Studies of lake ice phenology have historically relied on limited in situ data. Relatively few observations exist for ice out and fewer still for ice in, both of which are necessary to determine the temporal extent of ice cover. Satellite data provide an opportunity to better document patterns of ice phenology across landscapes and relate them to the climatological drivers behind changing ice phenology. We developed a model, the Cumulative Sum Method (CSM), that uses daytime and nighttime surface temperature observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on board the Earth‐observing Aqua satellite to approximate ice in (the onset of ice cover) and ice out from training datasets of 13 and 58 Maine lakes, respectively, during the 2002/2003 through 2017/2018 ice seasons. Ice in was signaled by reaching a threshold of cumulative negative degrees following the first day of the season below 0°C. Ice out was signaled by reaching a threshold of cumulative positive degrees following the first day of the year above 0°C. The comparison of observed and remotely sensed ice‐in dates showed relative agreement with a correlation coefficient of 0.71 and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 9.8 days. Ice‐out approximations had a correlation coefficient of 0.67 and an MAE of 8.8 days. Lakes smaller in surface area and nearer the Atlantic coast had the greatest error in approximation. Application of the CSM to 20 additional lakes in Maine produced a comparable ice‐out MAE of 8.9 days. Ice‐out model performance was weaker for the warmest years; there was a larger MAE of 12.0 days when the model was applied to the years 2019–2023 for the original 58 lakes. The development of this model, which utilizes daily satellite data, demonstrates the promise of remote sensing for quantifying ice phenology over short, temporal scales, and wider geographic regions than can be observed in situ, and allows exploration of the influence of surface temperature patterns on the process and timing of ice in and ice out. Objective Examine a model that encourages health at every size as opposed to weight loss. The health at every size concept supports homeostatic regulation and eating intuitively (ie, in response to internal cues of hunger, satiety, and appetite). Design Six-month, randomized clinical trial; 2-year follow-up. Subjects White, obese, female chronic dieters, aged 30 to 45 years (N = 78). Setting Free-living, general community. Interventions Six months of weekly group intervention (health at every size program or diet program), followed by 6 months of monthly aftercare group support. Main outcome measures Anthropometry (weight, body mass index), metabolic fitness (blood pressure, blood lipids), energy expenditure, eating behavior (restraint, eating disorder pathology), and psychology (self-esteem, depression, body image). Attrition, attendance, and participant evaluations of treatment helpfulness were also monitored. Statistical analysis performed Analysis of variance. Results Cognitive restraint decreased in the health at every size group and increased in the diet group, indicating that both groups implemented their programs. Attrition (6 months) was high in the diet group (41%), compared with 8% in the health at every size group. Fifty percent of both groups returned for 2-year evaluation. Health at every size group members maintained weight, improved in all outcome variables, and sustained improvements. Diet group participants lost weight and showed initial improvement in many variables at 1 year; weight was regained and little improvement was sustained. Conclusions The health at every size approach enabled participants to maintain long-term behavior change; the diet approach did not. Encouraging size acceptance, reduction in dieting behavior, and heightened awareness and response to body signals resulted in improved health risk indicators for obese women. Temporal Secchi depth trends are used in lake assessment to evaluate lake condition and possible shifts in trophic state. For accurate lake assessments, it is important to differentiate regional trends from lake‐specific trends, but this can be confounded by interacting factors. We present a divergent trend analysis which uses temporal patterns of Secchi depth water clarity from 1999 to 2018 for five different types of reference lakes from minimally disturbed watersheds to create dynamic baselines against which we evaluate Secchi depth trends from nonreference lakes in Maine, USA. We used mixed‐effect generalized additive models to generate smoothed curves of the expected baseline Secchi depth for each reference lake type to account for the nonlinear dynamics of lake condition through time. The majority of nonreference lakes (74%) showed no difference between measured trend (actual Secchi depth data) and divergent trend (residual Secchi depth from baseline trends). The most common difference in lakes with inconsistent trend test results showed stability in measured trends but apparent declining trends in divergent Secchi depth clarity. We used a Dynamic Factor Analysis (DFA) model to help interpret the variation and shifts observed in baseline reference lake trends. The best DFA model identified two common trends in water clarity among lake types and precipitation during the primary stratification season as the most informative covariable. Because precipitation amount and intensity are expected to increase according to predictive climate models for the Northeast US, our results suggest that baseline lake clarity in Maine will decrease with climate change. Abstract Current guidelines recommend that "overweight" and "obese" individuals lose weight through engaging in lifestyle modification involving diet, exercise and other behavior change. This approach reliably induces short term weight loss, but the majority of individuals are unable to maintain weight loss over the long term and do not achieve the putative benefits of improved morbidity and mortality. Concern has arisen that this weight focus is not only ineffective at producing thinner, healthier bodies, but may also have unintended consequences, contributing to food and body preoccupation, repeated cycles of weight loss and regain, distraction from other personal health goals and wider health determinants, reduced self-esteem, eating disorders, other health decrement, and weight stigmatization and discrimination. This concern has drawn increased attention to the ethical implications of recommending treatment that may be ineffective or damaging. A growing trans-disciplinary movement called Health at Every Size (HAES) challenges the value of promoting weight loss and dieting behavior and argues for a shift in focus to weight-neutral outcomes. Randomized controlled clinical trials indicate that a HAES approach is associated with statistically and clinically relevant improvements in physiological measures (e.g., blood pressure, blood lipids), health behaviors (e.g., eating and activity habits, dietary quality), and psychosocial outcomes (such as self-esteem and body image), and that HAES achieves these health outcomes more successfully than weight loss treatment and without the contraindications associated with a weight focus. This paper evaluates the evidence and rationale that justifies shifting the health care paradigm from a conventional weight focus to HAES.

Chemical, biological, and trophic status of temperate lakes can be strongly influenced by the presence of late-glacial marine sediments. Lake Reserv Manage. 36:14–30. Lake Auburn, Maine, is a water supply for 60,000 people. Unusual silt/clay sediment, >4 m thick, occurs 15 cm below gyttja in deep water cores. We characterized cores taken in 2015 and 2016 (57 and 425 cm long, respectively), from 35 m. We determined 137Cs, 210Pb, and 206P/204Pb ratios to establish chronology for the cores and to link them stratigraphically. At least 1.1 m of sediment has accumulated since European settlement due to watershed erosion from land clearance and disturbance from about 1750 onward. The increased lake level from dams established in 1851 and the 1950–1960s has caused shoreline erosion. Extraction of sediment with HCl, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses confirmed the presence of apatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) for at least the upper 3.5 m of sediment. The apatite is soluble because of the circumneutral pH and relatively low Ca2+ concentrations. This modern sediment is derived from postglacial marine silt/clay sediment and represents a rarely considered internal source of P that predisposes the lake's water column to higher total P, rendering it more susceptible to episodic eutrophication from stresses including higher temperatures, more frequent high-intensity weather phenomena, and longer ice-free periods with stronger and longer stratification. This previously unrecognized source of P must be considered in water quality management, including chemical mitigation such as aluminum addition, lake level manipulation, and watershed erosion control. Similar situations likely exist in other coastal lakes in postglacial terrain that was inundated during deglaciation, and in inland lakes receiving sediment directly during deglaciation. The article presents a reprint of the article "Intuitive Eating: Enjoy Your Food, Respect Your Body" which appeared in the November/December 2010 issue of the journal "Diabetes Self-Management." Topics discussed include the need for diabetics to learn the ability of the food to nourish them in managing their disease, the challenges provided by attaining and maintaining weight loss on type 2 diabetes patients, and the Health at Every Size (HAES) approach which helps manage diabetes.
