The chameleon screening mechanism has been constrained many a time using dynamic and kinematic galaxy cluster observables. Current constraints are, however, insensitive to different mass components within galaxy clusters and have been mainly focused on a single mass density profile, the Navarro-Frenk-While mass density model. In this work, we extend the study of the Chameleon screening mechanism in galaxy clusters by considering a series of mass density models, namely: generalized-Navarro-Frenk-While, b-Navarro-Frenk-While, Burket, Isothermal and Einasto. The coupling strength ($\beta$) and asymptotic value of the chameleon field ($\phi_\infty$) are constrained by using kinematics analyses of simulated galaxy clusters, generated both assuming General Relativity and a strong chameleon scenario. By implementing a Bayesian analysis we comprehensively show that the biases introduced due to an incorrect assumption of the mass model are minimal. We present ForSE+, a Python package that produces non-Gaussian diffuse Galactic thermal dust emission maps at arcminute angular scales and that has the capacity to generate random realizations of small scales. This represents an extension of the ForSE (Foreground Scale Extender) package, which was recently proposed to simulate non-Gaussian small scales of thermal dust emission using generative adversarial networks (GANs). With the input of the large-scale polarization maps from observations, ForSE+ has been trained to produce realistic polarized small scales at 3' following the statistical properties, mainly the non-Gaussianity, of observed intensity small scales, which are evaluated through Minkowski functionals. Furthermore, by adding different realizations of random components to the large-scale foregrounds, we show that ForSE+ is able to generate small scales in a stochastic way. In both cases, the output small scales have a similar level of non-Gaussianity compared with real observations and correct amplitude scaling as a power law. These realistic new maps will be useful, in the future, to understand the impact of non-Gaussian foregrounds on the measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal, particularly on the lensing reconstruction, de-lensing, and the detection of cosmological gravitational waves in CMB polarization B-modes., Comment: Published in A&A. In this paper we present the European Low Frequency Survey (ELFS), a project that will enable foregrounds-free measurements of the primordial $B$-mode polarization and a detection of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, to a level $\sigma(r) = 0.001$ by measuring the Galactic and extra-galactic emissions in the 5--120\,GHz frequency window. Indeed, the main difficulty in measuring the B-mode polarization comes from the fact that many other processes in the Universe also emit polarized microwaves, which obscure the faint Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) signal. The first stage of this project is being carried out in synergy with the Simons Array (SA) collaboration, installing a 5.5--11\,GHz (X-band) coherent receiver at the focus of one of the three 3.5\,m SA telescopes in Atacama, Chile, followed by the installation of the QUIJOTE-MFI2 in the 10--20 GHz range. We designate this initial iteration of the ELFS program as ELFS-SA. The receivers are equipped with a fully digital back-end that will provide a frequency resolution of 1\,MHz across the band, allowing us to clean the scientific signal from unwanted radio frequency interference, particularly from low-Earth orbit satellite mega constellations. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment that includes small-aperture telescopes (SATs) observing from an altitude of 5,200 m in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The SO SATs will cover six spectral bands between 27 and 280 GHz to search for primordial B-modes to a sensitivity of $\sigma(r)=0.002$, with quantified systematic errors well below this value. Each SAT is a self-contained cryogenic telescope with a 35$^\circ$ field of view, 42 cm diameter optical aperture, 40 K half-wave plate, 1 K refractive optics, and $<0.1$ K focal plane that holds $>12,000$ TES detectors. We describe the nominal design of the SATs and present details about the integration and testing for one operating at 93 and 145 GHz.

