Abstract

This paper discusses challenges of capacity building in sustainable urban energy planning and development in Western Balkan Countries (WBC). It identifies needs in training of municipal staff and addresses obstacles for transferring sustainable energy education from EU universities to universities of WBC. The analysis of the ten training courses developed and piloted in collaboration with academic and non-academic stakeholders in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia shows that while international cooperation has a good potential to improve quality of capacity building and to catalyse university-society collaboration in WBC, significant efforts on national and local (university) levels are needed to fully capitalise on these opportunities. In particular, it is necessary to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to education in sustainable energy, incorporating economic, social and institutional aspects of energy production and consumption together with the technical ones. On the national level, the lifelong learning system should get political and financial support in WBC to ensure efficiency and continuity of the training activities.

Abstract

In this paper, methane emissions from domestic wastewater were estimated using 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines. Wastewater can produce methane if it is handled anaerobically. According to the 2006 IPCC Wastewater model, methane emission is a function of the amount of generated organic waste and an emission factor that characterizes the extent to which this waste generates methane. The amount of degradable organic fraction in wastewater represents the main factor in determining the quantity of methane production. In this study, the population was divided into two areas, urban and rural. A survey was conducted in order to determine the number and type of wastewater treatment plants. At the current state, 38 wastewater treatment plants are in operation. Country-specific methane emissions from closed sewers, stagnant open sewers, septic tanks, and latrines combined are estimated to be about 22,000 tons per year. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

As energy costs continue to rise, industrial plants (even those of energy nonintensive industries such as furniture industry) need effective way to reduce the amount of energy they consume. Besides, there are a number of economic and environmental reasons why a company should consider environmental management initiatives. This paper provides a detailed guideline for implementing joint energy and environmental management system in wood furniture industrial company. It covers in detail all essential aspects of the system: initial system assessment, organization, policy development, energy and environmental auditing, action plan development, system promotion, checking system performance, and management review.
