Abstract

Total cross sections for proton- and deuteron-induced-fission of 208Pb and 238U have been determined in the energy range between 500 MeV and 1 GeV. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics at GSI Darmstadt, facilitating the counting of the projectiles and the identification of the reaction products. High precision between 5 and 7 percent has been achieved by individually counting the beam particles and by registering both fission fragments in coincidence with high efficiency and full Z resolution. Fission was clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. The results were found to deviate by up to 30 percent from Prokofiev's systematics on total fission cross sections. There is good agreement with an elaborate experiment performed in direct kinematics., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Total fission cross sections of 181-Ta induced by protons at different relativistic energies have been measured at GSI, Darmstadt. The inverse kinematics technique used together with a dedicated set-up, made it possible to determine these cross sections with high accuracy. The new data obtained in this experiment will contribute to the understanding of the fission process at high excitation energies. The results are compared with data from previous experiments and systematics for proton-induced fission cross sections.

Abstract

On the basis of systematic measurements of fragmentation reactions, which provide a detailed overview on the velocity distributions of residual nuclei, an improved description of the kinematical properties of the fragmentation residues is established. This work is dedicated to the fluctuations of their momentum distributions. In contrast to previous investigations, limited to close-to-projectile fragments, we extended our study to the entire production range, down to the lightest observed fragments. In this context, beside the contribution of abrasion and evaporation processes, we considered the effect of the thermal break-up on the width of the momentum distributions. Using approximated theoretical descriptions of the different reaction stages, a new analytical formula for the variance of the momentum distribution is derived, which is well adapted to technical applications., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, background info. at http://www-wnt.gsi.de/charms/

Production cross-sections and longitudinal velocity distributions of the projectile-like residues produced in the reactions 112Sn + 112Sn and 124Sn + 124Sn both at an incident beam energy of 1 AGeV were measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the Fragment Separator (FRS) of GSI. For both reactions the characteristics of the velocity distributions and nuclide production cross sections were determined for residues with atomic number Z $\geq$ 10. Abstract

Today’s development of nuclear installations rely on numerical simulation for which the main input are evaluated nuclear data. Inelastic neutron scattering (n, xn) is a reaction of importance because it modifies the neutron population, the neutron energy distribution and may create new isotopes. The study of this reaction on tungsten isotopes is interesting because it is a common structural material. Additionally, tungsten isotopes are a good testing field for theories. The IPHC group started an experimental program with the GRAPhEME setup installed at the neutron beam facility GELINA to measure (n, xn γ) reaction cross sections using prompt gamma spectroscopy and neutron energy determination by time-of-flight. The obtained experimental data provide constraints on nuclear reaction mechanisms models for 182,184,186W. Indeed, to reproduce correctly the experimental (n, n’ γ) cross-sections, the reaction codes must include accurate models of the reaction mechanism, nuclear de-excitation process and use correct nuclear structure information.

Abstract

A better knowledge of $(n,xn)$ reaction cross sections is important for both reaction modeling and energy applications. This article focuses on inelastic scattering of neutrons off $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ for which improvements are needed to better constrain evaluations and solve inconsistencies in nuclear power reactor calculations. A new precise measurement of $(n,xn\ensuremath{\gamma})$ reaction cross sections on $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ has been performed at the GELINA (Geel Electron LINear Accelerator) neutron facility operated by EC-JRC-Geel (Belgium) with the GRAPhEME (GeRmanium array for Actinides PrEcise MEasurements) setup. The prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy method coupled to time-of-flight measurements is used to extract $(n,xn\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross section values which can be further combined to infer the total neutron inelastic scattering cross section. Cross section data for 18 $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transitions (five never measured before) are presented and compared to the data in the literature. Emphasis is especially given to the uncertainty determination to produce partial cross section data as accurate as possible. Due to intrinsic limitations of the experimental method, the use of additional nuclear structure information coupled with theoretical modeling is required to determine the total $(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ cross section over the whole neutron energy range. We have investigated modeling aspects of the $^{238}\mathrm{U}(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections related to the description of compound nucleus and preequilibirum mechanisms as well as the discrete part of nuclear structure. Through comparison between experimental and calculated $(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections, we pinpoint inaccuracies in the description of specific reaction mechanisms and challenge recently implemented models. This helps improving the whole modeling of the $(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ reaction.

