Abstract

Paragangliomas (PGs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors that originate in the autonomic nervous system. Functionally, they are highly vascular and may be parasympathetic or sympathetic. Parasympathetic tumors are usually asymptomatic and inactive, located mostly in the skull base in the distribution of IX and X cranial nerves. In contrast, sympathetic tumors are highly active (secretes norepinephrine) and symptomatic and mainly located in the abdomen and pelvic regions. Surgical removal of these tumors is curative and key to favorable outcomes. Some of these tumors have malignant potential as well. Meticulous preoperative preparation is needed but many patients may still land up in hypertensive crises intraoperatively which should be managed promptly and cautiously by the anesthesia team to reduce morbidity and mortality during surgery. Here, we describe the successful anesthetic management of a patient diagnosed with large aortocaval PG abutting the aorta and compressing the inferior vena cava and bilateral renal veins.

Abstract

Globally, the increased demand for engineers is not matched by an increase in graduates. This is further exacerbated by the fact that student dropout rates in engineering are higher than in other disciplines. Understanding engineering students’ performance patterns and potential influences can lead to developing interventions to improve engineering students’ success. Recent advances in data science and educational data mining have made it possible to extract valuable information from historical data, which can supplement interventions. This study sought to extract insights and information from real-world data, analyse correlations in the dataset’s variables and better understand the influences of student performance. Exploratory data analysis was applied to the dataset to visualise the dataset and infer the correlations between variables provided in the dataset on student performance patterns. We used Python for data analysis and visualising the correlation between variables. The results show gender disparity in engineering enrollments, with only a quarter of female students enrolled. The study also indicates that the completion rates could be much higher. Another finding is that most students who drop out do so because of choosing the wrong qualifications. Furthermore, when comparing the percentages, female students performed slightly better than their male counterparts. The correlation analysis shows no relationships between gender, race, admission point score, mathematics marks and science marks with student performance in engineering. Understanding student performance patterns can reduce dropout rates by correctly advising students to enrol on the most suitable programmes, and aid support interventions are needed to improve student success in engineering.

Abstract

Precision medicine (PM) is an innovative medical approach that considers differences in the individuals’ omics, medical histories, lifestyles, and environmental information in treating diseases. To fully achieve the envisaged gains of PM, various contemporary and future technologies have to be employed, among which are nanotechnology, sensor network, big data, and artificial intelligence. These technologies and other applications require a communication network that will enable them to work in tandem for the benefit of PM. Hence, communication technology serves as the nervous system of PM, without which the entire system collapses. Therefore, it is essential to explore and determine the candidate communication technology requirements that can guarantee the envisioned gains of PM. To the best of our knowledge, no work exploring how communication technology directly impacts the development and deployment of PM solutions exists. This survey paper is designed to stimulate discussions on PM from the communication engineering perspective. We introduce the fundamentals of PM and the demands in terms of quality of service that each of the enabling technologies of PM places on the communication network. We explore the information in the literature to suggest the ideal metric values of the key performance indicators for the implementation of the different components of PM. The comparative analysis of the suitability of the contemporary and future communication technologies for PM implementation is discussed. Finally, some open research challenges for the candidate communication technologies that will enable the full implementation of PM solutions are highlighted.

Abstract

Neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements are needed to improve interaction modeling to meet the precision needs of neutrino experiments in efforts to measure oscillation parameters and search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We review the difficulties associated with modeling neutrino-nucleus interactions that lead to a dependence on event generators in oscillation analyses and cross section measurements alike. We then describe data-driven model validation techniques intended to address this model dependence. The method relies on utilizing various goodness-of-fit tests and the correlations between different observables and channels to probe the model for defects in the phase space relevant for the desired analysis. These techniques shed light on relevant mis-modeling, allowing it to be detected before it begins to bias the cross section results. We compare more commonly used model validation methods which directly validate the model against alternative ones to these data-driven techniques and show their efficacy with fake data studies. These studies demonstrate that employing data-driven model validation in cross section measurements represents a reliable strategy to produce robust results that will stimulate the desired improvements to interaction modeling.