The Simons Observatory (SO), due to start full science operations in early 2025, aims to set tight constraints on inflationary physics by inferring the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ from measurements of CMB polarization $B$-modes. Its nominal design targets a precision $\sigma(r=0) \leq 0.003$ without delensing. Achieving this goal and further reducing uncertainties requires the mitigation of other sources of large-scale $B$-modes such as Galactic foregrounds and weak gravitational lensing. We present an analysis pipeline aiming to estimate $r$ by including delensing within a cross-spectral likelihood, and demonstrate it on SO-like simulations. Lensing $B$-modes are synthesised using internal CMB lensing reconstructions as well as Planck-like CIB maps and LSST-like galaxy density maps. This $B$-mode template is then introduced into SO's power-spectrum-based foreground-cleaning algorithm by extending the likelihood function to include all auto- and cross-spectra between the lensing template and the SAT $B$-modes. Within this framework, we demonstrate the equivalence of map-based and cross-spectral delensing and use it to motivate an optimized pixel-weighting scheme for power spectrum estimation. We start by validating our pipeline in the simplistic case of uniform foreground spectral energy distributions (SEDs). In the absence of primordial $B$-modes, $\sigma(r)$ decreases by 37% as a result of delensing. Tensor modes at the level of $r=0.01$ are successfully detected by our pipeline. Even with more realistic foreground models including spatial variations in the dust and synchrotron spectral properties, we obtain unbiased estimates of $r$ by employing the moment-expansion method. In this case, delensing-related improvements range between 27% and 31%. These results constitute the first realistic assessment of the delensing performance at SO's nominal sensitivity level. The Crab Nebula, also known as Tau A, is a polarized astronomical source at millimeter wavelengths. It has been used as a stable light source for polarization angle calibration in millimeter-wave astronomy. However, it is known that its intensity and polarization vary as a function of time at a variety of wavelengths. Thus, it is of interest to verify the stability of the millimeter-wave polarization. If detected, polarization variability may be used to better understand the dynamics of Tau A, and for understanding the validity of Tau~A as a calibrator. One intriguing application of such observation is to use it for the search of axion-light particles (ALPs). Ultralight ALPs couple to photons through a Chern-Simons term, and induce a temporal oscillation in the polarization angle of linearly polarized sources. After assessing a number of systematic errors and testing for internal consistency, we evaluate the variability of the polarization angle of the Crab Nebula using 2015 and 2016 observations with the 150 GHz POLARBEAR instrument. We place a median 95% upper bound of polarization oscillation amplitude $A < 0.065^\circ$ over the oscillation frequencies from $0.75~\mathrm{year}^{-1}$ to $0.66~\mathrm{hour}^{-1}$. Assuming that no sources other than ALP are causing Tau A's polarization angle variation, that the ALP constitutes all the dark matter, and that the ALP field is a stochastic Gaussian field, this bound translates into a median 95% upper bound of ALP-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma} < 2.16\times10^{-12}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}\times(m_a/10^{-21} \mathrm{eV})$ in the mass range from $9.9\times10^{-23} \mathrm{eV}$ to $7.7\times10^{-19} \mathrm{eV}$. We propose and perform a joint analysis of the two different mass estimates of galaxy clusters, namely the hydrostatic and caustic techniques. Firstly, we show comprehensively that the mass bias between these two techniques can be possibly alleviated when cluster-specific assumptions constrained using the hydrostatic technique are utilized within the caustic technique. While at face value this demotes the caustic technique from a completely independent method, this allows one to further tighten the constraints on the cluster mass and subsequently, allow us to test modifications to gravity. Implementing the aforementioned formalism for two well-observed massive galaxy clusters, A2029 and A2142, we highlight the proof of concept. In the current implementation, we use this method to constrain the Chameleon screening and Vainshtein screening. The stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) produced by merging neutron stars exhibits a peak in the kHz band. In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework to exploit this distinctive feature through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis using a simulated dataset of SGWB measurements within this frequency range. The aim is to use the SGWB peak as an observable to constrain a set of astrophysical and cosmological parameters that accurately describe the sources of the SGWB. We examine how variations in these parameters impact the morphology of the SGWB and investigate the necessary sensitivity to effectively constrain them. Given our priors on astrophysical and cosmological parameters, and assuming a power-law integrated sensitivity curve of the order of $10^{-11}$ between 1 kHz and 5 kHz, we show that the values of the chirp mass and common envelope efficiency of the binary systems are retrieved with percent accuracy. Furthermore, the method allows for the reconstruction of the cosmological expansion history populated by these binaries, encompassing the Hubble constant, matter abundance, and the effective equation of state of dark energy., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

