Abstract

Projection-based nonlinear model order reduction methods can be used to reduce simulation times for the solution of many PDE-constrained problems. It has been observed in literature that such nonlinear reduced-order models (ROMs) based on Galerkin projection sometimes exhibit much larger stable time step sizes than their unreduced counterparts. This work provides a detailed theoretical analysis of this phenomenon for structural mechanics. We first show that many desirable system matrix properties are preserved by the Galerkin projection. Next, we prove that the eigenvalues of the linearized Galerkin reduced-order system separate the eigenvalues of the linearized original system. Assuming non-negative Rayleigh damping and a time integration using the popular central difference method, we further prove that the theoretical linear stability time step of the ROM is in fact always larger than or equal to the critical time step of its corresponding full-order model. We also give mathematical expressions for computing the stable time step size. Finally, we show that under certain conditions this increase in the stability time step even extends to some hyper-reduction methods. The findings can be used to compute numerical stability time step sizes for the integration of nonlinear ROMs in structural mechanics, and to speed up simulations by permitting the use of larger time steps.

Abstract

Recurrent gene fusions are common in salivary gland tumors including benign tumors, such as pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and myoepithelioma (ME). In cases where chromosomal rearrangement is identified in the pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1)gene, different gene partners are found. Oncocytic metaplasia, characterized by oncocytes with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei, is a well-known phenomenon in salivary gland neoplasms. However, the pure oncocytic variant of PA/ME showed PLAG1gene rearrangements involving various gene partners at the molecular level, without any recurrent fusion being found. Our study includes 20 cases of PA/ME, with 11 females and 9 males. The age of patients ranged from 37 to 96 years, with a median age of 62.8 years. Most tumors originate from the parotid gland. The median size of the tumor was 26.5 mm (range: 13 to 60 mm). Among the 20 cases, 14 were a pure oncocytic variant of PA/ME, whereas 6 cases showed focal oncocytic or oncocytic-like aspects. Molecular studies on 20 cases of PA/ME were conducted. A novel recurrent ZBTB47-AS1::PLAG1fusion was identified in 6 of 12 cases with pure oncocytic metaplasia, whereas the other cases had PLAG1gene fusion with different gene partners. The transcriptomic analysis of the cases harboring ZBTB47-AS1::PLAG1fusion demonstrated that these tumors have a distinct molecular profile from conventional PA/ME. This study reveals a unique subset in the oncocytic PA/ME spectrum characterized by pure oncocytic morphology with larger oncocytic cells and recurrent ZBTB47-AS1::PLAG1fusion. It also highlights the transcriptomic distinctness of salivary gland adenomas with pure oncocytic metaplasia in the spectrum of salivary gland neoplasms. Further studies are needed to better understand the oncocytic variant of PA/ME and to determine the true nature of oncocytic cells in PA/ME.

Using a patient guided, Internet-based survivorship care plan program, we obtained and looked at patterns of patient-reported outcomes data from survivors seeking information after treatment for head and neck cancer. Methods: The Internet-based OncoLife and LIVESTRONG Care Plan programs were employed, which design unique survivorship care plans based on patient-reported data. Care plans created for survivors of head and neck cancer were used in this evaluation. Demographics, treatment modality, and toxicity were included in this evaluation. Toxicity was further analyzed, grouped into system-based subsets. Results: A total of 602 care plans were created from self-identified head and neck cancer survivors, from which patient-reported outcome data were attained. A majority of patients were Caucasian (96.2%) with median age at diagnosis of 55 years, living in suburban locations (39.9%), with ~50% receiving care within 20 miles of their residence. There was an equal distribution of education levels from high school only to graduate school. The majority of patients received care through cancer centers (96.7%), with a split between academic and non-academic centers. Ninety-three percent of patients had radiation therapy as part of their treatment modality, with 70.3% having chemotherapy and 60.1% having surgery. The most common system toxicities affected the oropharynx, followed by epithelium (skin/hair/nail), and then general global health. Specifically, the most common side effects were difficulty swallowing (61.5%) and changes in skin color/texture (49.7%). One third of patients experienced hearing/tinnitus/vertigo, xerostomia, loss of tissue flexibility, or fatigue. Conclusion: The current work demonstrates the ability to obtain patient-reported outcomes of head and neck cancer survivors through an Internet-based survivorship care plan program. For this group dysphagia and dermatitis were the most commonly reported toxicities, as was expected; however, global effects of therapy, such as fatigue, were also significant and should be addressed in future survivorship planning. Abstract

