Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. 9. Growth studies of an autochthonous drinking water microorganism : Aquabacterium commune

Abstract

Results from the optimisation of the DPASV technique showed that a drop size of 4 appeared to give the best overall performance in terms of precision in multi-elemental (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu) trace analysis. A deposition time of 60 s was sufficient to accurately determine the concentration of Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu between 1-200 ppb. It is suggested to use ultrapure 0.1M KNO3 instead of 3M KCI as electrolyte in the reference electrode to minimise sample contamination. 1/10 KM samples for multi-elemental analysis by ICP-MS should be diluted by a factor of 10 to ensure that the total dissolved solids concentration remains well below 0.2 % (w/v). Greater dilution factors may improve the accuracy of Na, Mg and K measurements but may result in a loss of elements present at low ppb concentrations. From studies on 1/1 KM it is concluded that the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and subsequent formation of Fe(III)PO4 Fe(III) OOH and Fe2O3 can be considered the dominant precipitation reactions in autoclaved and non-autoclaved 1/1 KM. It was suggested that filter-sterilised FeSO4 should be added separately to the autoclaved, cooled medium in order to minimise the premature formation of Fe3+ precipitates as well as the oxidation of Fe2+ under oxic conditions. ICP-MS and DPASV results indicated that Zn concentration in 1/10 KM increases after autoclaving. Cadmium, Pb and Cu concentrations were found to be less than 0.1 ppb (near LoD). ICP-MS data have also shown that common borosilicate glass components such as B, Ba, Na, A1 and Zn are present at elevated levels. In order to avoid sample contamination in metal uptake studies it is recommended to use PP or Teflon. DPASV experiments with EDTA in a 3M buffer showed that 0.538 μM EDTA complexed 35 % less Pb2+ than theoretically possible. It is likely that heavy metal contaminants were present in the 3M buffer using up the remaining binding sites of the EDTA. The experiment in general demonstrated that DPASV is a suitable technique to study metal complexation and monitor the labile (bioavailable) metal fraction in aqueous solutions. The addition of 4 μM and 10 μM EDTA to non-autoclaved 1/10 KM resulted in a residual labile Zn2+ ion concentration of 0.8 and 0.3 nM, respectively. Labile Cd2+ and Pb2+ ion concentrations after EDTA addition were below the LoD. After autoclaving labile metal ions could not be detected, proving that EDTA retained its metal complexing capability. Based on ICP-MS and Visual MINTEQ results it is concluded that 10 μM EDTA was sufficient to complex Ca and Fe and prevent both from precipitating before and after autoclaving. However, 4 μM EDTA may be sufficient if FeSO4 is added to 1/10 KM after autoclaving.

15. Expectations in Development Economics

Abstract

In this chapter, I review the elicitation and use of subjective expectations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). I begin by describing several elicitation methods used in this context, together with the key relevant methodological issues, typical patterns of answers, and further considerations for those who wish to collect such data. I then describe existing applications, many of which seek to evaluate how expectations influence behavior in various domains, including health, education, the labor market, agricultural production, and migration. I further describe recent research involving randomized information interventions coupled with the elicitation of expectations, aimed at precisely identifying the effect of information on beliefs. The existing evidence suggests it is feasible and valuable to elicit expectations from survey respondents in LMICs.

Abstract

As the European labour markets are characterised by an increasing share of migrants, it is vital to identify recent differences in skills supplied by migrant workers compared to natives. This paper analyses the skill supply in European labour markets by workers’ origin, providing evidence on the distribution of migrants across business sectors, occupations, and regions, as well as education level and age groups. These analyses over the period 2014 to 2021 and 19EU countries reveal important differences between migrant and native workers. Using the current allocation of migrant and native workers across occupations, we identify the occupations that are under- or over-supplied in France and Germany over the period 2019 to 2021. We assess the role of migrants from European countries and from out of Europe in addressing the labour shortage faced by these two Western European labour markets. Using Online Job Vacancy data, we identify the composition and similarity of skill required of the most under-supplied occupations in France and Germany in 2021. We finally show the heterogeneity and evolution of skill demand within these occupations.

Abstract

Pre-operative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by surgical resection is still the standard treatment for locally advanced low rectal cancer. Nowadays new strategies are emerging to treat patients with a complete response to pre-operative treatment, rendering the optimal management still controversial and under debate. The primary aim of this study was to obtain a snapshot of tumor regression grade (TRG) distribution after standard CRT. Second, we aimed to identify a correlation between clinical tumor stage (cT) and TRG, and to define the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the restaging setting. Between January 2017 and June 2019, a cross sectional multicentric study was performed in 22 referral centers of colon-rectal surgery including all patients with cT3-4Nx/cTxN1-2 rectal cancer who underwent pre-operative CRT. Shapiro–Wilk test was used for continuous data. Categorical variables were compared with Chi-squared test or Fisher’s exact test, where appropriate. Accuracy of restaging MRI in the identification of pathologic complete response (pCR) was determined evaluating the correspondence with the histopathological examination of surgical specimens.In the present study, 689 patients were enrolled. Complete tumor regression rate was 16.9%. The “watch and wait” strategy was applied in 4.3% of TRG4 patients. A clinical correlation between more advanced tumors and moderate to absent tumor regression was found (p = 0.03). Post-neoadjuvant MRI had low sensibility (55%) and high specificity (83%) with accuracy of 82.8% in identifying TRG4 and pCR.Our data provided a contemporary description of the effects of pre-operative CRT on a large pool of locally advanced low rectal cancer patients treated in different colon-rectal surgical centers.

Abstract

Over the last 20 years, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has progressively become a therapeutic option for peritoneal carcinomatosis thanks to its favourable oncologic results. The aim of this study is to analyse the overall survival and recurrence-free survival, after complete CRS and closed abdomen technique HIPEC for peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer. This retrospective study collected the data from all patients who underwent a CRS with HIPEC for colorectal cancer at "Cliniques universitaires Saint Luc" from October 2007 to December 2020. Ninety-nine patients were included. The median follow-up was 34 months. Post-operative mortality and Clavien-Dindo grade III/IV morbidity rates were 2.0% and 28.3%. The overall 2-year and 5-year survival rates were 80.1% and 54.4%. Using the multivariate analysis, age at surgery, liver metastases and PCI score >13 showed a statistically significant negative impact on overall survival. The 2-year and 5-year recurrence-free survival rates were 33.9% and 22%. Using the multivariate analysis, it was found that liver metastases, the extent of carcinomatosis with PCI>7 have a statistically significant negative impact on recurrence-free survival. Despite a high recurrence rate, CRS followed by HIPEC to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal origin offer encouraging oncologic results with a satisfying survival rate. When PCI>13, CRS and HIPEC does not seem to offer any survival benefit and to efficiently limit recurrence, our data are in favor of a maximum PCI of 7.
