on average compared to CT) in WF, but had the opposite effect in WW (−17% on average). These results suggest that the adoption of the NT technique by farmers must be accompanied by a reorganization of the components of crop management, such as crop rotation and the rate and timing of N fertilization. The nurses' strike in the United Kingdom: an overview of the reasons, debate and implications., Introduction: In the UK, where the National Health Service (NHS) was founded, one of the most important and long-lasting strikes in nursing is taking place., Aim: To understand the historical, professional, political/social reasons for the UK nurse's strike., Method: Historical, scientific literature and data from key informant interviews have been analysed. Data has been summarized narratively., Results: On 15th December 2022, more than 100,000 NHS nurses went on strike in England, Northern Ireland, and Wales asking for an increased salary; on the 6th and 7th of February and 1st of March the protest has continued. By improving pay, nurses believe the attractiveness of the profession can increase and counteract the loss of nurses who are leaving the public for the private sector, and the lack of attractiveness of the profession towards young people. The strike is organized by the Royal College of Nursing in a structured form which gives nurses precise information on how it should be explained to patients: according to a survey, 79% of the population supports the nurses' strike. However, not all agree with this strike action., Discussion: The media, social media and professional debate is passionate with some polarization between who is in favor and who is against. Nurses strike not only for better wages but also to increase patient safety. What we see in the UK today is the result of years of austerity, lack of investment and health priorities: a similar situation experienced in several countries as well.
