Search

We construct explicit models that solve the axion quality problem originating from quantum gravitational effects. The general strategy we employ is to supplement the Standard Model and its grand unified extensions by an anomaly-free axial $U(1)_a$ symmetry that is gauged. We show that for several choices of the gauge quantum numbers of the fermions, this setup leads to an accidental $U(1)$ symmetry with a QCD anomaly which is identified as the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry that solves the strong CP problem. The $U(1)_a$ gauge symmetry controls the amount of explicit PQ symmetry violation induced by quantum gravity, resulting in a high quality axion. We present two classes of models employing this strategy. In the first class (models I and II), the axial $U(1)_a$ gauge symmetry acts on vector-like quarks leading to an accidental KSVZ-type axion. The second class (model III) is based on $SO(10)$ grand unified theory extended by a gauged $U(1)_a$ symmetry that leads to a hybrid KSVZ--DFSZ type axion. The couplings of the axion to the electron and the nucleon are found to be distinct in this class of hybrid models from those in the KSVZ and DFSZ models, which can be used to test these models. The Zee-Babu model is an economical framework for neutrino mass generation as two-loop quantum corrections. In this work, we present a UV completion of this model by embedding it into an $SU(5)$ unified framework. Interestingly, we find that loop-induced contributions to neutrino masses arising from colored scalars are just as important as those from color-neutral ones. These new states, which are required from gauge coupling unification and neutrino oscillation data to have masses below $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ TeV, may be accessible to future collider experiments. Additionally, the model can be probed in proton decay searches. Our Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of model parameters shows a high likelihood of observable $p \rightarrow e^+ \pi^0$ decay signal in the first decade of Hyper-Kamiokande operation. The model predicts a vector-like down-type quark at the TeV scale, utilized for realistic fermion mass generation and gauge coupling unification. The model is UV-complete in the sense that it is a unified theory which is realistic and asymptotically free that can be extrapolated to the Planck scale., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Left-right symmetric models which employ a generalized seesaw mechanism to generate quark and charged lepton masses are known to solve the strong CP problem via parity symmetry, without the need for the axion. These models lead to naturally light Dirac neutrinos with their masses arising through radiatve corrections. In this work, we show how baryogenesis via Dirac leptogenesis can be implemented in this framework. A pair of left-right symmetric scalar doublets $\phi_{L,R}$ carrying $(B-L)$ charge of $3$ is introduced for this purpose, which preserves the parity solution to the strong CP problem. Small neutrino masses are generated through one-loop diagrams mediated by these scalars. The decay of vector-like leptons ($E_i$) involved in the seesaw mechanism to generate charged lepton masses, $E_i \rightarrow \overline{\nu}_{jR} \,\phi_R^-$, creates a right-handed neutrino ($\nu_{R}$) asymmetry, while preserving total lepton number. The compensating lepton asymmetry is converted to baryon asymmetry via electroweak sphalerons. We show that for a large range of model parameters successful baryogenesis can be realized, with the $W_R^\pm$ gauge boson mass being as low as $10^6$ GeV., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables

Invisible axion models that solve the strong CP problem via the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism typically have a quality problem that arises from quantum gravity effects which violate all global symmetries. These models therefore require extreme fine-tuning of parameters for consistency. We present a new solution to the quality problem in a unified $SO(10)\times U(1)_a$ gauge model, where $U(1)_a$ is an anomaly free axial gauge symmetry. PQ symmetry emerges as an accidental symmetry in this setup, which admits a PQ breaking scale as large as $4\times 10^{11}$ GeV, allowing for the axion to be the cosmological dark matter. We call this a hybrid axion model due to its unique feature that it interpolates between the popular KSVZ and DFSZ axion models. Its predictions for the experimentally measurable axion couplings to the nucleon and electron are distinct from those of the usual models, a feature that can be used to test it. We propose a class of dark matter models based on a chiral $U(1)$ gauge symmetry acting on a dark sector. The chiral $U(1)$ protects the masses of the dark sector fermions, and also guarantees the stability of the dark matter particle by virtue of an unbroken discrete $\mathcal{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry. We identify 38 such $U(1)$ models which are descendants of a chiral $SU(3) \times SU(2)$ gauge symmetry, consisting of a minimal set of fermions with simple $U(1)$ charge assignments. We show how these models can also be utilized to generate small Majorana neutrino masses radiatively via the scotogenic mechanism with the dark sector particles circulating inside loop diagrams. We further explore the phenomenology of the simplest model in this class, which admits a Majorana fermion, Dirac fermion or a scalar field to be the dark matter candidate, and show the consistency of various scenarios with constraints from relic density and direct detection experiments., Comment: 18 pages + references, 9 figures