Abstract

Large neutrino liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments can broaden their physics reach by reconstructing and interpreting MeV-scale energy depositions, or blips, present in their data. We demonstrate new calorimetric and particle discrimination capabilities at the MeV energy scale using reconstructed blips in data from the MicroBooNE LArTPC at Fermilab. We observe a concentration of low energy ($<$3 MeV) blips around fiberglass mechanical support struts along the TPC edges with energy spectrum features consistent with the Compton edge of 2.614 MeV $^{208}$Tl decay $\gamma$ rays. These features are used to verify proper calibration of electron energy scales in MicroBooNE's data to few percent precision and to measure the specific activity of $^{208}$Tl in the fiberglass composing these struts, $(11.7 \pm 0.2 ~\text{(stat)} \pm 2.8~\text{(syst)})~\text{Bq/kg}$. Cosmogenically-produced blips above 3 MeV in reconstructed energy are used to showcase the ability of large LArTPCs to distinguish between low-energy proton and electron energy depositions. An enriched sample of low-energy protons selected using this new particle discrimination technique is found to be smaller in data than in dedicated CORSIKA cosmic ray simulations, suggesting either incorrect CORSIKA modeling of incident cosmic fluxes or particle transport modeling issues in Geant4., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures total including the supplementary material section, 1 table. Abstract

A significant challenge in measurements of neutrino oscillations is reconstructing the incoming neutrino energies. While modern fully-active tracking calorimeters such as liquid argon time projection chambers in principle allow the measurement of all final state particles above some detection threshold, undetected neutrons remain a considerable source of missing energy with little to no data constraining their production rates and kinematics. We present the first demonstration of tagging neutrino-induced neutrons in liquid argon time projection chambers using secondary protons emitted from neutron-argon interactions in the MicroBooNE detector. We describe the method developed to identify neutrino-induced neutrons and demonstrate its performance using neutrons produced in muon-neutrino charged current interactions. The method is validated using a small subset of MicroBooNE's total dataset. The selection yields a sample with $60\%$ of selected tracks corresponding to neutron-induced secondary protons.

Abstract

We present a deep learning-based method for estimating the neutrino energy of charged-current neutrino-argon interactions. We employ a recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture for neutrino energy estimation in the MicroBooNE experiment, utilizing liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector technology. Traditional energy estimation approaches in LArTPCs, which largely rely on reconstructing and summing visible energies, often experience sizable biases and resolution smearing because of the complex nature of neutrino interactions and the detector response. The estimation of neutrino energy can be improved after considering the kinematics information of reconstructed final-state particles. Utilizing kinematic information of reconstructed particles, the deep learning-based approach shows improved resolution and reduced bias for the muon neutrino Monte Carlo simulation sample compared to the traditional approach. In order to address the common concern about the effectiveness of this method on experimental data, the RNN-based energy estimator is further examined and validated with dedicated data-simulation consistency tests using MicroBooNE data. We also assess its potential impact on a neutrino oscillation study after accounting for all statistical and systematic uncertainties and show that it enhances physics sensitivity. This method has good potential to improve the performance of other physics analyses.

Abstract

Tensile deformation and fracture behaviour of AISI 431 martensitic stainless steel, over the temperature range of 300-823 K, has been examined. Yield and ultimate tensile strength values decreased gradually from room temperature to intermediate temperatures, followed by a rapid decrease at high temperatures. At the intermediate temperatures (523-673 K), the steel exhibited jerky/serrated flow and anomalous variations in terms of a plateau in flow stress/strength and work hardening parameters and minima in ductility. These manifestations were identified to be the signatures of dynamic strain ageing, operating at these temperatures. At high temperatures, a rapid decrease in flow stress/strength values and increase in ductility with increasing temperature indicated the dominance of dynamic recovery. The fracture remained transgranular ductile at all temperatures. Work hardening relations that best described the flow behaviour of AISI 431 steel were identified. Variations of the work hardening parameters with temperature were consistent with the variations exhibited by strength and ductility values.