Oncology patients and their families are at risk for having experienced trauma. Trauma-informed care (TIC) provides a framework for providers to recognize the experience of trauma and its impact on a person's participation in cancer treatment. Understanding patients' experiences can support provision of patient-centered, collaborative care that also may improve patient outcomes and adherence. A TIC training program was designed by an interdisciplinary team based on TIC principles, with learning goals including understanding trauma, recognizing signs, symptoms and common trauma responses, and implementing sensitive practice techniques. Interactive group trainings were tailored based on participant roles. A pre- and post-training validated assessment (Trauma-Informed Care Provider Survey, V 2.0 , Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) was utilized to assess knowledge, opinions and practices (barriers and interventions) among participants. Survey responses were analyzed using paired t-Tests on statistical software. Eleven 60–90-minute trainings occurred from 8/2023-3/2024, both in-person and virtually, and included 141 radiation oncology (RO) staff in a single department (51 radiation therapists, 26 physicians, 4 social workers, 33 patient service representatives, 15 advanced practice providers, 7 other). Of these, 101 completed both pre- and post-test surveys. Paired sample participants were 85% female; 72% were aged 20-40y, 24% 40 – 60y, and 4% > 60y; 33% had less than 5y experience, 47% 5-15y, 14% 15-25y, and 7% > 25y of experience. Paired Samples Statistics *Reverse scored Interactive evidence-based training can effectively increase knowledge, competence and opinions about TIC in a sample of RO staff. Training decreased barriers to providing TIC and increased knowledge of TIC interventions. Standardized TIC training of all RO staff should be considered. Abstract

State-of-the-art lung support systems are limited to short time application because of a lack of long term hemocompatibility and protein absorption on the membrane surfaces. In a highly interdisciplinary project at RWTH Aachen University a biohybrid lung assist system with endothelialised gas exchange flat membranes is developed to improve long term compatibility of oxygenators. To increase the gas exchange performance of flat membranes hollows are imprinted in the membrane surfaces. This approach is based on the research of B. J. Bell-house et al. [1], who discovered this effect, now known as Bellhouse-effect, around 1960. In this paper a processes to manufacture membrane assemblies for oxygenation with imprinted hollows on the flat membrane surfaces is reviewed.

34. Digital Socrates: A System for Disseminating and Evaluating Best Practices in Education

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine existing learning innovation systems and propose a systematic methodology of delivering educational innovations in the right amount, in the right place and at the right time. Design/methodology/approach: Higher education is not effectively incorporating new discoveries in cognitive science and human learning into effective teaching strategies. In this paper, the authors explore the various impediments to change. To partially overcome these barriers, Drexel University, in collaboration with Untra Academic Management Solutions, LLC, has embarked on the development of a knowledge management system to assist instructors in obtaining, implementing, evaluating and disseminating new educational innovations. The system as envisioned would be capable of adapting to various educational environments and evolving with changes in curricula, faculty expectations, learning outcomes and student characteristics. Findings: The SocraticNet as a learning environment is stimulated, based on Socratic inquiry among teachers and learners. It is an interactive social network system utilising Web 2.0-based emerging technologies fostering communication and sharing among faculty, students and others (e.g. librarians) engaged in a particular course or other educational experience. Students learn by sharing what they know, by asking questions, judging and evaluating the retrieved information, and using this information efficiently in completing their assignments or research papers. This approach results in multidimensional information flow: instructor to instructor, instructor to student, student to instructor, student to student: which adds a new richness to the interactions between faculty and students providing the framework for a true learning community. Research limitations/implications: The present work has been conducted at one institution. This can be extended to include more institutions and tried with different disciplines. There are implications for changes in relation to teaching and learning approached adopted in higher education and also for development of technology tailored to address issues emanating from the scenario. Practical implications: The research work presented has the potential to stimulate debate to further develop and refine thinking on the role and use of technology directed at improving teaching and learning in higher education. Originality/value: This paper examines learning and teaching styles in higher education taking cognizance of conditions and factors impeding new innovations in practice. Details discussions are presented and unique suggestions are made.

Abstract

This contribution presents an overview of the research and development activities within the research group for Space Transportation, which is part of the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden. The research focuses mainly on chemical propulsion systems, including the cutting edge academic investigations on additively manufactured aerospike engines and their thrust-vector control for various applications, such as retro-propulsion and in-space thrusters. Two of the major challenges regarding aerospike engines are the higher thermal load and the increased design complexity when compared to a bell nozzle engine, both of which might be resolved using additive manufacturing (AM). Approaches using AM with a nickel superalloy are investigated at Technische Universität Dresden. One is conducted in the framework of the ASPIRER project, in which a kerosene-hydrogen peroxide 6 kN aerospike engine is developed. Another project, called CFDµSAT, is dedicated to the development of a 500N ethanol-liquid oxygen engine. Furthermore, aerodynamic thrust vector control on linear and annular aerospike nozzles is investigated. Within the frame of the ACTiVE research project, numerical analyses, shallow water as well as cold-gas experiments were conducted and a cold-gas test bench has been set up to study this kind of fluidic thrust vector control in detail. Within the joint research project MACARONIS, we transfer the advantageous characteristics of additively manufactured ceramic components into a cold-gas aerospike thruster to be developed, manufactured and tested with the aim of an in-orbit demonstration. In the frame of the Innovative Training Network (ITN) ASCenSIon, the utilisation of aerospikes and other advanced nozzle concepts for retropropulsion applications is being investigated. Furthermore, the ignition of aerospikes with annular combustion chambers is being investigated. The resarch is not limited to aerospike engines. Further research is being executed on health monitioring systems for resubable rockets, the in-situ utilisiation of extraterrestrial ressources for the production of propellants and mission concepts for in-orbit servicing. Also an experimental rocket is being developed in the frame of the education project SR Dorado. This contribution strives to give a comprehensive overview of the aforementioned activities. The particular focus lies on the advancements of the state of research so far and their implications on further research activities.