In prior studies, a very minimal Yukawa sector within the $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theory framework has been identified, comprising of Higgs fields belonging to a real $10_H$, a real $120_H$, and a $\overline{126}_H$ dimensional representations. In this work, within this minimal framework, we have obtained fits to fermion masses and mixings while successfully reproducing the cosmological baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis.The right-handed neutrino ($N_i$) mass spectrum obtained from the fit is strongly hierarchical, suggesting that $B-L$ asymmetry is dominantly produced from $N_2$ dynamics while $N_1$ is responsible for erasing the excess asymmetry. With this rather constrained Yukawa sector, fits are obtained both for normal and inverted ordered neutrino mass spectra, consistent with leptonic CP-violating phase $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ indicated by global fits of neutrino oscillation data, while also satisfying the current limits from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. In particular, the the leptonic CP-violating phase has a preference to be in the range $\delta_\mathrm{CP}\simeq (230-300)^\circ$. We propose a non-supersymmetric $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ GUT with the scalar sector consisting of $\mathbf{650}\oplus \mathbf{351'} \oplus \mathbf{27}$. Making use of the first representation for the initial symmetry breaking to an intermediate stage, and the latter two representations for second-stage breaking to the Standard Model and a realistic Yukawa sector, this theory represents the minimal $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ GUT that proceeds through one of the intermediate stages that are novel compared to $\mathrm{SU(5)}$ or $\mathrm{SO}(10)$ GUT: trinification $\mathrm{SU}(3)_C\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_L\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_R$, $\mathrm{SU}(6)\times \mathrm{SU}(2)$ and flipped $\mathrm{SO}(10)\times\mathrm{U}(1)$. We analyze these possibilities under the choice of vacuum that preserves a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ ``spinorial parity'', which disentangles the chiral and vector-like fermions of $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ and provides a dark matter candidate in the form of a (scalar) inert doublet. Three cases are shown to consistently unify under the extended survival hypothesis (with minimal fine-tuning): trinification symmetry $\mathrm{SU}(3)_C\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_L\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_R$ with either $LR$ or $CR$ parity, and $\mathrm{SU}(6)_{CR}\times\mathrm{SU}(2)_L$. Although the successful cases give a large range for proton lifetime estimates, all of them include regions consistent with current experimental bounds and within reach of forthcoming experiments. Theories in which the dark matter (DM) candidate is a fermion transforming chirally under a gauge symmetry are attractive, as the gauge symmetry would protect the DM mass. In such theories, the universe would have undergone a phase transition at early times that generated the DM mass upon spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry. In this paper, we explore the gravitational wave signals of a simple such theory based on an $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{D}$ dark sector with a dark isospin-$3/2$ fermion serving as the DM candidate. This is arguably the simplest chiral theory possible. The scalar sector consists of a dark isospin-$3$ multiplet which breaks the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{D}$ gauge symmetry and also generates the DM mass. We construct the full thermal potential of the model and identify regions of parameter space which lead to detectable gravitational wave signals, arising from a strong first-order $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{D}$ phase transition, in various planned space-based interferometers, while also being consistent with dark matter relic abundance. Bulk of the parameter space exhibiting detectable gravitational wave signals in the model also has large WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections, $\sigma_{\rm SI}$, which could be probed in upcoming direct detection experiments., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures and 1 table, Matches the published version

The Yukawa and scalar sectors of a general $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs doublet model (3HDM) are investigated. The Yukawa interactions are constructed in an $S_3$-invariant way, while the scalar potential contains $S_3$ soft-breaking terms. Global fits to the quark/lepton masses and CKM/PMNS matrices are performed. Excellent fits to all fermion mass and mixing parameters are obtained. Both normal ordering and inverted ordering of neutrino masses are found to be admissible within the framework, with a prediction for the CP-violation phase, $\delta_{CP} \simeq 120^0$. The fit results in the Yukawa sector are further investigated, together with the scalar sector, imposing constraints from Higgs-mediated neutral meson mixing and neutron electric dipole moment (EDM). We explore the lowest allowed mass of the heavy Higgs bosons, consistent with these constraints, and find it to be about 17 TeV. The corresponding neutron EDM is around $1.7\times10^{-27}$ e-cm, which is within reach of proposed experiments. It is found that the constraints from the $K$-meson system dominate, while those from the $D$ meson system are marginal.