Abstract

We report the first double-differential cross section measurement of neutral-current neutral pion (NC$\pi^0$) production in neutrino-argon scattering, as well as single-differential measurements of the same channel in terms of final states with and without protons. The kinematic variables of interest for these measurements are the $\pi^0$ momentum and the $\pi^0$ scattering angle with respect to the neutrino beam. A total of 4971 candidate NC$\pi^0$ events fully-contained within the MicroBooNE detector are selected using data collected at a mean neutrino energy of $\sim 0.8$~GeV from $6.4\times10^{20}$ protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. After extensive data-driven model validation to ensure unbiased unfolding, the Wiener-SVD method is used to extract nominal flux-averaged cross sections. The results are compared to predictions from commonly used neutrino event generators, which tend to overpredict the measured NC$\pi^0$ cross section, especially in the 0.2-0.5~GeV/c $\pi^0$ momentum range and at forward scattering angles. Events with at least one proton present in the final state are also underestimated. This data will help improve the modeling of NC$\pi^0$ production, which represents a major background in measurements of charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector and in searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract

We present a measurement of neutral pion production in charged-current interactions using data recorded with the MicroBooNE detector exposed to Fermilab's booster neutrino beam. The signal comprises one muon, one neutral pion, any number of nucleons, and no charged pions. Studying neutral pion production in the MicroBooNE detector provides an opportunity to better understand neutrino-argon interactions, and is crucial for future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using a dataset corresponding to $6.86 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target, we present single-differential cross sections in muon and neutral pion momenta, scattering angles with respect to the beam for the outgoing muon and neutral pion, as well as the opening angle between the muon and neutral pion. Data extracted cross sections are compared to generator predictions. We report good agreement between the data and the models for scattering angles, except for an over-prediction by generators at muon forward angles. Similarly, the agreement between data and the models as a function of momentum is good, except for an underprediction by generators in the medium momentum ranges, $200-400$ MeV for muons and $100-200$ MeV for pions.

Abstract

Charged-current neutrino interactions with final states containing zero mesons and at least one proton are of high interest for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, we have obtained the first double-differential cross section measurements of this channel for muon neutrino scattering on an argon target with a proton momentum threshold of 0.25 GeV/c. We also report a flux-averaged total cross section of $\sigma = (11.8 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ / Ar and several single-differential measurements which extend and improve upon previous results. Statistical and systematic uncertainties are quantified with a full treatment of correlations across 359 kinematic bins, including correlations between distributions describing different observables. 14. A parsimonious approach to delineating groundwater potential zones using geospatial modeling and multicriteria decision analysis techniques under limited data availability condition

Abstract

This study delineates groundwater potential zones by following an “equifinality” approach and adopting a standard methodology using remote sensing, geospatial modeling, geographic information system (GIS) and multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques. A total of 11 thematic layers (ie, rainfall, topographic elevation, slope, slope length, slope steepness, soil, geomorphology, geology, drainage density, and pre‐ and post‐monsoon groundwater levels) which have an influence on the occurrence of the groundwater are developed. The suitable weights to themes and their features are assigned and then normalized by using an analytic hierarchy process (AHP)—MCDA technique. All themes are integrated in GIS for generating a groundwater potential index (GPI) map, which classifies the study area into three zones of “good” (588.5 km2, 34.1%), “moderate” (933.4 km2, 54.1%), and “poor” (203.3 km2, 11.8%) groundwater potential. Furthermore, the accuracy of the developed GPI map is verified from the coherent estimates of rainfall‐recharge. Unlike earlier studies, this study further evaluates relative sensitivity of the themes, and develops a novel “parsimonious” groundwater potential index (PGPI). The PGPI is a cost‐effective and time‐efficient method that excludes redundant parameters from the analysis and employs only the most sensitive themes in assessing groundwater potential. The results of both GPI and PGPI are found in good harmony over 86.7% area, which confirms the efficacy of the developed PGPI. The results of this study may be of interest to planners and policymakers as a guideline for locating appropriate groundwater development sites and managing sustainable water supplies, especially under data scarcity conditions and/or in developing countries.

Abstract

We report the first double-differential neutrino-argon cross section measurement made simultaneously for final states with and without protons for the inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interaction channel. The proton kinematics of this channel are further explored with a differential cross section measurement as a function of the leading proton's kinetic energy that extends across the detection threshold. These measurements utilize data collected using the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4$\times10^{20}$ protons on target from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of $\sim$0.8 GeV. Extensive data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed. This motivates enlarging the uncertainties with an empirical reweighting approach to minimize the possibility of extracting biased cross section results. The extracted nominal flux-averaged cross sections are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing severe mismodeling of final states without protons for muon neutrino charged-current interactions, possibly from insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These measurements provide a wealth of new information useful for improving event generators which will enhance the sensitivity of precision measurements in neutrino experiments.