Abstract

The experimental setup GRAPhEME (GeRmanium array for Actinides PrEcise MEasurements) has been used at GELINA (EC-JRC, Geel, Belgium) to perform (n,xn γ) cross sections measurements. GRAPhEME has been especially designed to take into account the specific difficulties generated by the use of actinides samples. This work takes place in the context of new nuclear data measurements for nuclear reactor applications. Considering the very tight accuracy requested for new experimental data, special care has been paid to quantify as accurately as possible all the uncertainties from the instruments and the analysis procedure. From the precise (n,xn γ) cross sections produced with GRAPhEME, the use of model calculations is required to obtain (n,xn) cross sections. Beyond the measurements, extensive work on theoretical models is necessary to achieve a better evaluation of the (n,xn) processes. In this paper, we will discuss the final step of the 238U data analysis and present some recent results obtained on 232Th compared to TALYS modellings. A new measurement campaign on 233U has started recently, a first assessment of the recorded data will be presented.

Abstract

Evaluated nuclear data bases currently used for numerical simulation for the development of nuclear reactors still present large uncertainties. Their improvement is necessary, in particular through better reaction models and nuclear data. Among the reactions of interest, (n, xn) reactions are of great importance for the operation of a reactor as they modify the neutron spectrum, the neutron population, and produce radioactive species. Experimental data on (n, xnγ) reaction provide strong constraints on nuclear reaction mechanism theories. Tungsten isotopes - which are deformed like actinides but do not fission - are of interest to test the models. 182,184,186W(n, xnγ) cross sections are measured; results are compared with model calculations by TALYS, EMPIRE and CoH codes.

Abstract

In the context of improvement of nuclear data bases for future nuclear reactor researches, we study (n,xn) reactions experimentally with the help of the (n,xn γ) technique. The experiments are performed at the GELINA facility which delivers a pulsed, white neutron beam. Several measurement campaigns have been performed on 235U, 232Th, 182,183,184,186W and 238U isotopes. A compilation of all these experimental cross sections (mostly still preliminary) compared to theoretical predictions will be discussed.

Abstract

In this work we have investigated total fission cross section of 181Ta+1H at FRS (FRagment Separator -GSI) at 1, 0.8, 0.5 and 0.3 GeV with an specific setup, providing high accuracy measurements of the cross section values. We compare the results obtained in this experiment, with several calculations performed with the intra-nuclear cascade model (INCL v4.1) coupled to de-excitation code (ABLAv3p), according to two different models describing fission process at high-excitation energies: statistical model of Bohr and Wheeler and the dynamical description of the fission process. The comparison with data of previous experiments is also discussed in order to address the existing discrepancies with this new results.

Abstract

Evaluated nuclear data bases currently used for numerical simulation for the development of nuclear reactors still present large uncertainties. Their improvement is necessary, in particular through better reaction models and nuclear data. Among the reactions of interest, (n, x n) reactions are of great importance for the operation of a reactor as they modify the neutron spectrum, the neutron population, and produce radioactive species. Experimental data on (n, x nγ) reaction provide strong constraints on nuclear reaction mechanism theories. Tungsten isotopes - which are deformed like actinides but do not fission - are of interest to test the models. 182,184,186 W(n, x nγ) cross sections are measured; results are compared with model calculations by TALYS, EMPIRE and CoH codes.