We develop a grand unified theory of matter and forces based on the gauge symmetry $SU(5)_L\times SU(5)_R$ with parity interchanging the two factor groups. Our main motivation for such a construction is to realize a minimal GUT embedding of left-right symmetric models that provide a parity solution to the strong CP problem without the axion. We show how the gauge couplings unify with an intermediate gauge symmetry $SU(3)_{cL}\times SU(2)_{2L}\times U(1)_{L}\times SU(5)_R$, and establish its consistency with proton decay constraints. The model correctly reproduces the observed fermion masses and mixings and leads to naturally light Dirac neutrinos with their Yukawa couplings suppressed by a factor $M_I/M_G$, the ratio of the intermediate scale to the GUT scale. We call this mechanism type II-Dirac seesaw. Furthermore, the model predicts $\delta_{CP} = \pm (130.4 \pm 1.2)^\circ $ and $m_{\nu_1} = (4.8-8.4)$ meV for the Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass. It has been known for some time that asymptotic parity invariance of weak interactions can provide a solution to the strong CP problem without the need for the axion. Left-right symmetric theories which employ a minimal Higgs sector consisting of a left-handed and a right-handed doublet is an example of such a theory wherein all fermion masses arise through a generalized seesaw mechanism. In this paper we present a way to understand the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry as well as the dark matter content of the universe in these theories using the Affleck-Dine (AD) leptogenesis mechanism and inflaton decay, respectively. Three gauge singlet fermions are needed for this purpose, two of which help to implement the Dirac seesaw for neutrino masses while the third one becomes the non-thermal warm dark matter candidate. A soft lepton number breaking term involving the AD scalar field is used to generate lepton asymmetry which suffers no wash-out effects and maintains the Dirac nature of neutrinos. In the context of $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), an intriguing possibility for symmetry breaking to the Standard Model (SM) group involves an intermediate stage characterized by either $\mathrm{SU}(3)\times\mathrm{SU}(3)\times\mathrm{SU}(3)$ (trinification) or $\mathrm{SU}(6)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)$. The more common choices of $\mathrm{SU(5)}$ and $\mathrm{SO}(10)$ GUT symmetry groups do not offer such breaking chains. We argue that the presence of a real (rank $2$ tensor) representation $\mathbf{650}$ of $\mathrm{E}_{6}$ in the scalar sector is the minimal and likely only reasonable possibility to obtain one of the novel intermediate stages. We analyze the renormalizable scalar potential of a single copy of the $\mathbf{650}$ and find vacuum solutions that support regularly embedded subgroups $\mathrm{SU}(3)\times\mathrm{SU}(3)\times\mathrm{SU}(3)$, $\mathrm{SU}(6)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)$, and $\mathrm{SO}(10)\times\mathrm{U}(1)$, as well as specially embedded subgroups $\mathrm{F}_{4}$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)\times\mathrm{G}_{2}$ that do not contain the SM gauge symmetry. We show that for a suitable choice of parameters, each of the regular cases can be obtained as the lowest among the analyzed minima in the potential., Comment: 29 pages, 15 tables, 3 figures

We investigate the phenomenology of a non-thermal dark matter (DM) candidate in the context of flavor models that explain the hierarchy in the masses and mixings of quarks and leptons via the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism. A flavor-dependent $U(1)_{\rm FN}$ symmetry explains the fermion mass and mixing hierarchy, and also provides a mechanism for suppressed interactions of the DM, assumed to be a Majorana fermion, with the Standard Model (SM) particles, resulting in its FIMP (feebly interacting massive particle) character. Such feeble interactions are mediated by a flavon field through higher dimensional operators governed by the $U(1)_{\rm FN}$ charges. We point out a natural stabilizing mechanism for the DM within this framework with the choice of half-integer $U(1)_{\rm FN}$ charge $n$ for the DM fermion, along with integer charges for the SM fermions and the flavon field. In this flavon portal scenario, the DM is non-thermally produced from the decay of the flavon in the early universe which becomes a relic through the freeze-in mechanism. We explore the allowed parameter space for this DM candidate from relic abundance by solving the relevant Boltzmann equations. We find that reproducing the correct relic density requires the DM mass to be in the range $(100-300)$ keV for $n=7.5$ and $(3-10)$ MeV for $n=8.5$ where $n$ is the $U(1)_{\rm FN}$ charge of the DM fermion., Comment: Accepted for publication in JHEP ; Added a discussion on free streaming length in Section-5

We explore the possibility of resolving simultaneously the $W$-boson mass shift reported by the CDF collaboration and the apparent deviation from unitarity in the first row of the CKM mixing matrix in a class of left-right symmetric models. The fermion masses are generated in these models through a universal seesaw mechanism, utilizing vector-like partners of the usual fermions. We find a unique solution to the two anomalies where the mixing of the down quark with a vector-like quark (VLQ) resolves the CKM unitarity puzzle, and the mixing of the top quark with a VLQ partner explains the $W$ boson mass shift. The validity of this setup is tested against the stability of the Higgs potential up to higher energies. We find upper bounds of $(5,\,4,\,4)$ TeV on the masses of the down-type VLQ, the top-partner VLQ, and a neutral scalar associated with $SU(2)_R$ gauge symmetry breaking, respectively. Observation of lepton number ($L$) violation by two units at colliders would provide evidence for the Majorana nature of neutrinos. We study signals of $L$-violation in the context of two popular models of neutrino masses, the type-II seesaw model and the Zee model, wherein small neutrino masses arise at the tree-level and one-loop level, respectively. We focus on $L$-violation signals at the LHC arising through the process $pp \to \ell^{\pm}\ell^{\prime \pm}$ + jets within these frameworks. We obtain sensitivity to $L$-violation in the type-II seesaw model for triplet scalar masses up to 700 GeV and in the Zee model for charged scalar masses up to 4.8 TeV at the high-luminosity LHC with an integrated luminosity of $3~\text{ab}^{-1}$., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, and 1 table