Abstract

A detailed understanding of inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To that end, we report a comprehensive set of differential cross section measurements for this channel that simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the channel into final states with and without protons. Measurements of the proton kinematics and proton multiplicity of the final state are also presented. For these measurements, we utilize data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4$\times10^{20}$ protons on target from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam at a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. We present in detail the cross section extraction procedure, including the unfolding, and model validation that uses data to model comparisons and the conditional constraint formalism to detect mismodeling that may introduce biases to extracted cross sections that are larger than their uncertainties. The validation exposes insufficiencies in the overall model, motivating the inclusion of an additional data-driven reweighting systematic to ensure the accuracy of the unfolding. The extracted results are compared to a number of event generators and their performance is discussed with a focus on the regions of phase-space that indicate the greatest need for modeling improvements.

Abstract

We present a first search for dark-trident scattering in a neutrino beam using a data set corresponding to $7.2 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target taken with the MicroBooNE detector at Fermilab. Proton interactions in the neutrino target at the Main Injector produce $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons, which could decay into dark-matter (DM) particles mediated via a dark photon $A^\prime$. A convolutional neural network is trained to identify interactions of the DM particles in the liquid-argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) exploiting its image-like reconstruction capability. In the absence of a DM signal, we provide limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the squared kinematic mixing parameter $\varepsilon^2$ as a function of the dark-photon mass in the range $10\le M_{A^\prime}\le 400$ MeV. The limits cover previously unconstrained parameter space for the production of fermion or scalar DM particles $\chi$ for two benchmark models with mass ratios $M_{\chi}/M_{A^\prime}=0.6$ and $2$ and for dark fine-structure constants $0.1\le\alpha_D\le 1$.

Abstract

In Plasmodium, protein kinases govern key biological processes of the parasite life cycle involved in the establishment of infection, dissemination and sexual reproduction. The rodent malaria model Plasmodium berghei encodes for 66 putative eukaryotic protein kinases (ePKs) as identified through modelling domain signatures and are highly conserved in Plasmodium falciparum. We report here the functional characterisation of a putative serine-threonine kinase PBANKA_0311400 identified in this kinome analysis and designate it as Pbstk2. To elucidate its role, we knocked out Pbstk2 locus and performed a detailed phenotypic analysis at different life cycle stages. The Pbstk2 knockout (KO) was not compromised in asexual blood stage propagation, transmission and development in the mosquito vector. The Pbstk2 KO produced viable salivary gland sporozoites that successfully transformed into exo-erythrocytic forms (EEFs) and were morphologically indistinguishable from wild-type GFP (WT GFP) with regard to size and shape until 48 h. An intravenous dose of 1×103 Pbstk2 KO sporozoites in C57BL/6 mice failed to establish blood stage infection and a higher dose of 5X103 showed a 2–3 day delay in prepatency as compared to WT GFP parasites. Consistent with such an observation, analysis of in vitro EEF development at 62 h revealed that the hepatic merozoite numbers were reduced to nearly 40% as compared to WT GFP and showed meagre expression of MSP1. Our studies provide evidence for the role of PbSTK2 in late liver stage development and for the successful establishment of a timely blood stage infection.

Abstract

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) decaying into $\nu e^+e^-$ or $\nu\pi^0$ final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's Main Injector corresponding to a total exposure of $7.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. We set upper limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the mixing parameter $\lvert U_{\mu 4}\rvert^2$ in the mass ranges $10\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 150$ MeV for the $\nu e^+e^-$ channel and $150\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 245$ MeV for the $\nu\pi^0$ channel, assuming $\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{\tau 4}\rvert^2 = 0$. Abstract

We present a set of new generalized kinematic imbalance variables that can be measured in neutrino scattering. These variables extend previous measurements of kinematic imbalance on the transverse plane, and are more sensitive to modeling of nuclear effects. We demonstrate the enhanced power of these variables using simulation, and then use the MicroBooNE detector to measure them for the first time. We report flux-integrated single- and double-differential measurements of charged-current muon neutrino scattering on argon using a topolgy with one muon and one proton in the final state as a function of these novel kinematic imbalance variables. These measurements allow us to demonstrate that the treatment of charged current quasielastic interactions in GENIE version 2 is inadequate to describe data. Further, they reveal tensions with more modern generator predictions particularly in regions of phase space where final state interactions are important.

