9. Local optical field variation in the neighborhood of a semiconductor micrograting

Abstract

The local optical field of a semiconductor micrograting (GaAs, 10x10 micro m) is recorded in the middle field region using an optical scanning probe in collection mode at constant height. The recorded image shows the micro-grating with high contrast and a displaced diffraction image. The finite penetration depth of the light leads to a reduced edge resolution in the direction to the illuminating beam direction while the edge contrast in perpendicular direction remains high (~100nm). We use the discrete dipole model to calculate the local optical field to show how the displacement of the diffraction image increases with increasing distance from the surface., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Intrinsic optical transition energies for isolated and individual single wall carbon nanotubes grown over trenches are measured using tunable resonant Raman scattering. Previously measured E22_S optical transitions from nanotubes in surfactants are blue shifted 70-90 meV with respect to our measurements of nanotubes in air. This large shift in the exciton energy is attributed to a larger change of the exciton binding energy than the band-gap renormalization as the surrounding dielectric constant increases., Comment: Due to a mistake, a different paper was submitted as "revised v2". Abstract

The development of new synthetic methods is paramount for the versatile production of complex multicomponent electrodes for supercapacitors with enhanced performance. The reactive inverse matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIMAPLE) technique shows promise for the deposition of complex functional nanocomposites in a facile way. In this work, hybrid supercapacitor electrodes constituted by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with a myriad of cerium and manganese oxide nanoparticles were obtained by using GO sheets, CNTs, CeO2 nanoparticles and, for the first time, the (NH4)2[Mn2(C6H5O7)2(H2O)2] coordination compound as precursors in the RIMAPLE targets. Compositional and structural characterizations revealed that post-annealing treatments at mild conditions (150-250 °C) induce a further reduction of the rGO and CNTs, besides an oxidation of the Ce oxide phases (Ce3+ to Ce4+) and a reduction of the Mn oxides (Mn3+ to Mn2+). The substantial change of the carbon and metal oxide nanostructures causes an up to 8-fold increase of the capacitance of the electrodes (63 F/cm3 @ 10 mV/s). Finally, the generation of a high quantity of edge defects at 250 °C and long dwell time leads to the drop of the electrode's capacitance.

Abstract

High resolution transmission electron microscopic, infrared spectroscopic and Raman spectroscopic analyses show that silicon powder obtained in a low pressure silane plasma is heterogeneous. Silicon powders exhibit differential structural properties depending upon the location of their collection in the reactor. Infrared spectra indicates aggregated silicon-hydrogen phases and the existence of oxidized phases in the powder, when exposed to air. Annealing at 300 degrees celsius results in a crystalline silicon-like Raman vibrational band.

Abstract

Variations in the hardness of a poly (ether ether ketone) beam electrically modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT, 0.5%-3%) are investigated. It is shown that both rupture and hardness variations correlate with the changes in carbon nanotube concentration when using micro indentation and extended Raman imaging. Statistical analysis of the relative spectral intensities in the Raman image is used to estimate local tube concentration and polymer crystallinity. We show that the histogram of the Raman D band across the image provides information about the amount of MWCNTs and the dispersion of MWCNTs in the composite. We speculate that we have observed a local modification of the ordering between pure and modified polymer. This is partially supported by small angle neutron scattering measurements, which indicate that the agglomeration state of the MWCNTs is the same at the concentrations studied. Abstract

Incorporation of carbon nanotubes into epoxy resin composites has the effect of increasing electrical conductivity at low percolation levels. An amphiphilic molecule such as palmitic acid has been used to increase the surface contact area and to improve the dispersion of the carbon nanotube bundles in the prepolymer. The chemical environment of the dispersed nanotubes has been probed using vibrational Raman spectroscopy. Spectroscopic Raman maps on sample surfaces (60×60 μm2) with ratios of nanotubes to palmitic acid varying from 1:2 to 2:1 by weight, have been recorded to test the uniformity of the dispersion. Substantial spatial inhomogeneities have been observed in the G-band shift and an additional spectral band at 1450 cm-1. The 1450 cm-1 band has been attributed to the CH3 group of the amphiphilic molecules adsorbed onto the nanotube surface. The maps are correlated with the measured electrical conductivity values. The highest conductivity has been observed for the best dispersed nanotubes and nanotubes with the highest degree of interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

9 pages with figures; We observe topography induced spectral shifts using high resolution grating spectrometers which we attribute to the fact that the focal spot has a finite size. The topography induced spectral shifts depend on spectrometer grating orientation and numerical aperture of the microscope objective. This is demonstrated by spectroscopic imaging trenches in GaAs in directions parallel and perpendicular the spectrometer entrance slit. Differences along the two directions of the LO phonon band show that the spectral shift is due to the variation of the grating angle across the non uniform illuminated focal spot caused by topography. Alignment errors of the optical axis lead to additional spectral shifts. Topography induced spectral shifts can be detected by recording spectra by scanning the sample in two perpendicular orientations with respect to the spectrometer entrance slit.