The recent observation of NGC 1068 by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory has opened a new window to neutrino physics with astrophysical baselines. In this Letter, we propose a new method to probe the nature of neutrino masses using these observations. In particular, our method enables searching for signatures of pseudo-Dirac neutrinos with mass-squared differences that reach down to $\delta m^2 \gtrsim 10^{-21}~\text{eV}^2$, improving the reach of terrestrial experiments by more than a billion. Several neutrino experiments have reported results that are potentially inconsistent with our current understanding of the lepton sector. A candidate solution to these so-called short-baseline anomalies is postulating the existence of new, eV-scale, mostly sterile neutrinos that mix with the active neutrinos. This hypothesis, however, is strongly disfavored once one considers all neutrino data, especially those that constrain the disappearance of muon and electron neutrinos at short-baselines. Here, we show that if the sterile-active mixing parameters depend on the energy-scales that characterize neutrino production and detection, the sterile-neutrino hypothesis may provide a reasonable fit to all neutrino data. The reason for the improved fit is that the stringent disappearance constraints on the different elements of the extended neutrino mixing matrix are associated to production and detection energy scales that are different from those that characterize the anomalous LSND and MiniBooNE appearance data. We show, via a concrete example, that secret interactions among the sterile neutrinos can lead to the results of interest., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

In this report we discuss the main theories to understand the origin of baryon and lepton number violation in physics beyond the Standard Model. We present the theoretical predictions for rare processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, proton decay, and neutron-antineutron oscillation, and overview the prospects to discover these rare processes in the near future. The possibility to observe baryon and lepton violating signatures at current and future colliders and through precision studies of other rare processes, and the testability of different baryogenesis mechanisms is discussed in detail. A healthy and broad experimental program looking for proton decay, neutrinoless double beta decay and neutron-antineutron oscillations is essential to make new discoveries in this field. These searches are carried out at various experimental facilities in the US and abroad, and use instrumentation arching across traditional HEP/NP boundaries. In addition, experiments such as those at the Large Hadron Collider could discover exotic baryon and/or lepton number violating signatures connected to low energy scale theories for neutrino masses, supersymmetric models with R-parity violation, new gauge theories or other mechanisms for physics beyond the Standard Model. We develop a class of left-right symmetric theories based on the gauge group $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)$ with a generalized seesaw mechanism for generating the charged fermion masses. Neutrinos are naturally Dirac particles in this setup with their small masses arising from two-loop quantum corrections. We evaluate these two-loop diagrams exactly and analyze the flavor structure of the lepton sector. We find excellent fits to neutrino oscillation data, independent of the right-handed gauge symmetry breaking scale. We also explore the possibility that neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac particles in this framework, with the tiny mass splittings between active and sterile neutrinos arising from Planck-induced corrections and find possible realizations. These models can be tested in the near future with precision cosmological measurements of $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$ in CMB which is predicted to be $\simeq 0.14$. We show an interesting correlation between the recent high precision measurement of the $W$-boson mass by the CDF collaboration and the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly in the context of the two Higgs doublet model. One-loop diagrams involving the exchange of neutral scalar bosons can explain the muon $(g-2)$, which however requires significant mass splittings among members of the second Higgs doublet. These splittings also generate a positive shift in the mass of the $W$-boson, consistent with the recent CDF measurement. The charged and neutral scalars of the model cannot be heavier than about 600 GeV for a simultaneous explanation of the two anomalies. The entire parameter space of the model can be tested at the LHC by a combination of same sign dimuon signals in $pp \rightarrow (\mu^+ \mu^+ jj + {E\!\!\!\!/}_{T})$ and $pp \rightarrow (\mu^+\mu^-\tau^+\tau^-+X)$ signals., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, expanded discussion of collider tests