[abridged] We propose a model of the Universe (dubbed $\eta$CDM) featuring a stochastic evolution of the cosmological quantities, that is meant to render small deviations from homogeneity/isotropy on scales of $30-50\, h^{-1}$ Mpc at late cosmic times, associated to the emergence of the cosmic web. Specifically, we prescribe that the behavior of the matter/radiation energy densities in different patches of the Universe with such a size can be effectively described by a stochastic version of the mass-energy evolution equation. The latter includes an appropriate noise term that statistically accounts for local fluctuations due to inhomogeneities, anisotropic stresses and matter flows. The evolution of the different patches as a function of cosmic time is rendered via the diverse realizations of the noise term; meanwhile, at any given cosmic time, sampling the ensemble of patches will originate a nontrivial spatial distribution of the cosmological quantities. The overall behavior of the Universe will be obtained by averaging over the patch ensemble. We assume a physically reasonable parameterization of the noise term, gauging it against a wealth of cosmological datasets. We find that, with respect to standard $\Lambda$CDM, the ensemble-averaged cosmic dynamics in the $\eta$CDM model is substantially altered in three main respects: (i) an accelerated expansion is enforced at late cosmic times without the need for any additional exotic component (e.g., dark energy); (ii) the spatial curvature can stay small even in a low-density Universe; (iii) matter can acquire an effective negative pressure at late times. We provide predictions for the variance of the cosmological quantities among different patches of the Universe at late cosmic times. Cosmic voids are a powerful probe of cosmology and are one of the core observables of upcoming galaxy surveys. The cross-correlations between voids and other large-scale structure tracers such as galaxy clustering and galaxy lensing have been shown to be very sensitive probes of cosmology and among the most promising to probe the nature of gravity and the neutrino mass. However, recent measurements of the void imprint on the lensed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) have been shown to be in tension with expectations based on LCDM simulations, hinting to a possibility of non-standard cosmological signatures due to massive neutrinos. In this work we use the DEMNUni cosmological simulations with massive neutrino cosmologies to study the neutrino impact on voids selected in photometric surveys, e.g. via Luminous Red Galaxies, as well as on the void- CMB lensing cross-correlation. We show how the void properties observed in this way (size function, profiles) are affected by the presence of massive neutrinos compared to the neutrino massless case, and show how these can vary as a function of the selection method of the void sample. We comment on the possibility for massive neutrinos to be the source of the aforementioned tension. Finally, we identify the most promising setup to detect signatures of massive neutrinos in the voids-CMB lensing cross-correlation and define a new quantity useful to distinguish among different neutrino masses by comparing future observations against predictions from simulations including massive neutrinos., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures

Very light pseudoscalar fields, often referred to as axions, are compelling dark matter candidates and can potentially be detected through their coupling to the electromagnetic field. Recently a novel detection technique using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) was proposed, which relies on the fact that the axion field oscillates at a frequency equal to its mass in appropriate units, leading to a time-dependent birefringence. For appropriate oscillation periods this allows the axion field at the telescope to be detected via the induced sinusoidal oscillation of the CMB linear polarization. We search for this effect in two years of POLARBEAR data. We do not detect a signal, and place a median $95 \%$ upper limit of $0.65 ^\circ$ on the sinusoid amplitude for oscillation frequencies between $0.02\,\text{days}^{-1}$ and $0.45\,\text{days}^{-1}$, which corresponds to axion masses between $9.6 \times 10^{-22} \, \text{eV}$ and $2.2\times 10^{-20} \,\text{eV}$. Under the assumptions that 1) the axion constitutes all the dark matter and 2) the axion field amplitude is a Rayleigh-distributed stochastic variable, this translates to a limit on the axion-photon coupling $g_{\phi \gamma} < 2.4 \times 10^{-11} \,\text{GeV}^{-1} \times ({m_\phi}/{10^{-21} \, \text{eV}})$., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We constrain the Chameleon \textit{screening} mechanism in galaxy clusters, essentially obtaining limits on the coupling strength $\beta$ and the asymptotic value of the field $\phi_{\infty}$. For this purpose, we utilized a collection of the 9 relaxed galaxy clusters within the X-COP compilation in the redshift range of $z \le 0.1$. We implement the formalism assuming an NFW mass profile for the dark matter density and study the degeneracy present between the mass $\M$ and the chameleon coupling with a high degree of improvement in the constraints for excluded parameter space. We recast our constrain to an upper limit on the scalaron field in \fofr sub-class of models of $|f_{R0}|\le 9.2\times 10^{-6}$, using all the nine clusters and $|f_{R0}|\le 1.2\times 10^{-5}$ using only 5 clusters with WL priors taken into account, at a $95\%$ confidence level. Many recent works have shown that the angular resolution of ground-based detectors is too poor to characterize the anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB). For this reason, we asked ourselves if a constellation of space-based instruments could be more suitable. We consider the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a constellation of multiple LISA-like clusters, and the Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO). Specifically, we test whether these detector constellations can probe the anisotropies of the SGWB. For this scope, we considered the SGWB produced by two astrophysical sources: merging compact binaries and a recently proposed scenario for massive black-hole seed formation through multiple mergers of stellar remnants. We find that measuring the angular power spectrum of the SGWB anisotropies is almost unattainable. However, it turns out that it could be possible to probe the SGWB anisotropies through cross-correlation with the CMB fluctuations. In particular, we find that a constellation of two LISA-like detectors and CMB-S4 can marginally constrain the cross-correlation between the CMB lensing convergence and the SGWB produced by the black hole seed formation process. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) primordial B-modes signal is predicted to be much lower than the polarized Galactic emission (foregrounds) in any region of the sky pointing to the need for sophisticated component separation methods. Among them, the blind Needlet-ILC (NILC) has great relevance given our current poor knowledge of the B-modes foregrounds. However the expected level of spatial variability of the foreground spectral properties complicates the NILC subtraction of the Galactic contamination. In order to reach the ambitious targets of future CMB experiments, we therefore propose a novel extension of the NILC approach, the Multi-Clustering NILC (MC-NILC), which performs NILC variance minimization on separate regions of the sky (clusters) properly chosen to have similar spectral properties of the B-modes foregrounds emission. Clusters are identified thresholding the ratio of B-modes maps at two separate frequencies which is used as tracer of the spatial distribution of the spectral indices of the Galactic emission in B modes. We consider ratios either of simulated foregrounds-only B modes (ideal case) or of cleaned templates of Galactic emission obtained from realistic simulations. In this work we present an application of MC-NILC to the future LiteBIRD satellite, which targets the observation of both reionization and recombination peaks of the primordial B-modes angular power spectrum with a total error on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $\delta r < 0.001$. We show that MC-NILC provides a CMB solution with residual foregrounds and noise contamination that is significantly reduced with respect to NILC and lower than the primordial signal targeted by LiteBIRD at all angular scales for the ideal case and at the reionization peak for a realistic ratio. This work presents a set of coupled Boltzmann equations describing the intensity and polarisation Stokes parameters of the SGWB. Collision terms, which account for gravitational Compton scattering off of massive objects, are also included. This set resembles that for the CMB Stokes parameters, but the different spin nature of the gravitational radiation and the physics involved in the scattering process determine crucial differences. In this case, due to the Rutherford angular dependence of the cross section, all the SGWB intensity multipoles of order $\ell$ are scattered out, producing outgoing intensity anisotropies of any order $\ell$ if they are present in the incoming radiation. On the other hand, SGWB linear polarisation modes can be expanded in a basis of spherical harmonics with $m=\pm 4$ and $\ell\ge 4$. This means that SGWB polarisation modes can be generated from unpolarised anisotropic radiation only with $m=\pm 4$, therefore requiring at least a hexadecapole anisotropy ($\ell\ge 4$) in the incoming intensity. Assuming a simplified toy model, we solve analytically the set of coupled Boltzmann equations to get explicit expressions for the intensity and polarisation angular power spectra. We confirm the contribution of the gravitational Compton scattering to the SGWB anisoptropies is extremely small for collisions with compact objects in the frequency range of current and upcoming surveys. The system of coupled Boltzmann equations presented here provides a way to an accurate estimate of the total amount of anisotropies generated by multiple SGWB scattering processes off of massive objects, as well as the interplay between polarisation and intensity, during the GW propagation across the LSS of the universe. The CMB is foundational to our understanding of modern physics and continues to be a powerful tool driving our understanding of cosmology and particle physics. In this paper, we outline the broad and unique impact of CMB science for the High Energy Cosmic Frontier in the upcoming decade. We present a demonstration of the in-flight polarization angle calibration for the JAXA/ISAS second strategic large class mission, LiteBIRD, and estimate its impact on the measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter, r, using simulated data. We generate a set of simulated sky maps with CMB and polarized foreground emission, and inject instrumental noise and polarization angle offsets to the 22 (partially overlapping) LiteBIRD frequency channels. Our in-flight angle calibration relies on nulling the EB cross correlation of the polarized signal in each channel. This calibration step has been carried out by two independent groups with a blind analysis, allowing an accuracy of the order of a few arc-minutes to be reached on the estimate of the angle offsets. Both the corrected and uncorrected multi-frequency maps are propagated through the foreground cleaning step, with the goal of computing clean CMB maps. We employ two component separation algorithms, the Bayesian-Separation of Components and Residuals Estimate Tool (B-SeCRET), and the Needlet Internal Linear Combination (NILC). We find that the recovered CMB maps obtained with algorithms that do not make any assumptions about the foreground properties, such as NILC, are only mildly affected by the angle miscalibration. However, polarization angle