Abstract

International audience; We use sulfuric acid as pressure medium to extrapolate the G-band position of the inner and outer tubes of double-wall carbon nanotubes. Keeping the G-band position of the inner and outer tubes constant, we can determine the fraction of double-wall and single-wall tubes in samples containing a mixture of the two. A-band-related electronic interwall interaction at 1560 cm−1 is observed, which is associated with the outer tube walls. This band is observed to shift with pressure at the same rate as the G band of outer tubes and is not suppressed with chemical doping. Differences in the interwall interaction is discussed for double-wall carbon nanotubes grown by the catalytic chemical-vapor method and double-wall carbon nanotubes obtained through transformation of peapods.

Abstract

We compare the G and G'2D bands of single-, double- and triple-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We observe that the band shape is sensitive to the number of walls of the CNTs. For single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), the G band is composed of two distinct contributions G+ and G−, while the G band for double-wall nanotubes is composed of one band with twomain contributions from the inner and the outer tube. The G'2D band can be fitted with one Lorentzian for single-wall tubes, while two distinct contributions are observed for double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). Considerable variations of the G'2D band are found with similar first order Raman spectra. Annealing influences the D- and RBM-band intensities. Electron irradiation has the effect of decreasing the G- and D-band wavenumbers but does not enhance the D-band intensity considerably. The down-shifts of the G- and D-band wavenumbers are correlated and are the same for two excitation wavelengths. This is consistent with the scattering of phonons around the K-point.

Abstract

Abstract: We explore the defect formation on single‐layer graphene partially suspended over a microcavity upon etching by a focused electron beam in a reactive oxygen atmosphere. The formation of oxygenated defects in an area of several μm2 around the cut is studied by Raman spectroscopy. The narrow symmetric Raman D band has the same bandwidth as the G band line width of supported graphene. For suspended graphene, the D bandwidth is larger. From the ratio of the intensity of the Raman D and D′ band (ID/ID′), it is concluded that mainly sp3‐type defects are formed on supported graphene and more defects with a different spectral signature are formed on suspended graphene. Annealing in reductive H2/Ar atmosphere is found to remove bonded oxygen on supported graphene, whereas on suspended graphene with higher density of defects, defects are removed only partially. Abstract

International audience; We have examined several sets of heterogeneous double wall carbon nanotubes and analysed the frequency in a wide range of values. We have found that a statistical correlation exists between the D band intensity and the RBMs intensity. All the sample sets show a correlation of the RBM and D Raman intensity which is monotonic and non-linear using the 514nm laser excitation. Our results suggest that a similar mechanism is at the origin of the RBM and D bands. These results are corroborated by observations on carbon nanotubes embedded in a polymer matrix. We derive the phonon potential deformation for the D band and extend the excitation wavelength dependence of the D band to the UV. The intensity of the D band decreases with increasing hydrostatic pressure and fanishes at a pressure comparable to what has been observed earlier for the RBM and D* band.

Abstract

The design and engineering of heterogeneous nanocatalysts that are both highly active and selective for hydrogenation reactions constitute a crucial challenge. In that context, herein a series of Rh–C60nanocatalysts have been synthesized viathe decomposition of an organometallic rhodium complex in the presence of fullerene C60under a H2atmosphere. Rhodium atomically dispersed or rhodium nanoparticles on Rh–C60spherical fulleride particles were produced by tuning the Rh/C60molar ratio. Significant charge transfer between rhodium and C60was evidenced through Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which indicates electron-deficient Rh species. The resulting heterostructured nanomaterials were applied successfully in the catalytic hydrogenation of quinoline, exhibiting excellent activity and producing selectively the partially hydrogenated product, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the hydride coverage of the Rh NPs plays a key role in the adsorption modes of quinoline and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline on the surface of the NPs, and that these adsorption modes are modulated by the presence of fullerene C60, thus affecting the activity and selectivity obtained with this rhodium based catalyst.