Baryon number conservation is not guaranteed by any fundamental symmetry within the Standard Model, and therefore has been a subject of experimental and theoretical scrutiny for decades. So far, no evidence for baryon number violation has been observed. Large underground detectors have long been used for both neutrino detection and searches for baryon number violating processes. The next generation of large neutrino detectors will seek to improve upon the limits set by past and current experiments and will cover a range of lifetimes predicted by several Grand Unified Theories. We study the detection prospects of relatively light charged scalars in radiative Majorana neutrino mass models, such as the Zee model and its variants using scalar leptoquarks, at current and future neutrino telescopes. In particular, we show that these scalar mediators can give rise to Glashow-like resonance features in the ultra-high energy neutrino (UHE) event spectrum at the IceCube neutrino observatory and its high-energy upgrade IceCube-Gen2. The same scalars can also give rise to observable non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI), and we show that the UHE neutrinos provide a complementary probe of NSI. We show how trinification models based on the gauge group $SU(3)_C \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ realized near the TeV scale can provide naturally a variety of dark matter (DM) candidates. These models contain a discrete $T$ parity which may remain unbroken even after spontaneous symmetry breaking. The lightest $T$-odd particle, which could be a fermion, a scalar, or a gauge boson, can constitute the dark matter of the universe. This framework naturally admits a doublet-singlet fermionic DM, a singlet scalar DM, or a vector boson DM. Here we develop the vector boson DM scenario wherein the DM couples off-diagonally with the usual fermions and vector-like fermions present in the theory. We show consistency of this framework with dark matter relic abundance and direct detection limits as well as LHC constraints. We derive upper limits of 900 GeV on the vector gauge boson DM mass and 4.5 TeV on the vector-like quarks and lepton masses. Mirror models lead to the possibility that neutron ($n$) can oscillate into its mirror partner ($n'$) inspiring several experimental searches for this phenomenon. The condition for observability of this oscillation is a high degree of degeneracy between the $n$ and $n'$ masses, which can be guaranteed if there is exact parity symmetry taking all particles to their mirror partners. However consistency of these models with big bang nucleosynthesis requires that this parity symmetry be broken in the early universe in a scenario called asymmetric inflation. In this paper we study the consistency of an observable $n-n'$ oscillations signal with asymmetric inflation and derive various theoretical constraints. In particular, we find that the reheat temperature after inflation should lie below 2.5 TeV, and predict a singlet fermion with a mass below 100 GeV. In simple models where the right-handed neutrino is a mediator of baryon number violating interactions we find that the light neutrinos are Dirac fermions with their masses arising radiatively through one-loop diagrams., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

Neutrino mixing parameters are subject to quantum corrections and hence are scale dependent. This means that the mixing parameters associated to the production and detection of neutrinos need not coincide since these processes are characterized by different energy scales. We show that, in the presence of relatively light new physics, the scale dependence of the mixing parameters can lead to observable consequences in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, such as T2K and NOvA, and in neutrino telescopes like IceCube. We discuss some of the experimental signatures of this scenario, including zero-baseline flavor transitions, new sources of CP-invariance violation, and apparent inconsistencies among measurements of mixing angles at different experiments or oscillation channels. We show that a unified framework based on an $SU(2)_H$ horizontal symmetry which generates a naturally large neutrino transition magnetic moment and explains the XENON1T electron recoil excess also predicts a positive shift in the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This shift is of the right magnitude to be consistent with the Brookhaven measurement as well as the recent Fermilab measurement of the muon $g-2$. A relatively light neutral scalar from a Higgs doublet with mass near 100 GeV contributes to muon $g-2$, while its charged partner induces the neutrino magnetic moment. In contrast to other multi-scalar theories, in the model presented here there is no freedom to control the sign and strength of the muon $g-2$ contribution. We examine proton decay mediated by color-triplet Higgsinos in minimal supersymmetric $SU(5)$ grand unified theory in light of the discovery of the Higgs boson and the absence of SUSY signals at the LHC. We pay special attention to various threshold effects arising from Planck-suppressed operators that affect the color-triplet Higgsino mass and also correct the wrong mass relations for the light fermions. Our analysis allows for a non-universal SUSY spectrum with the third family scalars having a separate mass compared to the first two families. We identify the allowed parameter space of the model and show that the SUSY scalar masses are constrained by current limits from proton lifetime to be above 5 TeV, while the glunio, Wino and the Higgsinos may be within reach of the LHC. When the SUSY scalar masses are required to be $\leq 20$ TeV, so that they are within reach of next generation collider experiments, we find that proton lifetime for the decay $p \rightarrow \overline{\nu} K^+$ is bounded by $\tau(p \rightarrow \overline{\nu} K^+) \leq 1.1 \times 10^{35}$ yrs.

We develop a minimal left-right symmetric model based on the gauge group $SU(3)_C \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R \otimes U(1)_{B-L}$ wherein the Higgs triplets conventionally employed for symmetry breaking are replaced by Higgs doublets. Majorana masses for the right-handed neutrinos $(\nu_R$) are induced via two-loop diagrams involving a charged scalar field $\eta^+$. This setup is shown to provide excellent fits to neutrino oscillation data via the seesaw mechanism for the entire range of the $W_R^\pm$ mass, from TeV to the GUT scale. When the $W_R^\pm$ mass is at the TeV scale, the $\nu_R$ masses turn out to be in the MeV range. We analyze constraints from low energy experiments, early universe cosmology and from supernova 1987a on such a scenario and show its consistency. We also study collider implications of a relatively light $\eta^+$ scalar through its decay into multi-lepton final states and derive a lower limit of 390 GeV on its mass from the LHC, which can be improved to 555 GeV in its high luminosity run., Comment: 44 pages and references, 10 figures