offsets strongly bias results obtained with the parametric fitting method. Once the miscalibration angles are corrected by EB nulling prior to the component separation, both component separation algorithms result in an unbiased estimation of the r parameter. While this work is motivated by the conceptual design study for LiteBIRD, its framework can be broadly applied to any CMB polarization experiment. The anisotropies of the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background (SGWB) produced by merging compact binaries constitute a possible new probe of the Large-Scale Structure (LSS). However, the significant shot noise contribution caused by the discreteness of the GW sources and the poor angular resolution of the instruments hamper the detection of the intrinsic anisotropies induced by the LSS. In this work, we investigate the potential of cross-correlating forthcoming high precision measurements of the SGWB energy density and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing convergence to mitigate the effect of shot noise. Combining a detailed model of stellar and galactic astrophysics with a novel framework to distribute the GW emitters in the sky, we compute the auto- and cross-correlation power spectra for the two cosmic fields, evaluate the shot noise contribution and predict the signal-to-noise ratio. The results of our analysis show that the SGWB energy density correlates significantly with the CMB lensing convergence and that the cross-correlation between these two cosmic fields reduces the impact of instrumental and shot noise. Unfortunately, the S/N is not high enough to detect the intrinsic SGWB anisotropies. Observing in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz over a large sky area, the Simons Observatory (SO) is poised to address many questions in Galactic astrophysics in addition to its principal cosmological goals. In this work, we provide quantitative forecasts on astrophysical parameters of interest for a range of Galactic science cases. We find that SO can: constrain the frequency spectrum of polarized dust emission at a level of $\Delta\beta_d \lesssim 0.01$ and thus test models of dust composition that predict that $\beta_d$ in polarization differs from that measured in total intensity; measure the correlation coefficient between polarized dust and synchrotron emission with a factor of two greater precision than current constraints; exclude the non-existence of exo-Oort clouds at roughly 2.9$\sigma$ if the true fraction is similar to the detection rate of giant planets; map more than 850 molecular clouds with at least 50 independent polarization measurements at 1 pc resolution; detect or place upper limits on the polarization fractions of CO(2-1) emission and anomalous microwave emission at the 0.1% level in select regions; and measure the correlation coefficient between optical starlight polarization and microwave polarized dust emission in $1^\circ$ patches for all lines of sight with $N_{\rm H} \gtrsim 2\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$. We introduce and validate a delensing framework for the Simons Observatory (SO), which will be used to improve constraints on inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs) by reducing the lensing noise in measurements of the $B$-modes in CMB polarization. SO will initially observe CMB by using three small aperture telescopes and one large-aperture telescope. While polarization maps from small-aperture telescopes will be used to constrain IGWs, the internal CMB lensing maps used to delens will be reconstructed from data from the large-aperture telescope. Since lensing maps obtained from the SO data will be noise-dominated on sub-degree scales, the SO lensing framework constructs a template for lensing-induced $B$-modes by combining internal CMB lensing maps with maps of the cosmic infrared background from Planck as well as galaxy density maps from the LSST survey. We construct a likelihood for constraining the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ that contains auto- and cross-spectra between observed $B$-modes and the lensing $B$-mode template. We test our delensing analysis pipeline on map-based simulations containing survey non-idealities, but that, for this initial exploration, does not include contamination from Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We find that the SO survey masking and inhomogeneous and atmospheric noise have very little impact on the delensing performance, and the $r$ constraint becomes $\sigma(r)\approx 0.0015$ which is close to that obtained from the idealized forecasts in the absence of the Galactic foreground and is nearly a factor of two tighter than without delensing. We also find that uncertainties in the external large-scale structure tracers used in our multi-tracer delensing pipeline lead to bias much smaller than the $1\,\sigma$ statistical uncertainties., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

We study the statistics of various large-scale structure tracers in gravity-only cosmological simulations including baryons and cold dark matter (CDM) initialized with two different transfer functions, and simulated as two distinct fluids. This allows us to study the impact of baryon-CDM relative perturbations on these statistics. In particular, we focus on the statistics of cosmic voids, as well as on the matter and halo real-space 2-point correlation function and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak. We find that the void size function is affected at the 1-2% level at maximum, and that the impact is more important at higher redshift, while the void density profile and void bias are roughly unaffected. We do not detect a sizeable impact of relative baryon-CDM perturbations on the real-space correlation functions of matter and halos or the BAO peak, which is in line with results from previous works. Our results imply that it would be hard to use voids or real-space correlation functions to constrain baryon-CDM relative perturbations, but also that we might not have to include them in models for the analysis of future cosmological surveys data., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, v2: version published in MNRAS