Abstract

The high pace and increase in cloud computing technology and associated applications, especially large scale data centres, have demanded energy efficient and Quality of Service (QoS) oriented computing platform. To meet these requirements, virtualization and Virtual Machine (VM) consolidation has emerged as an effective solution. The optimization in VM consolidation by means of efficient dynamic resource-utilization prediction, VM selection and placement can achieve optimal solution for energy efficient and QoS oriented cloud computing system. In this paper, an evolutionary computing algorithm called Adaptive Genetic Algorithm (A-GA) based VM consolidation approach has been developed. A-GA based placement policy and its implementation with different VM selection policies like Minimum Migration Time (MMT), Maximum Correlation (MC) and Random Selection (RS), along with different CPU utilization estimation approaches like Inter Quartile Range (IQR), Local Regression (LR), Local Robust Regression (LRR), static THReshold (THR) and Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) has revealed that A-GA based consolidation with MMT selection policy and combined IQR and LRR can enable optimal VM consolidation for large scale infrastructures. In addition, the proposed A-GA policy has exhibited better performance as compared to other meta-heuristics such as Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Best Fit Decreasing. The proposed consolidation system can be used for large scale cloud infrastructures where energy conservation, minimal Service Level Agreement (SLA) violation and QoS assurance is inevitable.

Abstract

We present a novel methodology to search for intranuclear neutron-antineutron transition ($n\rightarrow\bar{n}$) followed by $\bar{n}$-nucleon annihilation within an $^{40}$Ar nucleus, using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector. A discovery of $n\rightarrow\bar{n}$ transition or a new best limit on the lifetime of this process would either constitute physics beyond the Standard Model or greatly constrain theories of baryogenesis, respectively. The approach presented in this paper makes use of deep learning methods to select $n\rightarrow\bar{n}$ events based on their unique features and differentiate them from cosmogenic backgrounds. The achieved signal and background efficiencies are (70.22$\pm$6.04)\% and (0.0020$\pm$0.0003)\%, respectively. A demonstration of a search is performed with a data set corresponding to an exposure of $3.32 \times10^{26}\,$neutron-years, and where the background rate is constrained through direct measurement, assuming the presence of a negligible signal. With this approach, no excess of events over the background prediction is observed, setting a demonstrative lower bound on the $n\rightarrow\bar{n}$ lifetime in $^{40}$Ar of $\tau_{\textrm{m}} \gtrsim 1.1\times10^{26}\,$years, and on the free $n\rightarrow\bar{n}$ transition time of $\tau_{\textrm{\nnbar}} \gtrsim 2.6\times10^{5}\,$s, each at the $90\%$ confidence level. Abstract

We report the measurement of the differential cross section $d^{2}\sigma (E_{\nu})/ d\cos(\theta_{\mu}) dP_{\mu}$ for inclusive muon-neutrino charged-current scattering on argon. This measurement utilizes data from 6.4$\times10^{20}$ protons on target of exposure collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located along the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8~GeV. The mapping from reconstructed kinematics to truth quantities, particularly from reconstructed to true neutrino energy, is validated within uncertainties by comparing the distribution of reconstructed hadronic energy in data to that of the model prediction in different muon scattering angle bins after applying a conditional constraint from the muon momentum distribution in data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled within uncertainties in simulation, enabling the unfolding to a three-dimensional measurement over muon momentum, muon scattering angle, and neutrino energy. The unfolded measurement covers an extensive phase space, providing a wealth of information useful for future liquid argon time projection chamber experiments measuring neutrino oscillations. Comparisons against a number of commonly used model predictions are included and their performance in different parts of the available phase-space is discussed.