We present a model of radiative neutrino masses which also resolves anomalies reported in $B$-meson decays, $R_{D^{(\star)}}$ and $R_{K^{(\star)}}$, as well as in muon $g-2$ measurement, $\Delta a_\mu$. Neutrino masses arise in the model through loop diagrams involving TeV-scale leptoquark (LQ) scalars $R_2$ and $S_3$. Fits to neutrino oscillation parameters are obtained satisfying all flavor constraints which also explain the anomalies in $R_{D^{(\star)}}$, $R_{K^{(\star)}}$ and $\Delta a_\mu$ within $1\, \sigma$. An isospin-3/2 Higgs quadruplet plays a crucial role in generating neutrino masses; we point out that the doubly-charged scalar contained therein can be produced in the decays of the $S_3$ LQ, which enhances its reach to 1.1 (6.2) TeV at $\sqrt s=14$ TeV high-luminosity LHC ($\sqrt s=100$ TeV FCC-hh). We also present flavor-dependent upper limits on the Yukawa couplings of the LQs to the first two family fermions, arising from non-resonant dilepton ($pp \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^-$) processes mediated by $t$-channel LQ exchange, which for 1 TeV LQ mass, are found to be in the range $(0.15 - 0.36)$. These limits preclude any explanation of $R_{D^{(\star)}}$ through LQ-mediated $B$-meson decays involving $\nu_e$ or $\nu_\mu$ in the final state. We also find that the same Yukawa couplings responsible for the chirally-enhanced contribution to $\Delta a_\mu$ give rise to new contributions to the SM Higgs decays to muon and tau pairs, with the modifications to the corresponding branching ratios being at (2-6)% level, which could be tested at future hadron colliders, such as HL-LHC and FCC-hh., Comment: 43 pages + references, expanded $h \to \mu \mu$ discussion, added references, matches published version

The clockwork mechanism, which can naturally explain the origin of small numbers, is implemented in $SO(10)$ grand unified theories to address the origin of hierarchies in fermion masses and mixings. We show that a minimal Yukawa sector involving a $10_H$ and $\overline{126}_H$ of Higgs bosons, extended with two clockwork chains consisting of $16+\overline{16}$ vector-like fermions, can explain the hierarchical patterns with all the Yukawa couplings being of order one. Emergence of a realistic mass spectrum does not require any symmetry that distinguishes the three generations. We develop clockwork-extended $SO(10)$ GUTs both in the context of SUSY and non-SUSY frameworks. The excess in electron recoil events reported recently by the XENON1T experiment may be interpreted as evidence for a sizable transition magnetic moment $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ of Majorana neutrinos. We show the consistency of this scenario when a single component transition magnetic moment takes values $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu} \in(1.65 - 3.42) \times 10^{-11} \mu_B$. Such a large value typically leads to unacceptably large neutrino masses. In this paper we show that new leptonic symmetries can solve this problem and demonstrate this with several examples. We first revive and then propose a simplified model based on $SU(2)_H$ horizontal symmetry. Owing to the difference in their Lorentz structures, in the $SU(2)_H$ symmetric limit, $m_\nu$ vanishes while $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ is nonzero. Our simplified model is based on an approximate $SU(2)_H$, which we also generalize to a three family $SU(3)_H$-symmetry. Collider and low energy tests of these models are analyzed. We have also analyzed implications of the XENON1T data for the Zee model and its extensions which naturally generate a large $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ with suppressed $m_\nu$ via a spin symmetry mechanism, but found that the induced $\mu_{\nu_e\nu_\mu}$ is not large enough to explain recent data. Finally, we suggest a mechanism to evade stringent astrophysical limits on neutrino magnetic moments arising from stellar evolution by inducing a medium-dependent mass for the neutrino., Comment: 40 pages + references, 19 figures, matches published version

We explore the complementarity between LHC searches and neutrino experiments in probing neutrino non-standard interactions. Our study spans the theoretical frameworks of effective field theory, simplified model and an illustrative UV completion, highlighting the synergies and distinctive features in all cases. We show that besides constraining the allowed NSI parameter space, the LHC data can break important degeneracies present in oscillation experiments such as DUNE, while the latter play an important role in probing light and weakly coupled physics undetectable at the LHC., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, small improvement and added supplemental material

Non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter mediated by a scalar field would induce medium-dependent neutrino masses which can modify oscillation probabilities. Generating observable effects requires an ultra-light scalar mediator. We derive general expressions for the scalar NSI using techniques of quantum field theory at finite density and temperature, including the long-range force effects, and discuss various limiting cases applicable to the neutrino propagation in different media, such as the Earth, Sun, supernovae and early Universe. We also analyze various terrestrial and space-based experimental constraints, as well as astrophysical and cosmological constraints on these NSI parameters, applicable to either Dirac or Majorana neutrinos. By combining all these constraints, we show that observable scalar NSI effects, although precluded in terrestrial experiments, are still possible in future solar and supernovae neutrino data, and in cosmological observations such as cosmic microwave background and big bang nucleosynthesis data., Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures, 2 Tables, minor changes; version published in PRD