We investigate the formation and growth of massive black hole (BH) seeds in dusty star-forming galaxies, relying and extending the framework proposed by Boco et al. 2020. Specifically, the latter envisages the migration of stellar compact remnants (neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes) via gaseous dynamical friction towards the galaxy nuclear region, and their subsequent merging to grow a massive central BH seed. In this paper we add two relevant ingredients: (i) we include primordial BHs, that could constitute a fraction $f_{\rm pBH}$ of the dark matter, as an additional component participating in the seed growth; (ii) we predict the stochastic gravitational wave background originated during the seed growth, both from stellar compact remnant and from primordial BH mergers. We find that the latter events contribute most to the initial growth of the central seed during a timescale of $10^6-10^7\,\rm yr$, before stellar compact remnant mergers and gas accretion take over. In addition, if the fraction of primordial BHs $f_{\rm pBH}$ is large enough, gravitational waves emitted by their mergers in the nuclear galactic regions could be detected by future interferometers like Einsten Telescope, DECIGO and LISA. As for the associated stochastic gravitational wave background, we predict that it extends over the wide frequency band $10^{-6}\lesssim f [{\rm Hz}]\lesssim 10$, which is very different from the typical range originated by mergers of isolated binary compact objects. On the one hand, the detection of such a background could be a smoking gun to test the proposed seed growth mechanism; on the other hand, it constitutes a relevant contaminant from astrophysical sources to be characterized and subtracted, in the challenging search for a primordial background of cosmological origin., Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the isotropic and anisotropic components of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) originated from unresolved merging compact binaries in galaxies. We base our analysis on an empirical approach to galactic astrophysics that allows to follow the evolution of individual systems. We then characterize the energy density of the SGWB as a tracer of the total matter density, in order to compute the angular power spectrum of anisotropies with the Cosmic Linear Anisotropy Solving System (CLASS) public code in full generality. We obtain predictions for the isotropic energy density and for the angular power spectrum of the SGWB anisotropies, and study the prospect for their observations with advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave and Virgo Observatories and with the Einstein Telescope. We identify the contributions coming from different type of sources (binary black holes, binary neutron stars and black hole-neutron star) and from different redshifts. We examine in detail the spectral shape of the energy density for all types of sources, comparing the results for the two detectors. We find that the power spectrum of the SGWB anisotropies behaves like a power law on large angular scales and drops at small scales: we explain this behaviour in terms of the redshift distribution of sources that contribute most to the signal, and of the sensitivities of the two detectors. Finally, we simulate a high resolution full sky map of the SGWB starting from the power spectra obtained with CLASS and including Poisson statistics and clustering properties., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures

We quantify the calibration requirements for systematic uncertainties for next-generation ground-based observatories targeting the large-angle $B$-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, with a focus on the Simons Observatory (SO). We explore uncertainties on gain calibration, bandpass center frequencies, and polarization angles, including the frequency variation of the latter across the bandpass. We find that gain calibration and bandpass center frequencies must be known to percent levels or less to avoid biases on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ on the order of $\Delta r\sim10^{-3}$, in line with previous findings. Polarization angles must be calibrated to the level of a few tenths of a degree, while their frequency variation between the edges of the band must be known to ${\cal O}(10)$ degrees. Given the tightness of these calibration requirements, we explore the level to which residual uncertainties on these systematics would affect the final constraints on $r$ if included in the data model and marginalized over. We find that the additional parameter freedom does not degrade the final constraints on $r$ significantly, broadening the error bar by ${\cal O}(10\%)$ at most. We validate these results by reanalyzing the latest publicly available data from the BICEP2/Keck collaboration within an extended parameter space covering both cosmological, foreground and systematic parameters. CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5\sigma$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

