The purpose of this study is to outline an interesting and unitary profile regarding the presence of money and the economy within a genre; it is also a literary season where we are witnessing an important paradigm shift in representation, and in which, at first glance, money and economy seem to be absent or almost absent. Paradoxically, it appears in many ways more productive to study the representation and dynamics of money and the economy in works where its presence does not appear evident, and the economic prospects of the characters are minima, rather than working on a monography on nineteenth-century novel and l'argent. As Pellini states, in the nineteenth century money had in fact become "a pervasive presence", an element "taken for granted [...] in some cases even redundant", coming to "become stereotyped with often no interest."Whereas, in the following season, this element becomes almost elusive in the eyes of the reader, being treated just like an acquired fact. L’argent seems to eclipse behind other planets, behind new elements that instead radiate in front of our gaze, such as the symbol and subjectivity, a symptom of an inner reality that takes precedence over the external world. In showing these dynamics, the first part of this work focuses on Gide's narrative production. In the first chapter, therefore, various fundamental themes are addressed in order to understand not only the poetics of the writer but also his economic conception. Elements such as freedom, revolt and consumption are indeed essential themes for understanding the two essential poles around which Gide’s economic and literary thought is built, namely the gratuitous act and false money. The second part analyzes into detail the representation of money and economy in what is perhaps the masterpiece of modernist French literature: In search of lost time. In this novel, purely immaterial, intellectual, artistic, and philosophical values are placed in front of reader, which are those that emerge from the research undertaken by the character of the narrator. However, money and economics are dealt with in the Recherche, and the symbolic and/or abstract element is only one aspect of a theme that encompasses a whole creative process.In the first chapter of this second part a very important element of Proust's reflection is addressed, namely the division and social characterization of the represented world. Starting from this aspect, some elements are then highlighted that introduce the economic and monetary question in the novel, such as the wealth and social position of the characters. The author operates a clear division between those who work and those who do not work, and who are nevertheless the heart of the work. The economy of the Proustian world is the economy of an idle class, which is based not on need but on desire. It is an economy that involves pleasure but also the fields of the market, marriage, inheritance, gift, and love. Finally, the last chapter attempts to show how this economy of desire is also linked to the world of literature at the same time. Like Gide's work, Proust's too has literature itself and its relationship with the world as its center. The two writers reflect on the problem of the influences of money on art and on the symbolic relationship that unites and binds these elements. And by representing the world of economics and money in their works, these authors show at the same time the characteristics of continuity and rupture in relation to the representations of the past. Both illustrate in an emblematic way the crisis of an era in which relativism and the decay of general equivalents (money, father figure, etc.) have cast shadows on a future that the horror and destruction of the Great War will compromise for at least two generations. The effects of this crisis also have repercussions in the field of literature, and in particular on that genre that had been the champion of the previous century: the novel., Cette étude vise à esquisser un profil intéressant, unifié et cohérent de la présence de l'argent et de l'économie au sein d'un genre et d'un mouvement littéraire qui ont connu un changement de paradigme majeur dans la représentation, et dans lesquels, à première vue, l'argent et l'économie semblent absents ou presque. Paradoxalement, il semble à bien des égards plus productif d'étudier la représentation et la dynamique de l'argent et de l'économie dans des œuvres où sa présence n'est pas apparente et où les préoccupations économiques des personnages sont minimes, plutôt que de travailler à une monographie sur le roman du XIXe siècle et l'argent. Comme l'affirme Pellini, au XIXe siècle, l'argent est en effet devenu "une présence omniprésente", un élément "considéré comme allant de soi, dans certains cas même redondant", arrivant à "devenir un stéréotype, souvent dénué d'intérêt". Alors que dans le courant suivant, cet élément devient presque insaisissable aux yeux du lecteur, étant traité comme un fait acquis. L'argent semble donc se dérober derrière de nouveaux éléments qui, au contraire, occupent notre attention, comme le symbole de la subjectivité, symptôme d'une réalité intérieure qui prend le dessus sur le monde extérieur. Dans le premier chapitre, un certain nombre de thèmes fondamentaux sont abordés afin de comprendre non seulement la pensée poétique de Gide mais aussi sa conception économique. Des questions telles que la liberté, la révolte et la consommation sont en effet fondamentales pour comprendre les deux pôles essentiels autour desquels se construit la pensée économique gidienne, c’est-à-dire l’acte gratuite et la fausse monnaye. Dans la deuxième partie de cette étude, la représentation de l'argent et de l'économie dans l’œuvre proustienne est analysée en détail. À la recherche du temps perdu est un roman qui, place sous les yeux du lecteur des valeurs purement immatérielles, intellectuelles, artistiques et philosophiques. Cependant, l'argent et l'économie sont largement traités dans la Recherche, et l'élément symbolique et/ou abstrait n'est qu'une facette d'un thème qui englobe tout un processus de création. Dans le premier chapitre de cette deuxième partie, un aspect très important de la réflexion de Proust est présenté, qui concerne l'analyse sociale que l'auteur met en scène dans son œuvre. À partir de cet aspect, certains éléments qui introduisent la question monétaire et économique sont mis en évidence et analysés, comme la richesse et la position sociale des personnages. L’économie du monde proustienne est, en effet, l’économie de la classe des loisirs qui se base sur le désir et non sur le besoin. C'est une économie qui implique le plaisir mais aussi le monde de la bourse, le mariage, l’héritage, le don et l’amour. Enfin dans le dernier chapitre, je montre comment cette économie du désir est également liée au monde de la littérature et l'implique. Comme l'œuvre de Gide, celle de Proust a aussi pour centre la littérature elle-même et son rapport au monde. Les deux écrivains posent donc également le problème de l'influence de l'argent sur la littérature et de la relation symbiotique que ces deux éléments semblent avoir toujours entretenue. Et en représentant le monde de l'économie et de l'argent dans leurs œuvres, ces auteurs présentent à la fois des caractéristiques de continuité et de rupture par rapport aux représentations du passé. Tous deux représentent de manière emblématique la crise d'une époque où le relativisme et la décadence des équivalents généraux ont jeté des ombres sur un avenir que l'horreur et la destruction de la Grande Guerre allaient compromettre pendant au moins deux générations ; et les effets de cette crise ont également eu des répercussions dans le domaine de la littérature et en particulier sur ce genre (équivalent général aussi ?) qui avait été le champion du siècle précédent : le roman.