We propose a theory of chiral fermion dark matter (DM) with an isospin-3/2 fermion of a dark sector $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry, which is arguably the simplest chiral theory. An isospin-3 scalar breaks $SU(2)_D$ down to a discrete non-Abelian group $T'$ and generates the DM mass. The $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry protects the DM mass and guarantees its stability. We derive consistency conditions for the theory and study its DM phenomenology. In some regions of parameters of the theory a two-component DM scenario is realized, consisting of a fermion and a boson, with the boson being the lightest $T'$ nonsinglet field. In the case of single component fermionic DM, we find that internal consistency of the theory, perturbativity arguments, and the observed relic abundance limit the DM mass to be less than $280$ GeV, except when $s$-channel resonance regions are open for annihilation. We propose a new way to probe non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino data at current and future neutrino telescopes. We consider the Zee model of radiative neutrino mass generation as a prototype, which allows two charged scalars -- one $SU(2)_L$-doublet and one singlet, both being leptophilic, to be as light as 100 GeV, thereby inducing potentially observable NSI with electrons. We show that these light charged Zee-scalars could give rise to a Glashow-like resonance feature in the UHE neutrino event spectrum at the IceCube neutrino observatory and its high-energy upgrade IceCube-Gen2, which can probe a sizable fraction of the allowed NSI parameter space., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; minor changes and added references, version to appear in Phys. Models of radiative Majorana neutrino masses require new scalars and/or fermions to induce lepton number violating interactions. We show that these new particles also generate observable neutrino nonstandard interactions (NSI) with matter. We classify radiative models as type-I or II, with type-I models containing at least one Standard Model (SM) particle inside the loop diagram generating neutrino mass, and type-II models having no SM particle inside the loop. While type-II radiative models do not generate tree-level NSI, popular models which fall under the type-I category are shown, somewhat surprisingly, to generate observable NSI at tree-level, while being consistent with direct and indirect constraints from colliders, electroweak precision data and charged-lepton flavor violation (cLFV). We survey such models where neutrino masses arise at one, two and three loops. In the prototypical Zee model which generates neutrino masses via one-loop diagrams involving charged scalars, we find that diagonal NSI can be as large as ($8\%, 3.8\%, 9.3\%$) for ($\varepsilon_{ee},\varepsilon_{\mu \mu}, \varepsilon_{\tau \tau}$), while off-diagonal NSI can be at most ($10^{-3}\%, 0.56\%, 0.34\%$) for ($\varepsilon_{e\mu},\varepsilon_{e \tau}, \varepsilon_{\mu \tau}$). In one-loop neutrino mass models using leptoquarks (LQs), $(\varepsilon_{\mu\mu},\, \varepsilon_{\tau\tau})$ can be as large as $(21.6\%,\,51.7\%)$, while $\varepsilon_{ee}$ and $(\varepsilon_{e\mu},\, \varepsilon_{e\tau},\,\varepsilon_{\mu\tau})$ can at most be 0.6\%. The most stringent constraints on the diagonal NSI are found to come from neutrino oscillation and scattering experiments, while the off-diagonal NSI are mostly constrained by low-energy processes, such as atomic parity violation and cLFV. This report summarizes the present status of neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI). After a brief overview, several aspects of NSIs are discussed, including connection to neutrino mass models, model-building and phenomenology of large NSI with both light and heavy mediators, NSI phenomenology in both short- and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, neutrino cross-sections, complementarity of NSI with other low- and high-energy experiments, fits with neutrino oscillation and scattering data, DUNE sensitivity to NSI, effective field theory of NSI, as well as the relevance of NSI to dark matter and cosmology. We also discuss the open questions and interesting future directions that can be pursued by the community at large. We show that the rate for di-Higgs production at the LHC can be enhanced by a factor as large as 25 compared to the Standard Model value in the two Higgs doublet model while being consistent with the known properties of the observed Higgs boson $h$. There are correlated modifications in $t\overline{t}h$ and resonant $Zh$ production rates, which can serve as tests of this model. Our framework treats both Higgs doublets on equal footing, each with comparable Yukawa couplings to fermions. The Cheng-Sher ansatz for multi-Higgs doublet model is shown to be strongly disfavored by current experiments. We propose a new ansatz for the Yukawa couplings of the Higgs doublets $\Phi_a$ is proposed, where $Y_{ij}^{(a)} = C_{ij}^{(a)}\cdot {\rm min}\{m_i, \, m_j\}/v$, with $C_{ij}^{(a)}$ being order one coefficients, $m_i$ the mass of fermion $i$ and $v$ the electroweak vacuum expectation value. Such a pattern of couplings can explain the observed features of fermion masses and mixings and satisfies all flavor violation constraints arising from the exchange of neutral Higgs bosons. The rate for $\mu \rightarrow e \gamma$ decay and new contributions to CP violation in $B_s-\overline{B}_s$ mixing are predicted to be close to the experimental limits., Comment: 47 pages, 15 figures, published version in JHEP