We investigate the possibility of measuring the primordial gravitational wave (GW) signal across 21 decades in frequencies, using the cosmic microwave background (CMB), pulsar timing arrays (PTA), and laser and atomic interferometers. For the CMB and PTA experiments we consider the LiteBIRD mission and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), respectively. For the interferometers we consider space mission proposals including the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the Big Bang Observer (BBO), the Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO), the $\mu$Ares experiment, the Decihertz Observatory (DO), and the Atomic Experiment for Dark Matter and Gravity Exploration in Space (AEDGE), as well as the ground-based Einstein Telescope (ET) proposal. We implement the mathematics needed to compute sensitivities for both CMB and interferometers, and derive the response functions for the latter from the first principles. We also evaluate the effect of the astrophysical foreground contamination in each experiment. We present binned sensitivity curves and error bars on the energy density parameter, $\Omega_{GW}h^2$, as a function of frequency for two representative classes of models for the stochastic background of primordial GW: the quantum vacuum fluctuation in the metric from single-field slow-roll inflation, and the source-induced tensor perturbation from the spectator axion-SU(2) inflation models. The search for primordial gravitational waves through the $B$-mode polarization pattern in the CMB is one of the major goals of current and future CMB experiments. Besides foregrounds, a potential hurdle in this search is the anisotropic secondary $B$-mode polarization generated by the scattering of CMB photons off free electrons produced during patchy cosmological reionization. Robust predictions of these secondary anisotropies are challenging because of uncertainties in the reionization history. In this paper, we revise estimates of the reionization-induced $B$-mode signal by incorporating recent advances in the understanding of reionization through observations of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. To derive these $B$-mode estimates, we use high-dynamic-range radiative transfer simulations of reionization that are calibrated to the Ly$\alpha$ data. These simulations are also consistent with a variety of other high-redshift observations. We find that around multipoles $\ell\approx 100$, reionization induces $B$-mode power with $\ell(\ell+1)C_\ell^{BB}/2\pi\approx 4\times 10^{-6}\,\mu$K$^2$. This secondary signal is thus at the level of the primordial signal with the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r<10^{-4}$, and can increase by a factor of $\sim 50$ if reionization is sourced by highly clustered sources residing in haloes with mass of $\sim 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$. Our findings suggest that the contribution of patchy reionization to the search for primordial gravitational waves is unlikely to be a concern for currently planned CMB experiments., Comment: Published in JCAP

In this work we present a Neural Network (NN) algorithm for the identification of the appropriate parametrization of diffuse polarized Galactic emissions in the context of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) $B$-mode multi-frequency observations. In particular, we have focused our analysis on low frequency foregrounds relevant for polarization observation: namely Galactic Synchrotron and Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). We have implemented and tested our approach on a set of simulated maps corresponding to the frequency coverage and sensitivity represented by future satellite and low frequency ground based probes. The NN efficiency in recognizing the right parametrization of foreground emission in different sky regions reaches an accuracy of about $90\%$. We have compared this performance with the $\chi^{2}$ information following parametric foreground estimation using multi-frequency fitting, and quantify the gain provided by a NN approach. Our results show the relevance of model recognition in CMB $B$-mode observations, and highlight the exploitation of dedicated procedures to this purpose., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP

We consider an Early Dark Energy (EDE) cosmological model, and perform an analysis which takes into account both background and perturbation effects via the parameters $c^{2}_{\rm eff}$ and $c^{2}_{\rm vis}$, representing effective sound speed and viscosity, respectively. By using the latest available data we derive constraints on the amount of dark energy at early times and the present value of the equation of state. Our focus is on the effect that early dark energy has on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data, including polarization and lensing, in a generalized parameter space including a varying total neutrino mass, and tensor to scalar ratio, besides the 6 standard parameters of the minimal cosmological model. We find that the inclusion of Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data and CMB lensing significantly improves the constraints on the EDE parameters, while other high redshift data like the Quasar Hubble diagram and the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest BAO have instead a negligible impact. We find $\Omega_{\rm eDE} < 0.00391 $ and $w_{0} < -0.9500 $ at the $95 \%$ C.L. for EDE accounting for its clustering through the inclusion of perturbation dynamics. This limit becomes weaker $\Omega_{\rm eDE} < 0.00337$ if perturbations are neglected. The constraints on the EDE parameters are remarkably stable even when $\Sigma m_{\nu}$, and $r$ parameters are varied, with weak degeneracies between $\Omega_{\rm eDE}$ and $r$ or $\Sigma m_{\nu}$. Perturbation parameters are not constrained with current data sets, and tensions between the CMB derived $H_0$ and $\sigma_8$ values and those measured with local probes are not eased. We present a measurement of the gravitational lensing deflection power spectrum reconstructed with two seasons cosmic microwave background polarization data from the POLARBEAR experiment. Observations were taken at 150 GHz from 2012 to 2014 which survey three patches of sky totaling 30 square degrees. We test the consistency of the lensing spectrum with a Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology and reject the no-lensing hypothesis at a confidence of 10.9 sigma including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We observe a value of A_L = 1.33 +/- 0.32 (statistical) +/- 0.02 (systematic) +/- 0.07 (foreground) using all polarization lensing estimators, which corresponds to a 24% accurate measurement of the lensing amplitude. Compared to the analysis of the first year data, we have improved the breadth of both the suite of null tests and the error terms included in the estimation of systematic contamination.