Abstract

We report measurements of radon progeny in liquid argon within the MicroBooNE time projection chamber (LArTPC). The presence of specific radon daughters in MicroBooNE's 85 metric tons of active liquid argon bulk is probed with newly developed charge-based low-energy reconstruction tools and analysis techniques to detect correlated $^{214}$Bi-$^{214}$Po radioactive decays. Special datasets taken during periods of active radon doping enable new demonstrations of the calorimetric capabilities of single-phase neutrino LArTPCs for $\beta$ and $\alpha$ particles with electron-equivalent energies ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 MeV. By applying $^{214}$Bi-$^{214}$Po detection algorithms to data recorded over a 46-day period, no statistically significant presence of radioactive $^{214}$Bi is detected, and a limit on the activity is placed at $<0.35$ mBq/kg at the 95% confidence level. This bulk $^{214}$Bi radiopurity limit -- the first ever reported for a liquid argon detector incorporating liquid-phase purification -- is then further discussed in relation to the targeted upper limit of 1 mBq/kg on bulk $^{222}$Rn activity for the DUNE neutrino detector.

Abstract

We present a measurement of $\eta$ production from neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector. The modeling of resonant neutrino interactions on argon is a critical aspect of the neutrino oscillation physics program being carried out by the DUNE and Short Baseline Neutrino programs. $\eta$ production in neutrino interactions provides a powerful new probe of resonant interactions, complementary to pion channels, and is particularly suited to the study of higher-order resonances beyond the $\Delta(1232)$. We measure a flux-integrated cross section for neutrino-induced $\eta$ production on argon of $3.22 \pm 0.84 \; \textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.86 \; \textrm{(syst.)}$ $10^{-41}{\textrm{cm}}^{2}$/nucleon. By demonstrating the successful reconstruction of the two photons resulting from $\eta$ production, this analysis enables a novel calibration technique for electromagnetic showers in GeV accelerator neutrino experiments.

Abstract

MicroBooNE is a neutrino experiment located in the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at Fermilab, which collected data from 2015 to 2021. MicroBooNE's liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) is accompanied by a photon detection system consisting of 32 photomultiplier tubes used to measure the argon scintillation light and determine the timing of neutrino interactions. Analysis techniques combining light signals and reconstructed tracks are applied to achieve a neutrino interaction time resolution of $\mathcal{O}(1\,\text{ns})$. The result obtained allows MicroBooNE to access the ns neutrino pulse structure of the BNB for the first time. The timing resolution achieved will enable significant enhancement of cosmic background rejection for all neutrino analyses. Furthermore, the ns timing resolution opens new avenues to search for long-lived-particles such as heavy neutral leptons in MicroBooNE, as well as in future large LArTPC experiments, namely the SBN program and DUNE.

Abstract

Understanding rapid solidification behavior at velocities relevant to additive manufacturing (AM) is critical to controlling microstructure selection. Although in-situ visualization of solidification dynamics is now possible, systematic studies under AM conditions with microstructural outcomes compared to solidification theory remain lacking. Here we measure solid-liquid interface velocities of Ni-Mo-Al alloy single crystals under AM conditions with synchrotron X-ray imaging, characterize the microstructures, and show discrepancies with classical theories regarding the onset velocity for absolute stability of a planar solid-liquid interface. Experimental observations reveal cellular/dendritic microstructures can persist at velocities larger than the expected absolute stability limit, where banded structure formation should theoretically appear. We show that theory and experimental observations can be reconciled by properly accounting for the effect of solute trapping and kinetic undercooling on the velocity-dependent solidus and liquidus temperatures of the alloy. Further theoretical developments and accurate assessments of key thermophysical parameters - like liquid diffusivities, solid-liquid interface excess free energies, and kinetic coefficients - remain needed to quantitatively investigate such discrepancies and pave the way for the prediction and control of microstructure selection under rapid solidification conditions.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed $\Lambda$ baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the Main Injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to $2.2 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target of neutrino mode running and $4.9 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target of anti-neutrino mode running. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate $\Lambda$ production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of $5.3 \pm 1.1$ events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of $3.7 \pm 1.0$ events. Restricting the phase space to only include $\Lambda$ baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of $2.0^{+2.2}_{-1.7} \times 10^{-40}$ cm$^2/$Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined.