Abstract

The experimental setup GRAPhEME (GeRmanium array for Actinides PrEcise MEasurements) has been used at GELINA (EC-JRC, Geel, Belgium) to perform (n,xn γ) cross sections measurements. GRAPhEME has been especially designed to take into account the specific difficulties generated by the use of actinides samples. This work takes place in the context of new nuclear data measurements for nuclear reactor applications. Considering the very tight accuracy requested for new experimental data, special care has been paid to quantify as accurately as possible all the uncertainties from the instruments and the analysis procedure. From the precise (n,xn γ) cross sections produced with GRAPhEME, the use of model calculations is required to obtain (n,xn) cross sections. Beyond the measurements, extensive work on theoretical models is necessary to achieve a better evaluation of the (n,xn) processes. In this paper, we will discuss the final step of the 238 U data analysis and present some recent results obtained on 232 Th compared to TALYS modellings. A new measurement campaign on 233 U has started recently, a first assessment of the recorded data will be presented.

Abstract

Studies for advanced reactor systems such as sodium-cooled fast reactors designed for recycling of high level waste, accelerator driven systems for transmutation, and systems envisioning the use of the Th/U fuel cycle impose tight requirements on nuclear data for accurate predictions of their operation and safety characteristics. Among the identified needs established by sensitivity studies, neutron inelastic scattering on the main structural materials and actinides and some (n,xn) cross sections for actinides feature prominently. Prompt-gamma spectroscopy and time-of-flight techniques were used to measure (n,xnγ) cross-sections of interest. Experiments were performed at the GELINA neutron time-of-flight facility of IRMM. Results for 235U and 23Na are briefly recalled; pertaining theoretical discussions are mentioned to explain observations concerning 238U. The status of studies on 76Ge, Zr and Mo is also reported.

Abstract

In a series of measurements performed at the IGISOL facility at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla, the half-lives of 26Si, 29P, 30,31S, 42Ti and 62Ga were measured with high precision. These half-lives are important ingredients for tests of the weak-interaction standard model and allow, together with other experimental inputs and theoretical correction terms, the determination of the vector coupling constant of the weak interaction. The IGISOL method used in Jyvakyla is an ideal tool for these measurements as it allows to access all elements without distinction of their chemical properties.

Abstract

During the last 10 years, in the general context of nuclear energy applications and future reactors development, our collaboration has performed measurements of (n,x n $\gamma$ cross sections to study (n,xn) reactions. Large sets of new and accurate experimental data have been produced on a variety of nuclei from 7Li to 238U. Comparisons with nuclear reaction code calculations have shown that the predictions of these exclusive cross sections are a real challenge for the theoretical codes. Indeed many processes are involved as evaporation, fission if fissionable nucleus, direct and pre-equilibrium reactions, etc. All these processes should be simultaneously well described by the models that using nuclear structure description for optical potential, level densities, decay scheme, etc. In this article, we review what we have learned since the last P(ND)2 workshop held in 2005 (A.J.M. Plompen, Proceedings of the Perspectives on Nuclear data for the Next Decade Workshop, Bruyeres-le-Châtel, France, 26-28 September 2005, NEA Report N° 6121, p. 151) and highlight how we can further progress in this field in order to provide new, complete, accurate and relevant experimental data.

Abstract

Most of nuclear reactor developments are using evaluated data base for numerical simulations. However, the considered databases present still large uncertainties and disagreements. To improve their level of precision, new measurements are needed, in particular for (n, xnγ) reactions, which are of great importance as they modify the neutron spectrum, the neutron population, and produce radioactive species. In 2003, the IPHC group started an experimental program to measure (n, xnγ) reaction cross sections using prompt gamma spectroscopy and neutron energy determination by time of flight. Measurements of (n, xnY) cross section have been performed for 235, 238u, 232Th, nat, 182, 183, 184, 186W natZr The experimental setup, consisting of HPGe detectors and a fission chamber, is installed at the neutron beam at GELINA (Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Geel, Belgium). It has recently been upgraded with the addition of a highly segmented 36 pixels planar HPGe detector. The setup is equipped with a high rate digital acquisition system. The analysis of the segmented detector data requires a specific procedure to account for cross signals between pixels. An overall attention is paid to the precision of the measurement. The setup characteristic and the analysis procedure will be presented along with the acquisition and analysis challenges. Examples of results and their impact on models will be discussed. Finally, the perspectives on complimentary experiments will be presented.