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. We study how the shape of the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves can be constrained by future experiments looking at the B-mode of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization. We implement a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) including the effects of diffuse foreground residuals, following component separation, in the uncertainty of CMB angular power spectra, and taking into account the gravitational lensing by Large Scale Structure. We perform our study by considering the capabilities of future B-mode CMB experiments such as LiteBIRD, the Simons Observatory (SO) and Stage-IV (CMB-S4), in particular in detecting deviations of the primordial tensor spectrum from the scale-invariant behavior. We find that diffuse foreground residuals impact substantially both the derivation of the PCA basis and the corresponding constraining power, in all cases. In particular, depending on which experimental specifications and which value $r$ of tensor-to-scalar ratio for cosmological perturbations are considered, adding foregrounds residuals can determine an increase as large as a factor $\sim 4$ both on the uncertainty on $r$ and on the recovery of the PCA modes. The cross-correlation between fluctuations in the electron scattering optical depth $\tau_{\rm es}$ as probed by future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments, and fluctuations in the 21cm differential brightness temperature $\Delta T_{\rm 21cm}$ as probed by ground-based radio interferometers, will trace the reionization history of the Universe. In particular, the $\tau_{\rm es}-$21cm cross-correlation should yield a determination of the characteristic bubble size distribution and ionization fraction as a function of redshift. When assuming that the cross-correlation signal is limited by instrumental noise rather than by foregrounds, we estimate its potential detectability by upcoming experiments. Specifically, the combination of HERA and Simons Observatory, CMB-S4 and PICO should yield a signal-to-noise ratio around 3 - 6, while and the exploitation of the SKA should increase it to 10-20. Finally, we have discussed how such levels of detectability can be affected when (simply modeled) 21cm foregrounds are present. For the most promising PICO$\times$SKA configuration, an efficiency of foreground removal to a level of $7\times 10^{-4}$ is needed to achieve a $5\sigma$ detection of the cross-correlation signal; in addition, safe avoidance of foreground contamination in the line-of-sight Fourier modes above $0.03 \,h\,\rm Mpc^{-1}$ would guarantee a detection significance around $3\sigma$., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP

We present the first measurement of cross-correlation between the lensing potential, reconstructed from cosmic microwave background (CMB) {\it polarization} data, and the cosmic shear field from galaxy shapes. This measurement is made using data from the POLARBEAR CMB experiment and the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. By analyzing an 11~deg$^2$ overlapping region, we reject the null hypothesis at 3.5$\sigma$\ and constrain the amplitude of the {\bf cross-spectrum} to $\widehat{A}_{\rm lens}=1.70\pm 0.48$, where $\widehat{A}_{\rm lens}$ is the amplitude normalized with respect to the Planck~2018{} prediction, based on the flat $\Lambda$ cold dark matter cosmology. The first measurement of this {\bf cross-spectrum} without relying on CMB temperature measurements is possible due to the deep POLARBEAR map with a noise level of ${\sim}$6\,$\mu$K-arcmin, as well as the deep HSC data with a high galaxy number density of $n_g=23\,{\rm arcmin^{-2}}$. The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. The hot dense environment of the early universe is known to have produced large numbers of baryons, photons, and neutrinos. These extreme conditions may have also produced other long-lived species, including new light particles (such as axions or sterile neutrinos) or gravitational waves. The gravitational effects of any such light relics can be observed through their unique imprint in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the large-scale structure, and the primordial light element abundances, and are important in determining the initial conditions of the universe. We argue that future cosmological observations, in particular improved maps of the CMB on small angular scales, can be orders of magnitude more sensitive for probing the thermal history of the early universe than current experiments. These observations offer a unique and broad discovery space for new physics in the dark sector and beyond, even when its effects would not be visible in terrestrial experiments or in astrophysical environments. Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. We describe how astrophysical observations will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational interactions with the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. Opening up a new window of millimeter-wave observations that span frequency bands in the range of 30 to 500 GHz, survey half the sky, and are both an order of magnitude deeper (about 0.5 uK-arcmin) and of higher-resolution (about 10 arcseconds) than currently funded surveys would yield an enormous gain in understanding of both fundamental physics and astrophysics.