We suggest simple ways of implementing Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry to solve the strong CP problem in renormalizable SUSY $SO(10)$ models with a minimal Yukawa sector. Realistic fermion mass generation requires that a second pair of Higgs doublets survive down to the PQ scale. We show how unification of gauge couplings can be achieved in this context. Higgsino mediated proton decay rate is strongly suppressed by a factor of $(M_{\rm PQ}/M_{\rm GUT})^2$, which enables all SUSY particles to have masses of order TeV. With TeV scale SUSY spectrum, $p \rightarrow \overline{\nu} K^+$ decay rate is expected to be in the observable range. Lepton flavor violating processes $\mu \rightarrow e\gamma$ decay and $\mu-e$ conversion in nuclei, induced by the Dirac neutrino Yukawa couplings, are found to be within reach of forthcoming experiments., Comment: 38 pages, 4 figures, replacement to match with the published version

We present an ultraviolet complete theory for the $R(D^*)$ and $R(D)$ anomaly in terms of a low mass $W_R^\pm$ gauge boson of a class of left-right symmetric models. These models, which are based on the gauge symmetry $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$, utilize vector-like fermions to generate quark and lepton masses via a universal seesaw mechanism. A parity symmetric version as well as an asymmetric version are studied. A light sterile neutrino emerges naturally in this setup, which allows for new decay modes of $B$-meson via right-handed currents. We show that these models can explain $R(D^*)$ and $R(D)$ anomaly while being consistent with LHC and LEP data as well as low energy flavor constraints arising from $K_L-K_S, B_{d,s}-\bar{B}_{d,s}$, $D-\bar{D}$ mixing, etc., but only for a limited range of the $W_R$ mass: $1.2\, (1.8)~{\rm TeV} \leq M_{W_R}\leq 3~ {\rm TeV}$ for parity asymmetric (symmetric) Yukawa sectors. The light sterile neutrinos predicted by the model may be relevant for explaining the MiniBoone and LSND neutrino oscillation results. The parity symmetric version of the model provides a simple solution to the strong CP problem without relying on the axion. Supersymmetric $SO(10)$ models with Yukawa coupling matrices involving only a $10_H$ and a $\overline{126}_H$ of Higgs fields can lead to a predictive and consistent scenario for fermion masses and mixings, including the neutrino sector. However, when coupled minimally to a symmetry breaking sector that includes a $210_H$ and a $126_H$, these models lead either to an unacceptably small neutrino mass scale, or to non-perturbative values of the gauge couplings. Here we show that with the addition of a $54_H$ to the symmetry breaking sector, the successful predictions of these models for fermion masses and mixings can be maintained. The $54_H$ enables a reduction of the $B-L$ symmetry breaking scale to an intermediate value of order $10^{12}$ GeV, consistent with the observed neutrino mass spectrum, while preserving perturbative gauge coupling unification. We obtain an excellent fit to all fermion masses and mixings in this framework. We analyze carefully the prediction of the model for CP violation in neutrino oscillations. Consistency with proton lifetime, however, requires a mini-split SUSY spectrum with the squarks and sleptons having masses of order 100 TeV, accompanied by TeV scale gauginos and Higgsinos. Such a spectrum may arise from pure gravity mediation, which would predict the partial lifetime for the decay $p \rightarrow \overline{\nu} K^+$ to be an order of magnitude above the current experimental limit., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures, replacement to match the published version

The mass and weak interaction eigenstates for the quarks of the third generation are very well aligned, an empirical fact for which the Standard Model offers no explanation. We explore the possibility that this alignment is due to an additional gauge symmetry in the third generation. Specifically, we construct and analyze an explicit, renormalizable model with a gauge boson, $X$, corresponding to the $B-L$ symmetry of the third family. Having a relatively light (in the MeV to multi-GeV range), flavor-nonuniversal gauge boson results in a variety of constraints from different sources. By systematically analyzing 20 different constraints, we identify the most sensitive probes: kaon, $B^+$, $D^+$ and Upsilon decays, $D-\bar{D}^0$ mixing, atomic parity violation, and neutrino scattering and oscillations. For the new gauge coupling $g_X$ in the range $(10^{-2} - 10^{-4})$ the model is shown to be consistent with the data. Possible ways of testing the model in $b$ physics, top and $Z$ decays, direct collider production and neutrino oscillation experiments, where one can observe nonstandard matter effects, are outlined. The choice of leptons to carry the new force is ambiguous, resulting in additional phenomenological implications, such as non-universality in semileptonic bottom decays.