Abstract

Spallation reactions on fissile nuclei represent an appropriate tool to investigate dissipative effects in nuclear fission. In this work, we have studied transient and dissipative effects in proton- and deuteron-induced fission on Pb208 at 500A MeV. A dedicated experimental setup optimized for inverse kinematics measurements made it possible to identify in atomic number both fission fragments with high resolution, and reconstruct the charge of the fissioning system. We could then determine the width of the fission fragments charge distribution as well as partial fission cross sections, both as a function of the charge of the fissioning system. These two complementary observables permitted us to investigate the dynamics of the process at small deformation, i.e., from the ground state to the saddle point. The description of these observables with advanced model calculations reveals the influence of the nuclear dissipation in the fission process at high excitation energy and in particular its manifestation through transient time effects.

Abstract

In an experiment at the LISE3 facility of GANIL, we have studied with high precision the $0^{+}\rightarrow 0^{+}$ $ \beta$ decay of 38Ca. The LISE3 facility allowed to produce close to pure samples of the nuclide of interest. We measured the half-life of this nucleus to be 443.63(35)ms, whereas the super-allowed branching ratio was determined to be 77.14(35)%. Both data are in nice agreement with previous high-precision measurements and thus improve the overall precision of the experimental inputs to determine the corrected $F t$ value for this nucleus. We also compare the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution with theoretical shell-model predictions. Finally, future opportunities at LISE3 are discussed.

Abstract

Total fission cross sections of 181Ta induced by protons at different relativistic energies have been measured at GSI Darmstadt using the inverse kinematic technique. These data contribute to solve inconsistencies in previously reported measurements, but also help to benchmark state-of-the-art reaction codes. The energy range covered with these measurements allowed us to investigate the onset and temperature dependence of dissipative and transient effects at small deformation. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Two experiments were performed at the Tandem accelerator of the Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering, IFIN-HH with the purpose to investigate the possibility to use alpha-induced reactions for the calculation of neutron inelastic cross sections based on the Bohr hypothesis of the compound nucleus. A first experiment compared the gamma production cross sections excited in the $^{25}$Mg($\alpha, n\gamma$ )$^{28}$Si and the $^{28}Si(n, n′\gamma)^{28}$Si reactions. A second measurement, supported by the ERINDA project, was dedicated to the measurement of $^{70}Zn(\alpha, n\gamma )^{73}$Ge cross sections with the purpose of inferring the neutron inelastic cross sections on $^{73}$Ge.

Abstract

A significant number of new measurements was undertaken by the ANDES “Measurements for advanced reactor systems” initiative. These new measurements include neutron inelastic scattering from 23 Na, Mo, Zr, and 238 U, neutron capture cross sections of 238 U, 241 Am, neutron induced fission cross sections of 240 Pu, 242 Pu, 241 Am, 243 Am and 245 Cm, and measurements that explore the limits of the surrogate technique. The latter study the feasibility of inferring neutron capture cross sections for Cm isotopes, the neutron-induced fission cross section of 238 Pu and fission yields and fission probabilities through full Z and A identification in inverse kinematics for isotopes of Pu, Am, Cm and Cf. Finally, four isotopes are studied which are important to improve predictions for delayed neutron precursors and decay heat by total absorption gamma-ray spectrometry ( 88 Br, 94 Rb, 95 Rb, 137 I). The measurements which are performed at state-of-the-art European facilities have the ambition to achieve the lowest possible uncertainty, and to come as close as is reasonably achievable to the target uncertainties established by sensitivity studies. An overview is presented of the activities and achievements, leaving detailed expositions to the various parties contributing to the conference.

