Purpose: To compare the peripapillary polar characteristics in eyes combining peripapillary staphyloma and gamma peripapillary atrophy according to whether peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation (PICC) was present or absent (combination-group). Patients and methods: This prospective non-interventional cross-sectional study included 667 eyes of 334 subjects. From the polar peripapillary regions to the opening of Bruch’s membrane, the following elements and their topographic relationships were analyzed using optical coherence tomography sections: configuration of the posterior curvature of the choroid, visibility of the subarachnoid space (SAS), and suprachoroidal detachment (SCD). Chi-squared and Fisher exact tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The protrusion of the posterior choroidal wall, with anterior elevation on either side, observed in both groups progressed and transformed into a wedge-shaped deformity on the side of gamma peripapillary atrophy. This wedge configuration was significantly more frequent in PICC-group than in combination-group (p = 0.004 and p < 0.001) for the upper and lower poles, respectively. SAS was more frequently observed in PICC-group than in combination-group (p = 0.002 and p < 0.001) for the upper and lower poles, respectively. SCD was detected exclusively in PICC-group (p < 0.001, both poles). The wedge-shaped configuration and the SCD were aligned antero-posteriorly with the SAS. Conclusion: We confirmed that PICC is an SCD. We observed its constant alignment with the SAS. We suggest that the tensile forces of the optic nerve sheaths during adduction promote the collapse of the scleral flange onto the SAS, leading to PICC. Le système agro-alimentaire du bassin de la Seine est aujourd’hui caractérisé par une extrême spécialisation en grandes cultures céréalières de sa partie centrale, l’élevage étant repoussé vers sa frange orientale où domine la polyculture-élevage, et celle occidentale dont les systèmes se rapprochent du modèle d’élevage intensif du Grand Ouest. Cette spécialisation s’inscrit dans le mouvement historique de «modernisation» de l’agriculture qui s’affirme au milieu du XXe siècle, et est accentué en ce début de XXIe siècle par les politiques publiques et privées qui visent à renforcer la concentration de population le long de l’axe Paris-Le Havre («Le Grand Paris») au détriment des zones amont du bassin, et à accroitre la place de la France comme exportatrice de céréales, tout en essayant de contenir les dommages environnementaux par des mesures d’agriculture raisonnée ou de précision. Parallèlement, la nécessité d’une transition écologique est de plus en plus affirmée et se traduit par un foisonnement d’initiatives citoyennes locales, souvent relayées par les pouvoirs publics régionaux, visant à relocaliser l’approvisionnement en repensant le régime alimentaire, à refermer les cycles de matière et à reconnecter la production agricole et la consommation urbaine, l’agriculture et l’élevage. En poussant jusqu’à l’extrême ces deux tendances antagonistes, on peut construire deux récits opposés de ce que pourrait être le bassin de la Seine à l’horizon 2040 : « Le futur radieux du Grand Paris et l’hyper-spécialisation des territoires agricoles » et «Un futur bio-autonome-demitarien, sobre et écologiquement vertueux». Il est possible que le conflit entre ces deux tendances irréconciliables aboutisse à un compromis sous la forme d’un partage du territoire, donnant lieu à un troisième récit : «L’Agriculture Duale». Dans le cadre du programme de recherche Seine-Aval 5, différentes stratégies de modélisation numérique sont mises en place pour aider à répondre aux questionnements scientifiques et sociétaux associés au fonctionnement physique, biologique, chimique et écologique de l'estuaire de la Seine (ex. projets RESET et HYMOSED). Les forçages météo-marins (vent, vague, marée) et hydrologique (débit) contrôlent le fonctionnement hydro-morpho-sédimentaire et biogéochimique de l'estuaire, modifiant ainsi les paramètres environnementaux de l’estuaire amont jusqu’à la baie de Seine (ex. nature des fonds, courant, turbidité, salinité, température, oxygène dissous, chlorophylle-a). La modélisation de ces paramètres, ainsi que leur évolution face à différents scénarios climatiques et/ou anthropiques, représentent une source de données essentielle à l’étude écosystémique de l’estuaire et de ses trajectoires futures. Au sein du programme Seine-Aval 5, l’outil de modélisation nourrit des projets portant sur le devenir des nutriments conditionnés par différentes stratégies de régulation hydro-agricole et leur impact sur la qualité de l’eau en estuaire, sur l’aide à la décision pour des projets de restauration écologique, ou encore sur l’étude des interactions physique/biologie à l’interface eau-sédiment. Enfin, les résultats de ces travaux de modélisation ont également pour objectif de participer au développement du SIG « Habitats Fonctionnels » porté par le GIPSA.

Ecological network analysis was applied in the Seine estuary ecosystem, northern France, integrating ecological data from the years 1996 to 2002. The Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach was used to model the trophic flows in 6 spatial compartments leading to 6 distinct EwE models: the navigation channel and the two channel flanks in the estuary proper, and 3 marine habitats in the eastern Seine Bay. Each model included 12 consumer groups, 2 primary producers, and one detritus group. Ecological network analysis was performed, including a set of indices, keystoneness, and trophic spectrum analysis to describe the contribution of the 6 habitats to the Seine estuary ecosystem functioning. Results showed that the two habitats with a functioning most related to a stressed state were the northern and central navigation channels, where building works and constant maritime traffic are considered major anthropogenic stressors. The strong top-down control highlighted in the other 4 habitats was not present in the central channel, showing instead (i) a change in keystone roles in the ecosystem towards sediment-based, lower trophic levels, and (ii) a higher system omnivory. The southern channel evidenced the highest system activity (total system throughput), the higher trophic specialisation (low system omnivory), and the lowest indication of stress (low cycling and relative redundancy). Marine habitats showed higher fish biomass proportions and higher transfer efficiencies per trophic levels than the estuarine habitats, with a transition area between the two that presented intermediate ecosystem structure. The modelling of separate habitats permitted disclosing each one's response to the different pressures, based on their a priori knowledge. Network indices, although non-monotonously, responded to these differences and seem a promising operational tool to define the ecological status of transitional water ecosystems.