Abstract

Several observables such us total fission cross sections, pre-saddle neutron and gamma emission or the measurement of the fission time using crystal blocking techniques show clear indications for a delay of fission at high excitation energies when compared to other de-excitation channels, namely particle evaporation . This delay is explained as the manifestation of transient effects produced by the coupling between intrinsic and collective degrees of freedom in fission. This coupling can be macroscopically understood as a dissipative process. Moreover, the investigation of proton induced fission on lead is relevant for the radiological characterization of spallation targets. In this work we will present measurements of total fission cross sections and charge distributions of the fission fragments produced in proton and deuteron on lead reactions at relativistic energies. The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics at GSI Darmstadt. Beams of lead ions were accelerated by the SIS18 synchrotron at 500 A MeV impinging then onto a liquid hydrogen/deuterium target. Projectile reaction residues, in particular fission fragments flying forward, were identified using a set of plastic scintillators and ionization chambers. Measured data were used to benchmark model calculations describing residual nuclei production in spallation reactions. In particular we used several model calculations to prove the sensitivity of the width of the charge distributions of the fission fragments to the temperature reached by the fissioning system at saddle. The deduced temperatures are clearly influenced by transient effects which cool down the fissioning nuclei from ground to saddle.

Abstract

International audience; Fission induced by lead projectiles impinging protons and deuterons at 500 A MeV has been investigated using inverse kinematics. Total fission cross sections and charge distributions of both fission fragments have been determined. The accuracy of the measured cross sections has solved some previous discrepancies. Partial fission cross sections and the widths of the charge distributions of the fission fragments, both investigated as a function of the sum of the charge of both fission fragments, clearly indicate the role of dynamical effects in high energy fission.

Abstract

Total cross sections for proton- and deuteron-induced-fission of ${}^{208}$Pb and ${}^{238}$U have been determined in the energy range between 500 MeV and 1 GeV. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics at GSI Darmstadt, facilitating the counting of the projectiles and the identification of the reaction products. High precision between 5$%$ and 7$%$ has been achieved by individually counting the beam particles and by registering both fission fragments in coincidence with high efficiency and full $Z$ resolution. Fission was clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. The results were found to deviate by up to 30$%$ from Prokofiev's systematics on total fission cross sections. There is good agreement with an elaborate experiment performed in direct kinematics.

Abstract

In the context of improvement of nuclear data bases for future nuclear reactor researches, we study (n,xn) reactions experimentally with the help of the (n,xn γ ) technique. The experiments are performed at the GELINA facility which delivers a pulsed, white neutron beam. Several measurement campaigns have been performed on 235 U, 232 Th, 182,183,184,186 W and 238 U isotopes. A compilation of all these experimental cross sections (mostly still preliminary) compared to theoretical predictions will be discussed.

Abstract

The design of generation IV nuclear reactors and the studies of new fuel cycles require knowledge of the cross sections of various nuclear reactions. Our research is focused on ($n,xn\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reactions occurring in these new reactors. The aim is to measure unknown cross sections and to reduce the uncertainty on present data for reactions and isotopes of interest for transmutation or advanced reactors. The present work studies the ${}^{235}$U($n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$) and ${}^{235}$U($n,2n\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reactions in the fast neutron energy domain (up to 20 MeV). The experiments were performed with the Geel electron linear accelerator GELINA, which delivers a pulsed white neutron beam. The time characteristics enable measuring neutron energies with the time-of-flight (TOF) technique. The neutron induced reactions [in this case inelastic scattering and ($n,2n$) reactions] are identified by on-line prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectroscopy with an experimental setup including four high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. A fission ionization chamber is used to monitor the incident neutron flux. The experimental setup and analysis methods are presented and the model calculations performed with the TALYS-1.2 code are discussed.

Abstract

Prompt-gamma spectroscopy and time-of-flight techniques were used to measure (n,xn gamma) cross-sections on several nuclei of interest for nuclear reactors. Experiments were performed at the GELINA facility which provides a pulsed white neutron beam of maximum energy about 20 MeV. Preliminary results concerning 238U will be presented.
